Ahhh, now I know why prices on these are so high -- one individual owns 90% of all the baby bullets ever produced!

Wonder if I leave my 945 and 935 alone together in a dark room for a while if I'll end up with a litter or two of 920's...

Well they are all pretty old, You might have better luck if you had a vise **** Vid running in the dark room.

And maybe some "Vise-arga", HAHA!

There is another really nice one ending soon in Camillus, New York.

Yeah thanks four outbidding me ! Im done there so one last bidder. Cant you guys let me have one vise????:D

Striper,

No outbidding from me.

I'll be on the sidelines for quite a while as I have more than I can handle plus I already own one those babies. They're great vises for small projects, I love mine.

We have two identical Ridgid ones which I bought new at a company closing auction a lot of years ago.
I do not know anything about them but they are quite nice finished.

Cleaned up this recent 8300 acquisition, along with a fresh pair of aluminum jaws from Kevin. I decided to just do a light clean up so I could preserve the sticker on the tail. I was surprised the by size difference between the 8300 (6/71 date) and a much earlier No. 3 (12/45 date).

The one macgee: is referring to is not just really nice, it is REALLY nice. If a GJ member gets it and paints it, many of us will disapprove.

Ordinarily I would agree with several others who have said "your vise, your color" but this is an exception.

I was given this little guy today. The Oring to open the vise seems to be broken.

So is the vise market collapsing???

This baby bullet, original paint, 5 year warranty sticker still in place, mounted on a powerball jr. just went for $355 on eBay. I figured it would have closed at $500 in the old days.
Bidding was at $330 with 5 seconds to go. Did one of you guys swoop in to score a nice baby?

ps. I finally got one for myself, on a swivel base tho. Paid less than this. Will post pics when it arrives next weekend.

Macgee's little Prentiss is holding it's own right now.---It is a nice one but does have a chip on the jaw.---Only flaw I see.---Auction about over.

I bought this one off EBay about 6 years ago plus a real nice no named table vise for $35.00 plus shipping.---Vise was completely covered in rust so looked real pathetic and unsalvageable.---I couldn't even see the separation crack between the swivel jaw and the body because of the rust.---But I saw the swivel pin and new what it was.---My how prices have changed.:shocking:

I think seasonal shift. Its summer, schools out, lots of other distractions. so Eprey prices often are somewhat lower this time of year.

Winter cabin fever is the Eprey sellers friend...

I gave my girlfriend a picture, name and rough measurements of one of these. Told her if she wanted me to give her a ring, she had to present me with one of these restored by her.

Something tells me she won't be my fiance if prices keep going like they do! :bounce:

It would depend on the condition, wouldn't it? I'd love to find one with the original paint and pin-striping. but heck I wouldn't say no to a rust bucket like VA found...

My dad has the vise bug, he found this nice Columbian 604 at a tag sale on half off day for $20. There are some hammer marks and the handle is tweaked, but otherwise it's nice.

Nice score for your dad, Dave! Will make a great user. Don't count on making much money if you flip it.
Columbians are the Rodney Dangerfields of the vise world. I bought a 505 1/2 for not much more than that off a C/L ad that was several days old. Sure it had surface rust, but nothing else was wrong. Jaw serrations were still strong.
I will give it an electric soaking and repaint because of its history. It was used in the Kaiser shipyards during WWII
If there are any vets reading this who served on a Liberty ship, this vise may have helped build your vessel. I am open to trades or ??? to the right person. I don't have a certificate of authenticity so museums are out. Going on what the seller told me. He lived only a few miles from the old shipyards in Richmond CA. He had no reason to lie to me selling this vise for $30

Unusual vise for sale in Chico, CA.
Seller says no ID marks just the numerals 15
5 inch wide jaws

Anybody recognize this weird one? Anybody want it for their collection? Seller wants $175 Wants and gets might be different numbers of course. It's 150 miles from me.

Shift: I'm going to guess that it's a Lewis.

Joe - any hints on what you are picking up tomorrow? Did you buy the tiger that was for sale in Lancaster?

Getting a Reed 204 1/2, 2- Parker 954s a Parker 973 and a 2" Keystone. Doing a barter plus cash deal.

Yep, Lewis.

grouseman: Insomnia allows me to respond to posts early. Your Lewis looks like the bottom one in my post except that, if you look at the rear end of your static jaw just above the slide, you seem to be missing your dingus. Man, I hate it when that happens.

zoomie: Thanks. I saw that weird slide arrangement and thought it looked familiar. Somehow, I was able to locate that ad among my clutter...um... collection.

If you look close, VA's is a fixed jaw, swivel base, the one Shiftless asked about is a swivel jaw, fixed base. Hence, not missing a dingus (I hate when that happens too).

CRS :

Nice work!
Thanks for identifying that mystery vise for me and the rest of the inquiring minds haunting this thread. Came up with the answer and posted it barely 2 hours after I asked. In the wee hours of Monday morning too!

I don't plan to buy it.
As of now, I don't have an urge nor nearly enough space or $$$ to have one example of each vise ever made. It is not particularly attractive or useful either. For a Joe Striper price locally I would pick it up, of course!

ragtop: I couldn't tell for sure but I thought grouseman's might have been a fixed jaw but when would I ever have been able to make that joke again?

nypdblue: Nice find on that Emmert. Please post more pix. I hope to finish the restoration of mine soon.

Shift: You're welcome. I somehow was able to dig that ad out from my stuff.

Shift: looks like a 150 mile road trip is in your future. some of those big old open screw vises really have heft to them. did the owner say how much it weighs? It also might be the first one like that I've seen with a swivel jaw and I do like the covered open screw design. good luck and hope you get it so we can see more pictures.

CRS: I think pulling up catalog pages in an instant is what is going to keep you young so keep up the great work. thanks

NY: that might be the first Emmert I've seen like that without any cracks or welds in a while. nice find and that should clean up nicely.

ALL: moved some things around in my storage and while I was there took a few pictures of my Little Cabinet. there are a few gems in there that i'll never part with, but i'm sure a few will find members or clients and friends benches this coming year because I have 5 more areas where I stuff these.

Please tell me if/where I can buy a decent "CHEAP" vice made out of either real cast-steel or ductile-iron.

A brand and price range please....

One that swivels with about 3" or 4" jaw width is all for my workbench.

I read not to buy the CHEAP HFT cast gray-iron vices because they break too easy so I want a better quality one if it won't cost me a pound of flesh...

I don't need an expensive heavy-duty one that a Machine Shop would use, just for my hobbies is all.

Thanks in advance,

pdq67

Mmmmm....I think I spy that nice 6" Rock Island on the bottom shelf

PDG: good question. if you go in your Garage Journal profile and put in your location you might be surprised what will happen when you ask a question like that in the future especially if you are a participating member and get to know a few of us.

as you might have read a few of us have more than a few vises and some of the guys might even restore them to pay their bills so being able to buy an old vise checked out by one of them that doesn't have shipping costs involved might actually be a much better option than buying a new one.

welcome to the group and if a pound of flesh is more than $150 i bet you'll find what you need here for less with the specs you asked for.

GMan: good eye and i think it's twin non swiveler is behind it
