I have been surprised at what sells and what doesn't. I never get there at the time they start, as I hate waiting in lines, so I may miss the super cheap things. But it really depends on what things are priced at. Most companies are pretty good at spotting the Snap-on, Craftsman and they are starting to see what Proto is worth. They price that stuff higher, but most will miss the older or not as famous tools. But, if there is a lot of stuff, they might miss those things entirely. Or, they might not be good at dealing with shop stuff.

I was at a sale not to long ago done by a company that I don't think knows anything about pricing tools, and I was right. I found Snap-on ratchets mixed in with ordinary stuff and priced cheap. But you had to dig for it. Then again, I usually pass on the sales they have as they focus on ****, in my opinion.

How about the Cornwell?

I would guess that 90% of sellers have never heard of Cornwell. I don’t want to derail your thread too much but since you are in the Bay Area, I found this haul at a Mill Valley garage sale listed on Craigslist on Thursday. I arrived an hour after the sale started. The tools were a bit rusty but even the Snap-on stuff was reasonably priced and cleaned up well. Here are before and after shots.

Also, how is the backdrag on the JR72L, a 72-tooth newer ratchet, compared to the old-school JR-30, JR-50, and JR-301?

I found a craigslist deal that I found for $50 and the chrome is very clean. Is that a good price?

My interest mostly lies only in vintage tools, so I have no knowledge of the more modern ratchets. You may have to post your question in the General Tool Discussion forum

I've used the punch in the hole and tapping with a hammer method to open them up. Works pretty well. Soaking for a week in trans oil or reapplying penetrating oil over several days does a fair job of loosening them up some.

The hole should have a small BB in it. I have an assortment in a box I picked up at a garage sale. Sometimes I can get one to fit without interfering with the teeth or falling out the top hole. Otherwise I plug the hole with some heavier axle grease.

Thanks. By "BB," do you mean ball bearing or BB as in a BB gun pellet?

Can you guesstimate the size?

It's a small ball bearing.... not sure of the size. I've got a small assortment and use them on a lot of different ratchets.
