That 956 is a good score Veeps. Looks really clean too. if you ask me, a 6 inch vise is the perfect size for every day use.
"Just" built like a tank? I noticed an 8" columbian is "only" 150 pounds by comparison.
MEATSIS: are you just buying up all the 8 inchers now so Joe can't buy one? dang it i still want to see one in person and you own a shop full now. WELL DONE AGAIN!!.

Meatsis is Satan. Nuff said...I thought Veeps was a vise vacuum!!!!!!![]()

I hope "Almost" means not the CM 519_? in the first pic. It would be a shame to restore that one.Well, I'm tired of being a lurker here. I started at the beginning of the thread and am just up to 1610 pages. I'll admit that I feel a little intimidated. Some of you fellas make a guy feel "inadequate" with the hardware you're showing. I love all the advice you've given out, as well as the vice p0rn.
Almost all of these are all going to go through a restoration. Most have sentimental value. They are:
My Craftsman with the great patina
Art Deco Wilton
the Eclipse I pulled from Grandmas basement
Athol No. 1
Globemaster
"Swivelin' *******" Craftsman
Not pictured is the Rock Island 94. That one will get a special restoration, since it came from dad. I have a picture from the early 70's. Dad is at the vise and I'm standing there with my wide-striped pants. Stayin' classy.

NJ Marty - not a chance I'll be redoing that Craftsman. I love the patina, and it's nice and snug.I hope "Almost" means not the CM 519_? in the first pic. It would be a shame to restore that one.
Thanks. The vise could use a little cleaning, but I'll stop there. It gets used - as it should. Yes, it is my bench. It's a work in progress, like everything else.MLSAC: either you've been reading and getting what at least i'm saying that my 2 favorite vises might be Rock Island and Craftsman's 519x's and you've got both. i'm also impressed that you've read that many pages before posting because i read the first 500 pages a couple times before i joined and have rarely looked back since. probably because VA and a couple other members seem to dig up stuff like magic if we need some old vise pictures or information.
in any case welcome to the forum and of course finally posting on the vise thread.
what # is your 519x Craftsman? that might be as nice as the 5196 i own that i've only cleaned and wouldn't think of doing anything more to it other than greasing it and using it like a vise. it looks like it's ready for work and is that your bench? so as Marty mentioned BEE NICE to the Craftsman cause looks pretty darn good as is.

SB: there is an anvil thread over in the general tool section if you want to post up more pictures of your little anvil over there. can you post more pictures of that old Craftsman made by Rock Island vise though and maybe tell us how heavy and how wide the jaws are? nice finds and was the auction dirty or unorganized or just terrible weather?
Milisac reminded me about our quest to find the Craftsman 519x's maker when he posted up the date stamps so does anybody have their Rock Island vises with date stamps to post and show us if maybe the same size and style stamp?
also i came across this wood vise in a Craftsman box with a familiar # on it. could this just be a later version of Craftsman 5195 or another clue?
SOMEWHERE in a box I have a brand new Craftsman, I'd guess early 1950's, still in the box that I found at my grandparent's place.
That would bring a pretty penny from many of us here!
drivesitfar;5973089[B said:DFB: [/B]sorry i can't say i've seen a vise with that cut out on the top of the dynamic jaw yet. it also looks like it's been welded on the static unless that fuzzy picture is just making it look like that instead of a rough casting.
welcome to the forum and even though it's welded it has some character and guessing late 1800's or maybe early 1900's made. by who have no idea
SB:
BRX: yes it's Chinese made and not a very valuable vise. i'd pass on spend the $50 to $100+ on a good old US or English made one. or if you really need a vise and you don't see many vises in your area i'd maybe offer him $30.
SB: I (we) would love to see pictures of a 50 year old Craftsman vise in a box even if it's a wood vise, but if it's a 519x even better. post them up if you have some time. sounds like you have a few already in your vise family and might i suggest not rushing to sell your grand dad's stuff because it's only yours once in case you want to use them later and remember the old guy a bit more.
Kirk: it looks like Dutch saw your other thread and gave you a little 411 about the Record. the more i look at that one you posted the more i think the jaws are replacement and maybe aluminum. not sure i'd take a 2 hour drive each way for it, but it's a solid vise even with replacement jaws.

Bought two bench vises today.
First, a very small 3" jaw vise, a model 12W Tesco of Tulsa OK
The second one was a 4" jaw vise, a model 954 by Charles Parker. Took it all apart and gave it a good wire wheeling and put it back together with a good lube. Works like it should.
