March 2019 (continued)

I finished up the cabinet at the end of March. I was able to somewhat save the old Lista sticker b carefully removing it with a heat gun and gentle fingers. My plan is to use it as a stand for my Dunlap drill press (future project) and to hold all of my fasteners, drill bits and metal scrap.

Nice Garage man!! i like the way everything matches. but curious, why get the bowling lane if you were gonna just cover it with steel? did you need it for weight support?

And nice car selection, my mom had a 350, man that was a great car with a 6 speed

Thanks Jarch! I originally wanted to go with a 1-inch thick top, but it was out of my budget. The bowling lane was much more reasonable, even thicker, and made mounting (and any needed removal) of the backstop relatively easy. It’s a bit overkill, but I tend to do that sometimes :D

Nice! The 350Z was my first car, and I learned to drive on my mom’s 280ZX. So yeah, I’m kinda Z-car obsessed lol.

Very Nice, Jumpman! Really like the color of those cabinets. keep up the good work, really enjoy your thread!

Thanks mlittle, I’m still back posting, hopefully I can get up to present day soon!

Thanks Boosted1, always good to know that there's other Z enthusiasts in here. I've definitely got more Z-related updates coming, and the next one is a big one! :)

Back in May, I came across a couple of guys selling Conoco signs. It took a while, but I was finally able to work out a deal with them. The price was really good, so I couldn't resist. I'll probably mount one somewhere in my garage once I wire up a plug for it. They are about 6'4" with an aluminum housing for the electrical stuff.

Well June had a great ending, as I finally acquired my high school dream car. What started off as a near purchase of a 1965 Datsun 320 pickup ended with me getting another Z32. This one, however, is the one I've always wanted. It's a 1990, Diamond Black Pearl with black and gray tweed interior, and it's super clean with only 78,128 miles as I type this. I saw a Z just like this one as a teenager, and I was pretty much hooked on Zs from that point on. This car has been a bit of a unicorn for me until now. It was purchased from another Z enthusiast, who even had most of the maintenance documentation on the car.

As far as performance goes, it's got a B&B exhaust and JWT Pop Chargers (intake cone filters for Z32s), putting it at Stage II according to the Z32 mod charts, or about 340 hp. However, coming from only driving naturally-aspirated cars, it feels like a lot more!

I'm still tinkering with the white Z, but this car has been a bit of a distraction. A fun one though!

Your new Z looks great. Looks like it was well kept.

The 90 model i have now is White with red interior.
Congrats!

Man, good thing you live across the country, you'd be a bad influence for sure.

Love the nissans. Back in high school we cut the top off a D21 and added an sti hood scoop. Never quite completed it, but what a trip.

Had an sr20det swapped 240 for a while. Had it set up pretty nice (stock turbo though) and sold it after I got tired of chasing problems. It hadn't been cared for well before i got it so most of owning it was replacing worn out suspension and such. Miss it for sure today, like most of my more interesting past cars. A z32 has been on my list of must own cars, all it takes is money.

Looking forward to the rest of your build, love how it's all coming together.

Just curious, have you ever worked in .mil aviation? Your attention to detail and ability to generate interesting solutions makes me think you might have. The tool layout too. Great stuff all around!

Thanks Boosted! I’m the third owner of the car, and the guy I bought it from was very meticulous, and after having a conversation with him, so was the previous owner.

You can’t go wrong with Nissan! A D21 convertible with a Subie scoop? That sounds interesting! I like Subies, too!

I’ve daily driven stock, KA-powered S13 240s for most of the last 16 years (my gold one is in some of the pics), and got to ride in a friend’s SR20DET hatch. The difference was night and day, so I’m sure that car was fun. Unfortunately, he also ran into problems and ended up throwing a rod. It was a fun car, though!

Thanks, I’m hoping to make some progress in the next week or so, once I get caught up on a few other things.

Riley, thank you, I wish I could say I did, but nope! My background is mechanical engineering, but I got some of the ideas for my tool layout from the technicians that I work around. As for my attention to detail, it’s mostly just OCD:D

Hey, the house across the street from me its coming on the market......I would love a neighbor like you. The down side is it only has a 3-car garage. Seriously, what is the status of the white Z? I look forward to you figuring that out and hearing it run. Cheers,
Michael

Hey man, Anny progress on the garage?
Bommenpro5, I have made a little progress on the garage recently, but work and some around-the-house projects (which I will share as well) have taken up a lot of my free time in the evenings to post. I'll get you guys caught up since I'm off for the weekend!

Nice garage. Cabinet resto looks great!

~Jim~

jesse72, I appreciate it! Initially I thought I overdid it getting all of those cabinets, but 3 years later, almost all of the drawers are full!

Been hoping for a update also!

Azmule71, I'll have some updates coming up shortly after this post :)

Michael, thanks, maybe I'll at least be closer one day, my mom keeps trying to get me to move to Cali. Honestly, I haven't touched the white Z in a while, but I want to hook up a fuel pressure gauge (hopefully this afternoon) and test the fuel pump. I'm hoping it's the culprit.

On a trip to visit my parents, I ended up buying this 76 sign. I couldn't pass it up, since we don't have them around here. I didn't get any pics, but the seller had an awesome vintage VW repair shop.
183.jpg

I found these old Texaco letters for a pretty good price. It was actually in a lot, so I ended up with extras of some of the letters. They were super dirty when I got them, but cleaned up nicely.
184.jpg

Coincidentally, a friend (same one that sold me the Phillips sign) found a logo.
No back light housing, but at $30, I wasn't going to complain.

I've been an on/off Hot Wheels collector for about 16 years. I try to get every Z and Nissan/Datsun release. I found out that Hot Wheels finally released the Z32 300ZX in two colors, so I had to get back in the game and hunt these down. It felt like perfect timing. I discovered a few others along the way.:D

Mounted some things on the garage walls that I thought would be more helpful. I found the chalkboard for $2 on FB Marketplace. Judging by the writing still on it, someone was setting some ground rules for their kid, lol.

Prior to building the house, I found four new-in-the-box automatic paper towel at Goodwill for $8 apiece. I'll probably mount a second one in the garage, and save the other two for my shop (years down the road probably). The first aid cabinet was found at an auction, it was also $8 (plus auction fees). I figured that kind of stuff would come in handy when I get hurt doing unsafe stuff. It'll be nice being able to patch myself up without having to drip blood in the house :shocking::D

Not really garage-related, but I did mention that some other projects had been taking up a lot of my time. One of them has been establishing my yard. After get quoted some ridiculous numbers from the landscaper, I decided to forgo doing the yard myself. It's been a long process (I started in mid-May), but definitely worth it and quite educational. I now see why that landscaper owns a Viper lol.

Last year, I borrowed my neighbor's tractor to cover the front yard with three truck loads of topsoil. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to work on the yard again until this year. I took two days off work to till up all of the weeds, and get the yard seeded.
193.jpg

194.jpg

I used my leveling rake and made this sleigh out of wood to get the ground leveled. Normally, you can make this with 2 x 4s, but I decided to incorporate 4 x 4s for extra weight. It was quite a workout, but got the job done pretty quickly vs using the rake all day.
195.jpg

196.jpg

I decided to go with Bermuda grass, since the rain here is pretty infrequent. I don't have a sprinkler system yet, so I just used a couple of hose sprinklers connected to a timer.

Reading online, it was stated that I could expect grass to show in about two weeks. This was truly a test of my patience, but as you can see in the pic below, two weeks was right on the money.
197.jpg

These pics are after two months of planting, and with a few rainy days. Please keep in mind that I only seeded about 2/5s of the yard, taking advice from a co-worker to work sections at a time. I did have to reseed a few bare spots and spray weed killer, so I'm glad I did it a little bit at a time. It's probably too late to do the rest of the yard at this point in the year, so I'll pick up where I left off next spring.

Now onto another project that I've been meaning to get around to: TV wall mounts. I've had wall mounts sitting in the back of my truck for a while, but after seeing the sprinklers and rain destroy one of the cardboard boxes, I realized that I needed to get on this.

I bought this tilting mount for my game room, since it can hold up to a 100-inch TV, and I'd like to go with a pretty big one. The back plate is wide enough to go through three studs, but unfortunately, the way plate's holes lined up, I couldn't hit three studs without moving the plate too far off the center of my mounting area. Solution? Make some new holes!

I drew crosshairs on the plate where I wanted to hit the middle stud, and drilled a couple of 1/4” holes that were offset from the factory ones. I’m sure two studs would have done the job for any size tv, but I like overdoing stuff.
201.jpg

202.jpg

203.jpg

204.jpg

As you can see, this is a huge mount. For now, I've got my old 40" Samsung LN-T4065F mounted. I'm going to wait and see how much prices drop after Christmas before I jump on the 4K train.
205.jpg

I also mounted this extending and tilting mount in one of the bedrooms. My original plans were to use it in the game room, but I couldn't get it to line up with two studs, as one of the studs was located right in the center of my opening. The instructions recommended to install this one with a second person, and I agree as it has quite a bit of weight, but I disassembled the arm from the backing plate to reduce to weight, and put it back together once I was done.

A couple weeks ago, I finished making repairs to my old Toro zero turn mower so I can sell it. Had it sold in a few days after posting online.
208.jpg

I'm pretty anti-stickers on cars, but the original owner of my black 300ZX had some work done on the spoiler, and the "TWIN TURBO" decal was never replaced. Luckily, you can still find OEM decals for the car. It's the most I've ever paid for a decal, but the Z now feels complete. :) I still need to make some repairs to or replace the clock and radio, though.

you can check your zones, but in my zone grass planting early fall (september-ish) is the best time to plant new grass.

Also, i am with you on those mounts. Maybe one day a US seller with notify their China supplier that our studs are 16" on center

I thought I was done getting any more cars, but when it rains, it pours I guess. Visiting a friend's shop to film the black Z for his Youtube channel, I made the mistake of inquiring about a 240Z that was sitting outside. A few weeks later, it was being trailered off to my garage.

211.jpg

For those curious, it's a 1973 with a 4-speed. It runs, and is somewhat driveable, but needs a lot of work (new floor pans, missing interior pieces, etc.). Overall, the body is solid and almost all of the metal looks good from what I see.

Having thought about it and watched other builds for the majority of the past two decades, I know exactly what I want to do with the car, which involves a full do-over and lots of cash. Given my current schedule and other goals, it will be a long term project. I'm just glad to get the car and for a good price, I've wanted one a very long time. A few parts have already been ordered, but the first thing on the agenda is to strip it down, replace the floor pans, and fix any other rust issues.

Hmm, I'll look and see if I still have time to plant in my area, it would be nice to make some more progress.

Exactly! I still have two more mounts to install, hopefully it will go smoothly.

Haven't posted in a while, been working quite a bit. Spending much of this weekend working on my Hardbody/D21. I'm replacing some of the steering and suspension components, including the tie rods, centerlink, idler arm, and ball joints.

I recently purchased a set of rare Nismo LMGT2 wheels for the black 300ZX. The faces have been refinished in Cadillac Gray powdercoat, which is basically a gunmetal, the color I wanted. The seller was even nice enough to include a Skyline GT-R Hot Wheels :)

218.jpg

219.jpg

These are two piece, 17x9 wheels, but I plan to have them converted to 3 piece wheels with barrels that step the wheel up to 18 inch. The wheels, were previously mounted on an R32 Skyline GT-R, so the offsets don't exactly line up with my Z, as you can see from the test fit. I'll get the offsets corrected and switch over to 10 inch wide barrels for the rear when I have the conversion done.

Two 1990 Z's? Those pintle style injectors will get destroyed by the 10% ethanol every 2-3 years. If you haven't yet, upgrading to the newer style injectors will save you a lot of headaches.

Yeah, and Z32s are notorious for succumbing to injector failure for that very reason. I believe the white one has been updated with the newer style injectors, but the black one most likely has the original ones, as everything seems to be original. At some point, I'll make the switch over. Fortunately, I live close to a gas station that sells ethanol-free premium fuel, which I've been exclusively using in the black Z since getting it home.

You got lucky with that gas station. I owned a used 90 for about 10 years, mostly wrenched on it myself. What a PITA car, especially as it aged and everything got brittle.

Z32s can be high maintenance for sure, but the enjoyment is worth it. So far, up on my maintenance list for the black Z is fixing a power steering leak and disabling or removing the HICAS system, and eventually a replacement of all of the hoses if I start finding some cracks. I was lucky in that the previous owner babied this car and already did the 120K maintenance not too long ago, so the engine is all good.

I got a new camera during the holidays, so I'm starting to test my filming abilities. I made this introductory video featuring a walk around of the black 300ZX. It took a long time to edit as I had to learn how to use the software, but little by little I'm getting more proficient at it.

Like a lot of people, I've been spending a lot of time inside lately. To keep myself busy, I focused on another hobby of mine: LEGO. I just recently finished building this set based on Dom's Charger from Fast and Furious. I even went as far as making my own minifigure of Toretto.
