BJ: the fender is looking great BTW so your hours have been well spent. not sure if my 10 pound cat likes the big bunnies, but i've found more than half a dozen half small ones laying for me to clean the rest of them up around the front of our home. i've seen YouTube videos of Hawks swooping down on bunnies while kids were playing in the yard with them so yes a cage outside or a box to put quickly on them is a great idea. Bunnies are at the bottom of the food chain, but should make a great pet.

take care and keep up the good work!!!

Wait another 35 years and tell me again about running out of steam.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Too bad about the sensor wire. I would just have hung it from some baling wire to hold it up.:lol_hitti

I'm eager to see the fender shot as well. 20 hours is significant!

It's getting closer.

Andy you are right I have no reason to complain. I normally don't have this problem. But I think it amounted to being inside the shed with not much airflow, wearing the respirator for a couple of hours, and the humidity and just sweating all my fluids out.

Bret just catching up on things.

That certainly is commercial quantities of cup cakes, well done..

I can relate to your twenty hours on the fender, the devil is in the detail. its looking great.

This is all very true Steve. I feel if I rush now and miss something I am going to see it in the final paint for years to come and kick myself for not seeing it.

Hi Bret, are you still happy with this little gem ? I changed my first plan and might have a spot where something similar will work.

Hi GB. Good to hear from you. Yes still love the cabinet. Only thing I would do different is put 2 drawer slides instead of one per drawer.

Thanks Drives. Yes definitely a different kind of pet.

My wife and I go on a nightly walk in our neighborhood and down a connecting road to the next neighborhood. 2 nights ago we encountered a dead snake on one of the sidewalks where the are doing some construction. Someone ran him over thank goodness. Didn't get close enough to see what kind as I am deathly afraid of them. But anyways on our walk last night there were 5 buzzards eating it and there was little left but some meat. So yes definitely some overhead flying hazards in the area for the bunny.

Wednesday spent another 4 hours on the fender before it got to hot for me to work. I was still recovering from my running out of steam the previous day. Had to rest up in the afternoon so Andy won't poke fun of me. :bounce:

Two high build sessions and 2 glazing sessions and the fender is damn near ready. I found 2 small areas that need glazing after the second high build. Don you were right my friend the bodywork and sanding on this fender has been the easiest thing to get right on all the bodywork I have done.

Yesterday I spent the entire morning at the pick n pull with a friend. Went to get parts for the 95', Camaro and see what else I could scavenge off the three 4-5-6 chevy trucks they had. Sadly all the trucks were gone along with anything pre 68. Not sure if they are under new management or what. I understand they probably don't make much off the older vehicles around here I just hope they weren't crushed.

Anyways I was out to find a trim piece for the Camaro that mounts behind the mirror on the drivers door. It's held on with one screw and mine broke where the screw head went. A new one is $35. Which is STUPID!. I found both the a driver and a passenger one and looking at my receipt not even sure they rang them up. I also found a driver door lock switch. I hope it works but again it was $5.59. I also found a cargo lamp switch for the 95' with the bracket. They charged me $5.59. I have seen those go on ebay for $20+. I also grabbed the Camaro trim piece off the dash and paid $2.80. I spent a total of $38.99. So the almost the cost of one trim piece. Can't beat that.

Pulled a fan and clutch off of a really nice 74' Squarebody GMC that I was kinda sad to see at the junkyard. It definitely could have been saved. But I can get it cleaned up and painted and installed on the 64' and get rid of my death blade throwing flex fan.

20180524_134146 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Lastly a package arrived from a truck buddy in Oklahoma. He sent me 2 original vent windows from one of his parts trucks. They are in excellent shape. He also gave me the correct trac bar bracket I need to go with my 70' rearend. I will get that blasted an painted and put on and hopefully it will line my axle back up centered and save me having to buy an adjustable bar. I stopped and got some grade 8 hardware to mount it with. I have to grind some rivets out where it goes underneath one of the rear braces and replace with the bolts.

Want to thank everyone who has served and is serving to protect this great country and allow us to enjoy our everyday lives. I finally got around to getting my flag up. MURICA!

20180525_100104 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Still working on the damn fender trying to get it perfect I suppose. I am getting better at applying the glazing putty thinner and smoother so its easier to sand.

20180525_124231 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

It go so hot yesterday finally had to break out the big fan.

20180525_124236 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Screwed these boards to the sawhorse so I could tilt the fender up to make the bottom edge easier to shoot.

20180525_145036 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180525_145120 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I shoot another medium coat of high build but by the time I got it blocked it was too hot to do anymore painting.

20180526_082707 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So I did some sandblasting and rattle can priming.

This morning my plan was to block the fender. Shoot another high build and block it and then shoot some color. Well Mr. Sun made it almost 90 in the shed by 10am.

So I took care of that problem. I took page from the Bob Heine Book!

20180526_155034 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The temp when I quit for the day. It was 98* outside. Now I can paint anytime I want no matter what the temp outside is. The A/C was only running for about an hour. Have no idea actually how cool it can make it.

20180526_155004 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

An added bonus. This shelf space where the a/c was sitting.

20180526_123443 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

And the wife cleaned up the office while I was out slaving in the heat.

Grats on the AC unit. I'm too sore to post an update on my thread about my new steps, but boy will I have a report. It was very hot in NJ today and we had a 15 minute thunderstorm. That fender looks like it is going to enjoy climate control. I am seriously going to need a small unit for one of my 100 year old windows.

As others have said, congrats on the AC. Also don't you just love junk yards or more specifically pull a part type yards. I picked up what would have cost $200 on the bay and walked out for $48 yesterday.

BJ: I would have thought a man with your skills at Woodworking would have had a sawsall long ago, but nice to see you know how to cut holes and repair them. looks like it's working too. just curious if you'll notice any spike in your electric bills, but I bet you will get a lot of work done in the shed now even when it's over 100 outside which is a big plus.

the fender is well looking like a real fender so congrats and looks like the hard work will pay off in your overall look of your cool old truck.

Great work!!

After you get too hot you really do need to take it easy for a while. maybe two weeks.

Somebody said you added an air conditioner to your shed but I don't think so. You just relocated it and plugged it in.:bounce:

Mine run all the time and cost about $50 per month each. Looks like your shed is insulated, how many sq ft are you cooling? Can you get your wife to turn it on before you get home on evenings you plan to work?

It's a great thing! Stay cool!

I made some tool holders for all the screwdrivers. I hate having screwdrivers in drawers.

Hey Bret, what did you use to attach the screwdriver holder wood to the peg board? I am going to be putting up some peg board in my shop at some point in June and have been thinking if I need to just attach it to short arms or if they make hangers that you just need to attach to the wood.

Bret, you are going to find all kinds of excuses to go out there. I'm glad you joined the club!

I have no EXCUSE now for not getting some painting done on truck parts. :bounce:

Thanks Shorty. Out of the 100+ up there I think I have fully completed maybe 10 models in my entire life. Alot of them have the engines done.

As others have said, congrats on the AC. Also don't you just love junk yards or more specifically pull a part type yards. I picked up what would have cost $200 on the bay and walked out for $48 yesterday.

JB you ain't kidding. I didn't find everything I wanted but the door trim piece I found for the Camaro for $2 sure beats the $35 everywhere online was charging for a piece of plastic. The door lock switch was $5. I took a gamble on that as it looks like it might have gotten wet. A new one is only $16 if it doesn't work. The Cargo light switch for the 95 was $5 as well and new one of those is $35.

Drive I have never had a use for a sawzall really. In my mind its mainly for demo work. Its not very good at cutting straight or good cuts really. But its nice to have if you are cutting wood that might have nails or screws.

Thanks Andy. I didn't really get overheated that day but man I did today. Had to stop at 2p and come in. The heat index was 99* so I guess I hit my limit today. Took a 2 hour nap in the cool. I don't really think the A/C is going to cost that much to run. It can bring it down from 90* to 78* in about 45 min. Not too bad. And today I started it at 8a and it cycled off quite a bit. Its only cooling the front half of the shed which is 12X10. It's rated for 400sqft so no challenge for it really. And yes I insulated the walls and ceiling. I have full ventilated soffits and a 4 foot ridge vent. I also caulked every seam of the OSB I put up.

NJ I used some L shaped screws. I'm not really sure what they are called. I got them at Lowes. Here are some pics of them installed. They are about 2 inches long so you have to plan the width of your holder around how long they are.

When you install them you have to make sure they both line up with pegboard holes. And you have to play around with how far to screw them in to balance being able to tilt them into the pegboard and not having them out too far and the tool holder having slack from the pegboard.

20180531_202433 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Hope that explains it well enough. I don't have any left in the package to take a pic for you. If I remember next time I am at Lowes I will grab some more.

That makes perfect sense. I have leftover oak flooring from when I moved into my house that would make excellent candidates for holders.

It will be nice being able to hang my sharp cheap chisels and whatever else I manage to hang.

They're called "square bend hooks" by some people.:wtf:

Your installation looks great! I've been doing that for years but can't afford pegboard so I put long screws through the board.

To make installation easier you might try putting a 45 bevel on the top 1/3 of the back of the board. That allows it to go in farther before the hook makes it's turn. All the support is on the bottom edge of the board and the back of the peg board anyway. It would also give you a nice tray to catch debris and dust. I seem to find lots of small stuff like needle files stuck behind my screwdrivers.

I wish there was an attachment to make my Craftsman air compressor be a power washer. Most of the results I've seen would require a 100 gallon tank in order to keep up with the air demand. I'm thinking I could just pressure wash the old wood from my steps to clean them up. Maybe I need to find one for father's day... :headscrat

And I just finished reading the whole thread. :rocker:

I got to the part where you were writing about possibly painting your truck bay boards black. That got me thinking, what if you just stained it black/dark and hit it with a bunch of coats of protectant? Then you may get a durable surface and see the wood grain all with a nice dark color. It might even be cooler temp wise for when the boys might want to hang out in the back.

One for your 2018 list: Home Depot may deliver the water softener salt for free with minimum purchase which would save you the hassle of having to hump it into the '95 and then to wherever you're going to store it. I recently ordered the vinyl white lattice to surround my new steps and unlike Lowes, HD is free delivery. Not sure how far you are from HD and if you regularly just pick up a bag whenever you're there, but free delivery is pretty hard to beat. When I was growing up, my parents had a delivery service for the softener salt which meant I only needed to move it from the garage to the tank which was all of about 20 feet.

I have a pretty good feeling about your truck getting registered by September. It's one of those hunches.

Bless you NJ for making it through my jumbled thread. It's not for everyone but there are a few that enjoy my ramblings and keep coming back for more. :headscrat

As fars as the bed wood. I am very stubborn and as such I have my heart set on painting the boards black just as they came from the factory. If it comes out like I want I think many people are going to like it. My other reasoning for not wanting to do stain and then topcoats is in my mind that is for fine furniture and this is a truck. And not a show truck so there will be things hauled back there I am sure.

I have never had anything delivered from Home Depot. I will have to give it a try maybe, but for wood products I just have to go to the store and pick everything out myself. The 18-20 yr old they would have pull it would not be scrutinizing the lumber.

The salt I just pickup up a bag from work when it is needed. And what's even funnier is I bought one yesterday!

I am keeping a positive attitude towards the truck being registered and inspected this year. It might not be 100% but enough for inspection. I spent a good chunk of change yesterday for 2 very important pieces. The only big purchase left besides doing disc brake upgrade sometime next year will be the carpet. I am going to order from ACC and I think it is around $400.

Thanks for stopping in.

Time for some updates.

Last day Jay and her mom drove the 64' around.

20180531_083149 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180531_083043 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Took Nick to his summer camp last Sunday. Pick him up this Saturday. To say he was excited was an understatement.

20180601_071437 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Got a small parts order for the 64". Mostly stuff to finish the bed installation and the inside of the door panels. Decided on the 55-59' Chevy truck taillights instead of the 50' Pontiac ones in the fenders.

20180602_181633 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180602_160039 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Being impatient I wanted to see them mounted. Mock up.

20180602_182826 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180602_182830 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So Sunday morning getting the car ready to take Nick to camp the battery decided to die. Fortunately the nearby Firestone had a Interstate battery for it instock and it was $40 cheaper than any house brand battery at the local parts stores. I don't get that.

20180603_122730 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Made it to camp and back with no problems.

Some pictures of Nick at camp. We get daily updates on their facebook page.

Miss this little guy. Can't wait to see him on Saturday.

This morning I had plans of getting the 95' inspected so I can send off for the registration. I went first thing so it wouldn't take long. Turns out the truck was idling too high and they couldn't do the emissions inspection unless it was 1200 rpm or lower. I noticed the truck had a high idle since I took ownership in Feb. but I assumed it was because it was a manual truck.

So Mr. Google suggested likely causes for high idle. IAC valve, tps sensor, and Throttle body base gasket. Went and bought all 3 for $111 at O'riellys.

Took out the IAC and the gasket around it fell apart. Installed the new one and reset the IAC with instructions from internet. Still had high idle.

20180607_092413 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Really didn't think it was TPS sensor as it didn't show any other symptoms of a bad TPS. Checked all the vacuum lines and couldn't find anything bad. So sprayed Carb cleaner around base of TBI and the idle speed up.

DING DING DING. I think I found the problem!

20180607_110731 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Apparently it had been like this for awhile as the area on the manifold where the gasket was missing was black. Cleaned and reinstalled with a new gasket and now she idles perfectly at 800 rpm. And to boot she runs so much better now. Can't believe the computer could compensate for that big of a vacuum leak. So I am going to return the TPS sensor and this repair cost me $72.

And it passed inspection. The guy told me in 2 years it will be 25 yrs old and exempt from emission testing. At that time I will probably slap headers on and run a true dual exhaust.

So that pretty much took all my morning and by lunch time is was 96* outside. Finished up some lawn work and chores around the house and that was it I was done.

My boss retires tomorrow and my new boss starts on Monday. So that will be fun. Fortunately my new boss I worked with for 5 years when I started with HEB in 1998. I haven't worked for her since 2004. So this should be interesting.

A nice stash of goodies for the truck.

BJ: looks like your son can stand and maybe walk, but he needs a wheelchair maybe cause he can't do that for very long periods of time? He sure looks like a happy kid and i'm sure that has a lot to do with you and your bride's work.

our kids used to love CAMP and they always came back a little happier so hopefully yours will too.

great to see you have been finding new OLD SCHOOL type parts for your cool truck too.

Having met your family, I can vouch for the boys.

They are great kids.

Your wife is OK too

Lights look good.

Thank You Rian. I am looking forward to seeing your new adventure this year.

Bret, thank you for the update.

Thank You Steve. I am getting close to the end and only have a handful of stuff that is needed to finish the truck. I can't believe the engine even ran. But it was idling 700rpm above where it was suppose too.

Nick had a ton of fun and spent this entire last week resting.

Thank You Drive. Yes Nick is still able to fully function for normal daily activities. He however does tire easily if there is alot of walking or stairs involved. His wheel chair goes to school with him so he can use it during transitions.

We are very fortunate as Nick is the only one at the camp with DMD that can still walk. All the other boys his age and younger ones are all bound to wheel chairs. He truly is a blessing from God and I love that little man!

I am in love with the 59' Tail lamps and they definitely add to my Hot Rod look I am going for.

The base gasket leak was a pretty common problem, good find!

It was an easy fix after it was diagnosed for sure and cheap too.

Just read you work for HEB. I liked shopping there when I was in Houston. Big company.

Hi Andy. HEB is a great company. We are closing in on 100,000 partners. I will be celebrating 20 years in November. I am definitely a lifer. HEB has been very good to me and taken care of my family.

A few quick updates from this past week.

The rear driver fender finally got installed for mockup.

I have never cleaned these tires since buying them in July of 13'. Coker tire sells a special formulated cleaner and dressing for these old school type tires. The problem is the 2 pk is $9.95 and the shipping for it over $10. I just never bought it because it was highway robbery. Lurking over on the HAMB. I discovered regular old Simple Green can be used to clean the whitewalls. Coker recommends no harsh chemicals or bleach to be used such as Whitleys Tire bleche.

So some Simple Green and stiff bristle brush, a quick dry off, and then a coating of 303 sealant the look good as new. A second benefit was cleaning them released that new tire smell again. So every time I walk in the garage now it smells like new tires. WIN!

Then I wired up the tailights.

The driver side worked but the passenger no go. Was the end of a long day and I gave up.

20180610_150057 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Fast forward to yesterday I discovered the passenger side bulb was no good. The light bulbs that came with the lights were loose inside the housing which obviously wasn't a great way to package them for shipping with UPS. New bulb and and both work now. I have tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals.

Did a quick repair on a ext cord my lawnmower tried to eat.

Wrapped it in 2 layers of electrical tape and put it back in service to the shed. I really need to run my 60 amp breaker box to the shed and make it official.

20180615_204838 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Last thing my junkyard fan ready to be installed.

20180615_201757 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180615_201744 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Dug through my engine fastener stash and found 4 studs to mount it with. The flex fan uses a spacer and long bolts to mount it. I didn't get the studs off the truck in the junkyard because they are a pain in the *** to remove and I knew I had a set from the Caprice's original setup. All those cans of baby formula from long ago make good organizers.

Worked on getting the passenger door for the 64' paint ready. I really wanted to paint the interior side today but didn't quite get that far.

Checked the fit of one of the speakers I am going to use and the hole was actually too big on this door. So I stitched on two tabs to make it work.

I have two different sets of speaker grilles. Not sure which one I am going to use so both went into primer so I can spray them interior color to hide them.

20180616_140429 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Took the door latch out it will need to be cleaned up, painted, and re greased.

20180616_130352 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

A few small places on the interior side to get it ready for paint.

20180616_133108 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Reprimed all the spots and took a blurry picture.

20180616_133311 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Flipped it over and did a round of glazing putty to get the outside finalized. That was it for the day will go at it again tomorrow and hopefully spray some color on the interior side.

Great progress!

Blurry pictures make my body work look good too.:lol_hitti

Ryan will be driving before you can finish that truck if you don't hurry. Reality is tough, eh? My little boy will be 50 this year.:wtf:

Yes they do Andy and mine as well. He will be driving age in 7 years. I hope to have it finished by then.

Funny how you cannot beat the smile on a kids face in a situation like this

I suspect the simple traditional grilles may be better visually.

He was excited to say the least. I think you are right the traditional will fit the style better.

Bret you have certainly been busy.

Nice work on the electricals, its great to see some nice detail in your work.

You will not be wiping that smile for some time yet..

Thank You Steve.

The Fedex Truck Freight dropped off some big boxes while I was at work today.

The wife opened them up and checked for any damage. She is a keeper!

I was very impressed with the packaging.

The rear cross sill for the bed.

After cleaning up all the packaging and getting rid of the boxes a test fit of the door of course. It fits perfect! Thank goodness. The rocker is good. So now it just needs paint.

20180618_183542 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

It is so nice to finally have a rust free and damage free part that I can just paint and not spend hours trying to make my body work look good. Money well spent.
