Poly wheels will disintegrate after 10-15 years and you will have to replace them. Every tool/bench/storage cabinet in my shop is on wheels. I've had to replace them all. Typical damage:

What material for the replacement casters did you choose? Poly doesnt look to be a worthy material for my lista cabinet that I want to add to a currently non rolling unit.

I went with poly(I assume it's poly?) replacements. For my big bench, I had a spare set of 5" swivel casters with good bearings and zirck fittings, so just went with what I had on hand to save money. The r cabinet had 3" poly swivel/braking casters from Woodcraft (Taiwan) and I was able to find replacement wheels for those at less than the cost of new casters, so I went with poly for those too. Why? I'm 77...if I outlive these, I will gladly replace them :bounce:

velocipede - Would you please look at your damaged casters and tell the COO Country of Origin ?Or any info stamped on them.Thank you, VERY curious.Marc

Marc, Those casters went to the scrapper across the street, but they came from Northern Tool, so they were probably from Taiwan (15+ years old) or maybe mainland China. I couldn't find a COO on the ones I replaced them with, but while I was out there looking, guess what I found on my Performax 22-44+ sander...all four casters!

I have found that anykind of compounded rubber and many plastic items from China often degrade VERY prematurely.

I have some hard "rubber" ? USA made casters that are 45 yrs old and as new.

Yup.

As I said before - Best value caster source is Ebay - Look for ONLY USA made, and will often be lightly used takoffs, sometime NOS.

Seriously Guys, Casters are among the stupidest things to buy non USA.

But your'e gonna say "The USA made ones are 5x the money" cuz the dang china ones are SOOOOO damn cheap.

NOT if you do what I said on Ebay.

A lot depends on the surface the casters will roll on. Steet on steel has very low rolling resistance, that’s why railroads use steel wheels.

When I can’t repurpose an existing caster I buy some from used stuff from a “Bone Yard” or Harbor Freight.

10-15 years life isn't the worst I have heard for smooth operation.

Not that I would use them on anything that heavy, best lighter duty casters are to buy HF moving dolly’s and remove the castors.
