1935 Gas Station Resurrection

On your Wayne 505 pumps the Phillip 66 pump has a lighted glass insert in the top, Do you plan to cut a glass insert in the older Wayne 505 pump to match the newer one? Or just leave them as they are, Just curios...I have a Wayne 505 pump too and I don't want to buy a new top for it just to get the lighted glass panel, and I was wondering if you were going to cut yours to match and how you were going to cut it?

The way the pumps are going to be positioned in front of the building you'll only be able to see one side of the pump from the street. So I'm going to put the panels with the ad glass on the front of each pump and put the blanks on the back. Haven't spent a ton of time looking, but from what I've seen I can get new blank ad glass for the 505, but none with Sinclair already on it so I'll probably have to have some decals made. One for Sinclair HC and the other for Sinclair Power X.

I haven't been on GJ or your thread in a while. Last page I read before tonight was number 19. Wowser, everything looks great! I love the restroom err office. What size is that door? Also I love all the vintage petrolina, garage shop collectibles.

Question, do you know where the old Ford pick up was born from a final assembly standpoint? The reason I ask is that many of the assembly plants where these vehicles were once assembled are disappearing quickly. I think the history of them and the vehicles that they once produced is something that needs to be remembered. The Grave Yard Carz show is now starting to call out where all the cars they are restoring were once manufactured. That is neat thing since someone probably has a relative, friend, or acquaintance that might have worked there.

Heck fire they maybe someone on the forum here that knows someone who worked in the plant where your truck and the old Galaxy were assembled.

The door is a standard 24" wide. Kinda hard to find one in stock anyplace, when you do your choices will be very limited. I think this was the only style Menards had in a 24" door.

The F100 was built in the Kansas City plant (which is still building F150's today) The Econoline Pickup was built in the Lorain Ohio plant (that plant is long gone) the Galaxie was built in Norfolk Virginia. (unsure of the status of that plant) The pair of 64 Fairlanes (one 2 dr sedan and 1 4dr parts car) I have were also built in Kansas City.

Took some time to organize the home shop this morning and clean out the paint room since I'm going to be painting a couple gas pumps in the very near future. Weird how much room you have when you take all the shop equipment out.





I've been unsuccessful in finding a good 30" porcelain Sinclair HC sign so in the mean time I came across a guy out of Michigan that made me a new one. Its single sided made out of an aluminum composite panel. Very sturdy, yet doesn't weigh a ton. The graphics are UV protected and he assured me the sign would last a good ten years or more outside. I think its a pretty nice sign for 70 bucks plus shipping. It is going to be mounted above the arched door that looks into the station office. I think it'll look cool at night lit up by the old barn light which will be right above it.



I'm off to spend my afternoon media blasting some gas pump parts. Have a good weekend.

The Ford Norfolk Assembly Plant closed in June,2007. The Lorain Assembly Plant stopped producing T'Bird's and Cougars on September, 1997. The Lorain plant continued to assemble Econoline vans until 2005 when the plant was completely closed.

Yeah I was on their website over the weekend. Looks like they will be getting about 400 bucks from me for everything I need.

Weather has been **** and haven't been able to work outside so I got some work done on the pumps. Stripping to bare, welding up unneeded screw holes and fixing a few dents...pretty much like building an old car.



I media blasted all the smaller parts in my blast cabinet then went over them with a 3m bristle disc on an angle grinder



After that I will finish them off with 80 grit on a da. You could prime right after the bristle disc, but by going over the parts with a da it will show any small low spots that need addressed.



The small dark spots are low areas that need fixed. You can see how easy it is to see them by doing it this way

I'm there usually at least one day. Typically Saturday. If I take anything in this year it probably would be the wagon.

I've had pretty good luck with Ingersoll Rand's. I think the majority of all my air tools are IR's. The bristle discs are part of the Roloc brand of products.

Auction season is in full swing and I was able to find a few good items at an estate sale Saturday. A couple of the highlights were an old mechanics work coat, a couple battery service totes and a pretty cool old 2qt oil fill can. Also got a gas pump nozzle I needed so both my pumps will have matching nozzles.





Worked a bit on the station office this afternoon. Put up a couple shelves along the ceiling. With them up I was able to finally hang the Auto-Lite poster amongst a few other items.

Nice score! You need to keep an eye out for the old Goodyear blimp inflatables. The silver ones. Those blimps go back to the early 1960s so it's a little newer than your desired garage time period, but not too much.

Are you ready to start fending off the people that drive by and see all those signs that say oil changes, brake repair, and so on, and then stop in, thinking you just opened a new auto repair shop?. I'd be willing to bet it will be more than one.

No, not really. They will be bolted down to the concrete. To access the nuts you would have to unlock the door, then remove the lower doors. The building is on the main east-west road through town in the heart of downtown. Anything shady I'm confident would get noticed. The entire building is under video surveillance also.

I'm more looking forward to somebody pulling in trying to buy 30 cent gas Its small town Iowa and most know what is going on whether its their business or not. People stopping by to BS will probably be more of an issue than anything. Nights I really need to get something done the doors will have to stay shut.

While I'm one here, I'll show a couple things I finished up today. First I painted, decaled and hung the map rack. Huge improvement painting it white.






And put down some rock out front along the wall. Hope to get the wall painted soon. I have pressure washed it, so its just a matter of finding a couple warm days with little wind to get it primed and painted.

You could post a few signs to keep the on lookers, and jaw boners out.

" Our gas will get you no where"
" You just entered the Twilight Zone, no service here, mechanic NOT on duty"

Another thing you could do is get a an old gas price sign and put it out front with Regular at .59.9 and Premium at .65.9.

As far as keeping the doors shut when to keep on lookers out. Get some vinyl yellow chain to go across the bay entrance when you have the doors open. You can hang a haz mat sign in the center....that will keep lots of folks out.

I have had people drive up in my drive, and before I had llamas the gate was open to the pasture. I day a crazy old women drove up, went out in my pasture and was driving around . I have some big rocks out there and she hit a few on the bottom of her car. I was running after her and she just kept driving around like she was looking for another way out. She finally went back out the gate she went in. crazy

Yeah both pumps last sold gas at 33 cents, every pic I've seen from the era has been in the 26-32 cent range.

I forgot to mention these pics I bought at the auction. These were taken at the Ford Dealership in Jefferson, Iowa in 1956. i love the fact that the owner and the two mechanics were photographed together in front of the dealership. Shows how different the mindset was back then, especially in a small town dealership. Reminds me a lot of the one I grew up in.

My budget and ambition level is much lower than yours !

My little local town has a really neat closed co-op station, its used just for parking inside I tried to buy it but, the guy that owns it has the only other service station and was afraid I would compete ..tried to assure him it was not going to be used for anything other than my stuff , he still said no ..

and, a town close to me has a more modern Sinclair and I'm told that the dinosaur they have in the ditch is going to have to be moved " hazard" the dot says ..i'll look into it
