LesserSon, that's the exact model of Brazil box I regretfully passed on. It was probably 85% of perfect. Who's going to post the third one this week?

$4 find today. Might not be able to cut

SO wrong- it's a real saw blade, and it's really sharp. I got mine new, and it came with warning labels and papers CAUTION it's sharp, handle with care, this can slice your veins wide open - all that.

Trip to Jake’s Flea this beautiful morning. A lot of vendors, but I’m about out of fun money, so less spending. $12.50 got all in the first picture. Other pics are sightings I didn’t buy.

How much were they asking for the anvil / vise? I might go next week and see if it's still there.

From that array of tools, looks like you met Bob the Tool Guy.

I picked up this Ingersol Rand bench grinder with IR stand this afternoon off CL. The grinder will be resold. I was really just interested in the stand. Thinking I can turn it into a vise stand. It's heavy and very stout. Set me back $50 for the pair.

As mentioned yesterday, hit two estate sales. Both on second or third day I think. This one was 50% off day. I dragged my fiancee out to both sales and we went to breakfast after. There were some great mules and horses at the property that we got to pet and hang out with. Most all the tools were water damaged or rusted.

Estate sale #1 pics.

A small Stanley plane, K-D impact driver, rail of Torx sockets, Klein adjustable and pocket knife, Proto hook spanner and brake spoon, Wiha screwdriver, unknown lock ring pliers, misc. spanner wrenches and sockets- one is for Suzuki when I looked it up, Heyco combo wrench, Vise Grip.

Unknown metal box. Looks familiar. :headscrat Filled it with misc sockets, mostly Craftsman and S-K.

A Seneca Nation patch- I think the residents were from NY! A small Wagner cast iron ashtray.

Taiwan made crowsfeet sets in SAE and metric. Craftsman and Blackhawk 1/2” ratchets. Blackhawk and ProAmerica 3/8” speeders.

Hit a few sales yesterday, as it was going to rain and I would not be able to paint outside.
The first one was the last day of an estate sale, where I picked up the following:

A bunch of different solders, Phluger reel oil, taper pin reamers, Proto misc. Williams wrenches and sockets, and a Lakeside chisel. Digging around a bit, I spotted a wrench roll though it looked foreign and cheap. But, low and behold:

It was filled with Thorsen USA metric wrenches. I will have to look for the 11mm and below, but not unhappy with that! Also picked this footstool up:

I have a soft spot for waterfall furniture, even though it needs refinishing. All told, that haul cost me $10.
After that, I had a few bad stops, but a TOO was very interesting:

A bunch of tools being sold by the daughter of the now passed former owner. After talking to her a bit, she was 53 and had recently adopted 3 kids under 10 that were abused and abandoned. She wasn't the type to take charity, so I bought everything I thought I could use or want. Plomb tappet wrench, Vlchek and Snap-on and Plomb combos, a very rusty Proto DOE, Proto scraper, and a Bonney Single offset. I did notice that she kept a full set of tools for herself, as she was putting a house in the bad side of town back in good order.

I posted in the vise thread, but I'll post here too. A Craigslist success story!

Athol M&F Co. no. 325-1/2X combo vise.
5.5" jaws, opens 9", weighs 140 lbs. I think it's a beast, and looks the part!

Of course it's missing 2 of 3 pipe jaws  and has other issues...all fixable...

Oh, it was $50, I didn't even try to negotiate.

I did however get this old Stihl 009 saw for next to nothing.
View media item 95710
Had to do a little work to it, the carb had to be cleaned, the chain brake was stuck, and the pull string was unwound, but got those fixed and now it runs great. Probably the best running saw I have besides the brand new ones.

From that array of tools, looks like you met Bob the Tool Guy.

$75. It was on a table outside a vendor shed, facing the Events Barn. Unless it sold, I would guess it’s locked inside that shed, waiting for you. I looked it over and thought it was in good shape. I didn’t see any markings, but it’s a Rock Island no.390. The socket is in there and turns, but I didn’t see a crank handle for drilling.
Yes, I first met Bob when he was still loading and unloading a pickup each day under the roofed tables. Now he has a shed, which I inspect every time I go. There’s usually some overlooked/underappreciated treasure in his “fill a box for $” heap.

It’s the second one I’ve seen at Jakes in two years. The first one had more decal surviving on the inside, but was a bit rustier. Guy wanted $35, if I recall.
I didn’t get a price on this one, because the vendor walked away with another buyer about some detail of their deal, and I wasn’t going to buy it unless it was absurdly low.

This weekends take from an estate sale and the flea market. Thought the little sets of offset DBE midget wrenches were pretty interesting, don't remember ever having seen those before. And 2 pair of the often long lost pipe jaws, with long lost vises instead!

Those are Draft Horse shoes. Do they look unused? New ones are that shape so the farrier can cut to length or reshape the ends. Size 6 is 6 1/2" by 9", size 8 is 7" by 10".
These are the 7x10's. I reckon they're unused the nail holes look untouched. Thanks for the info.

Been out of town for a couple weeks, and got home on Thursday night just in time to attend the best estate sale in my area in 18 months. Too bad I didn't arrive earlier, but I was still in the second group to get into the house (and then into the shopS). Yes, plural...It was definitely the right time to be back in town!

48 Ignition parts are mostly old school USA Echlin or Fairbanks-Morse. Most of the ones I've found applications for so far are for either V8s or tractors. One set of points each for a WW2 jeep and a WW2 WC in the box.

SnapOn: Ferret sliding T (may be wartime), timing light, bushing driver set, collett-type remover set (missing a collett), feeler gauge.

Proto: two 3/8" dr. screwdriver bits, 3/8" drive torque wrench, 16 piece combo wrench set, red tool roll used for a background.

Miscellaneous wrenches: New Britain chrome; Possible wartime: SK 3/8" breaker, (X) 2015A DBE, SnapOn Ferret sliding T mentioned above, Billings 5B783 (11/16 x 3/4), Armstrong 5B784 (13/16 x 7/8) and 5B785 (15/16 x 1").

Long C or geometric C Craftsman: depth mic in case, layout protractor with metric scale, 3/4" combo, 13/16" BE socket

Caterpillar brand tools: 2 sliding-Ts with 10" extensions, chrome 1/2" dr. to 3/4" dr. adapter, a feeler gauge and a lever-type grease gun; all will be for sale when I get better pics made.

Grease guns: Lincoln and two Alemites are all possible wartime, more research required. Cat is modern.

100 foot long 12 gauge extension cord will go to the battleship. This is the 3rd I've bought lately, and have less in all three than to go buy a new one.

16 or 20 foot long jumper cables on No. 4 welding cable.

Outlaw, the Coleman 502 (1980) and lantern reflector: a guy tried to buy the stove from me before I'd even paid for it, but I'd been looking for one of these, and when I cracked the fuel cap, it released pressure. Had enough fuel in it to make my coffee on Saturday morning, and all I had to do was pump it back up. Glad that I didn't sell it!

Ragtop, for a second I thought "Dang, I need to look out for those mini DBE sets, those are cool". Then I looked in my box and realized I have a set each of combos, DBEs, and DOEs. They came with the first used Craftsman stack I bought from a guy who worked at Sears in the eighties.

I always felt that if I didn't know what I had, then I had too many tools. Now I feel like I just scored and never left my garage, lol.

""Grade measuring" telescope "protractor" - This thing is cool - it has a scope inside the tube, a mirror on one half that allows the user to see the protractor AND the object being sighted on, with a cross bar to align them. SO: setup a sighting pol (those things surveyors use for sighting on, ) and set for the height of the user's eye, Sight in it at the bottom/top of the grade, adjust the level until you can sight the bubble (smallest bubble I've ever seen in a level's sight glass) and read the protractor directly in Grade!

$6.25 all told!

attachment.php

If you use the trignometery formulas you can determine the height of a tall object or deep hole if you have the distance from the object.

I have one in my toolbox for work. But these days I use other tools, but I still have it in my collection. Mine is kept in a nice leather case. Bruning 4774 are the only marking on mine.

I picked up this hammer at an estate yard sale this weekend for 2 bucks.
I didn't really know what it was, but the handle was good & it was ;;;;;;;;;;;green;;;;;;;
I thought it was old, but research shows the company is alive & well & would want 70 bucks for a new one!
http://www.garlandmfg.com/mallets/solid.html
Maybe it's the expense of water buffalo hide?
Wish it was the split head variety that can change head types.

3jakes: That is an old one. That was one of if not their first patent (June 26, 1928). I hear you on the split-head. I have one of each and the split head with the screw-collar is ideal. And with that type set-up it doesn't matter what the material is. If you knock those old rawhide rolls out you may find that they are pounded into a round disk with sharp prongs on it. Or not. They often go missing. Either way, you can pound rubber or rawhide plugs into the sockets with or without the pronged disks. I've never tried it with brass though.

That rawhide hammer don't look too bad. Should be able to clean up those rolled back edges and make it look good as almost new again!

GPW, 502's are handy stoves, but find a 500 and be prepared to be impressed!

The reflectors go for semi-stupid $$ (there is a reason I don't have one...) Nice finds!

Madison, I was cleaning mine and realized it is designed with TWO scales on the protractor! three Pin spanner nuts and you can take the thing apart and there is a (degree?) scale on the opposite side. it's all pined so it goes back accurately.

3J, set one end of the face in a shallow pan of water. Once its soft, use a hose clamp to squeegee it round and tight again, and let ti dry.

Flip and repeat... (you can be doing the second soak while its drying...)

Yeah, got a few - this is my DD and tire mounting hammer for the past 3 decades or so. once upon a time the tool grey was unblemished and those faces were new! (I had to unwind a couple of faces to get to the size needed, than pressed them in with a vise...

And the others (I think all the rawhide's are in there...)

Outlaw, Abney level scales are often in degrees and percent (10 feet rise/fall in 100 feet is 10 percent) on opposite sides. Percent is used in construction (roads, etc.) most often, and is very useful for small grades.
