I have bought lots of tools over the year. No great deals.
But the find I like the most this year is this Aladdin nickle plated brass kerosene lamp that had been electrified with a original Aladdin chimney for $5! The shade and support are long gone but this is still a neat table lamp.

LAST CALL !

With just under an hour left in the new year (EST), this is your last chance to get your posts in before the new year starts.

C'mon, I know that someone out there is holding out. Let's see it.

Just a couple more shots from October/ November auction items to help push farther over the record, pacific time here.

I thought the 3 orange jacks from 3 different places in one month was sorta a trifecta.

Welding table in its side has a bullet vise that's now my biggest at 5 and my first with pipe jaws.

Vintage craftsman DP in the back of truck bed. That was a fun sale. A near new Stihl saw too.

Did someone say this was a sickness?

No Garage or Esatate sales today. Hit up the small flea market. Only a couple booths open. Got a tractor seat and a cheapo 1/2" ratchet for $5. Happy New Yers everyone!

Hit the local flea yesterday and scrounged up a few DOE's and an adjustable.

The Dowidat is a 7/8 and 15/16.

Geodore 32/27.

Hazet 20/22.

Fiat 24/27. Saw a few of these; must be from a factory tool kit.

Stahlwille Stabil 1 36/41. The 36 has been ground on a bit.

The adjustable is a Zerem. That's a new one for me. Seems like a quality wrench.

Happy New year all! And thanks to Jake for a great job hosting last year's thread, and to 3Bay for hosting the 2017 GS thread!

Now, to TRY to find a sale (I can't recall a winter dry spell like this...)

Congrats on breaking the record guys. we still have one milestone that seems to elude us: the "one page a day average" is still a tiny bit short. Every year I think (about August) "maybe this year" and every year the year end slow down gets us.

CB: that CL 910 is a GREAT find! there is a sliding adjuster for tension on the bottom arm that is the secret to this type of one handed grip. I have two pair. One I bought new, and once I got the thing to grip tight I was sold!

Their only weak point in my opinion is the little plastic grip. Its easily broken. I broke mine, and re-glued it, then wrapped it in fine steel wire, and painted over that with nail polish to keep the wire in place. Its been "repainted" once after twenty years of use. so it worked out well.

ps: Are we doing the new start at midnight? and if so, Eastern or Left coast Midnight?

Outlaw, thanks for the info. I was playing with the slide adjuster, I think this will be a well used plier in my shop, or maybe it ends up in my tool bag. Pretty slick engineering.

This is what I've come to like about this thread, finding/ reading about these new tools I've never heard of. The search continues.

Tell me more about the Stihl - what model number? I have a bit of a Stihl chainsaw addiction.

It was a 290 farm boss. It's good to be the boss. I gave it to my older son, it auctioned for $120.

I have the MS260 pro with 3/8 chain. I don't know how you'd beat that saw. It's worlds ahead of my first saw, an 021.

The auctioneer was starting everything high, and then when he came down to get bids, you were mostly bidding against the assistants that were holding the items up. One of them ended up winning about a third of the lots. Why bother having an auction if the employees are going to buy everything anyway. Isn't that a conflict of interest ? :tantrum2: :fawk:

No conflict of interest - the auctioneer's duty is to get the highest price for the client. Doesn't matter who placed the bid, it's higher than the previous bid, so the client makes more.

Now, whether it's legal is another question, and auction laws vary by state and/or locality. Auctioneer could always be proxy bidding for someone off site.

It just occurred to me - the auctioneer might also be the owner of the goods. So, his higher bid just cancels the previous one. If he thinks it's a bad night, he can then resell it later. Again, the client's interests are served.

"shill" bidding comes to mind.

Drove this home on Christmas Eve, got it from my neighbor. It needs some TLC, but it runs, drives, and stops. First order of business is replacing the gas tank. It's a 1987 3/4 ton with an older Meyer unit with power angle.

BFBOB - I attend many auctions and most allow for what is called absentee bidding by people who write down the item and what maximum amount they will go to. The auction house then will have their employees bid for said individual. I would assume that is what was occurring.

Not at the auction that started this conversation. It was stated that there were no phone, Internet, or proxy bids allowed. Only in person bids would be accepted.

Yeah... shill bidding bad. But... it's kind of a squishy term. If I (the owner of the item being auctioned) were to, say, enlist a friend to bid up the price, yeah, that's just a notch shy of strongarm robbery. If the auctioneer does it, he's working for my interests just like he's supposed to.
Splitting hairs to be sure.
I may have to look up some laws. You can look at the Revised Statutes of Missouri online, but the one or two times I've tried to look up something specific, it's been an exercise in frustration.

All that said, I was sure pissed off when I was hit by a shill bidder on evilBay. He chipped away, posting DOZENS of bids until he found my maximum, then retracted his last bid. I reported to fleaBay, but didn't even get a yawn.

Jakemac, you may have better luck than I did with eBay reporting the auctioneer to the state authorities. In Missouri, at least, they have to be licensed and there are laws regarding what they can, must, and can not do. Don't know how vigorously they would be investigated, but there is a mechanism.

Not worth my time. I just won't go to any more of that companies auctions and save myself the frustration.

In post #7175 here, I mentioned a find at the end of Dec. It was at the local Habitat for Humanity. I got a Craftsman 1/4" shank 8 amp router, 315.175040 for $2. It was priced at $19.99, but when I plugged it in, no-go. So, I know the floor managers, I asked one of them, "what are you going to sell this to me for, ___ (another floor manager) plugged it in and it doesn't work." He told me $5, I countered, "hey not working! I'll give you $2!" He took it.

When I got home, I set it aside until I could get to it. Today 1/2/17, I opened it up. I was hoping for something like a bad switch, and praying it wasn't a toasted armature, or field coils. I took a whiff to see if it had that acrid, 'cooked' odor, in the store, no-such odor. So, I figured, $2 is like a lotto ticket, if it's something I can fix cheaply, I get a cheap tool, if not, I am not out $$$.

Off came the switch cover. Connections OK, action OK, next!

I removed the top cap, and what I found was one of the brush holders had popped-out of the plastic receptacle. I wire-brushed the metal brush holder, which works by contact w/the metal underneath, re-assembled the top cap, which has arms to hold the brush ***'y in place, and plugged it in. Success! The second picture shows one of the commutator brush holders dislodged and the one on the opposite side is removed, for comparison. A functional 8 amp router and a nice 1" quarter-round carbide roller bearing bit for $2! A good way to end the prior year, and to start this one. Happy new year.

Telling them, I passed on a metal clamp like that in the right of your picture. It was well made steel -any idea what those clamps are used for?
