I think you need 2 rocket scientists, 1 quantum mathematician, and a economics professor to figure out how all Sears coupons and points work.

If I have 10 surprise points on 25, and 7 surprise points on 35, do I have 17 surprise points on 35?

Just ordered my 18" pipe wrench and got $5.04 back in points, as well - thanks for posting!

Noticed that the Craftsman branded Knipex Cobra set is down to $34.19 for members, with $4.78 back in points. I don't think I've seen it any lower.

^^^ They're about to phase out the original design and stick with this plastic-handle design for the time being.

Went to see if there were anymore on clearance with the regular 3/4 sockets and they were all gone. Maybe there getting rid of them in stores?

991 means it is a return. Some one purchased it and returned it after they were done with it.

Not always. Occasionally stores will 991 items that are on clearance but still new. For example, my store had 3 brand new C3 hammer drills, in the sealed boxes, all on 991. These were a clearance item online, but marked down further on 991 at the store.

Yup. Same goes for seasonal goods (lawn furniture right now, Christmas trees after Christmas).

Yeah. A lot of the "used" clearance items are brand new, never opened. Something else sears does that makes no sense. Makes me wonder how many great deals in new stuff I passes I'd back in the day, because the sticker said used, and I looked no further. 😔

Do you know if this is controlled through corporate, or decided at the individual store level? It just seems like one store might 991 a clearance item, but other stores don't, making me think somebody at the store makes the decision.

It is both. Corporate can decide what items are no longer going to be sold (AC's go on severe markdown company wide) but can also be set at the store level (same AC's can be marked down further so the store gets credit for the sale rather than nothing when it gets sent back to warehousing for re-sale elsewhere). Same goes for single items they used as a display but want sold off. People can order them in, but no longer want to carry stock in store (the manager can set a price).

It's kinda screwed up, but this is Sears we're talking about. The business decisions haven't been sane in years.

*EDIT*
Nearly forgot. I've yet to see a 991 tag that didn't say used. It's probably option 1 and the person making the ticket is lazy and just selects it every time. If it's missing something, they'll just write it in the comment section.

HOT BUY 48 piece craftsman Wrench set. Not sure if they are a waste of time being made in china. $99.99 + $9.99 in points.

I was wondering if anyone knows if the 20 piece stubby set is USA made?

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-prof...150327xVigLink&aff=Y&PID=6147012&AID=11042411

Only you can decide if China wrenches are a waste of time. Personally, I think that if you are going to buy Chinese tools, you may as well pay Harbor Freight prices.

The 20 piece stubby set is made in China. You can see for yourself in the Q&A section on the product page, where a rep from Sears confirms.

Thanks! Everything I read to 2015 about them was USA made but looks like they switched end of '15.

Thanks for the reply. I worked in the tool dept. a couple years back, but never asked the MCA's or back room manager how it worked. I have seen stacks of new 991 stickers, and they all came with the used box checked, so I think they're printed that way.

It also depends on if the manager of the department printed the ticket (ovens and the like are usually our hardlines manager) or if it was returns or damaged goods that our RTV backroom associate took care of (in other words, just followed whatever price corporate gave us for that item... half the time worse than normal sale price).

It's why you can also get big differences in 991's prices.

when i was a manager with sears 5 years ago, we would 991 stuff as used just to get it out of the store. marking it used will let you update the price every 2 weeks vs new which will only update every 4.

Well I retired from Sears in 2001 and I am sure a lot has changed in the last 15 yrs. Back then we had to mark stuff as used or make them as discontinued or clearance. I am sure Timmy is correct being he is still employed with them. Sorry If I gave bad advise. Rich

Yeah people on here talked up the bolt cutter. I ordered one and haven't got to use it yet but I'm pretty sure I wasted $30.

They also mention potential Chinese companies

Husqvarna is a gardening tool company
Stanley / B&D & Apex are power tools and hand tools type companies

Will be interesting if Craftsman is divided among these three categories

Two years from now, buy yourself a Craftsman snow blower, will be from Husqvarna
Two years from now, buy yourself a pair of Craftsman Evolv wrenches, will be from Apex
Two years from now, buy yourself a Craftsman circular saw, sander, etc--will be from Stanley B&D

If its Made in USA--will be probably from the existing agreement set forth between Craftsman and Western Forge. Remember that Craftsman is a separate entity from Sears. Sears will out the window, but Craftsman, Kenmore, and others will likely not--they will continue to exist and cater more towards the general crowd

I was checking this out the other day. Prospective bidders include Stanley/B&D, Apex and Husqvarna

I hope Apex buys them and shifts production back to Apex and starts making Made in the USA Craftsman again. That would be awesome.

I do believe that Apex is still making the hardline Craftsman tools in Asia. Most of Apex's other brands are made overseas, so I wouldn't count on Craftsman being made in the states if they're the buyers.

This is basically how it is now. All three have supplied Craftsman-branded tools either now or in the past.

Yeah, all the bidders already have contracts with Sears Holdings.

These are the companies that decide if they want their factories in the USA or somewhere else. When people complain about Craftsman going overseas, they're really complaining about these bidders.

Craftsman 17 pc. Screwdriver Set

Not bad if you need a screwdriver set - made in the USA. Excellent reviews. $18 from $28.

Johnson Level 48 in. Magnetic Top-Read Alum Level

$27 from $52. Was $15 at my local store (YMMV). Made in the USA. Bought one - seems like a nice, quality standard level. Nothing fancy but feels good.

All the 'Made in the USA' pipe wrenches (including the 18" talked about in the other thread) were/are on sale in-store. Not sure about online.

The ratcheting wrench sets (GearWrench and Crafstman) are on sale.
