Here's the Saftey-gun business end. The second picture is with the trigger squeezed. When you squeeze, the U-shaped "barrel" pulls back and internal pins simultaneously slides forward.df0e1b73e1ed89f524afbcda4f59f4f9.jpgead72479c1c414bd1637ce7d99850721.jpg

There is a 2014 youtube video of 3H Safety Pliers Pat Pending. It doesn’t give any further information, but the music is groovy.

Try searching ”Cleco 3H” - looks like riveting tool after all. Maybe it holds prepunched sections together while they are fitted and riveted with another tool?
I bet one of our aeronautical mechanic members could explain it. Probably aluminum boat builders, too.

Almost didn't go to this sale - last day, started at 8AM and I didn't even wake up til 9:30. But it was a nice day for a 35 mile drive and interstate all the way so off I went. I was quite surprised to find the vise that was my main objective unsold. I grabbed it, made a deal and here it is: my very first Double Swiveling Bastage!! And the swiveling jaw is completely free and functional - not a speck of rust anywhere.
That done, I scoped out the rest and came up with the wall mountable metal plug strips, a (I hope) complete set of 1/2" drive None Better sockets and a tub of flat wrenches, about half and half USA and foreign. Total tab: $120

edit: I just weighed the vise and was shocked - SHOCKED- to find it's only 62 lbs. It felt like a LOT more moving it around.

I started thinking Big Clecos after Dodge mentioned Pin removal so if Cleco, both installation and removal.

So possibly used in conjunction with riveting since Clecos are just fixtureing pins

kelvinator grinder

My estate sale buy yesterday. 10$. Plus 10$ from home depot to re cord it
1750 motor that I am yet to stall.

Is this a factory grinder or is this a homemade piece? Nothing clones up on a google search

KR that is an old washing machine motor with added arbors for the wheel. Make sure the set screws do't come loose and NEVER use a stone on it.

My local flea was pretty dead today on account of the impending Super Bowl and the California cold (mid 50’s). I struggled to come home with a literal handful of junk.

Proto LA feeler gauges, plomb 1214 and a bent 3030, a few misc. blue point, craftsman and bar all wrenches, and a cheap doe wrench set in a cool clip. Set me back all of three bucks.

Dan, that wrench clip looks (can't see to well in the photo) like an SK wood grain one I picked up once. Looking at catalog pics, the wrenches were only marked with the size and USA.

I had to get away from Craftsman. Unfortunately these prices were to good to leave behind.

I haven’t started collecting SK. I traded for some newer stuff to complete some sets for my oldest son and my son-in-law.

If you were closer to the Pacific Northwest I would offer to help lighten you haul you just picked up [emoji23] shipping from tx up here would probably kill me in that 10 drawer top chest. You really made a haul on all that heritage era stuff! I don’t know what you paid but I have a strong hunch that you ***** are in order! Well done sir!

I wonder if those wood grain clip wrenches were tied to the wood grain rally boxes that were pushed in the 70's?

That’d be cool. The wrenches don’t look like any sk I’ve ever seen though. More like department store wrenches. I’ve never seen any wood grain sk stuff. I’ll have to do some searching.

Yeah, that holder is close to the one I have. But the wrenches I saw were smooth, satin types. So, with Don's input a defintate maybe.

I met up with Tin Medic yesterday on the second day of the tool sale of former aerospace engineer and lifelong drag racer, Curtis Franke.

On the first day I was surprised at the lack of US made tools. CM was represented but most of the hand tools--wrenches, etc. were from off shore. Speaking to Mr. Franke's son in law, who was running the sale, it seems family and friends had several first cracks at the massive collection--as is to be expected.

I picked up a no-name modified tool box and a small Snap-On tin box both full of HS drill bits (>200), a bunch of wire wheels and included some files, a set of pin drills, a Proto 9851 screw starter and a set of 1/2" drive hex sockets (missing the ell) that first day. The sockets have no markings except the size but look like the Duro set that was discussed a few posts ago.

01 Feb 20-2.jpg

I also got a pair of what I have always referred to as "horn magnets". I've seen examples several times in my life and I spent some time looking for them on google but only found **** like unicorn and French Horn fridge magnets...

Can anyone tell me the proper name for these very powerful magnets and what they were originally designed for?

01 Feb 20-1.jpg

Yesterday I went back to meet Tin Medic and to see what might have surfaced after the initial rush. Up in the attic I found this cool Chinese abacus and then tossed in a plastic 16-slot wrench rack and 7-8 packs of 3M wet-dry sand paper ranging from 1200-2000 grit.

01 Feb 20-3.jpg

It was great to finally meet another GJ member in person and I'll keep my eyes open for Tin Medic at future sales.

The slipjoints may be stamped too faintly to read under the surface rust/grime. Or not stamped at all. I’d gently scrape or wire brush them to see if they are CeeTee or something else. If you really want to investigate them, there may be forge marks. They are pretty standard-looking to me. A real expert might recognize the manufacturer by the specific pattern. Are the handles smooth or pressed with a grip pattern?
Post a closer pic of the yellow handle mystery pliers. They look like (telephone) wire strippers at this distance.
The JSB dikes look like an old pattern.

Thanks for the links on Southern and Boker tools.

The slip joint pliers have smooth handles with forge marks and the only markings I've found is a small "1" forged in to one handle. They are soaking in Evaporust now so I'll see if there's anything else.

The yellow handle turned out to be a Klien Tools stripper, so they went into the electrial toolbox.
https://www.kleintools.com/catalog/adjustable-wire-stripperscutters/wire-stripper-and-cutter-spring

I've attached some close-ups of the JSB markings and a bonus mystery tool that was also in the box.

The mystery item looks like it has been used as a punch but since It's pointy on both ends and square in the middle don't think it was meant to be one.

One of my favorite things is going through an old toolbox to find the gems in the junk.

It must be one of mine too, nothing else explains spending hours sorting, cleaning, identifying a mess of rusty/dirty tools and toolbox.

I guess it's the hunter instinct, and hoping to find a treasure among the trash.

Free table and chairs off of my town's "Buy Nothing" Facebook group. It'll go in the rec room we're finishing over our detached 3-car garage. SWMBO spotted it and was the first responder who said "I've got a truck and can come get it right now."

SWMBO's gotten and gotten rid of quite a bit of stuff thru the Buy Nothing group. Usually, though, there isn't any garage/tool stuff on there--just household, clothes and other detris.38bfbf04e999cbf59475e81353cf9d2f.jpg

I agree; it’s like hunting, maybe more like gleaning. You know someone has been there before you, but you hope they missed something.
But it’s like a lot of other things too. I think the root behavior is hard-wired into our anatomy. Our environment is comprised of a lot of things we are indifferent to, thoroughly mixed with a few things of high interest: I seek and grasp the red fruit on the bush, ignoring the green foliage; I pluck the mollusks off the rocks, ignoring the masses of algae; I pick the few flecks of gold from the pan, tossing the black sand. No one familiar with these activities finds them strange or irrational. Our bodies and brains work in harmony to distinguish and sort the useful from the useless. That’s the source of the pleasure - exercising our natural behavior.
But apply this same behavior to something that isn’t edible or wearable, and you get the look. And honestly, it’s true: equipped with only one right hand, do I really need a hundred handsaws? No.
But I think the hoarding behavior is natural, too: we are smart enough to imagine a future where said item will be scarce and needed. It’s when the potential benefits of hoarding the objects are outweighed by the inconvenience or actual hazards of storing them that the behavior becomes clinical.
So numismatics is widely perceived to be okay, because most people perceive at least the face value of the coins as positive. Philately is somewhat weird, but harmless, because though cancelled stamps cannot be reused, they don’t take up much space. PEZ dispensers, obsolete ammunition, explosive chemicals, used adult diapers...progressively fringy.
On that kind of continuum, I think tools (rusty or not) are okay.

Blue point 16oz ball peen with a bad handle
Hmm. What a coincidence. Did you see post #514, linked here? I didn't say the handle was split, but it was visible in the photo. Here's a better photo. I plan to glue it and put a tight wire whipping around it.

I do! Nice score on the pamphlet!
I just mentioned Whelen in a post on Drives' 'Metal Cabinets' thread recently. Before he was a famous outdoorsman, rifleman, and writer - he was the commander of the Army's famous Frankford Arsenal in the 1920's. And he was partners in a huge company called Parker-Whelen that was supplying the 41-C-15 cabinet a lot of WWII guys hanker after. See here.

I would have passed this by if not for Lugz' post from last month.
That's a nice Snoopy tool, BB. Black Bakelite. Looks good.

Strange-- When SWMBO says she's gotten rid of a load, I can't tell the difference. And when I tell her I've gotten rid of a load she can't tell the difference.

I need Someone to Watch Over Me as I read this thread, preferably a translator, because the language you guys are speaking is Alien to me. It's been A Good Year so far, LS, you're a good host and Counselor, and a Legend for the philosophical musings. I wish I had All the Money in the World to spend on tools, and sometimes I need it with those American Gangster vendors out there.

Haha. Okay, changing gears..., literally, I posted photos and info (part numbers, specs) on those lathe gears I found yesterday. I'm trying to identify them. If anyone knows vintage lathes, please check it out, linked here.

First pass on that UL gas can. I was thinking the UL data plate would be brass and pop and it is and it does, and I still think this would look great fully restored, but it's probably 1967 at the oldest, clean as a whistle inside, and I'm having second thoughts to just use the dang thing.
