I want to give him a chance to do this without turning him in. I need to talk with some family and friends that know him well. It is not something I want to do, it would be life changing in more than one way and it could turn him against me completely.

Sorry to hear about your father having seizures. I was diagnosed with having seizures around 2000. I hope he at least gets a warning that they are coming on. Hopefully doctors will find the correct medication(s) to stop them, and hopefully even find out what causes them. Here in Ohio the Neurologist is required to notify DMV, and you have to have your Neurologist fill out paperwork each year to give you rights to drive. Good luck and I hope your father gets better.

Had the same issue back in IL. DMV wouldn't even talk to my brother and myself. Had a friend that was a police officer, and he sent a note to the DMV that he observe red dad driving and questioned if he should be driving. DMV sent dad a letter that he had to be tested within 30 days.
Dad had catrerics in both eyes and was basically blind. He had the surgery, but never went in to be retested. Was a tough month !!!

The good thing is that Dad has acknowledged not driving for the next few months, we also pull insurance off the bigger trucks really soon, he doesn't want them driven in the winter months, this should give me until March to have things figured out. Hopefully once he gets to see a Neurologist for the long term they will be required to notify the state, but the Neurologist at the hospital said she was not required to notify them.

I believe Florida only disqualifies drivers who have received a death certificate. May not be law but from observation there are a lot of near-death drivers still behind the wheel down here.

Have you driven in Nashville Tn? Not even death disqualifies drivers.

When it came time for Mom to quit driving, it became my job as the oldest son and I'm 3 hours away to break the news to Mom. Had the phone conversation with her and although she was unhappy, seemed to take it well. Called my sister and told her to go get the keys, Mom was expecting her. Sister picks up two sets of keys and an earful from Mom about how bad a son I am :) Two days later I get a phone call from a high school friend "dude your Mom just ran me off the road, you need to get her off the road" What?? we took her keys two days ago? After we collected the fourth set of keys, I called my Brother in law and told him to go get the van and lock it into a storage garage I rented. Who knows how many sets of keys she had made LOL And then I was really a BAD son :)

Very sorry to hear about your dad's health situation. My mother, in her late 80's, has those seizures that you can't necessarily detect while they are happening. Its a scary situation, her driving days are long done, but its still worrisome.

And we lost a friend when he had a seizure while driving, got into a fatal accident, fortunately he did not take anyone else with him.

Good luck and best wishes for your dad's health. -Eddie

When my mother was 92 she complained that they were changing the street names. She had been following the car in front of her into a left turn lane and didn't realize she had done that. Got that special look that disappointed/angry elderly mothers have but when I suggested we sell her car and give the money to her favorite grandson, it was all good for a year or two. Deal with my son was that he drive the 35 miles to visit her and bring as many of the 7 great grandkids as would fit in the Suburban (made sure $100 gas/food money was waiting when he arrived). It's bribery disguised as love.

Maybe promise you or your brother will drive him wherever he wants whenever he wants. That or an ankle monitor.

MY dad has at least admitted that driving is no longer the joy it was - when he had 2 decent eyes. He has glaucoma and only has about 3/4 of vision left in the good eye. His 92 year old girlfriend may be the 'eyes on the road'.

I am meeting the GF for dinner tonight, I am driving about 5 MPH in a plaza to get to the restaurant, there is a guy sitting on the sidewalk in front of a closed store, as I get closer, he throws the top of one of those ash can things with the tube neck out in front of my truck. I stop, he gets up and runs away, WTF? Not really sure what was going through his head.

My dad was also in his early 70's...

He had three minorish accidents in one day... damaged the front and both sides of his car... the weather was fine that day...

I asked why he was out three different times... he had no answer. Plus the accidents were in locations that didn't jive with his normal destinations...

I tried and tried... this was a long time ago... he would just make arrangements with his friend (the body shop guy)… and pay for all the repairs out of his savings.

So, looks like we may have opened up an unclosable can of worms with the new truck that we bought and the employee. At this point it appears that he is under the impression we bought him a new truck, my father doesn’t like confrontation with him, so now I don’t know what to do. I have no real power when it comes to the employee and Dad has made that very clear. The entire reason we did this was because the employee was becoming far too entitled with the company money, now it appears I may have created a monster.

Question, are you in any way management of the business? If so keep the keys with you always.

The issue is that the employee is supposed to plow and this truck is the new plow truck, but it was not intended to be his personal truck, even my Dad agrees, yet I think my Dad will back down because he doesn’t like confrontation with the employee. Basically this employee does what he wants, gets what he wants, whenever he wants. I have been trying to keep things in check, but he always says “it’s a deal your dad and I made way back”. My dad can’t remember the deal, so he doesn’t argue. We are trying to get things into a written format and the employee will have to follow the new written rules, this way I am in the loop so if he is not following the rules, I can call him out.

Are you hiring? I want to work at a place like that. Sounds like it’s time for a new discussion on management within the company.

Like others, my dad started having seizures so my mom had to drive for about a year then he stopped having seizures. At 83, my mom started getting a lot of bumps and bruises on her car plus she was having memory issues so we sold the car. Though both sons said she needs to stop driving, my brother still gets blamed to this day for getting rid of her car.

Everyone that hears about this employee asks the same thing. If I listed all the perks you would flip a lid. My dad doesn’t want to give up control.

Man, I hate to read this.. Strouty, just an outsider following you, years of supervision and management..

As I see it:

This isn't an employee - it's your dad's "best friend " and your dad doesn't want to hurt the relationship. You aren't going to win on this until your dad hands over control or you walk away. As long as your dad maintains control over what the guy gets and does, something written is going to be worth less than the paper it's written on.

I feel for you, there is a way out of this, probably painful for you. :(

I am a door mat when it comes to family, I can’t just walk away, there is too much long term at stake. I have a serious vested interest in the longevity of the company, if I leave now, I would toss it all, that is just not in my nature. Dad is going to make this difficult, but in the end, he will have to figure out what is more important, his employee or the family.

I helped my brother this morning, then he helped me move all the trucks from out back, almost all the trees are cleared now and he is feeding the chipper with his tractor. He won’t be back until Monday, but it will give me some time to get the stumps out on Sunday. It is looking much better, even though I can hardly see it in the dark.

While he was cutting trees, I got the newest knuckle boom plumbed up and figured things out so I could run it off the mitsu, no pics, I was trying to beat the dark. Funny thing was I had everything picked up because I didn’t have the proper fittings to make it work, then I found one and had to rob another one from OMO’s knuckle boom, then I had to get all the tools back out and finish things. It was a pain, but so glad I did it, now I know I can make the booms operate, next step is to remove them from the trucks.

Yes, very impressive for sure.

I spent the afternoon pulling stumps with my DR portable back hoe ( ;) ) I got almost all the stumps out, then I had two things happen, one was the temp gauge was way too high, not sure if it works, need to look things over in the morning, could be a belt or something, or it could be the gauge doesn't really work anymore. Then I smelled hot hydraulic oil, never a good thing, i was leaking fluid like crazy, found where it was coming from, removed the culprit hose, but I don't have the equipment or supplies to fix it at the shop. It was getting dark anyways, so I figured probably about time to stop. Still annoying that a 12" piece of 3/8" hose can stop production. I needed to go to the hydraulic hose store anyways so I can get the rest of the parts for the red knuckle boom.
