Beautiful pictures, and a great time of year!

May your 2018 be very prosperous!!

Understatement of 2017: "Lenin was a prominent political figure".

Thank you Andy. Thanks for the wish!!

Can you explain to me the last sentence, I'm afraid of misunderstanding its meaning. What did you mean?

Stas, this thread is fantastic! I am learning so much about where you live. The coat of arms for your city is very cool. The photos are fantastic and you have a beautiful family. I was in the USA military for over 20 years, Many of those during the Cold War. It is fascinating to see where you live.
Best wishes and cheers!

Lol. My thoughts exactly.

Fantastic posts Stas26. Although my wife has been to your lovely country a few times, I've not had the pleasure. I would imagine there would be some fantastic motorcycling opportunities.

Hi Stas
I have not posted on your thread before but I would like to thank you for educating us so well about your region.
As to Andy's line that you don't understand, an understatement means that you have not given your sentence enough emphasis, enough power.
Lenin was one of THE most prominent of the politcal figures of the 20th century and here in the Western hemisphere is seen as a monster along with Stalin, Hitler, Causescu(sp?), Pol Pot and a few others.
Andy was making a humerous point that unfortunately doesn't translate easily to another language. I hope this clears your confusion.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your political perspective) not all see him as a monster as his policies continue to impact, for better or worse, western policy, particularly on the left.

The point I was trying to make is that you don't need to say who Lenin, Churchill, Roosevelt (your pick), or any of several names that are instantly recognizable to all but the very uneducated. And, as always, it was intended in humor.

While we should not get into a political conversation, I would not place Lenin in the category of Hitler, Stalin, Ceausescu and other who did great harm to their own citizens. The Cold War caused lots of Communist leaders to be vilified in the west.

Regardless, Will Rogers was a humorist from Oklahoma. I would not identify him other than by name because he is well recognized in the US. Would you have recognized that name? And, you remember Tolstoy, he wrote books, I think...

Have a great 18!!

TNX, Rib? (is it your real name?)

Ribs and brisket are traditional (?) meats slow cooked/smoked on an outdoor grill in most parts of the US. Typically a summer outdoor affair (difficult below about 10-20C). The ribs are usually pork (pig) although some restaurants "out west" do beef. Brisket is a cut of meat from a cow, typically the lower front of the chest. Normally very tough. If cooked slowly for many hours it is very tender.

Many, MANY different styles of spice rubs and sauces depending on the part of the US you come from. I am partial to the tomato based ones, with a little sweetness and some heat !

The general term is bar-b-que (BBQ), but depending on where you live, that may be the method of cooking (always slow and the best is over hardwood) or the eating of said meat (a.k.a. picnic).

Please lets not turn this into a political thread ! I will just say Communism, in it purist form, is "interesting".

Most people think of the US as a democracy. The only "true" democracy I know of was ancient Greece. We live in a constitutional federal republic. One of my favorite historical quote from Thoma Jefferson is

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

About democracy - I agree with you about ancient Greece
Unfortunately the world is ruled by money, not people.

I will digress a little from the topic of the forum.

Our media always inspire us that the inhabitants of one country want to capture another. To me, and also to my friends, acquaintances from my environment and such thoughts do not enter my head, we do not need the USA, EUROPE, AFRICA, and even China and Asia, I personally do not want to seize and force anyone. It seems to me that all these arguments are similar to the slogans of the fascists, that Jews and Russians must be destroyed as wrong nations that are unworthy to live on the earth.
Most likely, this whole situation, a great political game of people with a huge amount of money, for the further growth of their wealth.

I graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Siberian Federal University. In the first year of the university we had several subjects devoted to the history of the formation of law, since ancient times and the apotheosis of democratic principles was just an ancient Greece. But we all know that it did not last long, because rich people (oligarchs) do not need the power of the people, they themselves want to be the power.

In our history, figures such as Lenin and Stalin played a huge role in the history of the country, I can compare them with Napoleon, Hitler, Lincoln, Margaret Thatcher, Churchill and others.
In different ways, you can evaluate each of them, but they are all great people who have mastered the destinies of the world.

Unfortunately, I can't say that all of this persons I like, because politics is a dirty business. :dunno:

I grew up in a typical middle class, working neighborhood. My Dad was a "meat and potatoes" person, so that was what we ate. I never ate "ethnic" food until I was in my 20s !

Where I live now we have a lot of ethnic cuisines. Japanese (and I mean real Japanese, not Americanized sushi !), Chinese, Szechuan, Cantonese and Mandarin), Tai, Mexican (someone else will have explain TexMex), Italian, Greek, Indian and Middle Eastern/Lebanese. There are a few Polish restaurants around here and even a few Vietnamese and Russian.

There is not typically this much variety in most US cities.

This will make you feel at home ! I live near the right side of the base of the mitten. The white streaks are wind blown snow. Most of it picked up by the wind blowing over the "warm" water of the Great Lakes.

In our city there is a delivery to the house - sushi, Chinese food, rolls, burgers, steaks. In Krasnoyarsk, there are straight restaurants of Chinese cuisine, Japanese, Italian, French, burgers, but I was not in the US and I do not know the taste of this classic American hamburger, only watched the recipes on Youtube, where the cook showed how and what to cook, but I think I got far from the same thing that is sold in your country. At us to find such sauces which are used for your kitchen is unrealistic because no one carries them, and ordering from an auction of ebay or amazon seems to me a stupid idea :)

Hi for all peoples! :)

I wish you a Happy New Year!

The new year greeted us with frost at night, about -30 Celsius, and the day warmer -25C. Morning came frosty mist that's fine.

Mom's Toyota Vitz battery is discharged, because it has a short trips the route home-work-home and pre-heater "Hydronic" (Made in Germany) drains the battery much. For short trips, the battery is failing to charge, and therefore have to plug it into the charger at home. At my wife Katya's car, I also decided to recharge the battery, the car is almost all the time without movement. This is a fun time of year, a lot of cars in the yard with the hood open. We call it "dancing with a tambourine around the car"

IMG_20180103_003132

I use a battery charger made in the USSR. This is the charger of my wife's grandfather (kingdom is heavenly for him ).

According to the rules, it is necessary to charge the battery with a current of 1/10 of the capacity of the battery

IMG_20180103_003002

The charger has been refined by me with the help of rubber bands and electrical tape :) It is necessary to re-make the wires for charging to thicker ones so that they do not warm themselves at maximum power.

Happy New Year too. We are having a cold spell here too but not as low as you.
25-30F daytime and nights at 5-10F.

So you have to carry the battery upstairs to your home to charge them or leave them in the garage? It looks like a wood floor with the wood baseboard trim.

Cars stand on the street near the high building, then I took the batteries to the apartment. The floor in the apartment is concrete, covered with PVC tiles with a wooden design.

Looks like a good charger, even with your expert modifications.:bounce:

Does it automatically taper off as the battery voltage come up or continue to provide enough voltage to provide the selected amperage?

Some of the Russian sayings you quote I have a difficult time understanding. Lobster (or was it crab) on the mountain top was easy. And dancing around the car with tambourine is very graphic and funny. I may use that phrase the next time I'm doing it.

As teenagers we sometimes performed what we called a Chinese fire drill. When you stop the car at a red light, everyone jumps out of the car and runs around it one time, returning to their original seats. Repeating it now seems extremely silly and dangerous, but at 17 years old it somehow was fun. Same thing with driving with the car in reverse around a roundabout late at night when there was little traffic.

January is already 10% gone. Where did it go?

It's almost summer:thumbup:

Andy is here :pimpflash

I can only adjust the amperage, everything is done manually. I check the voltage with a multimeter manually. The standard charging time is from 8 to 20 hours, depending on the battery capacity and the degree of its discharge.

You meant proverbs, about "Until the cancer on the mountain does not sift?" :)

"Dancing with tambourines around the car" in our understanding is the dances of northern shamans with a tambourine, so that a miracle happened and the machine started :)

January came, and in Siberia it is the coldest month of winter, which in the 20's traditionally ends with Epiphany frosts.

Thanks for sharing...we are getting Siberia temperatures here too!
So I bundle up with layers like you, think about being stranded in my car if it fails and keep an emergency kit of blankets, candles, sterno fuel, and matches, lighters, etc.
You got me curious about business practices at your work in Russia, when I saw this reply from you.

.... I cant go to vacation offen with my business, I travel 1 time in 3 year

You mentioned you don't go on vacation very often because of your business.
We work for vacation days and if we don't take them before the end of the year, we lose them...unless you are the owner of a business.
Do you own a business?
Are you the boss, owner?
Does your business provides a service, produces commercial products, or provides advice to other people?
What do you do at your business?
How many hours do you work each day?
How many holidays do you get a year?
Does your local government provide monetary incentives for the business?
In our country, if a women or ethnic minority owns a business, they may get a lower tax rate.
Just curious about why you don't take vacations and what government does to promote services and products in the country.

So far I figured out you cannot buy a Russian made sports car, there isn't a Russian made snow blower for residential use, and you work a lot....:lol_hitti
