You did, fortunately for the ladies well being the concrete had cured enough that she didn't leave a foot print. I just shake my head at how some people are just totally oblivious to the obvious. You just can't fix stupid.

Betty White has the answer...

I literally laughed out loud when I read this headline, must have been a slow news day

Spent a couple hours power washing the drive to get the residue left from the concrete work off and moved everything back outside. The 1947 coke machine is a recent addition. It will be a summer time only display. I need to find some time to touch up the paint on the bottom of the wall sooner than later.

Joe,

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING looks great! You should feel a great feeling of accomplishment and preservation for future generations to learn from.

From my point of view, you have gone above and beyond to include everything that is "period correct" for the times.

Now next big question is, is there a way via an Iowa state or local historical society for you to be able to leverage or get some benefit from your efforts. In other words, since doing this, is there a way for you to get some kind of state property tax breaks if your place was put on a historical register or something like that?

I think it is worth investigating, at the very least from a local landmark perspective.

Great job in the signs and the concrete work. Will that design withstand strong winds?

It shouldn't be an issue. It has a 24 inch diameter, 5 foot deep footer with j bolts embedded in the concrete.

"New Flood Light Station" with souvenirs!
Do you know what the handouts were? Great job!

Its hard to say, nothing was documented.

Its interesting you bring up the national historic registry, about 20 years ago when the hotel and surrounding building were being restored. The local historic commission moved forward with basically listing the majority of the historic downtown buildings on the registry. During that process a handful of other buildings were identified with close proximity to the 2nd street corridor
The station was identified as a qualifying property, but nothing ever moved forward with placing it on the registry for whatever reason. I was literally just reading through the 80+ page summery last night. It is something I'm going to have a discussion with the historic commission about to see what the process of registering it entails.

Be careful with that, my grandparents were going to do that with their house. Tax break, little bronze plaque out front... and then approval from the historical society for any repairs or upgrades. Just be sure to do your homework first.

I will second this caution. Historical registration is used to keep things historically accurate, and are not (generally) a benefit to the property owner. In fact, most of the time it is a huge burden to the property owner.

Also historical status means all the outside decorations have to be maintained and they own them not you.
If something was to happen and you need to sell you may have to get ok to sell your property or get a lawyer involved at your expense.

Make sure you notify your insurance company if they put your structure on the historical registry. Any thing happens, and the rebuild has to be back to historical specs. Premiums could go wild on the title holder.

After reading the comments about the historical registry, it only strengthens my belief in small town Iowa. Like I said before pretty much our entire downtown is on the historical registry and I don't see any of the issues mentioned going on here. Buildings are bought, sold and renovated all the time without issue. The historical registry is looked at more as recognition than a burden.

Pulled the '53 out to rinse the dust off and grabbed a few pics. It's getting closer...still need to bodywork and paint the grill and get the interior back in it. The end is in sight

Car looks at home in front of station.
I noticed you have the same Coke machine that I do. 6b72af0b9a33d8fadc6832c9a485fc2a.jpg
Sorry for slim view. Where yours has silver section at the dispenser door, did you do that or is that the way it came? Mine is on the resto project list.

Yeah, its a Vendo 83. The first 2 years (46&47) had the aluminum panel across the front. From what little I've read they made the machine from 1946 to 1955.

A bit of a picture overload. I upgraded to a new Nikon DSLR camera and one of the benefits is with a wide lense it captures the office better than I can with my cell phone camera.
