Recommend me a hose clamp plier set

I've been replying on long reach needle nose pliers for far too long. I'm looking for a set of hose clamp pliers that will remove the eared pinch on type of clamps. I'd like a big set that includes the cable type for tight locations. There are many for sale on Ebay for about 50 bucks, but I'm afraid that they are junk. I don't need truck brand, but I don't want junk either.

You don't need a whole set. All you need is one good cable operated pair. Mayhew 28680.

I got a good 3 pack set at HF a few weeks ago. They're the Pittsburgh Pro brand and will work fine for my needs. The only thing is that you may need to go through several packs to make sure you get a good set as the quality control is not the best. Some of the tips are off center and don't come together properly.

Anyone tried this type that you use with a ratchet/extension? They look like a good simple design with less to go wrong than the cable type but not sure you could get into as tight places.

The disadvantage of a set, is that the market is flooded with shall we say, low quality versions.

You really need two types. A quality cable style. Astro, Mayhew, and others have them. when picking a pair, look at the locking mechanism. You want one with multiple teeth like a saw blade. This allows you to lock the clamp in different positions. Whereas, the ones with the single hook only allow you to lock in a single position which requires you to use your hand pressure if you want anything else.

The second type looks like a pair of slip joint pliers with thick jaws.

Do not confuse these with the old round corbin hose clamps. These have grooves in the jaws for flat band style clamps. AST offers them and they are rebadged by more than a couple of tool trucks.

Another option is vice grip style locking hose clamp plier. Gearwrench used to make some, but I think they discontinued them. Other companies still make that style though. They also make slip joints pliers w/ the same type of jaw as those locking ones as well. AE92 or AE932(newer model of the AE92 I think) from KTC is one Japanese made example.

The one advantage of the Mayhew design is you can compress large clamps without having to open your hand up so far.

I have the cable type from Astro, and the KTC AE921. I like them both and select one mostly depending on the space I have to work with. The KTC AE921 is small and works with any 3/8 drive device, it really clamps down well. The Astro cable type has the cable obviously which you don't want to bend too much or deform..that can be an issue depending on the space.

am also looking to get the KTC AE932....sometimes the AE921 can twist a bit on high torque situations...am thinking the AE932 would avoid that.

this is the KTC AE921. Typical Japanese attention to detail and very high quality construction. I like it because it's small and can be worked with any 3/8 drive device.

The clamp I posted is from Laser tools. I assume made in Taiwan or China. Looks the same as KTC. Not sure if KTC make their own or rebrand the same one.

I just did a car with 20+ coolant hoses using the clamp style in post #4. They had been on there for 15+ years. My most used items were: Knipex 85 51 250 A 9 (paid $40 on Amazon.de), Snap On 97ACF ($45, eBay), Irwin long reach 45deg needle noses 1773583($20 Amazon), plastic trim tools & xacto, a heat gun and silicone lube.

YMMV, but I never felt the need for cable driven ones.

another option is the KNIPEX Spring Hose Clamp Pliers with locking device (85 51 250 AF)

they're like cobras except with rotating tips. these look like the best ones to me assuming they can fit. maybe it won't work in a super tight space.

the 'AF' version locks closed so you can free up your hand
the 'A' version doesn't lock
