Yes we need plans by Friday at 5! My idea was already shot down using the old wood as a top will be nice. I'll second Craptain idea with using wood glue. It's probably how it was put together and so only fitting you fix it that way.

Well you asked for pictures of this old beat up stained bench, here they are.


Well, I'm going to,have and used the top, the bottom is too rough, many recesses, didn't see this as its under the drawers.

Note the rabbited slides for the drawers, this is a great example of old time woodworking.

I happen to have some denatured alcohol close by and wipe down the stained spots with a rag, I like the look of how this ended up,after wiping down.

Thinking of giving it a good sanding, maybe with a floor sander? Not to get it perfect, just to get the dry layer off and open up the grain some, and some of the marks. We were talking about wiping down with boiled linseed oil, or staining? What do you all think?

The outside strip popped off, it was loose. Look at the square nuts for the tie rods, I tightened a couple, you could hear the wood creak a little.

I think this is maple, what say you?

I'm going to mount this beast on there, somehow. Got to workout the steel frame so it clears the vise.

I'm no wood expert by any means but I think that looks like maple. I would probably do what you're talking about Craig, sand it down a little and use linseed oil or stain. It'll make it a lot prettier. It's still a nice bench even if you don't do anything with it.

I definitely wouldn't go linseed oil. After reading some on linseed oil, it's probably not the best solution since this will be a multi-use bench top.

I've had a couple of you mention using bench like it is and I agree, it's a well built bench, could prolly sit a elephant, couple of Tampas ladies or just about whatever I wanted on it.
But.... The Kennedy boxes won't fit and I'd have no space for a sit down bench like I want.

I'll go ahead and fix up the top, it'll be a little bit before I actually build the frame, meanwhile ill keep a open mind of what else I could do.

On my current steel frame design, I will have 4 casters, so I need to have a stiff enough frame to support the top. The span from legs on each end is just a little over 6', not a bunch but still want to give plenty of support in case I ever set my Dodge Megacab back seat on it again.
I'll post up a sketch later when it's presentable. Taumac and Shorty have imposed a deadline. Don't want to run the risk of then showing up because I missed a deadline

Funny you mention that, I see this being used for a table out in the shop wheni cook. The sauce would attract the fire ants here though.

Thinking about it, it'll get sanded down some, the deeper marks will just be some character history. I'm going to add my own dings I'm sure.

Start with a good scrubbing with Murphy's Oil Soap. I get best results with the spray bottle version used directly. Then see what you have. Then, if you want to go further follow up with DNA to de-grease before sanding with 80 grit on a belt sander. Unless it is really bad I wouldn't be staining at all. Maybe a sealer that is all.

The "Lets see your workbench" thread has several hydraulic jack solutions for steel framed benches but this one uses nothing but wood:

As a card-carrying cheapskate, I could see a couple of lengths of all-thread doing the job of the scissor jacks but there is a definite cool factor with this approach.

Bob, that would be the ticket if I was going to use the bench as is, but this bench is a ways off from my years long plan. It's kinda what I had to do to get it out of the corner at the sale. There is no dragging this around.

I'm thinking an intervention might be in order.

Actually, I had a plan similar, boxes were back to back, but that knocked out vise space on that end.

Maybe the box in the center on the side opposite the stool area, then a wood vise each end on the long side and one one the end, even though I don't have a end vise and you will turn me in for it.
Shorty is the wood vise placement authority.

Only one wood vise, I'm wanting to put all three on there, I know, crazy for a small bench, but it's what this place does to you.

While deep into discussions and thoughts during the layout of this bench, I remembered that I installed some conduits before I poured the slab. These conduits were to power my table saw and other stationary tools out in the middle of the floor and not have cords to trip over. I placed a female threaded adapter on the end of a pvc 90 so it was flush with the surface of the slab. I put a flush plug and duct tape to keep,clean.

This was 11 years ago, and of course this new bench fell right between two of them. I have enough room to move bench over the top of this conduit and will be able to use. So now I can have a power strip on the bench with cords to trip on and none hanging from overhead. I feel like I hit a small lottery.

It took me a hour to find. I have the tall Vidmars along the wall where the conduit is stub up by the wall, couldn't see from below, so had to get a ladder and climb onto and look down behind to find. All good except I knock the ladder over while on top of the 60" cabinet, thank god the shop is in tight confines and it fell against the drill press. Still a trick though trying to reach down with one leg to prop back up.

You'll find all the documentation of the alleged near miss located in the bottom of the 12 oz brown containers which are located in the black fridge, I mean file cabinet to your left when you come in.

Any reenactment will have to be performed by under dude of safety.

Can't have blue wood vise in center on left end, steel frame there.luckly I bought a left hand wood vise today, please move and change color to gray.
No vises on bottom of wood top, vise on bottom beam in the way of my feet.
Need to remove vises on the right end, this is against the wall on the revised layout you did of my shop.
I like the box on the center, looks good.
Now I need to go buy some more vises.

Geeze, my buddies impose a deadline for bench drawing, I beat deadline and they copy my drawing on a neater draw program and take all the credit, what's this journal coming to anyway?

Dan, Shorty did a great job of interpreting my drawing, picking up on the steel shapes. The program he's using shows the bench in a much better view than I could do on Visio.
You should see what he did to my shop layout drawing.

OH OH believe it or not Shorty agreed to Lista bench being set up and working WITHOUT painting it. CB has adopted my style about putting things in place getting them working and then a future project on the road would be painting. Shorty agreed! I was shocked!

Dan, the steel frame will be black, the boxes blue, same as pallet rack, or close, I really want a little darker blue.

Here is a mock up of how bench will be laid out vise wise. The vise on the right will not be used.
The square tubing is to show where the supports will be.
I did this to to flush out the little details of the vises and how they related to framing.

I'll have two 10" vises on the one side, and a 7" on the corner and the Parker on the right corner. The Parker has the bolt that runs through bench top and is the pivot for the swivel and also allows for quick removal.

Temporary caster mount.

With the temp casters on, it brought the top of bench to about 42", which works great for using a stool at and also standing next to is a nice height for me.
Keep in mind I'm only using the top of this bench, a steel frame with 5-6" casters will be built.

No real pictures to update with.

Didn't get much shop time in, was working on replace four fence post. So, as soon as I finished that, I was reattaching the horse wire fence to new post, I went to adjust a existing post and it snapped. So I'm back to four more post to replace.


Used the new to me bench, in its temporary storage state, to work on a small repair project. I like the 42" bench top height, so I will make sure that happens.
I even clamped on one of the wood vises, after using, wondering how did I make it with out?
Moved some more stuff out of the way to make a path to pull my sons bench out so I make some modes to it and it will be gone, more floor space. This will open a good chunk of a corner of the shop for me to move the lathe into and let's things start falling into place.
