Sorry, no updates yet. I was out of town. I still want to pull the flywheel just to make sure that key is ok but my puller is too small and I haven't had a change to borrow a larger one.

Pry bar under the flywheel while you whack the end of the crankshaft once with a hammer. MAKE SURE the nut is flush with the END OF THE CRANK when you do this otherwise you WILL mess up the threads.

I use an air hammer instead. One quick braaaapp and its off.

It looks like the OP went AWOL, but there's some good input (with pics) from a Honda employee on this topic in this thread...

this is a 2 year old thread but the path I would take is to pull the spark plug off and pull it thru a few times. If it kicks back the issue is mechanical or hydraulic. If it doesn't kick back it is spark timing. Also if he did run out of fuel, there would be 2 additional questions.(1) how old is the fuel we just added? Did it come from some neighbor where it sat around a long time and it could burn so slow that it ignites the next incoming charge (2) is the carb still so lean that the mixture burns so slow it ignites the next incoming charge.

My cheap Excell PW finally died after 25 years (RIP). Throughout it's life if I didn't release any water pressure in the pump before starting the engine it would kick back with authority. I just squeezed the trigger on the wand until the water stream slowed to a trickle (supply water pressure) then started the engine. If the engine didn't start after several pulls I would release the pressure again. It won't cost you anything to try it.

That's not the issue here. I always start it with the trigger pulled.

I've got things to investigate now, so I'll try that and report back.

Just noticed I never came back to this thread with a resolution so I'm fixing that now. Indeed it was the valve lash that needed adjusting. They were both significantly out of spec. Now it starts on the first or second pull every time without ever kicking back.

Wouldn't the overunning clutch on the pull start prevent the engine from pulling the rope back in?
+6 on holding the trigger open when starting
You would think so right now I'm getting ready to go to the emergency my 4400 PSI DeWalt Honda pressure washer it pulled so hard it feel like ripping it out of my hand is not the word very aware of releasing the trigger and I did so when I went to start it oh my I think I broke something . I want to know can they be liable

I had the same problem on my 4-stroke, I pulled the carb and cleaned the jets real well.
Still have to relieve the pressure, by pulling the trigger. But it runs great!

Also quit running anything but no ethanol gas.
