Only half as impressive as the 60x meatsis picked up. The 956 is still a nice upgrade from the 955 I had on the stand. 883f85472c0b04e82d9e762915989757.jpg

That 956 is a good score Veeps. Looks really clean too. if you ask me, a 6 inch vise is the perfect size for every day use.

It is a good size, and being a Parker, bigger than most any other brand 6" vise. It is clean. It has smooth jaws and they look unused.

MEATSIS: are you just buying up all the 8 inchers now so Joe can't buy one? dang it i still want to see one in person and you own a shop full now. WELL DONE AGAIN!!

VA: speaking of shipping any chance you might want to share how that cool looking German vice that you bought was shipped over here on the new Shipping 101 thread i started to help some of the members with their shipping needs? i liked it too, but thought shipping costs might triple the cost of the vise.

Mark
: you do amazing work restoring any vise, but you are surely getting a knack for those Polish ones. WELL DONE

S4: i have my doubts that the vise you posted that is only 18 inches long has a 6 inch wide jaw. all the old US vises i've owned with 6 inch wide jaws are at least 22 inches long and most are 24 and longer. you might want to save the piggy bank for the next one and yes a couple benjamins for a good 150 pound vise is a good buy if in good shape.

Well, I'm tired of being a lurker here. I started at the beginning of the thread and am just up to 1610 pages. I'll admit that I feel a little intimidated. Some of you fellas make a guy feel "inadequate" with the hardware you're showing. I love all the advice you've given out, as well as the vice p0rn.

Almost all of these are all going to go through a restoration. Most have sentimental value. They are:

My Craftsman with the great patina
Art Deco Wilton
the Eclipse I pulled from Grandmas basement
Athol No. 1
Globemaster
"Swivelin' *******" Craftsman

Not pictured is the Rock Island 94. That one will get a special restoration, since it came from dad. I have a picture from the early 70's. Dad is at the vise and I'm standing there with my wide-striped pants. Stayin' classy.

I hope "Almost" means not the CM 519_? in the first pic. It would be a shame to restore that one.

Drive, the shipping was $76.00 through DHL.---That's pretty high but it was across the pond.---Been any higher I'd of had to pass.

I'll put a pic and the info in your thread tomorrow.---That thread is going to be a handy tool I'm thinking.---Be good information when one finds a monster out of driving distance.

MLSAC: either you've been reading and getting what at least i'm saying that my 2 favorite vises might be Rock Island and Craftsman's 519x's and you've got both. i'm also impressed that you've read that many pages before posting because i read the first 500 pages a couple times before i joined and have rarely looked back since. probably because VA and a couple other members seem to dig up stuff like magic if we need some old vise pictures or information.

in any case welcome to the forum and of course finally posting on the vise thread.

what # is your 519x Craftsman? that might be as nice as the 5196 i own that i've only cleaned and wouldn't think of doing anything more to it other than greasing it and using it like a vise. it looks like it's ready for work and is that your bench? so as Marty mentioned BEE NICE to the Craftsman cause looks pretty darn good as is.

Meatsis: i like how you throw out a little teaser for Joe with the 209 that you probably forgot you had one sitting under a bench. ever get tired of moving those 250+ pounders?

VA: thanks and post up a few of your pallets on the Shipping 101 thread if you have time to.

I must say I like that art deco Wilton, and the Pow-R-Arm has an art deco touch too.

The Craftsman is pretty minty. Have you looked on the back of the slide for a manufacture date?

Thanks. The vise could use a little cleaning, but I'll stop there. It gets used - as it should. Yes, it is my bench. It's a work in progress, like everything else.

I haven't really been following this thread, but I did just get this about a month ago at the most miserable outdoor auction ever; Paid 90 for the anvil, 50 for the big vise.

The anvil is 150lbs. The deal was so good I just bought it, I haven't even tried to look for a maker's mark. I'm not a big anvil guy, but everyone should have one in their garage. Now I just need a garage....

SB: there is an anvil thread over in the general tool section if you want to post up more pictures of your little anvil over there. can you post more pictures of that old Craftsman made by Rock Island vise though and maybe tell us how heavy and how wide the jaws are? nice finds and was the auction dirty or unorganized or just terrible weather?

Milisac reminded me about our quest to find the Craftsman 519x's maker when he posted up the date stamps so does anybody have their Rock Island vises with date stamps to post and show us if maybe the same size and style stamp?

also i came across this wood vise in a Craftsman box with a familiar # on it. could this just be a later version of Craftsman 5195 or another clue?

I've got several vise...I'd say I've picked up 10 or so this year between cleaning out my grandparent's garage and going to this auction.
The auction was somewhat disorganized, but it was also ALL DAY with nowhere to hide from the 108 degree day. I think I have 2 or 3 craftsman, a huge Buffalo or two, and a bunch of smaller ones, most I got for free or nearly free. SOMEWHERE in a box I have a brand new Craftsman, I'd guess early 1950's, still in the box that I found at my grandparent's place.

I was recommended to put this into the main vise thread. I am guessing this is it? Anyway below is copy and pasted from a thread I started:

I'm digging around to find a good used vise and discovered garage journal yesterday.

Anyway, one potential vise is below. But there is no information online, only a couple of mediocre photos. And I can't decide if it's worth the trip.

As you can see, it's a Record. It's made in England. And apparently it's never even been used (WTF? ). But I can't tell what size it is, at all. Nothing I can reference size with. I don't even know, did Record have little light duty vises? The only thing that might give a clue is what appears to be " L6 " on the moving jaw. I have spent an hour google-image-searching to match the " L6" to known record vises online, but with no luck.

Images are posted same size as originals... can't get any more detail.

I'm looking for a larger heavy duty vise, so if this is just a little guy than it's not going to be worth it for me to drive several hours to check it out.

Any clues to what size this is would be very much appreciated.

ps -- I am inclined to want to get a Rock Island, for nostalgia of my home town. But if this a nice big vise and I can get a good deal, then money talks.

That would bring a pretty penny from many of us here!

It's in an, "When I come across this again, I'll put it on ebay..." box. I have about a dozen boxes of tools that came from my grandparent's place; I'll dig tonight and see if I can find it. If I can, I'll post pics here.

Well it was suggested to me to come to this forum and its well known vise thread to maybe find out what I have here a $10 flea mkt buy but for the life of me cant find any name or other ID marks cast into it. It's like a small machinist's vice It's about 9" long 5.5 high with a 2 in jaw width and 4" throat and fixed base.

It has an interesting 45 degree angle cast in as part of the front 90 degree table lock. There is also a notch in the front jaw that fits a bolt perfect when the head is clamped in the jaws, looks like it was original cut...any other comments on that?

I set out it next to my Athol 613 1/2

So check out the photos.

Gee I 've only gone thru 100 pages so far!

I've come across several of these vises with just a big number on them. Wondering if any of you know what they are. No company names or anything else on them. I do have an older craftsman vise that is similar in that it says 4 1/2 on it like these do. But not sure what these are. I'm assuming Chinese made. He wants 55 for this one.

SB: I (we) would love to see pictures of a 50 year old Craftsman vise in a box even if it's a wood vise, but if it's a 519x even better. post them up if you have some time. sounds like you have a few already in your vise family and might i suggest not rushing to sell your grand dad's stuff because it's only yours once in case you want to use them later and remember the old guy a bit more.

Kirk: it looks like Dutch saw your other thread and gave you a little 411 about the Record. the more i look at that one you posted the more i think the jaws are replacement and maybe aluminum. not sure i'd take a 2 hour drive each way for it, but it's a solid vise even with replacement jaws.

DFB: sorry i can't say i've seen a vise with that cut out on the top of the dynamic jaw yet. it also looks like it's been welded on the static unless that fuzzy picture is just making it look like that instead of a rough casting.

welcome to the forum and even though it's welded it has some character and guessing late 1800's or maybe early 1900's made. by who have no idea

BRX: yes it's Chinese made and not a very valuable vise. i'd pass on spend the $50 to $100+ on a good old US or English made one. or if you really need a vise and you don't see many vises in your area i'd maybe offer him $30.

Thank you for that welcome and thanks that insight. Sorry about the fuzzy pic cheap camera phone...so yes there is weld bead built up on both sides (nice matching job too :D) looks like reinforcement possibly? Inspecting on the bottom and on the inside I don't see anything obvious like a crack line that makes me think it has been broken and repaired but don't really know

I'm going to clean it up a little and smooth it down some though.

DFB: post more pics of that vise and the Athol when you get clearer pics and some time to do so after you spiff them up. if you have any questions on repairs you can also look at the Vise Repair 101 thread we have over in Vintage tools and here's the link.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252830

MARTY: looks like a good size FPU Bison polish made vice and since i don't remember you posting one i'd say it needs to be yours. good luck

I picked up this pipe vise (yoke vise?) at a garage sale. I never have had a need for a pipe vise, just wondering if this vise could come in handy for something other than pipe? Silly question but just wondering.

Here's one that came out of my grandparent's garage. I'd be surprised if it were less than 50 years old. Still new in the box.

I don't remember if I posted here a year or two ago, but that's how long I've been cleaning out his garage. It's a 5 stall garage that's 2 stories tall that you couldn't even walk into. Believe it or not, I'm finally about done cleaning it, and I only took 1 run to the scrapyard, and only threw away 4 boxes of trash. We had a massive, massive sale last year where we sold about everything for a dollar. Yes, a dollar. My grandma took in about 7500 bucks. Of course, the obviously more expensive tools, power tools, saws, etc were all sold for more, but he had no real junk. The best stuff came to my house, but it's all in boxes and I don't even remember what I grabbed. I thought it was 12 boxes, but I was just out there. It's probably 12x3 boxes. No one really knows what was his and what was yard sale buys. Except the 600 lb Anvil he made himself. But I was told my Uncles would wear me as a coat if I even thought about touching it.

Bought two bench vises today.

First, a very small 3" jaw vise, a model 12W Tesco of Tulsa OK

The second one was a 4" jaw vise, a model 954 by Charles Parker. Took it all apart and gave it a good wire wheeling and put it back together with a good lube. Works like it should.
