Sears has reportedly stopped taking American Express cards recently. :eek2:

This is a personal annoyance for me, as that was actually how I did any in-person OOP spending at Sears for the last several years, slowly using up an AmEx gift card I had set aside for that. I'm down to a small amount of money on it and can just spend it somewhere else, but ugh.

hmm...i got a text earlier from kmart and it said to use FIREWORKS for 15% off. but their site is only allowing 10%. anyone else get the same text?

EDIT: i think the text was just poorly worded. looks like 15% applies to clothing only

What’s replacing the mower displays? More mattresses or $1.00 store junk?

I took another peek when picking up an order today.

They were originally just moving other lawn equipment (e.g. trimmers) into the empty spaces. That meant creating empty spaces along the wall where the trimmers were originally.

Some supervisor must have finally gotten the idea to set up some large patio stuff in that area, and the trimmers and stuff was returned to the wall area.

All the hometowns I visited this has been the case for awhile. I always liked using Amex there because I would be better covered when Sears did their usual and messed up my order. Makes sense they would stop taking it. However most MasterCard has very good customer protection so I'll just switch over to that

It's been like that at Kmart since well before the bankruptcy, according to gripes on SD over the last couple years. They're infamous for filling shelves all around the store with individual plastic storage totes, and in sections where the shelves are too small for that (e.g. health/beauty), spreading out individual products with a couple feet of completely empty shelf between them.

I agree, but I think that depends on the store. I have been in three different Kmarts and two Sears in the last month and all were different. Midland, MI, is well stocked and organized. Clio is a close second and Marshall, MI, at third despite being a top twenty store. Not too many bins taking up extra shelf space but they all have brought their garden center inside. The Portage, MI, Sears lower level is doubling up on a lot of items to make it look full; there is a toy section downstairs and the outdoor furniture is taking up more and more space while the outdoor power equipment is shrinking but a fifty minute drive north to the Grandville, MI, store and it is much more stocked. I understand why the Portage store is struggling to fill space, it is a HUGE, two-story store.

Points system is completely down this evening 6/25, since around 6pm CT. Can't use points at all online or in-store, and can't check balances/expirations.

Update: Problems appear to be PARTIALLY resolved as of around 11am CT 6/26 - can see points now, but not spend them yet.

Update 2: Points usage has been broken for over 24 hours now.
There's a banner on the sears.com homepage that went up some time earlier today, saying "Our delivery scheduling and points program are temporarily down. WE'LL BE UP AND RUNNING SOON!" And when you move your mouse over it, it adds, "We apologize for any inconvenience."
And on kmart.com, the banner says "KEEP FILLING THAT CART! We'll have our delivery scheduling and points program back up soon!"
Someone on SD says their Kmart was also unable to process credit/debit card payments today, don't know how widespread that problem is.

I am glad I used up the little points I had before they expire. Bought CF multi-tool for the kid.

I went to the local sears (westland) and tried to pickup some orders i had waiting for me only to find their entire computer system in the store was down. The guy in merchandise pickup knows me and holds stuff there indefinitely but only was able to find one of my sockets. What a ***********, but it's sears, standard operating procedure...

Let's just hope they don't admit they had a security breach, and we're all forced to get new credit cards...again. :rolleyes2

There was literally zero physical security in the store, I walked right into the back stock and meeting room/time clock areas and wandered around until i found someone who paged the pickup employee. Pickup computer had a big hand written "out of order" sign on it. Fastest way to get helped is to wander where you aren't supposed to be....

Interesting. I was in an Ace Hardware yesterday and they couldn't process credit cards either and had signs out stating that they could only accept cash at this time.

Standard operating procedure for sure. I will be visiting the Saginaw store later today so hopefully they get their system back up and running as I have over $70 to spend by tomorrow. How much do you want to bet we'll get the big :thefinger if our points expire during this outage?

This is kinda annoying... I have bookmarks to different places at Sears.com, and just find out my bookmarks are not working anymore. It is showing Proxy Error.

I can still go to Sears.com and browse around.

FWIW, my massive list of saved product links (everything I've bought from Sears in the last few years, and everything I'm thinking about buying) seems to be fine, just checked a couple.

I had trouble with some of my Sears bookmarks earlier, but they appear to be working now.

I just tried using the coupon code and got a message said code used too many times cant use.

How many times have you used the code already?

I haven't ordered anything this week. Just gave it a try on a random item, and the code works fine. Tried the code on the vise, and also had success.

A lot of tool items have gone back to regular price.

Feels like they're not even trying this week, and the 4th of July is approaching.
I guess they could be lazy, and just relying on that FIREWORKS code thru 7/6.

Or maybe they're all stressed out after last week's screw-ups, and taking a break.

First time i tried to use it sorta confused me.

If they're counting on that code to bring in customers, and it randomly doesn't work for some customers even on items that others can use it on, that's not a good sign, lol.

And yet, could you possibly dream up a marketing plan that more Sears than that?

You must've had a lot of points. ;) For everyone else, the price right now is $70, -10% = $63 when you can use the coupon code.

I do have a lot of points saved up. For one week the next two months there will be a time when I have $68 with all the 100% cashback in points deals from prior deals. It has paid for nearly all of the plants in my vegetable garden and 45 bags of mulch. All told, I have $40-ish spent on all the plants, garden accessories, and mulch from Kmart.

Oh, the FIREWORKS code worked for me a few times so to see it not working is odd. I do know that it does exclude some products, mostly anything that is already on sale.

I wouldn't want to suggest worse plans, they'd probably actually take that suggestion. :eek2:

Wow, congrats. Buy an appliance (or whatever you got), get a whole garden almost free. Definitely helps to have a nearby Kmart for more options. I have been hearing they're cutting back a lot in the garden department, so it's good that you got that stuff sooner rather than later.

Well since my dad and I both moved into new houses within a month, we both bought items on my account which really benefited me with the windfall of points.

The garden center at the Kmart I usually shop at has mostly moved into the old electronics department. Instead of filling shelves with fillers, this was a pretty good move to actually make the store look stocked with products. The live plants were moved outside near the main entrance and all pallets of mulch, soils, and the like, line the sidewalk in front of the store. Two weeks ago I went to the store and the parking lot was freshly paved and the signage was being upgraded and new LEDs to replace the neon tubes. Maybe there is hope for this store. Oh, there is still a Little Caesars and pharmacy in this store...

Wow! That might be the second-healthiest Kmart still in existence! (The #1 Kmart is in Guam - article from 2011, but it's still going strong.)

The local Kmart stores around me are gone, but one of their last actions was to fill the empty electronics departments with appliances and mattresses.

Does your store have a separate section for the appliances and mattresses? Or were they all removed from the store?

A Kmart in a neighboring county upgraded their sign to LED's, so I also thought it was safe. A few months later it appeared on the liquidation list.

As for the parking lot, do you know who is responsible for the upkeep? It may have been repaved by the landlord, without Kmart (Transform Co) putting any money into it.

I once asked a local there for directions to the nearest Walmart, and I ended up at Kmart.

My Local Kmart has 6-8 appliances against the wall Clothes washer and refrigerators not sure about mattresses. Never looked

The lawn and garden stuff in front of the store is mulch, top soil etc. several display racks of bedding plants in season

Inside it’s 2-3 aisles of sundries- Ray Palada hoses, nozzles, junk etc

Lots of empty space.

I mentioned to an office person one day it would be nice to have some stock arrive. She said after inventory it would. Yea right.

About 25% of the lot is now Fenced off for a construction crew to park their equipment and supplies while they do street work in the area.

Slim pickings in lots of departments Yet they hang on. They’ve been in this building about 20 years I’m guessing.

FWIW, I have no idea how accurate this is, but I heard a couple years ago that many of Kmart's leases have an unusual structure where their rent payment depends on the store's earnings. That was reportedly why some of the low-earning Kmart locations were shut down even when they couldn't get out of the lease for a year or more, even several years, because it cost SHC less to let the building sit empty and pay much less rent.

So if that is the case, unless there's some other businesses renting adjacent to that parking lot that are consistently paying more rent, the landlord would be unlikely to want to put much investment into a Kmart property if their rent had plummeted. So the parking lot might be more of an indication of that store's fortunes than it would normally be. (Nothing is guaranteed, of course; well-performing stores have closed before too, e.g. if they get an attractive lease buyout offer.)

I've read that's pretty typical in most malls. Stores have to kick in a percentage of their sales to the mall owner. I've heard that why many jewelry stores have been moving out of malls and into stand-alone stores.

My local Sears is closing because the landlord is refusing to renew the lease.
