Bring the lathe with you when you come to Florida. I can set it up in my shop and show you a couple of things. :)

Do you think I can bring that as a carry on bag?

Dream on Shorty, you'll just have to come up here to use it.

And thank you Andy. You have found a spot on "the wall"

Rod, this is the ester I went with. It's a midtronics. It tests battery, charging system and starter. It seems to be a pretty nice little unit.

I do like the printout feature as it's something you can give to the customer and it spells it out for them. No fancy technical jargon.

Nice one. I still haven't had a chance to learn any more about the conductance testing process yet.

Does that say battery life 65 months on the printout? That seems too old :dunno:

Cheers GB.

So I got the chance to meet another one of the GJ members today. Just wanted to say, it was a real pleasure to meet you Walrus. I am very impressed with the few things you showed me in the short visit we had. That old Bombardier snow crawler was a pleasure to see. I've never even heard of or seen one before you posted about in your thread.

And after Tinker Rick and I got back from the visit, I found this in the back of my truck. I'm not sure how that got there?:dunno: But if you had anything to do with it Walrus, Thank you. I have a place for it.

I better hurry up and get my other projects done so I can put my care package together before you run out of wall space.

First a shout out to Billy from Texas. Thanks for the plate 53PontiacSD.

20161112_155408.jpg

Yesterday(for the first time in 4 weeks) my back wasn't in excruciating pain and was able to actually do something. So I finished putting the lathe together.

And to answer your question Andy, yes I've got my lathe turning. But it now needs to be trued before I can actually use it. I hope I can do a little cleaning today. The shop is a mess. But I also have to finish up a couple of outside projects as we a running out of good weather fast.

Thanks for stopping by guys. I had a big learning experience in the last couple of weeks. I took on an engine swap in a 2002 Envoy. 4.2L I've seen some crazy $hit done with vehicles over the years, but this one might take first place. The c/v shafts actually pass through the oil pan.

20161107_122440.jpg

Yep, that's the transfer case laying next to the pan. It makes for an interesting engine swap. The tolerance is so close that the shop manual tells you to remove and leave out the oil drain plug while removing the motor. And after doing so, I understand why.

A better view of the pan and transfer.

20161107_122252_002.jpg

Anyway, I won't make the mistake of underestimating that job again.

The marvels of modern engineering! Don't you just love engineers?

Don't be too concerned about underbidding the job, think of all the education you're getting:lol_hitti

Back when I was a contractor, when we would get a contract award the guy that bid the job would typically wander through the office wild eyed saying ":willy_nilWhat did I miss?:willy_nil What did I miss?:willy_nil"

Well another addition arrived today for the Wall of Fame. This one made it all the from Ohio. Member JC23 has joined the ranks of members on the wall. I've still got a ton of space that I'd like to fill with plates or bottle caps or whatever you would send to add to it. Anyone interested please send me a PM.

20161118_120354.jpg

Thanks JC23. You're still one of the best "pin"heads I know.

Gotta love engineers... there's been few times I wanted to have a talk with them. [emoji35]

If it's any consolation, I am an engineer and I have had the opportunity have have called them idiots to their face. In between profanities. And, no, it didn't help, but made me feel better:bounce:

Thanks guys. One of my customers (no longer with us) was an engineer and told me we were pointing our fingers at the wrong people. It was in fact the pencil pushers that were responsible for all the lousy mechanical designs as the engineers had to follow their specs on how to make it work. ie: make it fit and weigh (x,Y,z) Now come up with a plan. So I'm letting them off the hook.

Shorty, what about this Gulf thing you speak of????

Maybe OT, but at work our mantra is "Never let an accountant into engineering."

Hi Dan
I just joined this crazy gang by reading your thread today.
I like the idea you have.
The GJ wall of fame and I'll look around here for something to send out.

I love road trips and try to go on them often.
Your logan lathe looks just like the one I got a few months ago (and we paid the same price)
I enjoyed all of the conversations you have going on here and plan to stay up to date now
Thanks for sharing

Don
P.S. I love the shell sign

No accountants in engineering:lol_hitti

They still run the companies

Dan: Your friend was mostly right, lots of constraints make for some weird designs, like the drive shaft through the oil pan. But engineers have a well deserved reputation. My problem was always someone pushing a design with obvious flaws, then trying to bluff that since you don't have their education you just don't understand. For a lot of my life I was a registered engineer incognito: I was working in management and many engineers i came across had no idea I had was an engineer, and a competent on eat that. I always tried to help young guys come along and learn how to be real engineers, not just degreed engineers. Occasionally however I would have to give the a good technical slap to get them up to speed. Nothing infuriates me more than elitism, and ignoring the desires of the customer you are designing for. Maybe you can tell you hit one of my pet peeves!

My son observed the weather is colder likely because of the absence of hot air from the election.

Saw this at the swap meet I'm at this weekend. $550 for a $300 pump. I'll drive by and see if it is still here.

The Gulf thing was in reference to 1/2 Cups comment about a Shell pump.

P.s. If GM and Chrysler could do it on 70's cars, you would think Ford engineers could also make it where the oil didn't pour on the cross member. :headscrat

Hey Dan, I just caught up on the last few pages - nice lathe and Shell sign.

As for the shaft through the oil pan...:willy_nil
I thought our Mitsubishi V6 was bad enough, where you have to remove the intake manifold to change plugs (or replace the rocker cover gasket, as I had to recently).

Very little thought is given to design to make maintenance easy these days.

Cheers.

Well thank you all for your comments and taking the time to check in here. I should try and post a few more things that do happen around here but as I said way back in the beginning, I think most of it would be rather boring.

Don, I'm honored to have you here and would be humbled if you ever stopped by to meet me. I'm just a good ole boy that has worked hard for what I've come to have. Please PM me for my address if you want to send something for the WOF.

Shorty, if that pump is available please tell me. Gerard and Craig have my #. It might be over priced but I think I'd like to have it. I'm sure there'll be enough room to include it when I come get Gerard's WOC.

If people can look in on my "little jobs" place, well, they'll love what you do.

And yes, I'm still looking!

Lyndon, a lot of my enjoyment comes from the way you write and tell your story. You have a flare that makes the "little jobs" very interesting. I always look to see if you have any new posts each day as your animation makes me laugh. I've even tried stealing some of your technique to try and be more interesting with my posts, but I don't have your natural talent. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a grand week ahead of you (with a little less stress)
