Just called about this crummy Craftsman bench. Why you might ask? See the picture labelled "Craftsman Bench - 3".

Too late again. $55 and just over an hours drive from here. UGH !

Man that really blows.---They don't pop up often but they do pop up.---That really was a steal on all accounts.---But you will snag one.---Word of advise when you go to pick one up, inspect it close at the slide support.---It's shaped like channel iron but it's cast, meaning it is a gutted out appendage of cast that is a very weak spot right at the Static base.---I've got 2 Slide-sets and one has the support completely broke off and gone.---Failed to see it when purchasing, and then I found out why it was so cheap.---The other is in excellent condition because I knew what to look for.---A lot of them are just cracked, so you really have to look close for the hair-line fracture.---Shame that the support has to be gutted, but if it wasn't, it wouldn't slide or quick-set---Good luck/hunting.

Well, now that the cat is out of the bag ....

I warned you all that I did a bad thing.
I've been wanting a baby Reed for a long time, but every one that I bid on was lost to another bidder who wanted it more and had deeper pockets than I did. Not that I have the money now, but I was able to scrape it together for this one and pounced before someone else could grab another one from me again.

The bad, bad part is that I should be saving the money for bills at the end of the month, but I'll figure that out when the time comes. I always do. I just had one of those "must have it now" moments.

The add dated it as 1960's, but they got it wrong. It has the early bulbous nose and the 1912 and 1914 patent dates. I'm thinking its late 1920's to mid-1930's, maybe a little later. :dunno:

The vise looks ugly, but seems to be in decent shape for its age under the lousy paint job. I'll know better when it shows up next week. It's supposed to ship today. I think it will clean up ok with some elbow grease.

I'd prefer a swivel model, but I'm still excited about this one. :bounce:

The paint makes it look miserable, but overall looks in good shape and should clean up nicely. I think you did really good, maybe even you **** good. (It was $100, right?)

$115 w/shipping.
As a cheap *******, I kind of had a hard time wrapping my head around spending so much for such a small vise. But after losing out on 4 or 5 of these over the years (at much higher prices), and never seeing one available in the wild, I held my nose and clicked the BIN button before someone with more courage beat me to it (again).

There's still a little voice in the back of my head that's questioning my sanity, but the nut job that lives in the frontal lobe is currently beating him senseless with a wet noodle until he cries uncle. :lol_hitti

Re: Another 7" Joins the Fold

Co-worker of mine made my week the other night. Came into my trailer with a crate at the end of shift. I asked if we received a delivery. Got a smile and a 'No, it's kind of a late Christmas present for you'. Hand made White Oak vise. Oil finish. 7-3/8" jaws. Opens 5". 1-3/8" acme screw. Leather faced jaws to protect knife blades etc. What a guy...!
Okay, so I scrolled from the bottom up, and I was thinking the wooden vise was cool. Then I scrolled further up and saw the custom built crate for it and thought it was super cool. Then I got to the top picture and saw that the cover for the crate was cut out from a Barbie Dream House box, and now it's back to just cool.

Michelin: your big vise looks European and like a FPU Polish Bison or Leinen, but your static jaw is bolted down and their's is the moving part. have you taken if off the stand to weigh it yet? any writing or #'s on it anywhere? i'm guessing the static needs to be bolted more at the end of the stand to allow dynamic to move correctly or are my eyes deceiving me?

CRETE: you don't post often, but you sure do post some great stuff when you do. i think your wood vise is JUST COOL. do you still have the Burgundy Parker 978 sitting in your living room? have any more pictures of it?

find any more BIG UNS lateley or have you started to look for the little ones?

thanks for posting that wood vise and did you say it's a kit or did your friend make all the parts to give you to put it together?

oh, please. DO go on and on....

That's what's fun about it. Your free haul carries as much weight as the Wilton Magnet, The Vise(s) Mahal, and the $20 400lb vise. It's all good.

Ok i'll play, a like new Cub Cadet 1430 tractor with utility trailer. Maybe 100 hours on it. Solid old Cub. 2 Honda push mowers (like new), 2 Husqvarna 4 stroke weed trimmers, almost new Pulan chainsaw, a 8 HP Craftsman chipper/shredder, a new in box 5500 watt generator, a bunch of various axes and saws, a rack of various nuts and bolts, a solid old Craftsman double bay tool box full of decent tools, a bunch of fishing tackle and gear. a 1970 7.5 HP Johnson outboard (like new) with original manual and a test stand. a real nice new outdoor fireplace also. a older Craftsman big table saw, And some other little stuff. We did a bunch of work cleaning the house and this was my payment. The guy died in the house and the family told us to get it all gone. Wanted nothing to do with his stuff. House needed to be burned down. Only safe way to clean it. Lol. So thats the major score of the century for me. All the stuff got dived up between my brother and I.

MrrooG8, all that good stuff and the man didn't have one single vise or anvil.---That's probably the reason he passed.---Lack of a hobby/vice.:dunno:

Oh yeah there were 3 vises. I posted them in my original post a few pages back. The dude passed because of his combination of hard liqueur, pills and fast food diet. His heart exploded like a water balloon.

Yes, the Big Parker is still with the herd.

Kinda wanted one from out east a month or so ago, but at least it went to another forum member.

My friend cut and planed the pieces out of an actual dry white oak log and built and finished it as a gift for me.:)

Y'all are enablers.. I've been watching this vise for a couple days, something kept me interested.. After a little searching, there was a quick thread that Jack vines started when he picked one up, and it looks like Zoomie has one too.. Anyways, picked it up today for $53 [emoji106]
Cardinal machine co model 140 speed vise
Its super clean, and looks like it was very lightly used

72highboy,

I love those! Here's my 140 (I guess I should dust off the desk)

I just recently picked up a 45-M 4.5" as well. Still need to spruce it up.

If you ever sell, I'll buy.

Yes please make a video. I think it would be extremely interesting since there is very little info about the complete setup for one

I cant tell if you're being sarcastic or not :(
No, it was really packed well, I was impressed and told the seller what a good job they did (for just a regular cardboard box w/no wood reinforcement) but I got the impression it was sold from a seller that sells vises on a regular basis and knew what they were doing, IE maybe someone from this forum...
