I picked up my first Vlchek wood handled nutdriver...
What size is it? I am looking for a No. 12 (3/16"), a No. 28 (7/16") and a No. 36 (9/16") to complete an 8-pc set.

Lugz, I know you’ve been seeking barristers for some time now - that one looks to be solid oak - I’ve seen a few that were faux-painted to look like it, but “sellers” still price them too high. Glad you got a good one at a price you like.
Thanks, LS. I don't think the seller knew they were a partial set of Globe-Wernicke! The decal is gone and he didn't recognize the hardware. I didn't either until rlitman pointed it out. If you go to the 'Showcase' thread, I posted photos of a full set (I am missing the base and the first section...) on sale at an antiques store for $1,300!

And lastly I put up this Snapon Cabinet that wasn’t getting enough bids on Feebay-so I guess I’ll keep it..

Picked up this 12x18x3 Mojave (aka Precision Granite) surface plate off CL this evening. It's AA grade. Accuracy rated at .000050". Weighs in at 81 lbs. I'll use it to sharpen plane irons, chisels and flatten tools that need it. Cost me $50.

TX, nice score on the surface plate, that will be perfect for what you plan to do with it. Sounds like a handy size too.

I am missing the base and the first section.
Even if such a base materializes, it may better satisfy your purpose to stack them on a table or bench, a la highboy. If a base were to be added, the lowest tier would then require uncomfortable stooping or squatting to inspect.

Hemifalcon, those cabinets look great! Maybe medical, originally? If so, they tend to command a premium.

Those cabinets have a great look!

and LUGZ - the barristers are nice!

I love storage, esp. with glass fronts for display!

At last--an estate sale nearby! SWMBO had to work today, but we sat on the couch last night and went through the pictures together. I hit the sale this morning with her shopping list, but with a "72" as my number, most of her list left in someone else's hands.

My first pass thru the detached barn found SWMBO's bench and 30-some children's books for grandkids that don't exist yet. In her defense, we lost many of these same books that we read to our kids in a garage fire six years ago, so these are "replacements".

The barn had many rooms and storage areas. Ducking my head into one on a whim netted me the dusty but like new Coleman fluorescent lantern, with charger. You never know what you can find if you look.

This was one of those estates where there were tools scattered wherever they were last used or in buckets with supplies from whatever the last job was. Believe me, I can sympathize--some of my tools are in the same state.

I picked up everything pictured for $65.

How about two boxes of 6" NOS files, Heller square and Kearney & Foot half round bastards?

Drywall inside corner tool--this is a smaller than the giant one I bought new
Waller 8200-N solder gun
Ace 4" and 3" hole saws--nice additions to my growing collection
Hose nozzle
Utica 114 wire strippers
Klein & Utica needle nose pliers
Wire brush
Utica 4" adjustable
Pair of big Craftsman DBEs
Two pair of big, sharp scissors, one Italian made
Putty Knife
1-1/2 spade bit
Ryobi and Makita drill-and-driver bit holders
Millers Falls No 188A push drill with 5 of 8 bits in the handle!
Black & Decker hot glue gun w/ about 30 sticks of glue--because it took me a while to find SWMBO's last time I needed one

Here's the best part of the haul: Snap-On TQS-6 Torqometer, 1/4" drive. I found it buried in one of those cheap briefcase tool kits with mostly throwaway imported tools. Again, you never know what you'll find unless you look. Normally I flip any Snappy I find to pay for the hobby, but I don't have a 1/4" drive torque wrench. I think I'll keep this one.

BB Assuming the lantern is 12V and that the adapter is for it, you can make up a lighter socket line with the right plug for the jack and run that off any car/truck lighter socket.

And assuming its 2 6V box batteries, you can get adapters for 4 D cells instead of the box batteries (I set one up like that and used rechargeable NiCads, as well as the cigar socket cable...)

Nice haul, BB.
I came home just in time to see a northern harrier ****** a finch from my neighbor’s hedge. Probably similar to your 1/4dr torque-o-meter find.
All I got at the indoor flea was a Landmark book about Pocahontas & John Smith, a crowntop logo C’man hacksaw frame, and three older DOEs. $6 for all.
I do not recognize the logo on the two S-wrenches. Maybe “S \ M.Co.” with a tiny wrench under the second line. Anyone else?
I don’t usually pick up Fairmount wrenches, but this one had such an interesting shape, I just had to.

Well, jiggity-jig! After reading your post, I went to check what I thought was the battery compartment, and look what I found!cc06fa63b0d0bd5c3349189b0da40422.jpg

Picked up this Athol 613 at an estate sale yesterday for $15. It was frozen solid and looks like they even cut it off a workbench because they couldn’t get the bolts loose. At least 8 other guys went in the “tool room” while I was there and passed it up.
5 minutes with pb blaster and a wire brush and it works fine. Handle is even straight. Not sure what’s going on with the springs on the sides (?).

That is a U-**** price. I would guess the PO wanted a spring-assist when opening the jaws. Is there any damage to, or a missing collar on the main screw, which might cause the dynamic to remain closed when backing the main screw out? If not, maybe just to take up slop.

Ah. I think you’re into something as there is some play in it. I’ll take the screws out so I can pull it apart and have a look.

It’s possible he was trying to take out some slop, but I don’t see how. As it is, the jaws only have about a millimeter or so of play, but it’s in closing. Nothing wrong with the functionality of the vise when it’s clamping, as it doesn’t come open or anything. Inspection showed no damage to the screw or collar; just seems like loose tolerances until you clamp something down.
Borrowed my 2 year-old’s sidewalk chalk. Lol

Some random rust that I don’t need followed me home from the Habitat store: a Lebus A-1 lever binder that I have absolutely no use for (but it’s working load is 26,000 lbs!), a cool old Kamp Kook stove with mostly surface rust, axe head with faint “Plumb” lettering, an Imperial tubing flaring kit in a cool orange color with vintage graphics (and perhaps a missing part?) a small trapezoidal tool case with a large New Britain Mach Co hex key and what looks like missing sockets (from the indentations in the case). All out the door for ~ $25.9668a57b135782834dc797e830917878.jpg370975d355fda67f1e9451360096a5eb.jpg512bb9692692cba8f148641f699ffc21.jpgd05f3630541b3fa51c5bf094e54c4880.jpgc9c9beda79c8d98d42e84ebca30a4821.jpga2ba3e3573fbe211103bca2990160318.jpgdfa2149900bc0a7c064472ba54b1a4f6.jpg0d5be5ad19293f2a0fd28a75fa4f72cd.jpg

I hit a new flea market about 20 miles from home this morning. First time I’ve been tool hunting this year. Got 3 Wizard DOE’s, 3 Snap On DOE’s, a stubby Craftsman 9/16, a Thorsen 3/8, a never opened Evercraft screwdriver set, one Wizard DBE, a Western Auto gap tool, and a pair of Snap On needle nose pliers all for $12

GREAT find on the Athol SZ!

BHK thsts a nice find on the Kamp Kook BUT while it says it can use "leaded gas" meaning pump gas for cars, I would NOT - automotive fuel has many many additives and I'd not be cooking FOOD with that stuff! Stick to Coleman or Crown fuel, or other ":white gas" or naphtha based fuels...

The springs could perhaps have been used to keep someone from opening the vise to far out?

I agree with you. I stick to white gas for these types of stoves (Coleman’s etc). Burns cleaner and less stove maintenance. This is my first Kamp Kook. It will be interesting to compare its performance to my 413 and 425 Coleman “suitcase” stoves.

We were back in San Leandro, CA today for two estate sales that popped up on Craigslist. The first sale produced lots of Craftsman, Powr-Kraft and Thorsen sockets along with a Powr-Kraft carry box and some other miscellaneous tools. The second sale had us looking through the tools with a bunch of competing buyers. I was going through a large carry box filled with various tools, mostly Blackhawk. It seemed as if the owner had marked each of his tools with an obvious grind mark which made us much more selective. I looked more closely at the box and realized that it had the wartime S-K decal. After a brief negotiation with the seller it came home with us along with some other early treasures, mostly with the ever present grind marks. Even the Paschall ball pein and Blackhawk ratchet weren’t spared.

Thanks. The exterior is kind of Battleship gray but at least it’s a decent repaint, not a spray bomb. I found a listing for a very similar box in the 1943 S-K War issue catalog. I think that I could duplicate the set shown except for the extensions. It’s quite a large toolbox. Looks kind of like a cantilever box from the outside.

No estate/garage sales that even looked worth hitting today but this afternoon I spotted a couple of items on CL. I've been looking for a Makita 18V vacuum backup. Now I've got one. This is the most used tool in my shop next to my overhead lights. Also, bought this WoodRiver chisel set from the young man. Carpenter by profession but enjoys woodworking. We had a nice long chat. He also threw in a very used Makita battery charger. Got mine plus a new backup so that one will be the double emergency backup.

My 8am indoor flea wasn’t much; mostly used dvds and costume jewelry. But I did score a couple used santoku-style knives and two 3” pliers. The square-jawed pliers fooled me - I thought they said Lindstrom, but it’s Leckmann (John Elias Bleckmann, mid-to-late1800s maybe?). Seriously, I need new glasses. The Uticas are no mystery - “pat apd for” dikes with good cutting edge! The grip pattern dates them from 1913 into the 1920s. It would be easy to date them more specifically if I knew the patent. There’s a patent gap for Utica from 1909 to 1934 on DATAMP, though from their activity up to then, you’d think there must be something.
$7 for all.
Last pic shows the 3” dikes with their larger, younger siblings. I guess they must be model 41-3, though the only markings are those forged-in diamonds and the patent notice.

As I was leaving, I got back on CL and learned an antiques store a few miles away was open today. I've driven past it dozens of times and it is NEVER open. So naturally, I had to check it out. Not much in the way of tools...a made in England Stanley plane...not for me. I chatted up the owner, and as I was leaving, spotted this heritage-badge Craftsman sliding-tray carry box under a table, marked “Special Sale \ Regular Price $38.” But the sale price was torn off. Turns out her son is on eBay all the time, and she doesn't do flea markets “because no one around here wants to pay more than a dollar for anything.” Well, usually that includes me, but I really haven’t seen this style box around. So I pulled all the cash out of my pocket, which amounted to $35. “Is that really all you have?” “Literally my last dollar.” “Okay; maybe you'll come back.” Maybe, if she ever opens again.
MrsLS came to the door while I was trying to slip in unnoticed (fat chance with three traitorous Labradors in the house). “Don’t ask!” I say. “You spent all your money?” “I said, don’t ask.” Sometimes, that’s just the way things go.

LS does the box have the swing out trays, or the separate removable tray? They made several varieties of these "lunch box" tool boxes. (the one I want has the key lock on top...)

Also, did you buy it (as in she said OK I'l take exactly $35? - forgive sales tax?)

Gah. It pains me to see those lunchpail boxes. One of my stupidest 'stupid me' flea market stories. I've told it many times. Didn't like the price. Thought I'd be able to talk him down at the end of the day after walking around, and of course, it was gone. Even thumbed the grime off the decal for someone else to be able to ID it more easily.

JoCo has a good tutorial on them in the Long C thread.

You should have knocked her down on the price since that latch-hasp is clearly not original. I saw that even before comparing it to the catalog shot you posted next to it>:bounce:

Yes, I was overeager to hand over my money, but I have to respectfully disagree about the hasp. It’s attached with identical type rivets as the rest of the construction, with factory-looking cutout and no extra holes or disturbed paint. The chrome looks exactly like the chrome on the carry bar.

- BTW, if a PO has put duct tape on the handle to conceal chrome loss, do not rip it off, because it will take off more of the chrome! -

The trays are hinged to slide to the sides on rails as you open the two-piece top. They don’t rise up like some cantilever boxes. The 1948 catalog describes the sliding feature as “new,” so no older than that.
Yes, I bought it. $35 exactly. Sorry I made that ambiguous.

Here is the side, bottom (a little rust, but no holes), and wide open. The carry bar was attached with two cotter pins, which came out pretty easily. Not so sure that is the original fastener. There were two pins rattling around inside the tube that might indicate something more like a rivet.
The real obvious mod is a strip of aluminum angle riveted onto one tray, with a small cutout rolled down from the adjacent divider wall. Some tool needed a different arrangement, I guess.

It’s currently drying after a Simple Green bath, to remove the odor of having housed rodents at some point. Wipe down with WD40, next. The slides stick, so I’ll be looking through that tutorial for how to pop them out. They’re not as straight as they might be, and may have some grit embedded, too.

Aha- here is that hasp, more clear in the 1949 catalog. If it’s really a design change from 1948, and not just an illustration change, then that’s the earliest this box can be.

I’m sorry - I screwed up a detail of the story! It was marked $38, and she agreed to $35. No wonder Outlaw questioned that. So I guess that made it closer to 10% off day for me.

Yesterday, Saturday that is, I went out and made the rounds. One estate sale, four garage sales, and the Restore.

A Williams 3/4 drive Superatchet, Stanley aluminum bevel gauge, and a Bonney socket. The ratchet, frozen when I bought it, and bevel gauge came from the estate sale, which was on half-price day. I don't know why I bought the bevel, as I have 3-4 in various sizes. $10. The garage sales were dead, though one had the best view of the valley I have ever seen. Socket was .25. There was a little Bog hex drive set, marked down from 60 to 40. Been sitting there for a while. Maybe someone will want it at that price...

I did a slightly different move. I picked one at a swap. It was the second booth in from the enterance sitting some folding tables. The booth was packed and I couldn't get to so I had to hurdle a fence in the back to get to it for fear of losing it to someone else. The lady running the both saw me and laughed. Good thing the price was good as I think I lost all negotiating power leaping that fence.

Today was the last day of the estate sale I hit on Friday. The main reason I had gone was the Wilton bullet vise I'd spotted in the background of two pics. Turned out one of the children (FYI, these children are in their 60s) had pulled the Wilton out of the sale. He said it was damaged but that he kept it because he thought Wilton has a lifetime guarantee on their vises. He brought the vise back to the sale for me to look at this morning. It was WAY rougher than even the bad fuzzy pic showed. I bought it thinking it was best case a parts vise. Fyi, this is my first Wilton bullet vise and the first one I've ever even seen in the wild. The owner said the handle turned freely but the jaws wouldn't move. I decided to buy it so I could learn about these vises. Picked up some other miscellaneous hardware stuff. Total spent today was $40 (vise) and $3 (misc). Now before anyone offers any congrats - more is missing than is obvious. Inside the body there's nothing around the main screw, the pins for the vise nut are badly bent as well. The stationary base is also cracked. See the pics...

One last thing, threw the Craftsman crown Power-Return tape in my pile hoping I could fix it or worst case I'll learn how tape measures are put together. I'll probably open a separate thread to ask about fixing it.
