Today I spent the bulk of the day encountering a parade of horribles in the Delta 767-400 flight simulator. Glad to have that behind me. As a result, I didn't get to document the activities on the building site in real time.

20160614-05.jpg 20160614-06.jpg

I was pleased with the work the Dirt Movers had accomplished during the day. All the concrete work that had previously been sitting several inches proud of the existing terrain has been feathered in nicely.

20160614-07.jpg

This was possible because, in addition to the dirt that had been temporarily moved from the building site, I had plenty of dirt available on the south side of my house. At some point I intend to use more of this dirt to finalize the landscaping in front of, and on the south side of, my house.

Today the Concrete Crew showed up to build a little wall between the Loading Dock Stairs and the steep bit of terrain adjacent to the stairs. I was concerned that if we didn't do something to make for a more gentle slope in this area, the terrain would suffer from erosion and the driveway would be undermined.

20160615-01.jpg 20160615-02.jpg 20160615-03.jpg

A form was built for the concrete to be poured into to create the wall.

20160615-04.jpg 20160615-05.jpg 20160615-06.jpg

The concrete was poured and shaped.

20160615-07.jpg

At the end of the day the concrete was curing in the form. I think this wall will allow enough dirt to be placed behind it to create a gentle slope that will allow grass to grow to hold the ground in position during a good rain.

SB: sorry i haven't stopped by earlier to congratulate you on putting together an awesome thread about your build. i haven't read it all yet and hopefully will at some point.

i did like that the flat bed could pull right up to the ramp and unload at ground level. that is handy. nice design and will it work for a semi too or just the flatbed?

do you still have your little Standard vise? have you bought any big brothers for him?

take care

DrivesItFar,

Thanks for the kind words and for stopping by!

The Loading Dock is a "standard" 4-feet tall so I suppose if we could get a semi trailer into that space it would work. A skilled driver probably could do it. When I was in the planning phase of the building I wasn't thinking of accommodating anything much larger than the flat bed that made that delivery.

20160606-04.jpg 20160606-05.jpg

I haven't bolted them down yet but the Standard Vise and a Yost 33C are in the Lone Beech Garage waiting to begin work. I do still need to press the Pipe Jaw Pins into position on the Yost.

Best regards,

Scott

Did you come out simulated dead?

I was allowed to "fly" a B-52 in a simulator once. Made a creditable take off and loop around the track. Unfortunately I took the control tower out when trying to land. I think my instructor/copilot had something to do with that because the controls were non-responsive at that point. This was almost 30 years ago and my impression afterwards was how real it seemed. Can't imagine what "simulation" is like now.

Bib Overalls,

It went OK; no deaths simulated or otherwise. Of course I learned a few things - that's the reason we do this stuff.

Yes the simulators have improved dramatically over the years, particularly the visuals. I can't imagine what that B-52 would be like - that's an old-school plane.
Hmm... since I participated in the development of the original 767 almost 40 years ago I guess my airplane is old-school too.
Ha!

20160616-01.jpg

A single man arrived this morning to remove the forms from yesterday's concrete work.

20160616-02.jpg 20160616-03.jpg

I think the addition of this little wall will do the trick in allowing more dirt to be brought in to keep the driveway stable.

I decided this evening it was time to start moving tractors from the basement to the Lone Beech Garage.

20160616-04.jpg

G20304 was the first in the line of tractors in the basement so it was the first to make the move. It took a while to get the battery charged up enough to fire up the engine. This tractor was built in 1949.

20160616-05.jpg 20160616-06.jpg

G20304 in its new home. The front left tire left a bit of a mark on the concrete as I parked the tractor. This evening I picked up a few Oil Drip Pans from Walmart to place under these ancient machines. They sell a galvanized item that is nearly 4 feet long by about 2 feet wide for about $12.00. A perfect size for my needs.

20160616-07.jpg

I was thinking I would being all 4 tractors into the building and line them up side by side with their tails pointing towards the wall. However, in hindsight, I think I will be happier having them parked pointing towards the garage door. I will park them so it's a 2 x 2 configuration. Two tractors side by side following 2 others in a similar arrangement.

I think this updated orientation will make it easier to move them out of the way whenever I want to bring another vehicle into the drive-through bay.

^^^^^^. What he said.

Tractor looks the size of some lawn tractors of today.

My sim ride was in 1984 as backseater of a F-4. The visual was a canopy taped over with masking tape. The sim did have motion. My roommate put plane in a spin which I took over and got leveled out. Pretty proud of myself since I'm not a pilot. (But did stay in the Air Force barracks Inn last night)

Ha! They (garages) are never big enough; that's a fact!

In addition to being almost the same size, many lawn tractors probably have more horsepower than these Allis-Chalmers Model G's.

20160617-01.jpg

The first order of business this morning was reorienting G20304 to face the Garage Door. I do believe this is a better way to store my herd of tractors.

20160617-02.jpg 20160617-03.jpg

Next tractor to be moved was G3112. Built in 1948, it was purchased new by Crawford County, IL to mow road right of way and other county property. It was purchased from the county and restored by a fellow in Hutsonville, IL. I purchased it from that gentleman 5 years ago.

20160617-04.jpg

Clockwise from the lower left: G28594, G29253, G20304, G3112.

As the day progressed what had been a cloudless sky this morning changed to dark and threatening. G29253's battery just wouldn't cooperate in providing enough cranking power to start the tractor. It's possible that if I had piddled long enough I might have got it to start. With the weather deteriorating, my son and I just pushed G29253 and G28594 (Family tractor - doesn't run at the moment) from the basement garage to the Lone Beech Garage.

Thunder and lightening approaching limited the "posing" of the individual tractors as they were parked in their new home.

20160617-05.jpg 20160617-06.jpg

The basement garage looks much different now. Getting the tractors out of the way was essential to being able to move stationary tools from the basement to the Lone Beech Garage in the near future.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Monday - June 20, 2016

The first day of summer was quite comfortable here in Georgia. Particularly if one compares today's temperatures to what we've had the past couple of weeks.

Today there was not a lot of activity on the building site. A fellow came out to adjust a balky window in the Mezzanine. He knocked that out pretty quickly. Since I had the 2002 Toyota Corolla in the Lone Beech Garage over the Tornado Shelter to mess with an O2 Sensor, I didn't look over his shoulder to see what he did to fix it.

Plumbers are supposed to be out tomorrow to install the various plumbing fixtures.

Since that is supposed to happen, I wanted to seal up a couple of Control Joints that are in the vicinity of where the toilet will be.

2b564cf0-49ec-4b0e-bad9-8a849ecd61ef_400.jpg

I obtained a tube of Silkaflex from Home Depot and a screen spline tool. I had acquired 100 feet of 1/4 inch backer rod from Amazon a few days ago.

20160620-01.jpg 20160620-02.jpg 20160620-03.jpg

I used some painters tape on each side of the control joint to minimize any mess I might make when trying to get the Sikaflex into the narrow saw cut. Then I used the screen spline tool to insert the Backer Rod into the control joint.

20160620-04.jpg 20160620-05.jpg 20160620-06.jpg

After the Sikaflex was applied, I removed the painters tape. This whole process was basically an experiment but I was pretty happy with the way it turned out.

20160620-07.jpg

The place the toilet will be set tomorrow was where I really wanted to get the control joints sealed up.

I'll be doing the this process for the whole building over the next few days. I want to get the control joints sealed up to keep sawdust, dirt, etc. from getting down in those joints. I think I've got about 500 linear feet of control joints to fill.

I did about 22 feet today.

Looking good, moving forwards. When you get everything done you will have quite the joint. :headscrat

Thanks guys!

My back hasn't been the same since I did an emergency evacuation from a MD-11 back in 2002. I start to feel it when I bend over for a while so this type of work is unpleasant for me.

Still it needs to be done. As a friend of mine once told me:

How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Tuesday - June 21, 2016

I was expecting the plumbers to show up this morning. Around noon I sent the Builder an email asking for an update. The response indicated that the plumbers would be here this week sometime but not today.

Last night I had ordered 400 feet of 1/4-inch Backer Rod from Amazon and this morning I had gone to Home Depot and picked up several of the large SikaFlex tubes. I also purchased a large "Contractor's Size" caulk gun and a LOT of painters tape.

The Backer Rod purchase won't arrive until tomorrow afternoon but I still had about 75 feet left from the first Backer Rod. I figured I had more than enough backer rod for one of the large tubes of SikaFlex.

20160621-01.jpg

I put down the tape.

20160621-02.jpg

Inserted the Backer Rod.

20160621-03.jpg 20160621-04.jpg 20160621-05.jpg

My son came out to help with the sealant. Once you start squirting the stuff out, it's hard to get it stopped. So having another person standing by to assist if needed is very useful. He also could take some pictures of the application process.

20160621-06.jpg 20160621-07.jpg

With the long runs of tape, it was also useful to have a person to help keep that under control as it is being pulled up. The more of this I do, the more I realize I would not have been happy with the control joints unsealed. Sealing these joints needs to be done.

The large tube of SikaFlex covered very close to 60 linear feet of control joint.

With the control joints in the bathroom, around the doors and around the Tornado Shelter now sealed, the process should go a little quicker. The work should be easier with the longer runs with no obstacles to work around.

I figure I'm pretty close to 20% done with this chore.

Well done, you could always use a creeper to roll around on or a stool of some sort, that might help the knees a little but not so much the back. I really like the look of the joints now and I'm sure you'll enjoy clean up time a lot more now.

You might consider using the really cheap caulking gun instead of the more "pro" version. They have less leverage and can release quicker. The version you have is certainly better made (I have the same one as well) but control of the feed isn't it's forte.

I know this comment won't do you any good at this point. But, I wonder if you could have saved yourself the time, expense and effort of the tape if you had done this before the floor finishers arrived. Do you think their grinders/polishers would have damaged the caulk?

JB,

I think a whole-shop bridge crane is what I need! That plus a harness similar to what Tom Cruise had in Mission Impossible 1.

wasfast,

Well I've made the investment so at this point I'll stick with it. I don't know if any caulk gun would work too much better. This material is self-leveling and it is pretty runny. It's manageable but you need to get the pressure off the feed rod and have a rag ready when you want to stop the application process.

On yesterday's effort, I purposefully started on the long run of control joint before I moved into the bathroom. By the time I got to the joints in the bathroom, the tube was over half empty and it was easier to successfully release the feed rod pressure.

At least that's what I told myself. Ha!

camarosrus69,

My knee jerk reaction is that the flexible sealant and the grinding elements probably would not have played well together. The guy that owns the company that did my floors was a squadron mate of mine when I was in the Navy. Next time I see him I'll ask him if he's ever tried that approach.

20160622-01.jpg

The plumbers showed up sometime after noon.

20160622-02.jpg 20160622-03.jpg 20160622-04.jpg

They hooked up all the fixtures on the main floor.

20160622-05.jpg

When I caught up with them they were in the Mezzanine setting up the Hot Water Heater and the Sink Cabinet.

20160622-06.jpg 20160622-07.jpg

The JB Weld repair I made to the deep sink drain in Post 1222 worked fine. I need to do some clean up to the sinks but the Mezzanine Kitchenette is moving forward.

I think all the plumbing is now complete. The portapotty will be removed from the property as soon as possible. It will be nice not to have to pay that bill when, lately, the only people using it were the Postman and the Trashman.

Continued in next post...

Continued...

20160622-11.jpg

400 feet of Backer Rod arrived in today's mail. With this package delivered, it was time to take another bite of the elephant.

20160622-12.jpg 20160622-13.jpg

I prepared another 60 feet of Control Joint by taping and inserting the Backer Rod.

20160622-14.jpg

Another empty tube of SikaFlex in the trash can. I figure it's going to take between 8 & 9 large tubes of sealant to complete all the Control Joints. With what I have done so far I should be a bit over 1/4 done.

SB: good to have the plumbing hooked up and one less bill that is for certain. what does a port a potty cost in your part of the world to rent each month? how often do they stop by to clean it or is that a call you make and another charge?

Your shop is looking amazing. it looks like you almost need racks or lifts to put those cool old machines up higher to take up less floor space or is that the plan to have part of the shop be a sort of museum?

i still need to read more of your thread, but from what i've seen you have one of the best looking shop garages on GJ.

keep up the great work and don't envy the caulking the expansion joints work you are doing and still need to do.

cheers

DrivesItFar,

Thank you so much for your kind words regarding this project.

I've been looking through the bills that my builder forwards to me and it appears that the portapotty charge is just under $86 per month. Looks like the unit is $15 per month and the service charge for a weekly visit is $70.

I hadn't thought about the tractors being anywhere except on the floor of the Lone Beech Garage. They're pretty easy to move around and, if need be, they will be pushed out the door for whatever temporary need would require that.

Still... you've given me something to think about. I think I'll know more when the building becomes an operational entity.

Didn't do any application of the SikaFlex in the control joints today. I'll try to get another tube applied tomorrow. Taken in manageable bites, it isn't too bad of a job.

Best regards,

Scott

Thursday - June 23, 2016

I didn't think anything was going to happen on the building site today. I was out checking out a nearby estate sale when my phone rang: It was my Builder.

It seems that the worker that was going to install a gas valve on the Tankless Water Heater was at the Lone Beech Garage and he couldn't get in since I hadn't unlocked the doors this morning. This was the first I had heard of this task but I was only 10 minutes away so I came home and let him in.

20160623-01.jpg

The valve was installed and the worker left.

I'm expecting to get a bid for some hydroseeding either tomorrow or on Monday. Once that is done we will be getting really close to getting a final inspection on the building.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Friday - June 24, 2016

The weather here has been hot & dry for some time. So, despite that, today I gave the go-ahead to accept a bid for hydro seeding the bare dirt around the Lone Beech Garage. We are forecast for a decent chance of rain on Monday & Tuesday next week. So maybe we'll get some moisture in the ground and then hydro seed. After that, it will be a challenge to keep the seeds constantly moist until they germinate.

Yesterday I attended an nearby estate sale.

20160624-01.jpg 20160624-02.jpg 20160624-03.jpg

I picked up this cabinet for $5. It is 28-inches tall; 19-inches wide; 25-inches long. It is steel and very solid and, based on the olive drab interior and some stray contents inside, I think it probably was originally in a military facility. The shelves are attached on the inside with screws so I can modify that arrangement. The shelf that extends out is also a nice feature. Not sure where I will use it yet.

I'm still trying to figure out what the angle iron welded horizontally would be for and also the hole located in the side at the bottom. Perhaps some sort of fixture could be attached to the box.

20160624-04.jpg

Today I visited a warehouse full of "treasures" in Atlanta - well, technically Decatur. Among other interesting things were these two used Fire Extinguisher Cabinets. I purchased them for the Lone Beech Garage.

20160624-05.jpg 20160624-06.jpg

This evening, just before my wife and I went out for supper, I prepared another section of Control Joint for SikaFlex sealant. I hope to get another tube installed tomorrow morning.

Maybe the steel cabinet had a twin with a shelf between. Nice score on fire extinguisher cabinets. I keep knocking mine so I'm on the look out for the same.

shortykorte,

Regarding the cabinet... hard to say what else might have been involved with this "system". One last piece of the puzzle - not visible in the pictures I posted - is that the top of the cabinet has a "lip".

So, to me, it looks like something might have originally sat in the top of the cabinet.

Somebody probably knows exactly what the history of the cabinet is. I just have to find the right place to post the picture.

Best regards,

Scott

Pretty darn hot outside today! Weather.com says it is 99 degrees in Peachtree City GA. Grateful for a building that has conditioned air inside.

Got another tube of SikaFlex into the control joints. My wife assisted by standing by for whatever needs that might occur during the application process and also to take some pictures.

When I finished this tube I had applied 3 large tubes and one small one. I have one 24 foot length of control joint left in the Woodshop then I will be done with that room. With that room done and all the control joints around the Tornado Shelter and in the Bathroom already complete, I am close to half way across the building.

Having only gone through about 3-1/3 large tubes something wasn't adding up to my 500 foot estimate of control joints needing sealing. The building is 46' x 60' with 5 control joints cut in each direction. I did the math and came up with over 500' in my estimate.

However, the Tornado Shelter eats up about 18 foot of one control joint and another 30 feet is buried in under one of the Woodshop walls. A few other odds and ends and the total control joint sealing requirement is probably closer to 450 feet.

Which is plenty!

SB: well you certainly didn't over pay for that little cabinet. no clue what it might have been used for, but i started a metal cabinet thread a while ago that gets a lot of views so you might post it there and here's the link. i've posted a few that i've picked up and some other pretty cool cabinets and bins are on that thread if you have time to take a look.

Scott, I can't help you with the cabinets history but it is a great score none the less for $5, well done.

1/2 Cup,

Thanks! I'm sure my spouse is wondering what I'm going to do with all my "great scores". Ha!

DrivesItFar,

Thanks for the link to the Vintage Cabinet Thread. I posted the information on this cabinet there.

I had to chuckle a bit about you not having air conditioning at your Pacific NW home. The house we bought 38 years ago - just south of Bellevue proper - didn't have air conditioning either.

My wife still talks about having a fire in the fireplace on the 4th of July in 1978!

Thanks for stopping by and the kind words about my build.

Best regards,

Scott

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

You would if you lived in Atlanta.

Bib Overalls,

'nuff said.

I don't know how they did it before air conditioning. My spouse tells a story about her USMC dad being trained at Athens GA one summer in the early 60's. Her mom sought relief from the sweltering heat for herself and her two daughters in a Movie Theater with AIR CONDITIONING. They were watching Old Yeller (I think) and at some point there is a scene with a bunch of cows and the dialog had someone mention "slaughtering cattle". Either my wife or her sister asked what they meant by "slaughtering" and my mother-in-law answered that they would be killing the cows.

"THEY'RE KILLING THE COWS!", my spouse and sister-in-law exclaimed! They now both burst into tears and were crying pitifully and loudly. My mother-in-law desperately tried to calm them down as her greatest fear was that this caterwauling would get them ejected from the theater and back out into the hellish weather.

Ha!

Looking good! Estate sales, I need to look in to those. Probably in the paper. I don't get that.
