That was a tip that a lot of ripple offered up the last time I got to this point. That is what I started doing last night.

You guys would be so proud of me, I saw a Craigslist ad for a truck that I liked, then I found out it had no rust, cheap price, just needed some work to get it going. I talked myself out of it, i was set to head out the door, had the address and everything. Texted the guy and told him I wasn’t going to be able to make it. I don’t feel bad as I know it will sell quick, he already had three other people to look at it.

I am going to do some work to the maroon burb instead.

I am still learning. I did however list the Blue F350 dump truck for sale on craigslist. I am going to post up a few of the other trucks right now, see if there is any interest or just tire kickers. I want to clean up the yard and get the fleet to a manageable number. My brother thinks that the salvage yard that has some of the parts I need for the knuckle boom project may swap the truck for parts, so I have some options. Regardless, this is a big step in the right direction. I did sell my GF's volvo wagon, so that left today as well. Would like to have the yard respectable before the snow flies, should be able to accomplish that too.

It takes determination. Monday while on a pickup run for a blasting cabinet with my BIL, the guy offered me a couple pieces of dedicated use small equipment components for free. I left without them, got down the road and pulled into a gas station to think on it some more, then went on home without them. Now I am glad I passed on them. They would have just taken up space and would have been hard to sell.

That must have taken a bit of self control. I can remember many times when something was offered for free or I took a package deal, then had to handle all the little things that went with it. Heck, I am doing that right now with all the stuff from the warehouse. All the normal people would have scrapped everything and not saved so much stuff. My GF is really good at talking herself out of things, I am better at talking myself into things. I need to learn from her.

I get your struggle......

One thing that I try to do is consider the total cost of a project, not just the "deal" of the initial purchase... That has helped me to pass on a few "deals" that would really **** the time and space.

I've also been trying to pare back on a few projects so I can focus on what I really want to do. I think having a high level goal goes a long ways towards having purpose and an overall guiding decision making process.

Last year I sold a milling machine that was going to require more work and effort than what I had time to do. Candidly, I don't miss having it sit there...

I had also sold this massive overarm pin router. It worked, but I did not have any projects for it, so it needed to go as well....

I have a band saw that needed a wheel replaced on it....it was a deal....yeah right... I have a box of new parts, bearings and hardware for it, bit have not mustered the effort to put it together.... I have learned that I need to be careful buying projects....

I've also figured out that it it better not to buy something because you might need it some day.... That some day can be a long time in the future.... Meanwhile I end up tripping over it while it sits there....

I am almost working backwards right now, the plan is to not acquire any new projects (still will buy components of existing project), then I am assessing things based on what I want to work on or fix the least. I figure if I try and sell these things it will clear space and produce a little working capital in the process.

We have tried this before... then you go to sleep... and forget the game plan... write it down on a big board so you read it everyday BEFORE you go online and find something new that you can't live without.

I have had a few response to the Craigslist listings, you never know what is going to happen, but sounds like the F350 is sold and some deer fencing that I was going to throw away may be sold too.

I spent yesterday afternoon in the drizzle at a truck graveyard, big commercial trucks, it was fun. I think I found a few gems that I need to acquire for the fire truck project. I will try and get those next week. Today is a bit chilly, almost fall like, kind of nice. I need to put air in one of Clark's front tires, but the valve stem is designed for the other side and there is no real access, looks like it is just an extension, so I am going to attempt to remove it and move the schrader valve, this should allow me to easily air the tire up, I will have to do it to both front tires. Wish me luck!

Guy just left with the three rolls of deer fencing. I paid nothing for them, got $175. I only stored those since last fall and I only moved them twice. Must be some kind of record for me!

So, this is going to be one of those weeks, yesterday my knee was bugging me, this morning I woke up in pain from the way I was sleeping on it. Now I just tweaked my back trying to get to a roll of pex tubing, I was standing on a big cart that is in the middle of the trailer and it moved, when I adjusted it jerked my back, now it hurts to breathe deep.
:(

I am going to get lunch, take some Advil, and see what I can accomplish. At least I feel like I did something today, even if it was minor, it still felt major.

Thanks guys, it hasn't been too bad, at least not after the initial spasm session. A friend of mine came over to try and find a baseplate for his golfball washer, of course he found the coolest thing possible, but I am willing to give it up. I know my GF would be mad if she saw it first, so I guess it is a good thing she didn't see it. Now I need to clean up the shop so I can do a bit of fabrication work too. To top it off, he brought me some scrap copper, lead, and aluminum, so now there is more of a mess! ;)

The ticks are out in force, so far this week I have found 4 crawling on me, I am still feeling things every time I move. I hate that feeling. :(

I need to get the recycling out and move the dumpster around to the less soft area of the side yard. I also called a couple local automotive lift companies to see about selling the mohawk lift, I really think I will be better off spending the money on a set of four column lifts, they keep getting cheaper, the main thing is it will give me the flexibility and capacity that I need to keep my floor plan open and lift all my toys.

Well, guy just showed up to buy the PEX roll I listed, now he wants to buy about a dozen other things, we will see how it works out. The cool thing is he was an electrician, so he liked lots of my things, a lot of it was stuff I didn't care about at all either. At this point, I have someone coming to get the F350 on Saturday, tomorrow someone is picking up a ladder I listed today and as I said, looks like I sold a bunch more stuff to the electrician.

I think I like the idea of getting rid of things, honestly, I had not really done much with general things on Craigslist, apparently I should have been doing this all along. Maybe I could actually do some buying and selling, with more emphasis on the selling end for a change.

Next issue is cameras, I need to get some cameras ASAP, if people are coming here, last thing I want is someone coming back when I am not here. I know it would make me feel better, my buddy suggested the blink cameras.

I have the blink cameras INSIDE my house. I want the outside ones now too. I had a street view camera but it was INSIDE a birdhouse on a tree … and got squirrelled I think... can't find the birdhouse or camera. It was stand alone as a backup... I had to pull the camera to view the pictures. It had the advantage of nailing every license plate of every vehicle that came to the end of my street.

I also have two different live camera systems in my garage (single view each)… one points at the side door... the other points at my triple stack of tool boxes. Again... I have a still only camera above the breaker panel … as a backup.

I got the indoor blink cameras when they were first released a bunch of years ago. good quality... simple to setup. Rarely have issues connecting to them. But these cameras are in the house proper... not meant to guard my tools... but my other valuables (Mrs Pines)(Cats)(Label Makers)

Definitely need cameras if you're selling stuff at your place. I usually try to meet people somewhere but for small dollar items or large items it's just not feasible.

Last few items I sold on CL, the first replies were scammers. Relatively small dollar things at that. But I sell everything from my shop, rather than home, and have never had any issues with people coming back when I am not there.

That issue has been my biggest one about selling things. Not wanting tons of people crawling around my property.

Hey why weren't you on that TV show, Down East Dickering they had on a few years ago? Maybe they could revive that show with you in mind? btw is that sale/trade magazine Uncle Henry's even still printed?

Seriously I am glad to hear that you are able to clean/straighten up your shop and make a few bucks to fund the more important projects.

There is a guy who works on old LAnd Rovers who had someone come on his property and take the 'cat flap' door (the liftgate that goes with a tailgate on a series Rover) off of a Rover he had posted about parting out. He has cameras but they were either very lucky or they knew where to park, so that their license plate couldn't be read and he couldn't make out his face at all.

Stroudy - great running into you today!

I always meet up at our local supermarket which is right across the street from the police department. I always mention that when I'm making arrangements to meet people to sell small things that I have listed on CL.

But yes, the bigger items, they have to stop by my place, I'm never thrilled about that but so far everyone has seemed ok.

I feel much better meeting people from private facebook sales groups or Nextdoor so at least if something happens you know who they are and can give their info to the police.

I agree craigslist can have its issues, ebay does as well, generally when you are selling certain types of items, you get certain types of people. As for the scammers, most just say do you have the "title of ad" still? I just delete anything that doesn't have a normal sounding question. I also had plenty of text scammers, but they are easily blocked. One sent me a text asking me to email them, do people really fall for that ****?

I had inquired about an item and it turns out it was LaneRover's ad, got to have a quick tour and chat of his house, as always good to see you!

I ordered some jack stands and a new jack from Zoro, they have a 25% off flash sale going on, so it saved me some serious money, of course that also means I spent some serious money, but I will be using the new stands and jack for the fire truck project.

I listed a step ladder for sale, the ad said I wouldn't tell anyone that I knew they were going to use the top step, I had a couple people asking me if they could come over and try out the top step, at least people still have a sense of humor. ;)

Strouty,

I'm catching up with your latest endeavors.

It's fun to see the ebb and flow of stuff.

Me? I've solved that problem.

I have my house and yard so full of stuff, that I couldn't bring one more thing in here......even of I wanted to.

Don't lie Bill, there is always room for something else. ;)

I know what you mean, I am at the point that I wish I hadn't saved a lot of the stuff that I have saved, I tried to toss something earlier today, it was literally in the scrap bin. I looked at it again and removed it from the bin, then I couldn't figure out where to put it, so now it is in the middle of things, making a mess again.

One of my ebay items arrived yesterday, got to open it up this afternoon, it is a jacobs collet chuck, the seller had best offer, I made an offer, they declined, I made another, they accepted. I told them that I only needed the chuck, as I already had the collets, but they wouldn't separate them. Well the chuck sounds like the bearings are gone, literally sounds like a bearing with sand in it. I contacted them, told them about the issue and being polite, I asked them how they would like to handle this. The response was:

"Hello,

You’ve got, after bargaining, everything for $150 less than the selling price. Now, it seems as your intention is to bargain more, to get more discount by claiming that something is not working. I am sorry, but it really looks as a scam on your part as a buyer. Everything was in a good, working condition.
If you needed just a chuck why did not you buy it from someone who was selling just a chuck?!
Will gladly sell it to someone else for the price it worth - $600.
I would like to handle it by having all items back."

My response was "You should look at someone's feedback before calling them a scammer"

Anyways, the collets are worth a decent amount, the chuck may be rebuildable, but I can't find any info on it yet. I am thinking that I will keep the item, resell the collets, try and fix the chuck all so I can leave negative feedback. I can tell you one thing, if I return it, I am not paying return shipping to a seller with a jerky attitude like that. I bought another one, cost me more money, but seems to be from a more knowledgable seller, at least they sell lots of tooling. Fingers crossed the next one will be in better shape, I think I will wait and see what the next one sounds like, I may end up learning that these don't sound like a normal chuck. Although I have a different version of it and it doesn't have any grinding feel/noise when you turn it either direction.

I might have been more kind as the seller but the end result with me as the seller... yea send it back to me... i will split the actual postage for the return, sorry for problem...

My thing would be... I don't want you to keep it if you're not happy with it. Split the return because you already haggled me... then again... I dont ever sell with make an offer

With best offer, the seller doesn't have to take it, once they do, that is the price. I always ask how they would like to handle things when something is what I consider SNAD, I have had about ten out of a thousand transactions that go down like this, then I have had another ten that were total BS, seller sold a polished turd and had no business describing it any other way than for parts. Sometimes a seller will offer a partial refund, other times they want the item back, if I just want to return something, I am blunt about it. If the guy offered some money off, I would probably take it and figure I can try and fix the chuck, that is the only reason I asked how they wanted to handle it. I just didn't like the you are a scammer vibe, kind of sets me off as I buy and sell on ebay and try to handle myself the way I would want to be treated. How hard would it have been for the seller to say "don't worry, I will start the return process and you can send the item back." I had one item that a seller refunded me all the money and told me to toss the item, it was still usable for parts, but they didn't care. It never hurts to ask is my motto. In the end, maybe I am the jerk and don't realize it, at least I am a happy jerk. ;)
