They are pretty sturdy. Made of 18 gauge steel and all welded construction. I have an engine block sitting in the bottom of one of the large end cabinets.

New Here:

This particular thread is interesting to me so I thought I would bump it and see if someone has more picks...

Question: How do you make a large shelf with a 45 degree angle arm which is properly supported on the studs on a garage wall that has drywall? I made a shelf out of 2" x 4" and 3/4 " plywood which crashed down after hanging for 1 hour.

Thanks.

David:lol_hitti

Hi David,
I think you are referring to a French cleat. Here is a link for you:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/how-to-plans/how-to/g2340/how-to-build-a-french-cleat-shelf/

Using this technique allows you to secure to the studs with the flexibility to move your shelf to any position.

Where did you source the trim around the doors and latches?
They look great!

I have a steel vertical quad locker that I got for free... like the one's we had in high school. It's ideal for hanging ratchet straps, welding helmets, etc.

For ratchet straps... the ratchet part at the top on any of the locker coat hooks, and then rolling up the straps and sitting them underneath the ratchets.

Thanks! I had some C channel shape material bent up for the doors then the door frames its a Z shape, pretty simple design got the idea from a cabinet guy down south.. Mitre an cut your frames , tack them on back side, adhesive back side install in opening. Doors 7/8" pink board insulation as filler, aluminum skin on both sides, i think i used some type cardboard to fill space up even tighter, then install C channel on edges an rivet in place on back sides.. Its time consuming mitring all angles etc have to use a good saw blade.. Not sure if i would do it all again for the time it takes etc but when i saw what guys wanted for custom race/sled trailers 1000 per linear foot I said screw that an fired up the tig.. The garage outfitter places prices were crazy too 15 grand for same amount of footage real nice stuff though.. Now I see alot of china metal cabinets around really cheap prices not sure of quality ? Heres my sled trailer,,did cabinets , furnace, ducts and drying racks etc as well

I built these out of 3/4 inch ply wood, the face frames are also 3/4 inch ply. The doors are 1/2 inch melamine. The bench top is 3/4 inch melamine on top of 2x12s lying flat.

Lots of great inspiration in all these designs and layouts. I was given the go ahead to take about 4 tall lateral file cabinets from my work... anyone do anything unique on the inside of those lateral ones?

I don't get many after photos. Selling on the internet it seems those who had good experiences don't normally comment. I can see the point, you search for the best price hoping the company made a pricing mistake, never expecting to purchase from that supplier again.

Here's what I received from a recent customer.

"The pictures go along from chaos in the garage to it being complete. After moving, I haven’t been able to put my truck in the garage. It’s bad when you have a 4-car garage half full of boxes.

Last night is the first time I’ve had my truck in a garage in almost a year. I still have to organize some, but the cabinets are fantastic. You are welcome to use any of the pictures and let me know if there is anything specific you’d like me to provide.

Thanks again."

Before and after pictures. Customer went with the white pro 3.0 series of NewAge cabinets. The doors and drawers are platinum and the cabinet boxes and interiors are white. He wrapped the corner with cabinets leaving space for under the worktop storage and stools.

Two lockers 3 wall cabinets a corner wall cabinet 1 tool cabinet and one multi-use base cabinet. A 84" and 56" bamboo worktop and a 24" corner worktop. You're looking at about 2500 bucks worth of cabinets total.

Here's some freebies I got when Sandvik Coromant let us pick whatever we wanted before they demo'd the old building:

I am way to broke for the high end cabinets here so I took some old kitchen cabinets that
were being thrown out by a customer and took the good hardwood faces and doors, built my own boxes out of 3/4 plywood, installed the faces and painted them with oops paint.
This gave me 16 inch deep upper cabinets instead of 12 inch, and by mounting the faces
of the old lower cabinet upside down I was able to put a drawer on the bottom. For my use it has worked out well, also put up some open shelves down one wall that are 16 inches deep, seems to be the sweet spot for me to store things without losing things in the back. kept all of this high enough to walk under to keep floor space open.

Here are a few pics of the drawers I made next to the freezer. Also the handles I made from large washers, these had to be inset so the upper sliding doors could pass by each other.
Cheers

Not complete yet, but 2x4 frames with primed 1x4 faceframes. These will have doors both upper and lower, just have not decided on my material as of yet. Picked up a 2 post lift so adding a sub electrical panel in the garage aswell as running power for lift, welder, air compressor and adding lights and outlets have taken away from the cabinet building.

I still need to trim about 5" off the face of the butcher block counter top, and I will use the cutoff piece as a backsplash.

three HF 44" boxes cost me net $567 after selling the 3 old Craftsman boxes I had.
Upper cabinets are 40" tall and the whole lot was $400 at Habitat ReStore. They have three shelves inside and soft-close hinges.

Of course everything still needs to be painted!

Nice set ups. :) Scott it looks like the current colors match the sweet truck in your avatar.

Here is the lower cabinet / bench I added to the other side. I added some big receivers to mount tools. Also on this one I installed a swing up slide back door so the shop vac can roll under. I would really like to add a vac hose reel too, but have not figured that out yet.

Cheers

My garage has been changing, evolving, every day. If you're quick enough you can scoop up some pretty good freebee's off craigslist.

The lockers came from a trendy young lady that was moving to a smaller apartment. She had started stripping paint and then just painted over what was left. The lockers are heavy duty Lyon products. I've worked for the federal government for a while and that's the brand you find most of the time. I replaced all the bolts that were left with new machine bolts with nylock nuts.

The storage shelving is from the same maker as the one's we had at work. They come from the 30's or 40's I think. Anyways nice and thick, I re-used the original bolts where you could see them. Slotted steel with square nuts. The guy had two when I called, only one was left when I got there. The lady who bought the house said the previous owner worked for the same company that I had. Guess he brought some extra racks home. He also had a welding bench in the basement with a 1/4 thick steel top. The new owners are keeping that.

This place is looking more like a fifties leftover's industrial garage. Free range and artisanal.

I like the metal SIMPLICITY sewing pattern cabinets. The quality is about SnapOn midrange. I have eight of these four drawer cabinets in use. I found the last three on Craigslist, this summer, and paid $30 each. I bought a five drawer at a rural second-hand store for $50.
The drawers are sturdy and have roller slides. The approximate sizes are 30"X30"footprint and 36 inches tall for the smaller cabinets. the larger cabinets are 36" wide and the same height. My only five drawer is 30" square and 50" tall. Each drawer will easily handle 100 pounds.
I put 4 quality casters under four of the cabinets. I repainted on cabinet in Tremclad Fire Red.
The drawer divider are easily removed.

Made these a couple of years ago out of Unistrut, 12 gauge sheet metal, and 1/2” hdpe sheets.
Approx 8’ tall x 8’ wide x 32” deep. Each shelf has a 200# load limit and Has full slide out. The top also has a storage platform for cables, tires, or what ever.
