I must admit that it's getting harder everyday to log onto this site. And even harder not to hijack someone else's thread. Too many jokers in the same deck make it hard to play a straight game of cards. The humor level has been turned up considerably. I feel that I have to read through all the threads of all the characters here before I can make a comment (at the risk of repeating myself several times) Maybe I need to write one post that corresponds to all involved and copy and paste on each thread. ( That would save a lot of typing)

Anyway, I'm always here and reading, just don't always post a comment.

Andy,, you have brought back many a memory of my Grand Father ( my mums father ) he was notorious for stirring up the grand children, myself included.

Drone Update​

I haven't mentioned that we have been scheduled to another two days intensive training on the Drone Operations and its Application software for today and tomorrow.

We have been having some issues internally in regards to Privacy, data capture, health and safety, legal and licencing, corporate compliance, corporate risk and governance issues that has been a pain in the **** to be honest, we call that due process. seeing us grounded

Any way cutting a long story short and five stakeholder engagement meetings later and its still on going.

As my old Boss said "1/2 Cup you will never beat the system, but you can make the system work for you"

Making the system work for us is what we did and rightly or wrongly the training went ahead..

I might add at this point the instructor had said that the props were subject to a recall and would be replaced under warranty in due course.


Our instructor put us through 3 hours of revision on what we had already gone through a couple of months ago. Pre flight checks complete and new autonomous missions planned to map a local soccer field and its infrastructure were down loaded at the office to the drone ready to hit the go button.

Drove to the local field and set up, preflight checks gone over again and we hit the go button and 22 minutes later the drone under its own steam returned to the home way point, mission accomplished with 44 mg of data and images to work with..

Now it was time for some hands on interactive play with the drone...


Me first Change battery, post flight and pre-flight checks TICK

Two circuits of the field, just to get the feel of the controls at 60 feet off the ground and then it all went PEAR SHAPED the drone just fell from the sky out of control and landed heavily on its back, my heart just sank let me tell you.

$45 K worth of drone, how am I going to write this incident up..

Again cutting a long saga in to a few words or less, one of the prop blades broke in flight causing the loss of control and subsequent crash landing. The only obvious damage was to the camera gimbal which now rotates 360 degrees and not the 180 it was designed to do.

Thank goodness its all covered under warranty as the unit now has to go back to Sweden to be repaired.


I did manage to download all the flight data on the sim from all our outings so when I can work through the software issues with our ICT dept I should be able to post a few pics and not before time I might add.

So tomorrows training has now been delayed a few weeks..

i agree making the system work for you is about the only way we can move forward any more, but it sure would be nice to go back to the days of the past maybe 100 years ago when it was GET R DONE as best you can.

Terrick, unfortunately I had the video camera off at the time of the incident and it happened so fast, a drone falling from 60 ft drops like a sack of bricks let me tell you. They don't glide at all.
The one saving grace is that the soccer field grass cover softened the landing somewhat.

drives, the blades and landing gear on our drone are seen as consumable items and we can replace then our selves. That was the irony of the whole deal that the company had not supplied new blades in the first place.

Our preflight inspections covered the blades in detail and there were no obvious defects.

We can put the incident down to Mechanical failure and not Pilot error fortunately.. This time.....

I have said this before some times you just have to do what you have to do to get the job done, case in point. It is also better to ask for forgiveness after the fact as well..

I have loaded the software package on to my personal computer ( not connected to our network in any way ) and copied the files here as well. We will see how that goes in the next few days.

GB, ****** is right, anyway the drone is on its way to Melbourne tonight for an initial assessment and all the flight logs have been downloaded so we will see what comes of that, in any case it will be a two week turn around....

Our training focused on the mapping software yesterday and we will be doing another day flying when the drone is back..

I was left in an total state of shock last night, arrived home from work as one does and Andrew was returning my trailer into its new home in the West Wing. To my surprise the lawns were mown and I thought that was good of him to do so. and said a big thank you. His reply was sorry but I did not mow the lawns.

In 39 years, 8 months and 2 days of being married to Mrs 1/2 Cup I can not remember the last time she has mown a lawn.
Let alone start a mower.

To my utter amazement I was all her work and a top job at that I might add..

So that's one more item on the To Do List ticked off for this weekend.

PS I did tell her that I had refuelled the mower just in case..

1/2, my wife recons that the only time she gets quiet is when she is on the mower. 72" Toro, it does the nature strip and the front 5 acres in about 2 hours flat. I don't complain because it gives me QST.

Bob its the other way around here at a ratio of 10 to 1.

10 Dog shows to one car show or swap meet, but I don't mind at all. When you look at it statistically that 10 dog shows = 10 days of Quality Shed Time.

Mrs 1/2 Cup is a keeper for sure, in fact I would be buggered with out her to be honest..

The Rover K Series build.

. Its at a bit of a stalemate at the moment while we are waiting on the new Cam shafts to arrive from the UK.
. The original engine did not come with all the miscellaneous bits and pieces of a complete engine. Things like manifold studs, sump plug, rocker cover cap, hardware and the like. So I have made a list for Andrew and he is chasing all that up for me at the moment mainly because I would like to leave the old engine in a complete state and not have to rob bits and pieces of it for the new build.


The West Wing.

. Mrs 1/2 Cup ordered a new entrance door that I picked up last night from the big Green Box store. This was custom built as it was not a standard size. A nice solid core door that weighs a ton. I should get that installed today hopefully.

The local swap meet is on tomorrow so I think I will be Missing in Action for a few hours if its not raining..

drives, I did not take any pictures of the installation as such but I do have before and after shots. I will endeavour to explain the process as best I can.

. The first thing to do is accurately measure the existing door and check the clearance all around to ensure there is an even gap between the frame and door.
. In my case I was not replacing the frame and side light windows.

This is the before picture of the West Wings front entrance door:

Note that the original door being a hollow core door was stating to delaminate at the bottom edge and just looked a bit out of place.

Being a non standard size the door had to be a custom build which BTW can be done to any style you like.

I chose a solid core door and just a fairly plain on at that, its styling matching the existing internal doors with no windows.

Importantly once you have your height and width measurement you will also need to check the door thickness as they do come in different sizes.

The other issue I had to contend with, being a retro fit into an existing frame are:

. Hinges and the existing rebates on the frame. In selecting the hinge I brought a set that were longer than the original and made sure that the width matched the door thickness. I chose some heavy industrial stainless units due to the new door being substantially heavier.
. The lock set, I reused the existing lock arrangement in the new door and they are best fitted after the door is hung by simply finding the center line of the striker plate that remained in the frame.

. The door frame was way out of square and more like a parallelogram. Luckily the side jambs were parallel to each other so I allowed a little additional length in the overall height of the new door to cater for this, which as it turned out I only had to plane a little off the top edge to get the door clearances nice an even when the door was closed all the way around. I did this after the door was hung.

Key learnings:

. Research the task and understand what you are about to undertake.
. Measure 6 times and cut once.
. Have the right tools for the job.
. A nice and sharp set of chisels is a must.
. Check and recheck.
. Accurately centre the hinge screw holes and remember that pilot holes are your friends..

The process:

. Check that the door that I brought was the correct size.
. Measure and rebate the hinges to the door, ensuring that the hinge location will align an cover the existing frame hinge rebate.
. Position the door in the open position against the frame and prop it at the correct height in relation to the frame allowing the fitted clearance to the frame.
. Mark and rebate the frame to suit the new hinges allowing the correct offset as this allows for a little clearance in the closed position.
. I glued and plugged the existing screw holes with a dowel as some of them aligned with the new hinge screw hole locations as it just gave me some fresh timber to work with.

The whole job took about four hours with most of that time going back and forth to the Shed Downunder to get bits and pieces.

Door locks, you wouldn't believe it that straight after the photo was taken, Mrs 1/2 Cup came home from the hardware store with a new lock set. She didn't like the fact that they looked a bit scruffy.
