That thing is huge. Looking forward to seeing how it comes together. Did you ever get the welder finished, or did I miss that?

Engine 51 report of brush fire........

So Strouty, which one are you? John Gage or Roy DeSoto?

Yea I know they drove the squad 51 truck....

or being with the times

Lt. Mathew Casey, Lt. Kelly Severide or Chief Wallace Boden?

Good luck with your conversion, I am sure it will come out great.

Now you've really gone and done it. A cool old Boston fire truck and you now have lots of us drooling and jealous. None of us "need" one but we all want one. But I guess I'll just have to settle for living vicariously through watching your project.

Very cool indeed.

I hope I don't disappoint all of you guys, starting to get stressed out that this has to be a really cool project or I may get shunned......

No stress Strout. Lose the fire body and mount the boom is all it needs to be cool. Sure 4wd is better with crazy axles, but any personal rig rocking that cab is nuts!

This is a little guy, it has an 8.3 cummins with 300 HP. I have seen them with 4 to 5 hundred HP Detroit 60 series. Long term, I am pretty sure I will build a heavier duty version, so this now will be my test truck, I figure using it for a couple years will let me know what I want to do in the larger truck.

Awesome, can't wait to watch the build on it. Are you going to keep the restoration on it on this page? Or start a new one for it? I just want to make sure I follow it!

I broke the cordless bandsaw again, this time I am going to order the parts to fix it rather than just half *** it. I am going to try the metal chop saw and see how it works, hopefully I can get all the remaining large copper off the floor. The crappy part is that all my free time has been on days when it is raining and I am not loading and unloading all my copper in the rain.

Fire truck just needed some fluid to get the cab all the way up, also needed to spin the water tube before doing that, oops, broke a headlight. The frame is shorter than I originally was told, I know that I should have measured it myself and not taken the guys word, my bad. It should still work for my purpose, but the rear bed may be even smaller than anticipated now.

I can almost see the floor again, I can stand in front of the tool box without having to worry about pipes rolling out from under my feet. I think there is a bit of the coax that I will save for when I have more time than money, at least I can leave it outside and not worry about it. I just want to free up my shop again!

I keep making more of a mess! I am starting to shuffle things, looks like I should have the floor completely cleaned up in a few hours (I am not moving at full speed, plus I am doing other things as I work.) I also should have the weights for the copper that I have so far, also going to weigh the brass. This will leave the foam core coax, insulated copper wire, aluminum, stainless, bronze, and a bit more of regular steel. I will most likely wait until I start scrapping the rear body on the fire truck before I take any aluminum since there will be a lot more of it at that point.

I got the copper weighed, looks like I have 303 pounds of #1 ($697) and 1379 pounds of #2 ($3,034). Fork lift needs a charge, so I can't finish cleaning up the shop this minute, but I am stoked, with the rest of the stuff I have to prep, this job will exceed my estimates by quite a bit. :) I still have probably 500 pounds of coax at 90 cents a pound, it will add up, then the brass and wire will really top things off. By the time everything is done, I should have more than $5,000 in scrap, plus the job pays $500. Good timing, I am going to need a PTO and hydraulic pump for the fire truck, not to mention the air ride suspension, the driveshafts customized, and all the miscellaneous hoses and fittings to plumb things up.

I don’t think I will need to, the wheelbase should be doable, I need 120” from behind the cab technically, but due to the cab height, I won’t be really using the boom over the front of the truck. I always planned on a small bed versus a large one, so that doesn’t bother me, I would like to have it be 8’ long and the knuckle boom takes up a solid 3’. The only thing I have not decided is if I am going to make it dump or not, kind of leaning towards the not as it seems to short to really need it to dump.

We got the warehouse all cleaned out, now I just have to sort the remaining **** and start taking loads to the scrap yard, there is definitely one more load of trash, I may take that first as I prefer not to have trash hanging around for too long. My trucks and treasures are bad enough, don't need anyone getting confused as to what I am storing. ;)

Thanks CB, still brainstorming on what I am doing. I am excited and nervous all at once. The silly thing is I am already thinking about the "next build", how is that possible????

I haven’t been to a ********** in almost two decades.

Headed to the shop for a bit, late lunch, office work needed to be done. I really want to get a small loaf to the scrap yard in the morning, I figure I can load up the back of the burb then if things go well I may be able to take a larger load in the afternoon on my way home.

Like my Gramp used to tel me, once your see one pair of boobies, you want to see them all. :)

The weather so far has been tough to predict, today it was supposed to rain, so I scheduled office work, no rain. :(

Tomorrow it is supposed to be light rain in the morning, then get better as the day goes, who knows? I am going to take the last load of trash to the dump, then see about getting some scrap turned in.

That load of trash was deceiving, thought it was heavier, but it wasn't, so it was cheaper! Helps the bottom line on the project, I still have a few wooden reels to deal with, will end up with a burn pile someday soon. Now I need to concentrate on getting the good scrap out of the shop, I am also thinking I may take the aluminum portions of the microwave dishes just to get them out of here.

On another note, I bought three flat beds from the local truck body place, so I need to make provisions to haul them with the dump trailer. I am thinking about some heavy square tube across the top of the sides, I would use the stake pockets so the sides were tied together properly, unfortunately I will most likely need to haul one at a time, so three trips for me. :( One of the bodies is questionable if I am going to take it, I want them to lift it up so I can see the bottom, they just couldn't get to it due to the mud.

I am still breaking down the funky stuff, problem is I want to keep more and more of it. :(

Couple of really cool ideas floating around in my head for the stuff, I think it is doable and I can store the stuff without much consequence, plus if I decide not to do the project, the copper and brass is always going to be worth something. Rationalization, that is how I roll. ;)

The good news is that I should be able to get everything to the scrap yard tomorrow afternoon, all in one trip, plus prices have increased a bit, so more money! Looks like I will have enough money for the PTO and pump I need for the new truck, plus enough to get a good start on the rest of it. It is not going to be 4x4, just too much involved and I just want to use the truck, once I have this one built, I can start figuring out what to do for the next one.
