Socket arrived for wartime 3/8 set. Thanks don! moved it in with the old toolchest I picked up and the 43? Or so service cart.

I’m glad that it will get your set closer to complete. The S-K 3/8” drive wartime tools are less common than the 1/4” and 1/2” drive.
I found some fairly rare stuff at the Tahoe flea today. Two Chrome Alloy (Brazil) 3/8” drive sockets, a S-K Chrome early socket along with a wartime DBE wrench.

Here's some more pictures. The toolbox is full of SK, Craftsman, and None Better. There's also easy outs, Allen wrenches, and taps and dies. I found two Snap On 1/2 drive Allen heads in 1/2 and 5/8. I forgot about the S-K Wayne I just bought. I know have one 42470 from every era starting from 1950. No beaver tails though.

Here’s a couple pics of my two SK boxes.

aa298d5733a78edfa3838bda0c5e536f.jpg963a0e5e535a4e7227687c9c2c9bb8ed.jpg

Found this box a year or so ago. Looks similar to two previously posted, but with decal instead of badge, flat front drawers, and a different latch. I know catalog references are scarce, but any idea what would have been in this/the two later boxes?

Looks like someone was pretty rough with it. Most of the drawers are bent up, and the top doesn't close. Luckily there was a piece of cardboard wedged in the lid that looks like it saved the decal from most of the grime and abrasion. Thinking about repainting it (but not touching the inside lid). Thoughts? The PO's paint is pretty thick in places.

It is definitely worth restoring. The wartime toolboxes with the decals are much more rare than the postwar boxes with the riveted on labels. The challenge will be to try to duplicate the finish on the inside of the lid.

Looking at this SK socket set, is this set complete?....or is it missing a couple things?

I tried researching the part number on the inside label (#60632) but really no luck since all that shows up are other SK sets with the same part number. :headscrat

The part number on the 1/4" driver clearly shows #40954.

Have any idea more or less what year(s) this set was produced?

Thanks to all who post. :)SK socke set with driver.jpg

Thanks for the info r_olson_06....

That particular set was listed on Ebay for $19.95 and I was able to negotiate the price down to $14.00 to purchase it. I suspected that it wasn't a totally complete set but still purchased it anyway.

I already had previously purchased a NOS (metric) SK socket set complete, that I had found, from a hardware store about a month or so ago
( see post #46713 https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/...59#post7811959 )
but had been looking specifically for an SK 1/4" driver and well happen to find the one pictured in my first post.

I wanted it because it appears to be in practically brand new condition and of course it came with the metal box and some SK sockets so I went for it.

Then I did a bit more research and found out exactly what the entire kit part number is. It's a 13 piece set, as well as what the kit should contain (the socket sizes are SAE).

The following is what the kit should have as well as a picture of it.

Sherman-Klove, SK, S-K Tools, S-K Wayne

Had this pair of Chrome Alloy sockets follow me home yesterday. They cleaned up pretty well. I haven't seen the 11/16" 8pt socket before.

Here are a few. The 1/2 is oddly 3/8 drive

I would be willing to bet that it started out 1/2” drive but has been abused until the opening is the next size down. All of my 3/8” drive Chrome Alloy sockets greatly resemble their S-K counterparts while all of the knurled sockets are 1/2” drive. The top three sockets in the second picture are marked Western Giant along with Chrome Alloy. The third picture adds in some 1/4” drive tools and the fourth adds in some 3/4” drive Chrome Alloy tools.

I agree. I have never seen one as a Knurled base. Did we ever figure out why they didn't knurl just that size?

Here is a 1 7/16 chrome alloy 3/4 drive. Was surprised to find this one as I rarely come across any really old sk 3/4 stuff much less the chrome alloy.

Does the chrome alloy marking also show up on wrenches as well or was it reserved for the sockets?

There is some wrench marked so but I don't think they are the company just a forging technique. I have seen a fair amount of Tiger DBEs that should be from the same era.

I was very very lucky today, my fleamarket finds includes a 1/2 S-K socket set, missing only the 3/4", replaced with a 6point MAC. The best part, it's 4th generation from the late '50s.It has the rounded edge, the chrome plating, the knurling and recesses. I was hoping to find even the odd one, instead I found a almost full set. These are truly nice sockets. In the tray were the remains of a 3/8" set as well as some Snap-On spark plug sockets without their rubbers. A Pennes 13/16 deep. The Snap-On 1/4" 3/8drive Allen alone is likely worth the $25 CDN I paid.

This begs the question was it a brand? I don't think it was, as chrome alloy marked tools were sold under a number of brands.

I have a Fulton 1/2" socket set that was my dads. AA states that S-K manufactured the set and was sold thru Sears. I'm not sure how rare the set is. Any thoughts or more info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Since a lot of S-K ‘s business in the early days was contract work, the tools were mostly unmarked. Other than the Fulton marking on the box, are the tools manufacturer marked other than the sizes and the punch marks on either side of the size markings? I think those same drive tools and sockets were sold as S-K and many other brands. I have a set very similar to yours but no box. See post #1411

Thanks for the info on the Fulton set I posted. That was the set that started this interest in old tools for me last year. I've had the bug ever since and picked up a few nice items but nothing compared to some of the collections I have seen on here. Being a newbie it's hard knowing what to buy,if it's a good price, and what to stay away from. Thanks for the help. Bob K.

Seek and ye shall find. My interest in older S-K was piqued by round nosed sockets 1/2" drive of the '50s.I knew S-K were good. At the fleamarket I was searching for a even just a single one to look at, instead I found a almost complete 1/2" drive set, missing just the 3/4". A late '50s, with the ball dimples, no less. These are highly usable sockets . I loath the generic Taiwanese sockets or their Chinese clones, I'm sure they are decent enough, of the new Craftsman, Stanley, Gearwrench, etc.

I have a SK catalog from 1940. This is the 4010 set from the catalog. The tool box is a little different, but the rest should be the same. $80 for the set in 1940.

That price is what caught my attention, that was probably a couple weeks pay back then. People always complain how expensive quality american tools are today, but i think they've always been expensive, people just didnt have access to cheaper options before the internet so they just sucked it up and paid the money for tools that lasted a couple lifetimes. This is also probably why older guys also treated their tools like a fine firearm.

Yeah, guys now have a hard time wrapping their heads around the concept that buying good tools is painful. Quality costs time and effort, in short, money. I'm sure that S-K socket set has been worked these last 60 years. The drive ends have the subtle impact tracks. If you were an accountant instead of a wrench puller, you could say that was cost effective.

I found this little beauty at an estate sale this morning at 50% off.

Anyone know what tools would have been in this box and the time period it was available?

Thanks!
