Next up... a buddy of mine from work called and asked if I could use some tools. He knows I do the tool thing and he doesn't work on anything. Has a tool set he wanted to get rid of that belonged to his ex-wife's cousins brothers uncles sisters dog. Was left at his house a couple years ago. Just wants to get rid of it. I say sure, let's go to lunch and bring the stuff with you. So long story short, he had a set of Duralast tools, and couple torque wrenches. He said give me $20 and you can have it all. I also bought him lunch. Not a bad set of tools.

It is missing the 10 and 12 mm sockets, ill find those to fill the set back up,

Probably right Lugz.

Don and Folwer, I think I traded all that style away to a GJ member (currently inactive) a few years ago. Not sure I have any left.

JV, cool finds! I picked up a Yankee No. 30A last week that had NO plating on the brass. Thinking it was early/prewar (before Dec 7th...)
I can never turn down the Yankee screwdrivers. I've found a few that are all brass, especially the Goodell and Pratts.

Finally got around to yesterdays haul. I hit a bunch of antique shops, restore, and second hand stores, Garage sales ect.... I found a couple of cool things! The P&C pebble 4way is prob my favorite! ended up at a ladies Garage sale with a ton of old tools but looked like they had been underwater or in a fire... they cleaned up pretty well though... Also found a couple of bread pans I love to get, for working on things I like to out all the parts in one. so I don't lose small parts.

That P&C lug wrench IS pretty awesome!

I know you have a late 1944 Bright Star TL-122-D, found in early February in a huge haul of stuff that included several flashlights.

Roger that! It was used in the LED conversion tutorial. I'm awaiting more supplies to do this one, and a two cell mag light, and I can't recall if my 3 cell mag is already LED. Second time I've put it somewhere and forgotten where that somewhere is...

Kind of a productive day at sales today. I wanted a hip roof PowrKraft box I saw in some estate sale pictures. We were able to get it and a couple more items. We then went to a sale I saw on Craigslist. It was crazy crowded and full of tools. The seller wanted so little money for the first bag I filled that I went back and filled another. Lots of Craftsman, Thorsen and PowrKraft. Here are some pictures. The first picture is the first sale. The next two pictures are Craftsman tools. The next is Thorsen. The next two are PowrKraft and the last shot is the miscellaneous tools.

Picked up a automatic key cutting machine from Craigslist yesterday. It’s an HPC Codemax 1200max. Seller was asking $350 for this $4000 machine and when I contacted him he said it was because it didn’t work properly.

Seller got it from a building manager that used it to key office keys. Keys weren’t getting fully cut. They put in a new cutting wheel which made no difference then it was sent to the manufacturer for service. The cost to rebuilt it was half the cost of a new one so they decided to just buy new and this was sent back. The seller was happy with the deal because the amount I paid covered the ship cost (both ways) and the custom box.

The factory quoted $1500 to $1800 to rebuild it and I wasn’t going to invest that much into it. So when I got it home I ran some tests and found that everything worked but that each cut was too shallow by maybe 1/16”. There’s a mechanical adjustment to fine tune the depth that helped but it was still off more that the adjustment allowed.

Opened it up and found that the depth of cut is controlled with a stepper motor with is zeroed with a limit switch. The arm of the limit switch was slightly bent. I bent it back and after a few tries got it cutting to spec (within 0.004”). Then I could use the factory fine tuning to get it perfect.

It cuts by depth and spacing and has built in library of all the standard keys. It can also be connected to a pc using a serial cable.

None of the accessories were included (different profile cutting wheels, tip gauges, software, wrenches). I’ll buy the tip gauges and one more wheel for cabinet locks (current wheel is for house / office locks).

The seller had only $150 into it and I had no idea if I could repair it. He agreed to sell it for that amount. Not bad for $150!

Wow you ****! That is an awesome find! Glad you were able to fix it, I can't believe the factory didn't catch it but I guess they would rather sell someone a new machine instead.

My local flea market was a bust this weekend but I did manage to find a nasty looking starrett level for $1 that someone had used for concrete work at some point. It took some patient cleaning but it turned out pretty good. 0433323066ad96c4f798008f0677ac96.jpg

And I FOUND the missing Maglight. 3 C cells as I remembered, already LED, but needs the adapters for the Lithium cells...

Interesting, its no bigger, and the lens is smaller, than my 2 C cell Maglight...

Mrs No_Garage and I went a little wild this weekend on non-garage items at an estate sale. We bought her a desk and a matching office chair (that needs some love).

Today we went by a "all the stuff in the driveway is free" posting and grabbed a Hi-Lift 484 jack from the pile that I hope to resell.

The first pic is the desk in it's new resting place.

The second pic is my recent additions to the chair collection - the chair that goes with the desk is on the left.

The third pic is the hi-lft jack

Cheers

Jim

Saw a listing on Craigslist for stuff from a home dental office for sale about 30 mins away. Headed over to take a look.

They had a cool 1950s cabinet for $200 which I passed on.

But I did get a vintage autoclave for $40

I noticed they had a pile for the scrapper and they let me grab a few items for free.

As I’m loading up the scrapper arrives and has this in his truck which he sells me for $5.

Baldor grinder / polishing lathe

Works fine but bearings are noisy and will be replaced.

What did you do to clean that thing, Sunset_Z28?

Lots of scrubbing with a brush and dish soap. Then I used a pick to remove the chunks of concrete that were stuck to it. Afterwards, I gave it an evaporust bath.

They look like Safway braces would work. If I remember correctly, Safway uses what looks like your scaffolding has: a spring lock for the braces.
Might be easier to find, good luck.

Actually if you can find something a little stronger that electrical conduit, you might just make your own.

Brian

I'm not worried, if I have to I can get decent prices for new accessory pieces at Lynn Ladder not too far away from me. Also looking at Scaffold Express online. Given the weather here the last few days, I'm not in a rush. It can wait until mud season arrives.

Here is my number from todays misadventure....
IMG_9252.jpg

I had to go out towards Boston for work today, but I thought I would have enough time to sneak in an estate sale before sitting in meetings for the rest of the day. I found a sale enroute and swung by about 15 minutes before the scheduled opening. I was number 61.:eyecrazy:

I've taken numbers before, but this was a little over the top. They let in 25 or 30, then it was one out one in.... I hung out for a while but eventually gave up. They had given out over 90 numbers when I walked off....

I've been to way too many sales where I'd be happy to get that number.

Only one sale today - nothing much saved, but only spent about $6 on a few items. Most are rust covered, and will need some help, but that's what EvapoRust is for.

long pair of vintage scissors
Craftsman ball peen hammer, needs new handle
pair of Spin-Tite wood handled nutdrivers
Fairmount DOE wrench
10-inch adjustable wrench, no name
old file and rasp, destined to become knives in the forge
small jack, no name

Went to the flea today and had a Lugnutz sort of day. Greedy greedy there today!

Step 1: Dug out a bunch of Snap On sockets from a mixed box of sockets, after being quoted $100 for the whole box (75% Taiwan ****).
Step 2: Quoted too high a price for the few SO.
Step 3: sockets moved from the box on the ground to table with everything else for ebay asking prices where greedy girl wants $25 each for a broken Snap On file.

-Another vendor there brings lots of Snap On to sell. Most of his prices are 2-3X what myself or most anybody are willing to pay there. Just not the right crowd.

-One of the regular vendors hit me with a too high price for a couple ratchets, one pretty worn looking too.

-another vendor had screwdrivers in a tray on the ground marked 50 cents each. He knows I know tools. I picked up the wood Craftsman at the top right of my photo. He asked me what kind it was , I said Craftsman. He wanted to see it and about didn’t want to sell it saying it was worth more. Then, asked if I in fact wanted it. I said yeah. He said for you okay, I wasnt going to tell him the next stubby i picked up was Snap On!

People are funny. They should sort their ****.

I still did pretty good.

Today’s haul:

Double face hammer- no markings at all. Any ideas on the maker?
Vlchek and Craftsman wood drivers
Snap On file ( not from that lady)
3 Snap on drivers
Craftsman 3/8 ratchet
Wrenches- Sacca (France), Wright, old Mac
Snap On press tip
Sockets-Williams,Williams u joint, Snap On, SK, Proto, 3 Bonney pieces
Craftsman Ford style adjustable and pipe wrench

Totally skunked today. It was sunny and I thought some diehards might be out, but only one vendor - nothing of interest. Tried an indoor 2nd hand place and found a cardboard box with some assorted junk. Fished out a Bonney no199 shop knife, a small ViseGrips, a scratch awl, and a stainless outlet coverplate. Asked for a price: “Oh, those aren’t for sale. We just cleared out a house and haven’t priced em yet.”
Ugh.

I'll bite. How did you remove the concrete without damaging the metal or the vial?

Sunset (or anyone),
what did you use for the black paint? I have the best results with some of the high heat grill paints, but find regular gloss black to look too thick in some instances.

Luckily it wasn't stuck near as bad as I thought. After soaking it a while in soapy water it came off much easier than I expected. I had almost convinced myself that it was probably gonna be junk before I even started. As far as paint goes, it only has some of the original paint. Most of the dark color you see in the pic is from the evaporust.

You should have snatched them up, tossed them back in the box and given it a big shake and told the proprietor "no problem". Place like that definitely wouldn't get my business going forward. :-/

I'm back!

This weekend, none of the estate sales or yard sales turned up any tools. Near my house however, there was a garage sale sign, I ended up driving 5 miles out into the middle of nowhere thinking "there better be something good here". Well there was, i picked up this baldor dental buffer for $30. Im going to change the plug to a grounded one, however, it works like a charm and has absolutely no vibration.

I got 5 wrenches at a sale from the bottom of a rusty tool box and there was one Plomb in it. I took some steel wool to get off the grime and it looks ok and was happy to see the name.. The others were old Blue Point wrenches. Each wrench was 50 cents cause the looked like **** the lady said.
