Nice pick up Shift. I saw that one moments after posted. Sick, parents visiting and staying in-house, a wife who is dubious at best of my vise affliction and that I hardly even use my 404 all added up to no 406. Could've refurbed and flipped of course but already have way too many in line and frankly getting a little tired of the ones that need crates to go somewhere. The good news is you're fairly close so I can just buzz over and see it sometime.

It’s New Holland Blue, but close enough. Lol

If it's just for welding then you probably won't mind getting little bits of blue paint over everything you grab in the vise.

Ask me how I know, lol. First vise I ever had was a Columbian someone had spray bombed red EVERYWHERE. At some point I had to take the jaws off and remove the paint, it was annoying everything would have red flakes on it. And soft stuff they'd become embedded in.

Shift, I'd have sure beat you to that one if it hadn't of been a 3 day drive, one way.:D---But I've already got one of those, and they are nice.---You did real real good my friend.

Thank you gman007, trijeff, and va

I think I would have been almost as excited if the asking price was double what I paid. I can’t remember a better “bargain” on a vise than this one.

Va: If you can make it here in 3 days you’re a more dedicated road tripper than I am. My wife and I once drove from Bar Harbor to Los Angeles in 4 1/2 days. But that trip did involve a couple of hours touring the Corvette museum in Bowling Green after the famous floor collapse.

Most people don't particularly like a larger vise as a user but if it operates as smooth as a raw oyster, a big vise makes a very good user.---JMO.

Glad to see the Columbians finally get some respect by-the-way.

Columbian #608.---Rigid's first cousin.

Was this 1 originally hollow?, do you know which sizes were hollow?

Vise and stand for $75

I was first to respond to a C/L ad for a Reed 406r with stand.
A great big thank you to JZiggy for the tip.
Yeah, I had to drive 60 miles each way but that’s the way it goes sometimes.
This is how it looks after a quick wash down with my little electric pressure washer.
That's a big ol' you suuuuuck Shift! Great pickup.

I got one of those for another member here awhile back and he was happy to get it for $300.

Real nice Shift, is those jaws 6 x 1-1/2 x 5/8 thick with 4" center to center screws? I only thought the Combination vises had replaceable jaws. $75 is defiantly a you **** deal.

Thanks!
The replaceable jaws are inch and a quarter wide and 1/2 inch thick.
I’ll measure the holes later, OK?

Edit: the screw holes are 4 inches apart center to center.

Re: shiftless
You scored big time on that vise, it looks to be in great condition. Is there a date stamp on it?

Thank you Chris, Kevin, and Smitty ,
The stars aligned properly to let me pick that one up at that price.
Thanks once again to jziggy who tipped me off to that deal.

The Prentiss 153 arrived over the weekend and it cleaned up rather nicely. Thanks for the bolt KMS, it fit like a glove

I couldn’t get the masking tape to stick to the jaws. That’s why they’re blue. Lol

Very nice! I think at the rate that your Prentiss collection is growing we might start calling you Prentiss Magnet!

Thanks Gman. Prentiss vises are definitely my favorites. I’m going to check out a vise tomorrow that’s on my top five wish list. It’s not a Prentiss but it’s a beast of a vise. I’ll post up if it comes my way.

I posted some pics of the American Scale 214A vise in the first pic over in the vise info thread. Eagle eye trijeff spotted a Craftsman 5196 lurking in the background and asked for pics, so here you go. She's pretty rusty, but other than the cosmetics doesn't seem to have any other issues.

Both towers were very hollow.---Took exactly 40 lbs. of lead, (Babbitt and car weights), to fill both towers.---608 is around 180 lbs. which is real light for an 8'' vise.---But the Ductile is really good stuff, so they cheated on the material.---I just filled the voids.

Not sure I know what you mean by which sizes were hollow.

She's a beaut!!! That AS is nice too, and I know by that beercan meatball it is an AS handle, but do you think it is a replacement from a larger size since it's sticking out the back of the slide?

I wondered about that screw as well, could be a replacement I suppose. Vise doesn't show any signs of abuse really, seems unlikely the screw would have failed, but who knows how many years later it's a possibility.

Ken
If you can not beat them, kind of join them by may be making deals with them. For example just the other day TJ was commenting about the tiresome effort of building a crate and shipping etc. So it seems he is willing to sell some vises and may be he will give a deal if you agree to local pick up! I also know that Shift does trade vises and he is also fair.

Both vises are fantastic  but I must say that 5196 is something else. I have never even seen any 519x in person and they are definitely at the top of my wish list.

Yep Ken, gman is right ... have 8 or 9 four to six inch vises that are available for you to check out. Shoot me a pm with your email address.

Include me too.

Many of mine are for sale as well.
I have also bought vises from other GJ members. In fact, I drove to Michigan last spring to buy about 10 of ‘em. (Full disclosure...that wasn’t our only reason to make the trip)
I enjoy opportunities to trade or sell at fair prices. No, I won’t sell my 406 for what you guys now know I paid for it. :)
But if you consider all the time some of us spend scouring auction sites, Craigslist, and the hours and gasoline spent on driving around to estate sales and garage sales searching for that elusive “you ****” deal, we are not making close to a decent hourly wage buying and selling vises.

The only way I rationalize the whole deal is recognizing that it’s the “thrill of the hunt”.

:+1:

Shift
“thrill of the hunt” is right on the money just like real hunting!

In many instances those who hunt for most part spend a lot more money for permit/license, gear, guns, ammo, supplies, time off from work and effort than the the game is worth (and that is assuming that they are successful in the first place, as lets be honest more often than not many come back empty handed). So while hunting for many might make no financial sense, the experience, the thrill and the camaraderie is priceless and can not be measured in monetary terms alone!

And like you said the same is true of chasing vises and other antique tools. For most of us, it is all about “thrill of the hunt” rather than making money!

I’m in the process of moving so I got a few vises together for a group photo. Mix of a few German vises with a Italian vise as well but mostly made up of American made iron.

Never mind...my curiosity got the best of me and my search ended up at GJ with examples from you, vises and meatsis. It's a Bonney Rapid Vise Co. vise of Marion Indiana.

So, if your new address gets out and half of your vise collection comes up missing, before you call the police, PM me and I promise to give them back + penalties!
