Drives-I've thought about the hand saw vises if that's what you're talking about. The ones I've seen seem like they have an awfully thin (though long) contact point. Some of my saws are very large, and I've never seen anything id be comfortable putting my big saws in. I'm also very happy with the ability of the leather jaw covers over the last few months.

Evergreen, you could put two of those hand saw vises side by side and probably be rock steady. a support platform for the motor and you'd have it...

that'd work outlaw. Many ways to clamp a chainsaw, just want mine to be a 5" bear, baked BLO, leather jaw caps, and painted lettering! :) I actually sit sharpening my saws, most guys stand, so it's nice to swivel base the angle I want on the fly. The 5" jaw with one hand swivel loosen/lockdown makes for quick adjustments when I adjust my posture.

EG: not sure these old clamp style saw vises might work for your needs, but they usually can be found pretty reasonably so might be worth a shot. sorry I don't have a picture handy because it's in my old crashing laptop. maybe somebody else can post up a few pictures or VA's magic search function can find the ones posted if you haven't seen them I think their jaws are maybe 12 inches or at least 10.

JROBB: thinning the herd? nice to see you are still looking in on us.

Yes I will thin the herd, just have to determine who stays and goes. Therapy must have worked, I rarely search for vises, and when I do there is nothing available. Don't know if supply dried up or I'm overly picky now. I was on the hunt for a couple arbor presses though and managed to snag a famco 1, 3, and S. They're far harder to find and are gone instantly so I'm happy with that. I try to stay on top of the thread, working a lot of hours at the new job though.

Crs-I imagine your talking about these? It'd make sense to me that they have to be aligned evenly to spread even load to the casting.

EGT: Yes those are the nuts I was talking about. I may have seen a video involving adjusting gibs at Tubalcain's site.

Also, somewhere recently I saw something that might suit your sharpening needs. It was a foot operated saw vise meant for sharpening two-man saws.

Evergreentree,

I snatched up my first FPU on Friday as well a 6" in pretty nice shape like yours.

They sure are solid little vise aren't they.

Evergreen, I use my old beater to hold chainsaw bars also.---608 Columbian holds everything from my 14'' liming saw to the 24'' firewood saw, as tight as a jug.---My question is, when you've got your saw vised up for sharpening, do you ever file your drags before the teeth are totally worn down?

Watson: nice find and I agree the FPU Bison vises are great vises and undervalued in my opinion.

VA & EG: care to start a thread either one of you in FREE PARKING about chain saw sharpening? I'm really tired of taking mine up to a guy that buzzes them with his grinder so I only get a couple uses out of the chain.

Outlaw: that's sort of what I was thinking because those little saw vises are or were built mainly for handsaws and not designed to hold the weight of a chain saw motor. I didn't think to add another vise though, but makes perfect sense.

Finally put my hands on a REED today. I stopped at the recycling yard at lunch and walked away with most of a #204 for just $14! It's missing the base. Anyone have a spare?
There are 3 patent dates with the most recent being August 1914.

Watch eBay, a swivel base for that will come along eventually. I found one for a 206 amd that is far more rare.

USER: PM Jake to chat about REED bases because I think he's been looking for a 4 footed one for maybe 3 years now. I think he just figured out another option and maybe he'll post if he sees your REED. he was just talking about on this thread a few days ago so look back a few pages and you might see it.

nice find and it's probably a 1920's made Reed and I just posted my 104 non swivel a few days ago showing a member the original color which is similar to yours.

That was'nt e-bay where you got yours, I believe that used to be mine. I still have the spare lockdowns with the cat paws sitting on my bench after making yours. Have you posted pic's of your 206, if so I missed them. Would enjoy a peek.

Here is a nice baby that a friend has on his desk at work. The copper colored jaws are made from Beryllium Copper and I used a mask when building them.

Please educate me as to why you wore a mask when you made those jaws.
Thanks, John

The dust from grinding and some machining could give you cancer. I know a ToolMaker that worked at Rocky Flats by Golden Colorado that had one lung removed because of the disease.

This is what Wikipedia say's. However, inhalation of dust, mist, or fume containing beryllium can cause a serious lung condition (chronic beryllium disease) Stuff always scared me but it is a great product for springs and wear plates in the machining area.

Crs-thanks

Va-I never file my rakers down on my climber, but my big saws yea. I have a leveler for it, but I prefer to do it by eye. I prefer a smaller jaw size vise for sharpening. I'm currently using a Parker 2300 4"ish jaw, that's closer to 5" with the leather caps on it. Suites my positioning better with a smaller vise.

I have seen the hand saw vise that swivels.

Watson-I do dig the fpu. really good design, but some corners where cut imo. Base locks really well. I am happy to have the bass awkwards vise that looks like a turtle! This is the first vise my 3yo son crushed something with. I'll never sell it!

Drives-Uggh, machine sharpening! Not the same!

Picked up a 51 bulldog this morning. Is it just me who stops at auctions before work for vise?! Haha

Chilang: I agree those Ping beryllium clubs were awesome. I actually couldn't play with them because I hit them too far and spun the ball to much. Sad thing one of the best pros around our area about 10 years older than I am died of cancer and i'm pretty sure it was because of grinding his and friend's beryllium wedge soles. i'm sure I've got a few of those particle running around in my lungs too, but most of the time I had a couple clubmakers do the grind unless I needed to tweek it.

KM: hope you had a good mask.

VA: isn't one of your vises made of that stuff?

EG: start a thread on chain sharpening and teaching us how. I for sure would love to see a tip or two even if only to keep the chain sharp on my RYOBI 18v chainsaw.

Yes I did, but if I didn't get lucky I'd be reserved to scrounging on the bay. Have not really worked on it, too many other things going on. I did have to acetylene torch off the jaw screws because they were so mushroomed and mangled I broke multiple tools trying. I test fit your new jaws and they fit fantastic.

I was cleaning up a bit today and took a pic of whats kept me busy the last few months. Joe warned me about the vise addiction, but he kept posting pics of his finds dragging me into this dark underworld of vise obsession. Now all I think about is the Reed 206 with replaceable jaws I passed on, or the Wilton C1 I missed on CL for 100 bucks mint condition, or the Morgan Chicago 88 I sold. I need to get a grip.

Chilang: at least you can't say you don't spiff them up quick and go for quality old vises. I think I might have been the one to tell you to BEE CAREFUL because that rabbit hole goes plenty deep before you stop spending a Benjamin on a vise when you have $105 in your wallet.

good luck with that.

ORD: that 5 inch Columbian is a big one and I bet it will look even better with pipe jaws. anybody still have the design for the Columbian pipe jaws for a 205? mine are stuck in my ailing laptop, but can't recall which member gave them to me in case Ord wants to make a pair.

Drive, I'm really not sure because I don't know my metals that good.---I do know it was the hardest brass I ever tried to pound on.---The back end of the slide had been used as an anvil and was dished in on top and bellied out on the sides.---Would barely slide in and out at first.---So I cold pounded it back in shape which took 3 days in all.---Would pound till my arm got tired.---About an hour and a half at a time is all I could stand.---Hardest brass I've ever seen.---I've straitened out steel plate that thick a whole lot easier.

Im going to put this together tomorrow. Emmert 6a fresh out of the oven, coated with BLO. This is my buddies, I sold him the vise a month ago. His machinist did all the custom work. So very awesome.

Vise is stamped 11-29-15 on the top behind the anvil.

Joe: i love the patina of baked on BLO. didn't you say it really stinks when you cook BLO or did you find a solution to that?

cool looking vise and if you hadn't already built your own it should go back together. did you happen to take pictures before you took it apart?

VA: i guess you could call all that HAMMERING good exercise. happy to here you fixed it and probably worthy of talking about in the 101 thread. some members and definitely the public don't have a clue that you shouldn't hit a vise with a BFH.

BLO stinks, so I cooked it in my oven outside. 375 for 5 hours. The owner took pics beforehand. Here's a pic of it in the oven

I know I've seen a few posted, but does anyone know the vise that looks a lot like the big bear series, but has pipe jaws? I think it's a Hollands, I think. Maybe Erie. Photo or catalog would be great. Thanks guys!

EGT: I don't know what Big Bear features you are looking for but here is a picture of a Hollands that I think looks like a Big Bear and a 1928 Parker ad for comparison.

EG: well I was doing pretty well not wanting to buy Parker so all the Bear talk was just fine and then you ask for pictures of a Holland's which might be one of my favorite makers and CRS posts a picture and I have to have one. i'd gladly pay $60 for a new 6 inch wide jaw Holland's so where do I sign up for that Amazon special.

CRS: thanks for the picture

Joe: just curious after cooking does the baked on BLO still stink? aren't you driving to go see a BIG UN today?

Just like paint, once the solvents are gone there is no smell. Waiting to see the big Parker. Very excited, no rush as no one knows about it. Seller knows what it is.

Finally finished my buddy's Emmert 6A. I'll put this one against any I've seen. New spindle, spindle nut, smooth jaws, swivel lock handle, main handle. Everything was integrated beautifully. BLO really tied it all together. Wish I could keep it. I offered the guy the $200 he paid me plus 100 for his labor. Of course the greedy ******* said no!:lol_hitti

Amazing machine, far more than a simple vise. Great work.
