You can always use something other than metal alloy for the fill material. Maybe wax or plaster? Bore casting would not turn out well if you didn't do some pre-pour preparation. Smooth the pin hole a little. Or, cast just the bottom half of the pin hole, then turn the swivel to one side and cast the top half. Casting was just a wild idea. Looks like we have the proper dimensions anyhow.

I don't think I would trust 1/2" riv-nuts to hold a vise. I suspect that one day in a year or two they will fail. Hopefully nobody gets hurt when that happens. If the bench frame is thick enough, I'd tap the holes and bolt that receiver in that way.

I figure I will have my friend weld the receivers to the bench at some point for a more permanent installation. In the meantime however I'm confident in the strength. Each receiver is anchored with 4 bolts / rivnuts and I installed them correctly. Also the steel channel under the bench that allows these to be installed this way is not light duty by any means. I'm not sure of the exact gauge or thickness but drilling the 8 holes and stepping them up to the correct size for the rivnut was no easy task. I'm not sure I could apply enough force in any way to cause all 4 rivnuts to simultaneously fail but like I said, a couple welds are in store just to err on the side of caution.

Thanks, I did do the refresh on it. The vise was originally my wife's grandfather's, who was a machinist. I joined the forum years ago while finding this site thru a link on another forum. Then just recently I have been bitten by the bench vise bug and it led me right back here while doing some online searching. Lol.

These are the 2 products I used from HF.
The receiver is $18.99 and I used a 25% coupon making them just over $15 w/ tax. They had gloss black out of box versions and newer/nicer styled textured black versions in a box with a rounded edge around the square receiver.
The hitch mounted vise plate is no longer on their website but my store still has 2 or 3 on the shelf. I think they were originally $19.99 or more but are clearanced at $12.97 right now.

Been raining vises here the last few weeks, but it's just raining today. I stumbled across the ad shown on Ebay about a week ago, saved a copy, and meant to ask about the Triple Duty vise here but forgot. Anyway, stumbled across a Triple Duty vise yesterday at the flea market, pretty cool with the quick set feature. Did a search, but very little came up about these, other than maybe there were 3 sizes, 3-1/2", 4", and 5", like mine? Rest of the vises from yesterday include the other Wilton mechanics vise, 5-1/2" jaw, a Victor Jersey 2" clamp on, and the Stanley 2-1/2' clamp on. Have another Stanley just like it, except it has the swivel base.

What are you guys thinking on this vise. Maybe a Vanderman? Had a customer send these pic:s and wanted to see if anyone has seen one like it. Disregard the broken slide. Had cast in jaws where one gave away.

Kevin, can't help with what that vise is, other than rode hard and put away wet, but I don't think it's a Vanderman. The shape of the towers, as well as the base is all wrong.

The aluminum jaws on it are tore up pretty bad, so I will most likely pick some up from Dr. Scott. Other than that, it's in great shape. Just like that Morgan I got on Saturday.
I haven't decided on what color I'm gonna do that Morgan in yet, so now I'll have to figure out what color for the Wilton as well.

Strangely, the one in your ad has a Parker type collar, where mine has no collar, uses a spring to open the jaw. Nice ad, where'd you find it?

Bagged, that may say Bonney, Hercules, but it looks like a clone of an early Parker #20.---Right down to the front retainer clip.---All it's lacking is Parker on the horseshoe.---I believe that it was an understood thing, that everybody copied everybody's patterns back in the day.---Therefore nobody could call anybody out for it, cause everyone was guilty of it.---Oh there were probably plenty of patent infringement suits, but you can look at all the old vintage vises and tell there was a lot of cloning going on with just a tweak or two.

Quick shot and quick story as I need to go to bed.
I drove a 3+ hour round trio to go get this Mill vise: No name on it but almost 60 lbs: A touch under 5" wide (without those aluminum jaws in there...), maybe 4-7/8 high the body is between 16 and 17 " long the handle contraption contains some sort of clutch or cam lock? (I haven't quire figured it out, but I think it may be a two stage tightening sequence?)
This is a perfect size for my little Clausing vertical mill! 6X24 table and this vise will sit on it and the jaws are almost centered with it offset to the handle end.
I believe there are two pins you can take out and double the jaw opening!
If so, offsetting it the other way should center the wider opening?
Any one seen one like this? Brand? Possibly European?

Hi new to this thread but I need help! I've got a Fortis No 12 Bench Vice I've took it apart to grease it up putting it back together it just won't work
Problem no 1 i put the quick release back in but I didn't set the tension so obviously it didn't work so I set the tension and I just slid out of the brackets it's held in
No 2 when I was all back together with then tension set it wouldn't open and wouldnt close but when opened around 6 inches it would work so I used the quick release and it just slipped
Bit of a long one but I need help I know there's some people who know the ins and outs of Vices so I could really use your help thanks

Mikey: Welcome to the thread. The only information I have that might be of help is this catalogue page showing exploded views of Record vices that also have quick release mechanisms. There are several GJ members who are from the UK. They may have more specific information for you. Good luck.

Outlaw, never seen a machine vise like that one, what does Carla say. looks like the vise ways are at two different levels. How does it clamp to the machine table? Did you get the handle for it? Looks like a special spline. Curious on how it works for you and if it angle locks as you tighten. Make some new jaws for it out of A2 and I'll heat treat them for you and grind them in if you do not have a surface grinder.

454, I just got a similar Stanley Victor no. 743 not long ago. I had been looking for one for quite some time, but they usually seem to be too pricy, broken, or both.
Yours is marked Stanley Rule & Level like mine, and apparently this dated them to 1919-1920 or earlier. Great find!

What does Carla say?.........well, all I can say is that I don't remember ever seeing one of those vises. I've seen similar ones, but not the exact same one, to the best of my recollection. There were several mill vise makers who used what was later called the 'angle-lock' principle, a major improvement over the common earlier styles of mill vises, on which the movable jaw would tend to lift when tightened.
My first thought would be that it could be a product of one of the many small scale manufacturers here who produced a wide variety of tooling and equipment in the 1940's to late '60's time frame. There were literally dozens of small shops in the Los Angeles area who advertised this or that ingenious bit of high-quality tooling, as may be seen in period magazines like Popular Mechanics and American Machinist.
That said, yes, it could be European in origin..........the way to tell would be to take measurements of the various components, and note whether they tend to 'come out even' in inch or metric dimensioning.
