Hi Guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm about to get a shed built at my property in Brisbane QLD Australia. I've been doing a lot of reading about concrete floor coatings and other great workshop storage ideas on this forum.

Now it's time to post up my shed plans and show you guys what I'm doing.

Property is a 900 sq meter block that has its back fence directly onto a train line. The house is at the road side of the block leaving a fairly big area for me to build. There's a 3x3m garden shed in one corner of the yard just in front of a very large tree.

The new shed build also includes concrete work around the house and a new driveway to the left side of the house running out the back to the shed.

I also have had to modify the eaves of the carport on the side of the house so that taller vehicles can squeeze down the back.

I've done up plans overlaying a Google Earth image so I can get the positioning right.

The purpose of the shed is for a number of purposes. I am a big car nut so I'm putting in a 2 post hoist in one of the bays, and I also run my own business so I will need room for storage of products I sell on pallet racking.

This is the diagram showing my position of the shed plus where I will be running the electrical conduit and water drainage. Plus it shows the potential location of a water tank.

The light grey areas are where the new concrete will be poured.

So far I've had the attached carport eaves modified so it allows for taller vehicles down the side. Here's some photos.

Removing the large brick columns and exposing the eaves.

Now, going back to the plan diagram, I'm curious to know what you guys think about the water drainage. Do you think I'm going overboard with drainage?

The light blue lines I'm planning on running trench drains along the front of the roller doors of the shed, and across the driveway before it meets the house.

The land isn't very steep though so I'm not sure if it's overkill?

Moving on to the shed design. Here's a render of what the shed will look like:

The colours I'm going with are:

Walls: Colorbond Surf Mist
Doors: Colorbond Slate Grey
Gutters: Colorbond Wallaby

Here's the colour cards for the 3 colours above:

Welcome Steve_mc0.
I don't think you're going overboard with the storm water. Just look at all this weird weather we are getting. The sooner the water leaves your property the better. That's my thought anyway.

Steve_mc0. firstly g'day and welcome to the GJ, great to have another Aussie on board..

Your plans look great and like the colour combo, it should come up a treat.

I am with Aaron on that score, overkill is not an issue..

Looking forward to following your progress..

Cheers

This was my exact thoughts also. I've got a plumber coming over this afternoon to give his opinion on the build also. Will update the thread with his thoughts.

The biggest problem is that to get council approval I'll need to do the big 40m run of drainage pipe from the shed down to the road front.

Welcome mate!

Drainage setup looks good!

:) if possible run it in 100mm DWV not 90mm Stormwater, its alot better quality pipe
Yep 100mm DWV for sure

I've spoken to a plumber this afternoon and he thought I was going a bit overboard.

I'm going to run the channel drain across the front of the shed and go all the way to the fence with it.

He was confident the water would never run toward the house.

New updated diagram coming soon.

Welcome, 2nd the 100mm pipe. Dont forget to insert a couple of inlets so you can clean out the pipe every couple of years. Just a T piece with a screw on cap. The water tank is to meet your BASICs but will be good for washing the cars.

Have updated the diagram to show the following:

  • New water tank location
  • Additional 1.5 or 2m of concrete (not sure yet) at rear of shed
  • Stormwater pipe location - have a Tee off to the edge of concrete at house for future use
  • 1 long trench drain across front of shed
  • 2x runs of 40mm conduit - one to shed and one to edge of concrete for future use
  • 1x 25mm run of data conduit from corner of house to shed

Steve_mc0 , are you going to have enough concrete apron at the front of the shed to turn in and out??

Regards
I've currently planned for a 3m apron at the front of the shed for turn in.

The first two bays on the left will be used most regularly for parking and the next on the right will be used solely for hoist use.

Do you think a 3m apron will be enough?

S, are you going to put some of those castle blocks that the grass grows thru in addition to the apron?
I would be looking at 6m apron if its in the budget.
I'd happily do more apron but 6m seems pretty excessive - there'd only be a meter or so of grass before the house!

Might as well concrete the lot.

Now I'm not sure if I'm gonna kick myself later for not putting more in front of the shed.

What I would do is get some marker spray paint and some pegs then mark the shed and apron out and give it a trial run with your car to see if it works.

try this for an idea, you can do it as the budget allows.
drive blocks.jpg
This way you can have your grass and a surface that will support a vehicle when wet.
Some one else used the plastic grid here and I think they are happy with it. There are lots of options.

looking forward to the build mate! I'd get as much drainage as you can get, considering half of Brisbane was underwater not 5 years ago!!

Have you put your application through council yet? I thought my shed was going to be a easy job, It took 1 and a half years to get council approval here in Sydney, and cost me more in red tape and reports than the actual cost of the shed!!

Im only looking for concreters now!

Good luck, i wish i could have gone that big on my block.

The shed mob have said the council approval should be done by next week. I'll be harassing them soon.

I can't wait for it to be done!

Re: Steve's Aussie Shed/Workshop Build 12mx7m & 3.6m High!

3x 3.2m bays with 3m x 3m doors

See the 2nd post in this thread for a 3d render of what it'll look like

Yeah looks good but I think it may be a bit tight with only 3m apron to get in and out, 1/2 cup had a good suggestion with the peg out.

Is it 3.6m to eaves or ridge?

3.6 to eaves, will be 4.9 or something to the peak.

I did a measure up this afternoon with a mate of mine and some marking paint. I think instead of doing an extra couple of meters on the apron, I'm going to make an additional triangle on the driveway.

Something like this:

I took a photo this morning so I could give you guys an idea of the scale of the yard and where the shed was going to go.

attachment.php

I then grabbed my 3d render and overlayed it with photo and drew in the concrete roughly where it will go.

attachment.php

I'm pretty pleased with how it's going to look. I think I'll paint up the zinc garden shed to match once it's all done.

S, check with your sparky, down here they want 50mm conduit for mains.
Also don't for get to run a 25mm blue line for water from your water tank back to the laundry so you can get credits for using rainwater.

My sparky thinks 40mm is way overkill and told me to just run 32mm for money savings. I ignored him and went for the 40mm.

He's the one ordering the conduit through his trade account so i think I'm ok.

As for laundry water supply I think I'll just install another tank on the side of the house for that if I want it.

I'll be using this tank for the shed water supply and washing cars etc.

What size sub mains are you running??

Regards
Not sure at this point.

Need enough power for hoist, mig welder, shop lights, plasma cutter, mitre saw, water pump on tank, air compressor.

Usual car work and fabrication tools.

Not running 3 phase but will need a few 15A sockets around

Will have a pc in the shed also.

The bigger the better, but at the end of the day you can only run a few things at a time.

A 10mm 2 should do it nicely.

Hey, find out what size hoist motor ,what size MIG and what size compressor motors you want. My hoist is 20 amp, my mig is 15 amp and constantly in that upper range, and the compressor is big so its 15 amp as well. Just thinking out loud.

Hoist - Roughly 2.5HP motor - I'd say it'll be around 20amp draw.
Welder - Inverter Unimig 200a - At most it'll be 15amp draw.
Compressor - 3hp motor 50L tank 2200watt - around 9amp draw.
Plasma Cutter - 20amp output - will be pretty minor draw probably 5amps or so at most.
Shop Flood Lights - 3.35amp each x2 (only at startup)

The big things I can see all kicking over at the same time POSSIBLY are:

Hoist 20A + Compressor 9A + Lights 7A

So at the most around 40amp draw total at any one time. And even then, fairly unlikely to reach that because the lights won't be being powered on at the same time as the hoist is running etc.

I'm pretty sure I'll be fine with 2x runs of 40mm conduit to the shed. Sizing the wiring can be a future problem.
