3/8" drive?!!! Like Outlaw I'm wondering what that BIG ratchet is? Gotta be 1".
I am thinking the same thing. If that ratchet is 3/8" it is 8" long. That big ratchet is 3 of them ratchets making it 24" long making it a 1" drive. Has to be a 5849.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3061, 3070,

Maybe the pic is making it appear larger that it actually is. Both it and the adapter are 3/4” drive. The ratchet is a 5649 and the adapter is a 5647. Here’s another pic that should help. ed3789b8ed99f3d534ce09f913ba2954.jpg

Proto is pretty common around me. Plomb isn’t near as easy to find but I’ve stockpiled quite a bit over the years. Mainly wrenches though. I don’t come across many plomb sockets at all.

Had time for a Quick run (not many sales yet) before I go to services for my cousin's wife. :(

First up was a never used $2 flat brief case or possibly laptop case. Seems to be high quality and made in Japan. Possibly from japan? :dunno:

Next was $2 Mats for the new to me van (no pics - already in it) and a $3 Toyota jack for the Eagle trailer (a couple these make leveling very easy) And the last stop was a regular, and $2 for a Proto LA Chisel, and the sockets: 2 Wright Impacts, an Indestro and a really old SO

why thank you, sir.
been waiting for for the honor to be bestowed for some time.
was (quite) an effort to act casual when the owner quoted prices for the torque wrench and fuel can.

Did you find those at an estate or garage sale? Nice finds...you definitely earned suckage on those!

Whew, that's a cool big Proto ratchet, Sunset. I had the same reaction as others..."Wait--what?!" Well done!

I had a bunch of things to do today. Tax prep, garage clean-up, laundry, selling my sale finds. Lots of stuff.

So, of course, I abandoned all that and went to two sales.

The first was the opening day of a family run sale, with everything well-arranged and organized. I was among the first wave that went in the door and down into the basement. I was after a few items I saw in the ad pics, and I got most of them.

I made a lap around the basement and brought my box to one of the two guys pricing stuff in the basement. He said "Well, I'll have to get the Expert to price this, but I can write you up." He jotted my stuff down on a notepad, but the Expert was still busy. He said "oh, what do you think?" I replied "I'm thinking ten bucks." "Sounds good to me."

No-name hex-drive socket set, complete with female-drive ratchet and mounting bracket.

Brev Italian bottle cap capper

Two ax heads, a Mann Edge Tool Co 6-lb. fireman ax and a 2-1/2-lb Plumb Victory camp ax, both with decent bits and body parts (toe, heel, beard, ****, eye). The one cheek on the Plumb is deeply corroded, but still usable.

Here's one of the items I was after: a diagonal cross peen hammer. No manufacturer--anyone know more about this type of hammer?

The next stop I almost didn't go to, on account of the distance. But then I remembered I'd have the taxes waiting for me if I went home so I drove on. The pics for this next sale showed piles and piles of stuff in the basement, and since this was the second day, it was a disaster.

e1c93149c42fb0459c547825c1206207.jpg

I shuffled through the debris on the bench and came away with the following:

Craftsman egg beater drill
Ideal strip master wire stripper
Some Fisher chemistry clamps
Hornsby & McKinley meat/bone saw--neat design
Aluminum square colander
Machinery's Handbook, 13th Edition (1946)

126c29a99b8c9b82f01ea8360d5202e8.jpg

I passed on this game (missing a lot of parts) but I figured some of us more seasoned members would get a kick out if the "Hello Muddah, hello Fadduh" reference.

2ccc1bda0582517bf20dbbc5885fd26e.jpg

I also found a London Fog great coat upstairs in my size. I got out of there with my items for $30.

No tools today but I did find these 2 Goodyear tin signs on Offer Up. I'd guess they are from the 80s, they aren't stamped just painted sheet metal.

The belts & hose sign is single sided and appears unused, has original cardboard box. There is a small amount of rust along bottom edge unfortunately, most likely from sitting in water. Some scuffs and scratches but overall good shape. 36" wide × 24" tall.

Credit card sign is double sided, 48" wide × 12" tall. This one shows some use but still nice.

$20/each I don't think was too bad.

Nice stuff guys. I'm very curious as to what that diagonal hammer was used for.

I found the answer! Diagonal cross peens are used for beating hot metal. The diagonal means you can work a hot steel bar from the side at a ...you guessed it...45-degree angle so that your knuckles are not directly over the glowing red metal.

It also allows the blacksmith to have full visibility of the material as he's hammering it. With a traditional cross peen, the handle blocks his view.

I'm glad you cleared that up, but this...

...was your best item! Very jealous.

Thanks! I would have looked right past it if I hadn't seen someone else heft it and show it to his companion. I was surprised when I got to that table and it was still there.

I bought it to flip, but I'm quite impressed with it. Voluminous is an understatement--it's got just about everything I could possibly need to know WRT working on my lathe. However, it's in such good condition I think I'd want a more doggy copy to keep in the shop.

I went to a sale in early February and got the Tecumseh sign for $50. There was an attic above the garage area of the repair shop that was off limits. The guy running the sale said it was packed and too dangerous. I asked him to give the homeowner my#. I lost hope but the owner finally called me 3 weeks ago and was happy to let me and my friend in. We had at it and all was super cheap as the cleanout company was coming in a few days. We got piles of NOS Parts
and other goodies, I put the Briggs and Yard-man sign in my pile and paid around $10 each, the Yard-Man is my favorite.
The homeowner was happy we had interest and he got to tell us about his father. Hearing about his father was an added bonus.

Yes, congrats.

I found a 1938 version last year that looked like that one. It was $4, how much was yours?

Mine was bundled in the whole $30 purchase. I'd put the individual price at about $2. They're going for ten times that on Ebay right now. Your earlier edition would probably be close to the same (10X your purchase price).

Lazy Saturday.

I’m relaxing on my front porch in this beautiful weather, and a friend walks up and says “here I have a gift for you” and hands me this....

We went to an estate sale today in Castro Valley, CA. The company that put it on has historically had rather high prices but yesterday’s finds were so inexpensive I figured that it all evened out. The first picture is all of today finds, the second is the obligatory Barcalo. The next shot is a rough Proto screwdriver and a 4” Proto LA adjustable that I’m keeping. The PowrKraft Phillips driver is decent and the rusty Snap-on is currently bathing in the Evaporust. The Barcalo pliers cleaned up well and have a unique handle pattern.

Had a few good finds today. First sale was the liquidation of a tooling company. They had tons of new old stock S-K, some Blackhawk, Armstrong, and Starrett. Here's what I picked up.

Two S-K 3/8 ratchet rebuild kits (45170)
S-K 9 piece metric hex bit set. (it was in like new condition with shrink wrap still covering most of it. Looks like it's missing one of the larger sizes and the 5mm was missing and replaced with a random SAE bit)
Four S-K screw drivers (The flat head looks like it's the only one that's ever been used)
S-K 7408 hose clamp pliers
S-K 12" adjustable wrench (looks brand new)
S-K 3770 Flex head bent handle 3/8" ratchet (looks brand new)
S-K 40970 1/4 ratchet (looks brand new)
S-K 18mm socket
S-K 4490 swivel 13/16" spark plug socket (brand new)
Armstrong F-70 3/8" thumb ratchet (new)
3 Williams Superrenches
5 MAC SAE Wrenches

I paid $45 plus tax for everything.

46483018275_6e98987736_c.jpg

The only other sale that had anything worthwhile was the farthest away from home. The only two finds were a MAC #2 Phillips and a neat old set of Craftsman needle nose pliers for $1.50 each. I love the old pattern on the handles. Anyone want to take a stab at dating them? (Paging Outlaw...) I'm thinking maybe 40s?

Im off to a great start. Picked up an Ilco NPN100/KM 190 portable key duplicator with a bunch of keys and key cabinet, all for $60. Runs perfect after running a test key. The nice gentleman who i picked it up from is helping clear out a shop that ran from 1920 to 1972 by two brothers and their father. He had an entire section dedicated to NOS chevy parts. Ill have to come back later on because he says he has about 2 more trailers with mechanic tools and machines ranging from the 20's to the early 70's.

The box of keys has a bunch of chevy looking ones too, anyone need a cut chevy key? Lol

Very nice!!

Great finds guys! I have been on a business trip, so aside from a couple of Restores (no luck), I haven't been able to get to any sales. Well, I was at an estate sale today, but that was work, and I don't mix work with play. But, I worked my trip home to stop where I could hit an auto swap in the morning, so we shall see.

With the nice weather I was finally able to work in the garage and start putting stuff away. A couple weeks ago I went to a Craigslist ad for "tools tools tools" looking for a Craftsmans RHFT he had in one of the pictures. It was a retired guy with a workshop shed with bins full of tools. The RHFT was gone and this is what I came out with. The breaker bars are Walden and Wizard. The ratchet is a USA Husky 22202. The little yellow 1/4 drive spinner is Temco from Japan. The needle-nose are Klein, red are XCelite and black are Fuller made in Japan. The rivet gun does not look to have ever been used. The flashlight and reflectors are for the kids.

Great finds. I wish I could come across some finds that everyone always seems to dig up. My local fleamarket was rained out again.

Been going to auctions on a regular basis but haven't posted finds for a while. Yesterday was an estate sale. Picked up some wrenches, Thorsen 1/2 socket set, Park tool box, rolling stool and some hammers. Also bought an aluminum frame workmate for $.50.
