Did I tune in to the wrong place? Is this the Food Channel now?

I was looking for the American Autos in Russia channel.:willy_nil

I look, a joker comes in, who's called Andy! :bounce:

Okay, let's talk about an automotive theme.

Timber carrier KAMAZ on the M-53 highway near Krasnoyarsk

IMG_20171212_095635

Finally, last night from 8 to 12, our street was cleaned by a grader, and then a truck with a blade and a brush. It became much easier to ride. But I still think that their strategy to wait for the summer until everything melts itself IDEAL will give a 100% result in the fight against snow.

The joke around here in the central United States is the snow removal plan is called "April". That is, when spring comes the snow will melt. :D

A couple of year ago we had a rough winter, especially north of where I live (I am referring to the upper peninsula of Michigan). One of my favorite pictures was chunks of ice floating in the water just off of the beach Marquette, MI on Memorial Day. This day is the unofficial "first day of summer" and occurs on the last weekend in May.

I have swam in Lake Superior (the large lake that Marquette is located on) in July and August. The water was about about 45F/7C.

In that same area, you can sometimes find snow on the shady side of a hill in June !

Hello for all peoples at this amazing site!

I read others threads 3 years and enjoyed. Thanks for all [emoji481]

At this year I finded interesting thread about Russia, Vladimir have a nice garage and hobby is to repair all around him. :)

Some guys said me that I need to start my own thread about my garage and lives in Siberia (Russia).

So... let's GO :3gears:

First of all i will repost from Volodya's thread

MAP

Entrance of Zheleznogorsk.

Stella with the old name of our city during the Cold War and the coat of arms at the entrance to our city.
Old name is "Krasnoyarsk-26" it's top secret town in taiga. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, our city was not marked on maps. Currently, the city is closed to visitors. To enter the city a pass is required, which is issued by the Federal Security Service (FSB) after verification. The city is surrounded by a fence of barbed wire, entry is through the checkpoint, cars are inspected by security guards. All this provides additional security for residents and for the functioning of strategic enterprises in the nuclear and space area.

We do not feel imprisoned as it may seem from the outside. :D
I like the fact that our city is closed, asocial elements like criminals or homeless people can not just get here.

Photo from january 2013.

The city's coat of arms is a bear tearing the nucleus of an atom

I don't know English well so don't judge me severely :pimpflash

Welcome to the GJ! I'm looking forward to reading more about Russia. I knew a little Greek once.
But he died[emoji38]

My wife has cousins who lived in the Upper Peninsula for many years, and my mother had relatives who lived there as well. I wouldn't begin to compare our Kansas winters to the winters in the UP. You guys are made of hardy stuff. To put this comment back on track of the thread, I always imagined Siberian winters and UP winters to have a lot in common.

Doesn't look too much different from Maine. Log trucks and graders scraping the road are everyday sights here as well.

Here in the metropolitan area of the Chicago suburbs, we have excellent snow removal as we pay plenty of taxes for the luxury.

It is nice having my own property but I am not able to depend on someone else to clear the snow.
I can pay someone or keep my rubles and do it myself!
A lot of us who own property have our own snow moving equipment.
I have a 43 meter driveway in concrete I keep clear...too much to shovel!

So I use a snowblower...

So, for us, we cannot blame someone else for not removing the snow.

Sometimes, it can get pretty deep and no where to put it!

@Stas: How do you dress in the winter time?
Here we don't get less than -15 or -20 degrees Celsius in the daytime. But mostly something like -5 or -10 degrees Celsius.
Could you post some photos?
Dealing with extreme temperature is very difficult.

STAS and others that talk about -30 temps are you talking Celcius or Fahrenheit?

i know both would be cold, but -30 around here in Fahrenheit would have me really acting like MR. HIDE cause i wear long underwear at 32 degrees which is freezing.

speaking of long underware anybody have a favorite cause i'm due to upgrade my batch of Craftsmans i bought a few years ago?

a good term i've learned from others is there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices unless of course you are talking tornados, typhoons, hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes and over 120 degrees.

have a great day all

Bună Bogdan!

By the way, in Russia we have the name Bogdan is found among people. In our school was the teacher of drawing was a name Bogdan.

About winter clothing.

Much depends of the temperature on the streets and what you are going to do. If you work outside or for a long time spend there, I personally wear the pants over them, warm beleieve pants, they are not blown and perfectly retain heat, although very thin. I wear a t-shirt, warm sweater and down jacket. If I work in an office, wearing usually jeans, dressed over pants. The more layers, the warmer, elementary physics :)

Some photos taken in January 2016. I'm with my wife and son walking on the ice on our local lake.

This morning I went to pick up mother from work, because yesterday she suddenly was blown away by the wheel on the car and my wife had to take her to work.

The place where my mom works, I have been told that her firm is called "Information satellite systems named after academician Reshetnev". She works in the division, which is called the "antennas field". Her task is the reception of information from satellites via satellite antennas.
IMG_20171214_091740

In the photo there is a building of a new huge workshop, in which there will be an opportunity to deploy solar panels at satellites in full size. The workshop is still being completed, but work is already underway in it. This unique shop of this size in Russia is the only one. I am glad that the company started to re-develop after the collapse of the USSR.

The height of the building in my opinion about 40-50 meters, a width of about 100 and a length of approximately 500 meters.
In the photo it is located to the left of the Tower crane
IMG_20171214_091713

After that I went to the city hospital to take X-ray photos of my son's legs. Sorry for the quality of the photo on the street it was snowing.
IMG_20171214_092845

Resuscitation car on the porch of the hospital
IMG_20171214_092646

After the hospital, we went to the Parking lot where there was mom's car and checked the wheel, visually it was fine and I decided to take it to the tire mounting shop to check it out in the bath water for air leaks. Checked it out and found that everything is ok, but for reliability we missed rim rims rubber sealant and replaced the ****** as it turned out the problem is an air leak.So this little piece of ******** with price 15 cents may **** your brain and help you to spend 180 rubles for troubleshooting faults.
Sorry for my BAD english! ;)

Car service "Kantat" is named so in honor of the river which flows into the city lake.

Stas,

Welcome to Garage Journal!

I am enjoying your thread very much and your pictures. It is good to see how similar we all are, while enjoying the differences.

Your wife is SUPER to look at. Wow. I had a college roommate who visited Russia after the soviet union fell and he used to tell me of all the places he had travelled, the women in Russia were FAR better looking than anywhere else. I would say that Katya is another proof of that!

I live in Michigan USA, and probably have similar winters but not quite as cold as you. We just had 8" snow last night and it was 1 degree F at my house this morning.

I will subscribe to your thread. Thanks.

I'm enjoying this thread. I love winter and am fascinated by areas of the world with more significant winter weather than we have here.

Do you have any more winter pictures of the forested areas around your city?

Also, my wife would like to visit Vietnam. Do you have more pictures of your trip? Pictures of the surrounding town, the hotel, the beach and the food you ate?

Stas26, Looking at the size of your snow drift at the garage I can now stop complaining about the 8-10 inches I have here to deal with. I do not envy you digging that out!

STAS: your ENGLISH was ok regarding that inexpensive fix on the tire and usually i'd ask some members to change it cause we have a lot of young people reading our threads, but in your case after hours of work to find that was the fix i think it was appropriate.

there sure is a lot of talk about snow on this thread and it looks like Vieux has more at his garage which is also in Russia and just not in Siberia. we only get snow here about a week or two or three a year, but it rains about 9 months a year here in the PNW.

so no special long underwear just layers of pants? i used to have some nice wool pairs, but one of the kids threw it in the dryer and I bet they fit a 5 year old now after i gave them away.

cheers and STAY WARM!!

you mean swear words? I was just enraged by this nonsense, which made me jump with a balloon wrench and a jack in the frost :(

I apologize if I offended someone with my expressions, but in Russia we use them quite often in such cases, it's good that our language is very rich in such words :) I was ready to kill this wheel for it.:lol::lol:

Hi Bob!

Young people often drift on fresh snow, including on the streets, which is very dangerous for others, but more often in parking lots near supermarkets.:3gears:

funny you say swearing is NORMAL cause if you ever go to NEW YORK CITY they might say F' you and mean Hello. i'm guessing your culture got that from us or vise versa, but i'm still hoping the younger generation learns how to speak ENGLISH or RUSSIAN in your case.

hope you don't have any more car issues cause I too hate working on cars in the snow and/or cold.

Hi Voi (is it your real name or nickname?)

About Vietnam (later).

Now a winter time in Zheleznogorsk (in English it's called - "Iron mountains city")

Voi is a nick name. It was the name of our last dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, who was still alive back when I registered for Garage Journal. Before we got him we were looking for African names and came across the name Voi, which as I recall was the name of a town in Rhodesia.

Interestingly enough, Voi also means elephant in Vietnamese.

I just looked up Mui Ne and that is probably a bit farther from Saigon than my wife would like to be. I'm still interested in seeing your pictures and more about your trip if you have the time to post them.

Your pictures of the forested areas around Zheleznogorsk were great. Thank you very much.

I live in an area know as the Black Hills in South Dakota. It is a small mountain range in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. Our peaks are only 5000' to 7000' above sea level (1500 to 2100 meters). Ponderosa Pine is the dominant tree species and in winter it can look very similar to the pictures you just posted.

The pictures from my last phone are still stored on a Cloud service. I'll see if I can find some of my better winter hiking pictures and post one or two.

Interesting. There is a small city in my state called Iron Mountain, MI (They have not mined iron there in probably 100 years.) It is also the home base of USA Olympic Ski Jumping.

It is about 400 miles from where I live. They get snow like your January 2012 blizzard every year.

Ok, snowing fall during all the day and I have time to return in my feelings that I felt in People's Republic of the Vietnam :rocker:

Muine is a fisher's village and that is all that you can see at this point. Sea, beach and waves, this is a very popular place among surfers from all over the world. The season of big waves begins in September, if I remember correctly.

If you need multi-storey hotels, then you definitely are not here. This is the remote place, here live simple Vietnamese. Good-natured, smiling people who loved us very much, many of them worked in Russia and in particular in Siberia. Many people know Russian a little, which amazed me, although it is very difficult for them to speak. Those who know English a bit, but in a cafe you can explain what exactly you need without problems. The menu is usually in Russian and English.

Our hotel was small, on the 1st line, with a view from the room to the sea. The hotel was mainly inhabited by Vietnamese from the interior of Vietnam. The Russians were just us, a few more Europeans and the rest of the Asians :) The total immersion in the Vietnamese food culture and the constant noise from their conversations, they talk very loudly among themselves.

The most important dish in Vietnam is "soup-pho". I highly recommend trying it and pouring as many sharp spices as possible, it's just the food of the gods! When on the street +35 Celsius, you are served hot soup and you still pour there the red chili pepper is fire, but ice-cold beer helps not to burn :FIREdevil

In the photo this is an ordinary street cafe in which any Vietnamese can eat, i.e. not for tourists, there is a bit dirty, there is no tablecloth on the table, but 2 times cheaper than in the neighboring cafe at the hotel. We really liked to eat in such places.

P_20160627_135709

On the street you can find the flag of Vietnam, they are very patriotic people who are proud of their victory over the US, in the Vietnam War. I hope that I do not hurt your feelings by saying these words here.

I like beach holidays, I hate vanities. Therefore, on vacation, I try to be a seal :) My wife forced me to go on an excursion to Dalat, a city in the mountains, founded by French colonists. Along the way, you pass coffee plantations, I never saw coffee trees, and here I even touched them on the field. Vietnam is now the number one supplier in the coffee market in the world, it has bypassed even Brazil!
