2016 Garage Sale Thread

Well me and Makattak81 went to a lady's house on craigslist i found. The ad said wife selling husbands tools so it looked like there were huge deals to be had but when i got there i found out she was the toughest negotiator i have ever dealt with buying tools. I ended up getting a couple tools and a couple electric motors for $30 can you guys tell me if she got one over on me or did i do good. I bought them because they looked cool. One is a Franklin electric motor this isn't working and the other is a general electric that is working. Also got a crescent wrench, Williams wrench, proto flex socket, moon wrench. She wanted a extra $10 for two hex key folders that you can get for $1 each at estate sales. I spent forever looking through the stuff to find this stuff then when i leave she says oh i have all these tool boxes full of tools in the other garage but i am too tired tonight and it was only 5pm lol. But she was at least 80 years. But Mak said there wasn't much in the boxes and i am betting she wants a arm and a leg for the tools in them so i probably won't be back.

She probably thinks she is going to become rich selling off all her husbands stuff. Its not uncommon for estate sales to be so overpriced that almost nothing sells.
If you're lucky, she will have several sales and will start to realize she is overpricing and come down to a more reasonable price level.

I'm sure she is scared of getting ripped off. There's a lot of stuff of varying quality, and she was handling it by herself.

A lot of it is misc hardware what she probably won't be able to give away. She needs someone to come and help her price and sell stuff. She won't sell at those prices and i am sure she was all talk when she said how much she was getting. I bet a lot of people left pissed off at the high over retail prices. She doesn't use the internet either so she can't look up prices. I looked up a couple of the big stuff like the air compressors and what the exact same thing sold for and she thought i was joking and said no way i would sell it for that. She thinks she is sitting on a pot of gold but really 95% of itsn't worth much of anything.

The third item is an odd duck, as it looks like a gas light, but haven't seen one like it before.

I think you are probably right. Needs a mantle and a gas source, and I bet it would work. Any mounting holes in the escutcheon flange?

I picked up a Stanley 78 like yours a couple of weeks ago. It has a blade and lever cap in both blade positions - first one like that I've ever seen.

I had to look that up, Louisiana, Missouri is a small town in NE Missouri.

The ******** was a good luck symbol long before the Nazi's turned it into a symbol of hate.

Antique store score part of a hand pushed plow, I have the rest but was missing the tines, $8

My neighbor told me about a widow nearby wanting to get rid of tools.
Durham drawer holder with two hardware drawers partly full and a full can of Kroil
4 old casters, I should be able to make two good ones.
Craftsman Crown label tap and drill holders
Fractional Nitro USA and Letter USA drills in Huot cases, cornhusker and a 5" Craftsman made in Japan art deco vise
Total was $95 and I am going back to help her sort out all the Snap On and Matco tools

The picking gods were on my side today.

Found an old tobacco cutter and drip oiler and got them for a couple bucks. Maybe I got lucky there because they weren't priced.

Both had not seen the light of day for a while. I really get to digging sometimes, and anyone just looking would not have seen either.

The oiler was buried behind some wood and junk along the wall, and the tobacco cutter was hidden on a bottom shelf behind a whole bunch of ****.

Thought you guys might appreciate the oiler. Still mounted to half of a split bearing housing. Quite the bronze in there. Nice display piece if nothing else. I think it will look pretty when clean.

Those casters are neat. They would cool bolted a a vintage Craftsman something.

However, I'm wondering if it would have been hung from the ceiling and it connected via the supply gas pipe connection on the top portion of lamp.

Metal is very light duty and more green in color and white underneath shade, but does have some odd looking items that appear to be latches on side.

Picked it up because hadn't saw one like it before, but haven't come across a mfg name yet.

I wonder if owner of yours transferred a blade and lever cap from something else, so that he could avoid need to move it from one position to other on the Stanley 78?

Like you said, I haven't run into any which had both and so unusual.

Mike google Humphrey inverted gas lamp . I owned one years ago that looked similiar to yours but had a glass globe attached underneath.It came out of an old
Store in phila. On frankford ave.It hung from the ceiling hence the long chain.

I saw the one in Chelmsford, it was tough making the decision but I have two sales in the other direction that I'm going to try to get to. It will be a rough weekend for me. It's an off pay week, so funds are tight. So many good listings, so little money. If the listings are as good as they seem, the temptations will be brutal.

Tomorrow is the World's Largest Yard Sale here at the county fairgrounds. Pretty big thing. I'm not in the mood right now but I feel if I don't go I'll regret it.

Hit some yard sales today in what was beautiful weather and got the following:

1. USA Made Craftsman Vise Model 51871 with 5-1/2 jaws. Friend who does yard sales called me about the vise and worked out arrangements with seller to get it to me.

2. Stoneware gallon jug

3. Wiss 12 inch Upholstery, Carpet and Canvas Shears

4. Simpson MultiMeter #260 and series 6, along with a Wigginton Square D Voltage Tester AC/DC cat # 5008

5. 2 speed Hunter Zephair rotating Vintage Fan that works.

6. Craftsman 1/2" 44975 ratchet, Craftsman 1/2" BE ratchet and Snap On 3/8" FV71 ratchet.

7. The three on front left of pic, I couldn't find a mfg. Others in pic include a pair of Starrett No. 1-5-1/2 inch adjustable jaw cutters/nippers, a Utica B-269 Retaining Ring Pliers and a Sargent pliers.

It's been an emotional week at work and I'm glad this week is at it's end. My young apprentice's wife had a successful double lung transplant last night saving her life with only days to spare. The lord works miracles! She all of 28 years old ...
Anyway Having to work all this coming weekend I was lucky enough to catch a few sales after work. I managed to over spend again on a tool box but I have never seen a Gerstner in my area in 20 + years. It's not in the best of shape and needs all new felt. (already ordered). The leather needs attention but I have a fellow collector/ saddle maker that will help me with the leather issues. I had to give 175 for it and another 50 for the contents. The old gal selling it begged me not to flip it and I assured her it would be restored and kept. So that's what I'm gona do. It will replace my Kennedy . I think it's a fair upgrade once restored.
I also ended up with a cookie sheet piled with wrench's , Brands like Plomb, Blackhawk, Bluepoint, SK, Craftsman, Cornwell, Armstrong, Case IH, Ford, Wizzard, Indestro, duro chrome, Williams , Bonney and a few others.
A box full concrete finish tools , Craftsman =V= 1/4 " socket set complete with nice metal case and a Bridgeport ratchet /driver set. This little set is nice!
Also an eagle thumb pump oil can, Diamond Caulk Horse Shoe adjustable and channel joint pliers.
M-16 rifle cleaning kit, hitch pin, Cast Iron Winchester plate and belt buckle . Cobblers hammer, True Temper BSA Hatchet and a Stanley rabbet plane with fence but no depth gauge. .
In the box was several Stanley rule and level boxwood and brass folding rules, calipers, pocket knives, MF combo square, luffkin rustless rule , Starrett rule and several other small items.
All tolled, 267.00

BB I picked up the same No. index last weekend. Mine was made by General, so either General made that for Sears, or the same index maker made them for both.

Picked up some tools this morning. There was a light rain and there weren't many crowds. These tools were in a bin outside getting rained on. Who leaves machinist tools get wet?

When I got home I wiped them down and put them in oven at 200 degrees to dry off any remaining moisture.

I went up to pay and was thinking $40 would be a great deal. The seller starting adding everything up - $15 for telescope gauges, $3 each for thread gauges, $2 each for the hammers then was counting each caliper. As he counted I figured I would go $60 tops. He asks for $25 which I gladly hand over.

Also got these in way home for $15 from another sale.

It's been a quiet day in the neighborhood. Stopped at 3 sales and made a token purchase at each one. First sale found me a 3/8 Snap on breaker, an unused craftsman grinding wheel and a clamp on vise. Second stop got me 4 Swiss electronics pliers/cutters for 50c each and last stop a compressor. The compressor is basically unused for $25 and I have flipped it already and more than paid for the day.





Also saw this at last sale. A little unusual for a blue collar neighborhood.

It must have been posh car day today. I had to help jump start a 1975 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow at an estate sale this morning. They were only asking $7500, but it probably needed $30K in repairs to make it auction worthy. It needs a repainting, the picture from the listing doesn't show the issues with the paint. Jed Clampett would be fine with it as-is though.
