Andy, nice touch with the QST e-mail address.

Thank you! I'm surprised I only have six orders. If anyone wants one, no charge, email me your name and address to

[email protected]

That goes for international orders too.

Nice work on the QST casting Andy.. Some day I will make a forge and a furnace..

It is a lot of fun. You just need to start.

The casting looks great Andy.

Thank you!

Thank you! I thought the video was a bit boring (and I didn't even drill anything)

Well, that's one of us.:bounce:

Try to tell my son that. He's afraid he'll catch some kind of disability, like not being able to leave an inviting statement alone.

Maybe he already has that.

Glad you like it. They had to be big enough to cast and see the lettering. About 1/2" thick and 6" long. They are actually 12 mm thick.

I poured another one this morning to test pattern modifications. This one pulled better but still had some sand damage so I made some more refinements.

Looks great Andy. Steve would be proud.

Thank you, Bobby.

Wow, more great casting work. Fun to see this happening.

Thanks! It's fun to do too!

Email sent and donation made to Goulburn Valley Hospice Care.

Thanks, Mat. That makes me feel good.

Ouch ow ow. My head 26 minutes of arithmetic. You are making my head hurt. :( :lol_hitti

Great video even with all the math. It's amazing what can be figured out with just a few numbers.

Glen.

Thanks Glen! The improvement with the arithmetic seems subtle but when it makes a visible difference it is gratifying.

Started on a match plate today. Orders are up to 14 so maybe we'll have some to make yet.

With a match plate I need a new spin trap pattern. Once I glue it on I can't use it for other jobs.

attachment.php

Made a new feed riser for the same reason.

Made a board to fit in my flask I altered to take a cheek. Then laid out the patterns on it.

attachment.php

Drew outlines around the cope side patterns. Drilled lineup holes for the reverse. Found the center of the feed riser.

attachment.php

Drilled that last hole and flipped the board, lined up the primary pattern and drew the outline. Then placed the drag patterns, including 3D printed recessed words.

attachment.php

Drew those outlines.

attachment.php

Carefully offset a fence and routed grooves for the 3D printing.

attachment.php

Letter patterns set in nicely. They are flush.

attachment.php

This will make the lettering engraved in the back of the emblem.

Continuing with the match plate. Drilled mounting holes for the feed riser and the spin trap.

attachment.php

Located everything then drilled for a pin to set the sprue on. The sprue will have to pull from the top so it can't be glued to the match plate.

attachment.php

Cope side ready to go.

You had me at match plate Andy! Signs of things getting serious in the workshop. Serious quality shed time.

Cast badges look great.

If it helps, I believe you can get object volume and object surface area calculated in Fusion360 and add them in as a workspace template so you have them for all your 3D print designs. Not that I mind breaking out the piece of paper and pencil every now and then. Good to have a little mental lubricant every now and then.

Hi Andy,
Well, I would love one but I don't think it's fair to you to bear all the costs...just me maybe but , at the end of the day you are the backbone of provision for anything "we" donate to the hospice ? Can I maybe pay ( at a minimum) your costs, then also donate to the hospice ?

Kind regards,
Greg

Andy, your casting process has always been fascinating to watch but it seems your skills are increasing exponentially.

The hammer you sent me still has pride of place in the shed and gets regular use.

You aren't fooling me Don. I see the stuff you do. I keep trying to figure out when you are painting over tape and when you aren't. You sure get that little bit of logic figured out before you ever strip and prime.

It is great fun! Glad you like the badges, time to order one.

The majority of my casting is from wooden patterns or original parts. I'm concerned Fusion360 will give me the wrong answer. For instance, the face of the QST could actually have double the area of the projection. 5mm away from the face the sand has no idea the lettering is there. All the heat loss is fuzzy at that point, and the time to cool is based on heat loss. I would not model an Acme thread screw as a thread but as a cylinder to estimate the surface area for cooling. Cooling fins work great in air and other fluids, not so much in non fluid media. Even in air the wrong cooling fin design can act as an insulator. So in this case I believe sloppy math is the most accurate.:lol_hitti

My gift to you to honor Steve, Greg. You can honor him by making a donation. JB has provided plenty of aluminum and the fuel is free. Postage is not much, so if you feel the need to contribute more do it to the Hospice. It is a very worthy cause.

Please don't let the fact it is a gift deter you from getting one.

Just send your name and address to [email protected] and I'll be pleased to get you on my list.

Wow Andy!

Well, thanks, Bret!!:bounce:

Is this the best link for a donation:

Great question.

Andy, I wanted to make a donation to honor Stephen but wasn't crazy about mailing a check. A more modern way is to go to Xoom (a subsidiary of Paypal), select Australia and login from there to your Paypal account. Here's a link to get you there:

https://www.xoom.com/australia/send-money

There is a $4.99 transaction fee but that's probably cheaper than what my bank would charge for a money order in Australian currency.

Once you decide how much to send, you'll need the following information:

Bank: ANZ Bank
Account Name: Goulburn Valley Hospice Care Service
BSB: 013 805
Account Number: 4976 37858

First Name: Administrator
Last Name: Goulburn Valley Hospice Care Service
Street: 102 Balaclava Road
Town: Shepparton
State: Victoria
Post Code: 3630

If you want follow-up, include this e-mail address in the form:

[email protected]

I will let you know if this works or is an epic fail and I've sent another donation to my Nigerian Prince.

As I posted on the youtube video, you did a fantastic explaining the Chvorinov principle(?) I was a math major in college and now that I'm a little older I felt like Bob Heine said after watching it. You made it look pretty simple, for a tedious situation. Thanks!

Thanks Bob, that looks like a good option.

Alternatively, if you'd prefer to save the $4.99 fee (or pass it in to the Hospice), you could PayPal the money to me (or likely any other willing Australian here) and I can do the bank transfer.

PM me if there's any interest in doing it that way.

I hope we don't have the same Nigerian Prince. You don't think he's two timing me, do you?

Thanks for doing the legwork. I' glad I didn't have to.

Also it looks like Mat has volunteered to accept PayPal, that would be the cheap way.

Andy is a perfectly made emblem.

Thanks, Vladimir. I hope to see your request on [email protected] soon.

The match plate is working great. I did two in one pour, then three molds in one pour yesterday morning.

Yeah, I ran out of sand or could have done five.
Guess you need to go pound more sand tomorrow? ;)

I may opt for the PayPal option...don't want to put my name on the list until I'm certain a donation will go through.

I've been busy, and away travelling to inter state branches, and stuff..... But on your thread people are talking about "donations". I can't find the specific post, so please enlighten me, and I'll willingly donate (as a cancer survivor it just tugs at my heart).

I also have one of Steve's Ford signs that he cut out. And I'm going to get a framer to put that together with your forging, and Gazza's sign and put that up somewhere. I only met Steve once, but it was a great afternoon. And we had many long conversations on the phone (especially after he was first diagnosed and the treatment meant he was losing his voice, which, with my chemo enhanced deafness, made the calls very interesting).

The only other things I have mounted are signed things from great racing car drivers - Jackie Stewart, Mark Webber, and some Australian Supercar drivers etc, and my Grandfather's war medals and badges (and a pencil drawing of him), but this will be joining them.

Great! My plan is to collect emails of those interested at

[email protected]

I think price should be optional. No reason to limit someone who does not have the funds. After a couple of suggestions Andrew and the Church family suggests donations to Goulburn Valley Hospice Care, in appreciation for the great care they gave to Steve. I agree wholeheartedly. It takes me about an hour to make one so I suggest an hour of your rate of pay but that is just a suggestion.

Funny how little things hamper us.

Looking good of course, regardless.

Properly prepared green sand, of course.:bounce:

I've been told to go pound sand all my life. You're not getting a virgin.

PayPal will be the easiest. But I know nothing of the donations, that's between you and Steve. So get your name on the list before the price goes up.

It is a fantastic forum. A little service for a friend is never a chore.

Those emblems look outstanding Andy! I am sure that Steve is looking down and smiling..

Thank you! I hope so, but then again, I always believe if one is in heaven being able to witness the things going on down here would for the most part bring sadness. I suspect he's too busy with his heavenly shed to be concerned over us.

Wow, excellent details on your part.

Thanks, Mate!

I have 12 in process right now, one finished and 11 ready for final cleanup.

Andy,

What more can I say than thank you for your input into the memorial to the memory of a very special man, friend and mentor to many.

I think all of us who were touched in various ways by Steve, I got a parcel and letter, including descriptions in his thorough way, are even more comforted by the “work” you are doing in his memory.

Just looking at your growing pile of plaques makes me smile, because I have no doubt that Steve would be humbled by the respect and love shown on this forum by this Brotherhood.

Very nice to see how far you have come on this casting thing. I remember reading along when you first started figuring things out and the things you were making. Now, you do this with great confidence. Knowledge is power.
