Page 27 on my end. On every vBulletin forum I change settings to show as many posts as possible on each page. Personal preference, I guess.

Great to see the Garage coming together! The place really looks leaps and bounds closer to "finished" with all that concrete.

looks great. Finally I can uncross my fingers worrying about the opening in the floor with everyone walking around Have you thought about a lift assist or some way to move the grids when needed? Could you add an angle iron to the sides and ends so you dont have to deal with any edges?

Wednesday - May 11, 2016

At about 8:30 this morning the phone rang. It was the Security Guys on their way to the Lone Beech Garage to finish up their part of the build.





The Security Junction Box was programed with names and delays for each of Man Doors and Garage Doors. The Garage Door sensors were mounted on the new Garage Door Panels. I was given a briefing on how to use the Security Keypads and the CCTV software.






About noon the Floor Finishing Crew arrived to start their work. Their tools from left to right are: Grinding Machines, Dust Control Machines & the various Grinding Elements.

The first order of business was the cleaning of the concrete. The crew used scraping tools to cleave the "stuff" that has been dropped onto the floor over the past 4 months. They also got their tools into the control joints to get them cleaned out properly.








Then the grinding started. This is going to take a while. I believe there will be a couple of sessions of grinding with 2 different grit elements. The densifier will then be applied; a bit more grinding; densifier again and then the sealer.






Since I will be gone I won't be able to document what's going on for the next few days. However, the eye in the sky is recording what's going on. Perhaps I'll be able to download some stills from the NVR when I get back from Indiana on Sunday evening.

I'd better take the manual with me.

Just thinking out loud here Could you mount a winch on the wall opposite of the shelter, when needed you would run the line out hook it on the far edge of the grate and the winch would simply tip them up on edge...Other than an over head hoist or portable engine hoist, that would be my thinking...Once they were on edge would you be able to do anything with them from there or would you still be stuck with need ing a way to lift them, I have no idea how much they weigh sooo. Like I said just thinking out loud

I think they weigh pretty close to 150 pounds each. Once you get hold of an edge they can be leveraged up with some effort but doing it manually would get old quick. I'll think of something but I'm not in a hurry to do so... yet.

Yes, I hope to move the Bendpak 2-post lift from the house garage - where it has been sitting in its shipping cocoon for a year and a half now - to the Lone Beech Garage shortly after the floors are finished.

There will be a need to deal with the grates. Even when there aren't tornados around there are some things that won't play well with a lift. For example:






There are four of these are in my basement at the moment. No that's not my '55 in the background. This picture was taken at the location that I bought this particular tractor at a few years ago.

Ah yes, the orange grasshopper also known as the Allis-Chalmers Model G. What, praytell, can one man do with four of them? I have seen a bunch of them decorating farm stead front lawns but never one under power. Will you be restoring all four or will some be canibalized for the good of the others?

Do they attract the same sort of passionate following as the Ford Jubilee or anything John Deere? Around here we have green and red tractor camps and they are highly polorized. The greens are, of course, John Deere fanatics and the reds are International Harvester and amalgimated brands loyalists. Think it has to do with whateve tractor your folks had on the farm when you were growing up.

I was thinking a 4 wheel cart just high enough to get the 4 grates under it. It would be larger than the grate and have 4 hooks that drop down, either with motors or a crank. Wheel it over the first and hook and lift, wheel it over the second and put the first on top and continue down until it hooks the second, and on till you get all four, then wheel it out of the way. Or maybe put wheels at the wall ends of the track, remove one then slide the others out of the way depending where you are wokring....

3 of the 4 are running. I hope to have all 4 going after the Lone Beech Garage is finished.

One of the four is the one my grandfather purchased brand new in 1955. 2 of the remaining 3 represent interesting variants (to me) of the breed. I will probably sell the 4th "generic" one at some point.

They do attract some attention at a show due to their unusual design and, if you're in to tractors, they are easy to add to a collection as they don't take up a lot of space.

You are also correct that - like so many things collected - there is usually an emotional attachment between the collector and the object. I have a lot of seat time in this particular type of tractor.

Great minds think alike. Ha! I've been mulling over a similar cart concept.

However, what would really be the trick would be to have a device mounted high on the wall of the "Shelter". The device would grip the grate well enough to lift up the edge of the grate on one side of the span and allow the grate to pivot to vertical against that wall of the shelter.

Not nearly as simple as the cart concept but would solve the "where do I put the grates" question.

they do indeed think alike as I had a similar thought of pivoting them down into the shelter. I was worried the grates against the wall would be an irritant though while you were working in an already tight space.

A single model G really doesn't take up a huge amount of space. 4 of them do eat up some real estate but not as bad as you might think. I'll have to try to take picture when I get back from Indiana.

Those "G"s are pretty cool. Have spent a lot of time in the seat of a Farmall Cub and in the last 8 years or so, the Super A, love using the old tractors despite not being the fastest way to cut grass. If you could also get your wife a running model, you could probably get your grass-cutting time down a lot

I jumped in on this build yesterday and very impressed. I'm getting ready to do something very similar. I may have missed it but what could/would you have done differently to protect the concrete after the pour and eliminate this grinder?

Mini-Splits-love them but found that normal HVAC guys don't understand them well. Most I have done business with assume they function the same as a conventional system using their gauges to measure loads/pressure. If you ever run into an issue with codes (you will) on the unit(s) indicating high or low pressure, make certain the condenser is evacuated and make certain the condenser is refilled back with the exact amount of coolant (Weight) indicated on the data plate. You will save yourself a bunch of money and hassle. Sounds weird but very accurate.

Tornado Shelter- How will you communicate with the outside world if the structure above collapses atop the shelter preventing your exit?

The model G with a mower probably isn't the grass cutting tool of choice for my yard. Now if I had a big flat field to mow that might be different.

I think we could have avoided having to grind the concrete if some rudimentary protection had been put down during the paint and drywall. Some protection for the floor was put down during the painting but it was incomplete and perhaps the integrity of the protection was not maintained at all times.

Regarding being trapped in the tornado shelter... normally have my cell phone with me but, failing that, we are inside the city limits of a decent size town. Either the police or other first responders should find us relatively soon after such a calamity. Barring that, maybe the looters will be kind enough to call 911 upon hearing our pitiful cries for help.

Friday - May 13, 2016

I got a phone call this afternoon from the boss of the Floor Finishing Crew. He indicated that they just finished giving entire floor its first level of grinding.

I was surprised it had taken that long to get past this first step. I don't know if they'er planning on working tomorrow or not but, at this rate, it sounds like the first application of the densifier won't happen until Monday at the earliest.

I hope to be back home on Sunday so it should be interesting to see what the floor looks like at that point.

Sunday - May 15, 2016

Had to catch a 6:10 am flight from Evansville, IN to Atlanta, GA this morning. That meant getting up at 4:00 am at the Lone Beech Melon Farm just south of Vincennes, IN to get to the airport on time.

Other than the sleep depravation, it was a great visit back home and I got to see quite a few relatives at the reunion.

Got back to our home in Peachtree City, GA at about 9:30 am and - after getting caught up on a few things - took a long nap. That complete, I was able to function somewhat efficiently and was going through the mail, paying some bills that had arrived in our absence, when I heard activity outside.





To my surprise a couple of fellows from the Floor Finishing Crew were in the building putting filler in quite a few places in the concrete floor. I spoke with them briefly and they indicated that they thought the plan was to start putting down the first application of densifier at some point tomorrow.






I took a quick picture of their equipment stationed on top the Tornado Shelter Grates and then I returned to catch up on a few chores that needed to be done after a 4-day absence.

It should be interesting to see what takes place tomorrow!

Monday - May 16, 2016

The Floor Finishing Crew didn't show up till around 10:00 this morning.





They finished the prep of the concrete in the Woodshop.






The tools and densifier were prepared.






The densifier was applied.






The crew left and the densifer was allowed to soak into the concrete.


Grinding with finer grinding pads will continue tomorrow.

Tuesday - May 17, 2016


Grinding at 120/140 Grit today. There were some weights on the machines today that I don't believe were being used on the earlier phases of grinding.





The Woodshop gets worked over.






All the of the edges and such have to be done by hand.






The Auto/Metal Shop is ground.






The boss came by at the end of the day to inspect today's work.


I believe the second application of densifier will be applied tomorrow. The crew was short a couple of workers today otherwise I think they would have got it applied today.

After the densifier has been applied the next step will be for all the floors will be hit with a 200 grit abrasive followed by the sealer.
