My broom! My broom!

I will kick up some dust for it--wait--there is dust everywhere in my shop. The broom will never be out of work.

 What a nice way to say thank you!

Oklahoma! Where the wind comes sweeping down the plain?

Speaking of sweeping, nice broom..

Ah, that explains the doctors' appointments.

Brooms, hammers, trivets - you do great work Andy..

I like the wind, if it were not for the wind everyone would want to live here and I couldn't afford it. And we'd probably have to learn a second language.

Thanks, I like making brooms, I just don't do much of it. I even need some more brooms for the shop, seems I can never find one and i don't want to grab a new one out of the broom shop every time I can't find one.

Thnaks for your kind words.

Andy yep you have been productive.

We thank you for you generosity and kindness.

The generosity and kindness are all gifts to me, so thank you!

Man you are "casting out" some product Andy. ***** you lost a tree. We have had some heavier than normal winds the last couple of days.

Bret

It was just a branch. We got it cut up today. Bradford pear so some of it will likely be used for smoking meat. I saved a piece to put in the lathe.

Looks like you have a small production run going on there Andy, looks good. We must have had some strong wind while I was away this weekend too. I lost a pretty good size limb I'll have to deal with later this week.

JB

Thanks, JB. I've only been melting and making ingots so now I'm ready to start some more trivets. I've got seven lined up.

June is blowing right by.

Yep, about 3/4" wind.

Had a great day!

The oil drain tank I'm using to pressurize to supply my oil burner needs a level gauge. I have some old vinyl tubing, 1/4" ID, so I made a sight gauge. The $10 box of brass fittings I bought at auction continues to come in handy. I've used at least ten fittings worth $5 each out of it and it looks the same.

attachment.php

That long string at the left of the picture is eighteen water hose quick disconnects hooked together. Not sure if I'll use them. Five more male ends on the right. Several street tees, cast bronze 1/2" and billet 3/8" like I used. Several needle valves and a few gate valves.

The pressure connection on the tank (it is designed to use up to 40 psi to drain the tank through a hose) had a relief valve. I knew the relief valve had to be communicated with the tank pressure so I pulled it off, installed a 1/4" street tee (from the auction box) and put the relief back on and a pipe thread to tubing adapter for a 1/4" copper tube (adapter from the box). I started a double flare on the tube to give it a swelled end to hold the tube.

attachment.php
At first i had the relief standing straight up but it was going to interfere with gauge replacement so I lean it 45 degrees in.

On the lower end I wanted to pull the ell out to drill and tap it for a connection. I couldn't get it to budge so took a second best route and installed a tee on the ell for oil supply to the burner (right) and needle valve with copper tube to the sight glass (left).

attachment.php

The needle valve allows the sight glass to be changed without draining the tank. I fI had wanted to change the sight glass with the tank pressurized I would have installed on eat the top too but the tank is regularly depressurized (I blow it down when I leave so I don't come back to a mess, the tank can hold 20 gallons).

So that's the sight glass. We'll see how long the tubing stays clear enough to see the oil level. It is inexpensive in any event.

attachment.php

Since the top of the sight glass is connected (communicated is the technical term) to the air space over the oil, and the bottom is connected under the oil level, the level in the sight glass will be the same as the level in the tank even when the tank is under pressure.

I may get some movement in the oil level indication when I first pressurize the tank due to air trying to go down the sight glass to get into the tank but seeing movement in the level is actually good to make sure it is not plugged up. Once the burner starts everything is stable with very little oil flow so indicated oil level should not be affected. I can't read oil level a low as I'd like, but the main value of the gauge is to know when to fill and to not overfill, with no gauge it was a real guessing game.

Got it all done with no trips to town. I like doing an entire project with stuff on hand. :bounce:

Thanks for looking in!!

If those quick connects are the ones I think, they seem to fit together well, but have an engineered problem.

If you use them, and rotation happens, the hard balls mash the brass at the edge of the trough near the tip, and raise the sides....Which have nowhere to go, so the whole thing locks up solid. A guy could save himself some frustration by taking it down a little before that happens.

That's always awesome when you have all you need for the job at hand right in the shop. My problem is I know I have it, but I usually can't find it until I get back from the trip to town.

Gosh, June is gone and I’ve missed almost 2 weeks of thread here. Good to see Hershey bouncing back and taking care of momma.

That is some auction box! Always nice when you can do a job like that without a run to the local supplier or wait a few days to be delivered. That is a really impressive stack of raw casting stock in the background too. Though at the rate you are turning out trivets, hammers and brackets you must have used up quite a bit already.

It's only taken me a few weeks of reading everyday, but finally I got caught up. :willy_nil Would love to get on a waiting list for some castings. I have a few old Dell laptops that still work that have a built in 25-pin parallel port that you may be interested in for trade. They were formatted and reinstalled the last time I checked. I was pretty close to recycling them but they are still safe in my basement. I believe they are running XP, and might even have a slightly newer version of Office already for you. Will let you know.

Glad to see that some of your harvested and seasoned yard metal could get recycled. Wondering if the fireworks could also be from some magnesium that snuck its way into the party.

How do you deliver the oil to be burned? Does it spray into a mist?

Hope you can continue to find sources of aluminum since it's hard for one person to consume that much Coke.

Interesting. I've heard rotation happens. Or something like that. They might be best melted down. I really have no use for them that I know of.

Boy have I been there. Go to town, buy three so you can have two spares and put them in a drawer where you find two more.

Of course a lot of the scheme is to figure out how to use what you've got.

Using miscellaneous auction stuff is one of my favorite things to do. Nice job!

Thank you!

Hershey did really well!

Living in the country means a run to the local supplier takes just about all day. It shouldn't, but there goes the day.

Actually I'm using very little stock. I create more ingots with every casting pour and most of each pour is sprue and runners so I have hidden stock building in the sprue box.

Unfortunately I seem to have an aversion to using up stock. It's kind of a sustainable thing.

Speaking of trivets and hammers.
Ann wants to know how you know her middle name.

Thanks Andy

:headscrat I don't know her middle name? Do I? I have her Social Security number...

I'm impressed, you slogged all the way through this drivel.

I'm depressed, you slogged all the way through this drivel.:bounce:

:wtf: You made it all the way through? That earns you the casting of your choice.

I don't really know but I think magnesium would have made a better show, and not made white smoke. I could be wrong, you know. There is a first time for everything.

The oil tank is pressurized to 5 psi and the oil is bled through a ball valve (now gate valve) into a 1/4" steel tube which goes to the end of the burner tube. It dribbles but does spray pretty good because of the air blast coming around it. Air is set to burn neutral (a little to the more air side of a little smoke). I think it is neutral because I'm getting a clean white furnace. I have a spray nozzle but opted to burn unfiltered oil. That's why I'm staying away from a needle valve; I can open a ball or gate to pass plugs.

There is no shortage of cans but I am continuing to pick up some better aluminum now and then. JB has been my biggest benefactor. I greatly appreciate his generosity.

I modified my oil burner to use a gate valve instead of the ball valve. The ball valve was just too sensitive. And I could only find a 1/2" gate valve. So I've got some big pipes.

When the mail came there were two Vieux Cubes and two gloves!!

Thanks Vladimir!:bowdown::bowdown:

I understand how the cubes are made and I'll up you one when I get the chance. But my wife was very impressed and took them to her sister's house to show off.

Thanks!

An incredible gift, thank you!!

Now I need some help, guys. I need phone service in my shop. I have practically none. My wife can't get hold of me when she needs something (which is getting to be more frequently). I really do not want to run a wire since it is across the driveway and I have not had good luck keeping a wire in service. I used to have a phone extension out there.

I think my options are

1 Install a WiFi repeater with an external antenna so my phone can operate off the house WiFi. Can you do this 100 feet away or do I need a transmitter too?

2 Install an AT&T frequency antenna with inside amplifier. How do you do that?

I need something my wife can use her phone to call my phone. Two way radios and intercoms have to be with you, and she does keep her phone with her. Also, I keep my phone in my pocket and can feel it vibrate. I don't think I could hear anything else.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Andy, when you said phone, I thought...

I realize you meant smart phone and it occurred to me there are a gazillion apps. Suspecting there might be one that mimics a walkie-talkie, I Googled it and they returned more than I expected. There are quite a few and there appears to be many reviews of them.

Powerline Ethernet theoretically can go 300 ft/100 meters, but hopefully you are around 100 ft. This product creates a new wireless network for your shop amd extends the network from the house. Assuming you have a wireless router and an available outlet next to that wireless router (doesn't work well with power strips), you should be able to get a decent amount of bandwidth between the buildings and improve the internet access in an area of your massive shop. You may have to strategically pick a shop outlet that gives you the best wifi coverage. There are other options that may be more expensive and complicated, but try the Amazon option since it can be returned.

You could go with ethernet on both sides of the powerline, but would need another router for the shop. Access points could get better coverage but we may be getting ahead of ourselves. Let me know if you have any questions. Bunch of ways it can be accomplished.

The ATT microcell device needs an internet connection so not sure how effective it would be in your shop without extending the network first. The powerline ethernet assumes you have one meter for electricity to your property. Not sure if it would work across two meters.

Since I don't have cell phone coverage in my shop I don't think a walkie talkie app would help. I would still have no signal. She can dial me on her phone, but my phone won't ring.

I'm sure that would not work. In addition to being on separate meters, the primary power lines are not connected locally, maybe ten miles before they are on a common connection.

Thank you, I need to look more aggressively.

Walkie talkies might be good in general for the farm since they have a range up to 2 miles.

I get good phone service over most of my farm, just not in the metal shop. Where I happen to be most of the time.

Please keep thinking!

Handy: when you first mentioned this communication from your bride in the house to your shop I thought maybe you could engineer a fancy string with a couple of coffee can type ear pieces which might work a bit better than Bob's princess phones.

i'm sure you can figure out something better. Walkee Talkees might be a good idea and i'm sure they have some that would work just fine. I recall using my old Motorola walkee talkees when practicing long drive golf with friends that were 400 yards from me that worked fine and these were only about $100 a pair 15 years ago so there probably are better ones.

now if it's too hard for you to wear a walkee talkee of place one so you can hear it maybe the second or third router getting your WiFi to work better might be something to pursue.

I think they sell phones with very loud rings too for those of us that are a little deaf too if a loud ring might get your attention.

or a security system where your bride can hit a button to set off an alarm or loud buzzer so you'll know she needs you?

good luck and hope you had a great SATURDAY cause I did.

cheers

Yeah, the issue is she's not good with new things and changes. If at all possible I need to keep her using her phone, and it needs to be with her when she falls. Same with me, trying to remember to carry a walky talky around and hearing it when I'm grinding with ear plugs needs to be considered.

WiFi in the shop is what I want. It would also let me connect a shop computer and store security camera images offsite. I've found an exterior repeater which may do the job, so long as i can use two in series to provide a good signal in the shop. I'm sure this will get it to the shop.

All good thoughts. I keep my phone in my pocket on vibrate. I can feel it. For a button she would have to be able to get to the button. But we're back to the same problem. A personal security pendant does not help until I have service in the shop. And she can speed dial me.

I had a little fun today. After casting another trivet I put some old electrical wire in the crucible. This was scrap blue hose.

attachment.php

When I was cleaning up I threw this on the burn pile. It's been laying outside for over a year and looks nasty. Thought I'd see what I could get out of it.

attachment.php

Small ingot has been wire brushed.

I was very pleased. Still have some stuck in the crucible but not all that much slag. Made almost 47 ounces.

attachment.php

Cut the small ingot and it sure is clean inside.

attachment.php

I may have to make a copper hammer just for drill.:lol_hitti

All my melting is by used motor oil now. Free fuel. I put a clip on the gauge and exactly 15 minutes later the pour was done and I had used 5/16" or less.

attachment.php

That equates to about 26 ounces or 13/16 of a quart. Most melts take 1/2 hour or less so that's 1-2/3 quarts. Hmmm, I'm getting almost four melts per oil change. More on a tractor. I may need to start changing transmission fluid on time.

Thanks for stopping by!!

Been following along with your adventures since the beginning Andy. I'm truly envious of your metal melting abilities and equipment and everything that goes along with it !!

Andy: For your wifi problem, it would be worth your time to drop a note to jblnut, as he does automation and large area wifi networking for farm and milking operations, among other things.

PM sent back in regards to the WiFi issue. Thanks cvairwerks for the plug. We'll get something figured out and working for you in that awesome shop of yours. Having internet and access to the wife's needs will be the crowing jewel to an already great space.

Have a look at alert(S.O.S.) pendants. Just a small button hanging around the neck or on the wrist. They’re not expensive anymore and are either wi-fi or GSM networked, which will work practically anywhere with mobile phone coverage. Like lo-jack for your lady. Works with either phone app or service provider similar to a security monitoring service. I have just been looking into them for our in-laws and there are quite a few options now. Another thing to look into are Bluetooth earplugs or noise cancelling earphones. The latter means I can listen to music while I work and take notifications or reject phone calls as needed. I don’t always feel the phone vibrate while walking or using certain tools.

So many reasons to have wi-fi in the workshop. Main reason I bought a twin antenna repeater is to have one antenna outside my metal shed and one inside so I can extend the home network to the backyard using a short antenna cable. You may need a directional antenna to cover the distance between the house and shed though. jblnut is on the case!

Like the look of those copper ingots especially given what you started with! Surprised one of them wasn’t hammer head shaped already.

Not far from iron casting temperatures now either.

Andy the copper melt turned out real nice.

It looks like you are going to have start doing the odd local oil change for people other than your self to keep stocks of fuel up..

Thanks, Steve! It's got me yearning to melt and cast iron.:bounce:

I've got enough friends offering to bring me their change oil it looks like I'll have a surplus.

No phone service is the current holdup, of course. And if she had a pendant it's embarrassing for the emergency services because they can't locate our house.

I really was expecting mostly dross and slag. I was surprised by the amount of copper I got or I would have had a mold ready to go. I love pleasant surprises. :bounce:

Cast iron is just a little more time in the cooker.

Andy has taught me a lot through the stuff he posts and I couldn't be happier to help !!

Very kind words!!

As promised, here's my shop layout. House is to the east.

Handy: I hope JBL helps you figure out a good solution cause he sure knows how to make a farm work. he could probably help you also have your 160 acres full of more cows, chickens and corn than your entire county could eat in a couple years if you wanted him to.

JBL: GOOD LUCK and thanks for helping out one of the good guys here on GJ.

No phone service is the current holdup, of course. And if she had a pendant it's embarrassing for the emergency services because they can't locate our house.

Hmmm... I was going to say long range chordless phones like they use in the factories. Some of the nice ones have intercom and BlueTooth functionality for handsfree use. Each has a repeater/charger base station. But with no phone service at the house it be easier to get VOIP solution and a long range wifi repeater to the house. Most have app integration so you can keep the mobile in your pocket and still be reached.

Otherwise we're getting into EPIRB territory.

Aluminium muffins, iron in the 'cooker'... should I ask what you plan to use for spices?

Wow!

No wonder I keep getting lost. My whole shop fits inside your machine shop. :willy_nil

Andy: Got all the confidence in the world that you and jbl will come up with a good, stable solution for your needs. My wife is disabled also, but the only time I have to worry about her is when our boys are at school and I have to be at our other place, 80+ miles away.

Andy I have been using Panasonic telephone (cordless) for years (two sets so far in fifteen years) They have a built in intercom feature. The last set which I currently use came with three phones. I can ring tone either of them from the other anywhere from any shop and you know how far that is because you have been here. It does not have buzzer but it's old. Newer sets, if they still sell them, may have the vibrate feature. The ring is a distinct ring and it is annoying so you will know it if you hear it. They also have a light come on when call comes in. Perhaps you could carry it in your breast pocket?

Glad you remember me! I heartily recommend retirement.:lol_hitti

Unless I strike oil while doing fall tillage I doubt retirement is in my near future :lol_hitti

It's nice seeing the shop layout on paper. I've seen all the pictures and this brings it all together in my minds eye.

I guess I'll have to start saving some of the wiring I strip out of vehicles for you. I didn't realize you are able to melt copper now too, but from brass to copper there isn't that much of a jump in temp only about 300°F difference. I also have about 20 gallons of used oil and that just keeps building up with all of the driving I've been doing.

Thanks for the kind suggestions on improving my farming operations. I think you're right, I probably don't know enough about farming to maximize the use of my land.

We're making great progress on the phone, BTW.

Once again, being able to use my cell phone is of the greatest utility, if that is possible.

I do have both wired and wireless phone service at the house, I may have not been clear on that. But the emergency services use Google to find addresses and Google misplaces me by three miles. The last time I called for an ambulance I told them that, and asked them to please ask the driver to call my cell phone. He did after he was lost for twenty minutes. The fire department had arrived so one of them drove two miles to intercept the ambulance and lead them here.

Did I say I live in the country?

Spices? Well, I season to taste depending on what's in the pot. With aluminum a little eutectic salt helps with slag and cryolite gives interesting results. I like a shot of phosphor copper with my brass and maybe some coke or ferrosilicon for my iron.

Funny thing, when I added on I started getting a little lost and thought I'd gone to far. Things are settled in now and I wish I had more space.:wtf:

:lol_hitti It's what you can do with it, not how big it is. Any lady can tell you that.

Thanks! I'm still stuck on not trying to remember an additional phone. Not sure how they would do through the metal.

If you strike oil during tillage some pipeline operator is sure to show up soon to claim it. :headscrat

I had posted the shop layout in the summer of 17. That was preliminary but the only change is the addition of the paint booth where the NW parked car is shown. 16 ft ceiling in the lift room, 12 ft in the room to the west, 10 ft and 8 ft in the machine shop, 9 ft in the wood shop and planer room, the rest is 8 ft.

I beg wire. I've been cutting up some of your engine parts, they are great stock metal. Thank you again.

And just another 300 or 400 to do iron. :)

Oil, oooh!:willy_nil I have containers to trade.

Thanks for the visits, guys!!

I never would have thought about the metal walls/roof creating a Faraday cage . I wonder if Plexiglas panels may help in the roof and some walls...
