It's been a busy 2019 for me so far. I've got to go back and catch up on about the last 20 pages of this thread!

I finally made it to the flea today for the first time this year. It's still below freezing and snowing again today. I did manage to bring home a few things.
The dial indicator has some paperwork for Brown and Sharpe, but the gauge is a Starrett. Looks mostly complete in it's heavy steel case.
Also found the empty Thorsen 1/2" drive box with one socket, Bluegrass utility knife and 6" aluminum level, complete midget Makita nut driver set, KD battery strap, myriad of wrenches include OTC, Vlchek Plomb, SK, Mac, Wizard. Sockets include Keystone, SnapOn, Blackhawk, Cornwell. And the bonus 3/8" drive Intestro ratchet.
Not too shabby for a snowy Sunday.

Headed out to an estate sale near me on Friday, ended up being a little late, but was able to snag this SK 3/8" socket set, 2 SK screwdrivers, and a Channel-lock linesman pliers not pictured. All for $25.

Came with a 3/8" fine tooth ratchet No. 45175. Anyone know where I can find the rebuild instructions for this ratchet? I took it apart to grease it and now I can't seem to find the right way to put it back together.

I prowled through two antiques booth stores today, without a purchase. I did, however, spot this harness vise, looking (under gray paint) a lot like the one Lugz bought from St Louis Rick back in November. This one has the lever assembly intact, so I thought I’d post it for reproducing purposes. BTW, this one is marked DOWN!

How do you keep finding these Thorsen boxes? I’m right next to where they were manufactured and you find way more than I do!

I don’t remember the specifics of what was involved when I cleaned and lubed mine but I do remember that it was important to use loctite on the bolt and not to over tighten it. It came out working perfectly. Nice ratchet.

Just picked up this super cool vintage Mac 1/4 or ignition set box off Craigslist for $10. It has one tiny drawer, I love it!

I had troubles with my RHFT SK ratchet as well. It is all depends on how tight the Allen screw is. Too tight and it won't work right.

Got up late this morning. I didn't sleep well the last couple of nights and I guess the body needed some more rest. Anyway, the first thing I saw on Craigslist was an ad for two Stanley planes that was an hour old. Damnit just the luck! A quick call, a text, another call, a return call and I'm on my way to pick them up. They are both in very good condition to be at least 100 years old. The components all appear to be correct for the type. Very little rust on the bodies, the irons had little use and also appear to be correct for the type. The #5 is a type 11 (1910-1918). The #3 looks to be a type 9 with possibly and older iron (1902-1907). Spent about an hour and a half driving round trip. I paid $40 total for the planes. Super happy to get them!

Found this ad for a air compressor for 25 dollars on craigslist. When I got there he asked if I wanted another compressor. So for 25 dollars got 2 speed air air compressors. One is a 17 gallon. The other is a 20 gallon. Only have the one with me. The other is at my brother in laws garage.f0380819d18d93833498ac88270d31a3.jpg

The snow cleared, leaving The Town mostly in good shape for driving. So, off I went. There was a second hand store that is closing and had everything at half off. There I found some Proto LA, Proto Professional, an SK wrench I needed to help fill a set (only the 1/4" to go!) and a long C 8' tape (needs a little go gone). Then I headed to an estate sale that was just a listing, no photos. But they said tools. And boy did they have tools. Tons of Snap-on, Starrett and other top brands. Even a Gerstner top and riser, the 26" model. And he had prices to match. No bargains to be had. After going back and forth with the guy, I ended up with a chisel handle, a 10oz dead blow on its last legs and a pretty nice vintage Armstrong 1/2 ratchet. I love this thing, its like a Proto but twice the teeth. Altogether, I spent $25.

Came across this Indestro Metric set, it was missing the 10mm socket. I looked in the next tray and there is was, got the set and a clean Penncraft 1/4 ratchet for $7 . Dont find many USA made metric sets.
Also found a Wright N-370 3/4" Ratchet for a reasonable price.

I don't post much on this thread, or GJ in general, but I follow this thread like a hawk. I am amazed at what you guys find. Well here is my first post. I had been eyeballing a auto mechanic's tool lot on CL for the last month and couldn't believe no one grabbed it. I finally had time to go this morning and I think I did very well. TONS of tools of EVERY brand imaginable: Snap-On, Blue Point, SK, Matco, Thorsen, Armstrong, Stanley USA, C-Man, Proto, Williams, Mac, etc, etc,. You name it, it's there. They were asking $500 which was a steal in and of itself but I offered $400 and they gladly accepted. I still need to go through it all but here's what I grabbed:

Picked up an old Snappy R12 service cabinet. 80% complete, I'd wager, but for $50 I can't complain. Hopefully I can breathe some life into some of my older cars with my R12 collection.

It is cool. But you guys didn't mention the coolest part. What are the odds that the Grand mfgr who made a clamp with a quick set and release lever is the same Grand who made a vise with the quick set and release lever? They even gave it a clever name: the Quickcet. I don't have one or I'd post a pic. You could search on Grand and "Quickset" (always inevitably spelled wrong) on the GJ Mega Vise thread. I'd make that bet.

EDIT: I take that back. I'd WIN that bet! Check it out. Even the logo - Large "G" and "D" with smaller "RAND" in between - are the same. Pics here. That would be neat to have both the clamp and the vise!
I'm a tad behind on this thread! Some more interesting Grand clamps here https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7061864&highlight=Grand#post7061864

Pretty quiet around here, but managed to make 1 stop on Sat. Couple gallons of trans. fluid, still have the foil seals under the caps, couple qts. syn. oil, bunch of hardware, grease fitting assortment, new Absorber, staples, oil filters, stud remover/installer, weird Snap On valve adj. tool, 7/8" machine wrench, Tweeco ground clamp, and new hose nozzle.

The Kant Twist clamp is a little different than any I have seen before with those round pads. While oiling and freeing it up I realized it can also be used to spread something apart, the arms are cut out on the end to allow this, pretty cool.

Cigar box has a small Craftsman screwdriver, usually pick these up when I see them, somewhat of a consumable. Nice small 4 way screwdriver, SK Wayne ext., Craftsman punch, and a few other assorted goodies. I think it was $20. well spent.

No those are mine. The kits are all mostly complete from what I initially saw.

I started to go through a little bit this morning. Unfortunately we are getting hammered with snow right now in NY and I have to work at 2 pm so I was only able to do a few bins:

Torx drivers, Nut drivers, and 1/4" drive handles in the first two pics. Mostly USA Craftsman but also Allen, Xcelite, and a few other USA brands. More sets of drivers than I could ever imagine to use.

Ratchets in the last pic from left to right: Unknown 3/4" , Fleet, Challenger USA, OTC P-61, Cornwell SR-50, Stanley, unusual RIGID with bent handle, Proto torque wrench, Westward(don't know much about this company), and two junk Taiwanese ratchets.

Wrenches are tomorrow.

These two were interesting. A Bonney RF 23 ratchet type wrench and a Loc Rite Kelsey Hayes Chrysler Motor Corp. Master Tech Award wrench. Does anyone know anything about either?

I didn't know that, interesting. Lots of people don't know that F-clamps spread as well as clamp.

Brake tools and distributor wrenches. Pliers, wire crimpers, cutters, etc.

D42Jeep-there is a number on it but no name. I'll check out the number with Indestro. Thanks.

The Bonney ratchet is from a refrigerator service set.

Loc-Rite refers to the rounded rocking action of that flare opening, patented by Alfred Kavalar and assigned to Kelsey-Hayes in 1964. They also trademarked it in 1964 and placed it on wrenches branded Kelsey-Hayes, Utica, and Bonney, which they owned. It looks to me like they made that particular wrench for Chrysler to give away as an award, probably a set of them if I had to guess.

Correct on the Chrysler master tech- if you earned certain levels of training, Chrysler gave out full tool sets. I have a set of 1/2 drive gold plated sockets and a single wrench. I do have a Mopar branded socket and know they branded tool boxes and tools in the 70’s but don’t know to what extent or how long that was done for. I am wondering if I need to start a thread on Mopar / Chrysler branded tools. I thought someone on here had a tool chest ?

This weekend was my annual trip to Maryland for a bicycle swap meet where I set up as a vendor (and still manage to buy a bunch of stuff). This year I figured I'd hit a few flea markets on the way :)

First stop was an estate sale where I picked up some Craftsman combinations, two Williams wrenches, a little Vise Grip some hammers and some screwdrivers. Plus a 12" B&C adjustable.

I also grabbed a pile of miscellaneous sockets- most are Craftsman, with a healthy pile of SK. Plus some older New Britain? style unmarked sockets.

Next stop was a flea market in Connecticut, wandered about and managed to pull together 3 Vlchek wrenches, A Billings, Barcalo and Penens. Plus another Williams and some more Craftsman. Two sets of pliers- one Proto and one Millers Falls. A crescent awl rounded out the lot.

Sunday at the swap meet I did a lap before the doors opened to the general public- this year there were a surprising number of vendors selling tools- mostly older bicycle specific stuff but I did manage to grab a few Snap On items- a 12" adjustable, 13mm combination and some pliers- plus a couple of allen sockets.

Best of all I sold enough bicycle junk to cover my tool purchases for the weekend!
