I hate when RagTop plays catch-up! It's like an overdose of adrenaline!

Why did you put paint on my old rare tool box??
A sentence I never want to have to say in my life!

Socket:
Little 1/4 drv cross shaped JO socket
Wingnut socket. Not to mistrust you, but I bet that's 9/32-inch drive. I have a bunch of them, all JO Mfg. I had so many of them I was adding them to trade pkgs a few years ago like a little signature throw-in (my username on another forum is Wingnutt). I posted some pics on the JO Mfg thread. See Index in Sticky on Vintage Forum. No coincidence you and I both hunt near air bases.

DOE wrench packed away in dec 58
We call them re-packs. Following WWII and again following the KW the Ordnance Dept coated tools that were taken out of circulation in preservative and packaging (like your cheesecloth or wax paper etc) for long-term storage. Definitely military. What are the exact numbers?

Medallion: Daisy Red Ryder bb gun
You'll shoot your eye out, Ralph! So what's the deal with the medallion? Target practice?

All Starret and Brown and Sharpe stuff. Also some neat old shooting glasses!
The thing that looks like a throwing ninja death star when the blades are unfolded is a screw pitch gauge. The thing that looks like a fish is a center gauge, for checking angles, and is known colloquially in some circles as a fishtail gauge.

Love the glasses! Believe it or not, we do have a thread for googles and glasses. See Index in Sticky on Vintage Forum.

RT: Ahh yes I think I saw you posting about one here at some point in another years thread! This one I think was on the 1/4 drv Williams extn I'll have to find it and try it out to be sure.

RT: 42-**-100 dble.end 1/2 19/32 pkg 12/52 MR
** I cant make out maybe 33 ?

Not sure what its all about commemorative thing it looks like!

RT: I thought all that for 10 bucks was a good deal so its now at home in the Gerstner bros box.

Love the glasses! Believe it or not, we do have a thread for googles and glasses. See Index in Sticky on Vintage Forum.

RT: I thought they were pretty neat!

That’s some good catching up Rags. Always some interesting items. Very funny paint dept story too. I was considering posting a couple wingnut sockets I recently dug out, and hit Lugz up for a reminder where the discussion on them was. I think we agreed it was in the GS thread. Time for a vintage wingnut thread!

Today I hit up a Habitat on lunch. I walked in, saw the Klein metric wrench set in the display case, marked 19.99. I checked out the wrenches, all beautiful like new condition, all there, plus an extra 9mm. I agreed to buy them and asked if any sales were going today. Sometimes they are running a special.

The man says yes, today is 40% off a $40 or more purchase. I thought well, that stinks because I’m only at 19.99, and normally spend 1-3 dollars in back :( because that’s all I find.

Holy smokes, today was just the opposite! It looked like they cleaned out an estate, maybe a contractor or electrician by the type of tools. Lots of Klein and other quality stuff. I can only imagine what was there earlier this week.

I quickly met and exceeded the $40 while finding a bunch of bargains.

Deal of the day, Snap On 36mm 3/4” drive socket with 1/2 to 3/4” adapter: $2.99!!!

1/4 ratchets: JS, Easco, Thorsen, SK socket

Snap On Pliers

Craftsman vintage paint scraper, Eklind hex keys

Drivers: Hunter folding t handle driver, Tatools 1/4 spinner, quick wedge driver, Kent Moore whatsit, Channellock screwholding, Matco, Vaco and Xcelite stubbies, Klein Torx and Robertson set

Vaco and Xcelite sets, ES metric wrench set, Klein metric wrench set.

Edit: the Kobalt locking pliers I found on the shoulder of the road down the street from work!

I won't spam you guys with sea glass, stones, mermaids purses, lightning whelks, and fossils, but if only to support your analogy, LS, I agree, picking is natural, and it is all related! This is how I spent my morning - in surprisingly familiar activities!

Lugz,

If you like picking stuff out of the water, head over to YouTube and search on "mudlarking the thames". People pick stuff out of the Thames river bottom in London at low tide. Clay pipes, buttons, coins, bottles, bones, pottery...

"Here we have a coin from the early 1700's... Oh, and here's fragment of a pot, oh, this is from the Romans..."

I posted a book review on that subject on the 2019 thread in December, linked here.

But I’m really impressed by the four unbroken sand dollars.

A bit of trivia for you sand dollar fans. They are very closely related to sea urchins. I used to have the shell or "test" of a sea urchin and it had the same markings that you see on a sand dollar. Sadly, the delicate structure of the test did not withstand the rigors of my last move...

Spotted a little bit of decor today. NFS, though I see some similar flexible-spout half-gallon tin oil cans have been on the ‘Bay from time to time.
No indication of wall thickness, AFAIK. Unless it’s in the PAW-16 or the 451?
An identical one in rustier condition
A one-quart version

Will never use the Kong but I thought it was too cool to not to buy. It was only 4,95.

We were in Marin County again today so we checked out an estate sale in Novato, CA. Found a few keepers for my collections and a few to let go of. I’ve found a few of these Walden sets. It’s missing two little sockets and the Allen wrench. The Ball Pein is a two lb. Heller in need of a handle. My wife found the cool brass 1941 calendar/ruler. The early S-K DBE wrenches go from 3/8” to 1” and are cad plated. The S-K Tools box will be an upgrade for a rusty box set and the 10” Ridgid is from 1945.

Been a quiet couple of months for "man" sales what with the holidays and winter having set in. Finally a man sale today, estate sale of an airline mechanic. Lightly attended right off the bat due to pretty heavy snow and slippery roads so was like eighth in line or so, one of the few times I like all the snow :bounce:

Two tool boxes full of Snap-On and Mac SAE tools but minimal metric to be found. Assuming that was because the gentleman had been an aircraft mechanic. Prices were pretty high for SAE stuff since it seems a lot of guys if they are going to spend big money on Snap-on are now looking for metric stuff. Since most everything was SAE only thing worth it to me was a Snap-on SAE angle wrench set that looks never used. Not a smoking you **** deal but very reasonable deal for something I didn't have and actually never see at sales.

Thought today was going to be a bust in terms of sales worth even checking out but late this afternoon I spotted an estate sale on CL nearby and was able to make it there before they shut down at 3pm. The crowntop toolbox was still there. Got a near full roll of duct tape, 2 Kromedge mill files, CM 5/32" punch, can of Oops! cleaner, baggy of steel wool, baggy of screw eyes, couple of box cutter blades and a tiny brass hammer. The tiny hammer is pretty cool in the there is the gap in the claw. Very little rust on the box. At some point I'm gonna have to say no to bringing these boxes home. $10 total.

Two sales this AM, didn't try to make either at the starting bell. First on netted me these:

'29 Snap-on 5/8's set (missing one socket and a box) Pre long C Craftsman BE T-handle, 9/16 Proto LA flare nut wrench, 1MT 1/4 bit. $15 Almost forgot, there were two Hinsdales in with the extra sockets.

The second stop was just as fruitful:

Craftsman socket box (repainted) with an Easco paintbrush handle and 6 metric sockets, three vintage .30/06 boxes with 34 rounds (not reloads), a full bottle of Hoppe's, a geometric C chuck, and ...

This box:

I picked it up because of the label, not great, but not too bad either:

Paid $14 for all that. I don't think she knew there were rounds in the boxes. Anyway, I sure I can find someone in Portland who might want that box...

I hit two sales today. The first was big on Shopsmith multi tools. The guy had about every attachment you could get--and like many Shopsmith tools, they were hardly used. I picked up the two 4" Taiwanese cross vises for $25 each. I'm keeping the black Jacob Iron Works model as it is NIB and gave the other one to my neighbor since he helps me out with welding and when I need a bigger drill press. Scored the nearly full gallon of mineral spirits for $2. The 10' Stanley tape and the French-made soft wire cup were a buck apiece.

At the second stop I got the pretty decent B&D Workmate for $25 and a 5 X 8 foot US flag for $15. I didn't realize the flag was that big--I was just looking to replace my current one that is on its last legs. I'll have to continue to keep an eye out for one that will fit on my house.

I didn’t recognize it at first but that craftsman stack is a desired one but someone put new handles on it and put those awful locks on them. Sounds like you did ok on the price though!

Yessir.. what’s nice is those aluminum pulls were drilled for the original pull holes.. so—in time I may find original pulls for the top and bottom if I keep them. The locks on top are well-fit-and yes they’re old door/window locks or appliance locks and they were fitted quite nice.. if removed-it’s nothing my welder can’t fix.. [emoji106]

FRIDAY was GOOD to you guys!
A low-key day planned here, on the heels of a week-long chest cold. Good luck to all who venture into the wild today.

Picked this up today. 70.- on marketplace.
Glanced over it and I think I’ll bin 80% of it.
IMG_1082.jpg

Jack, what makes you think it was worth the 70 bucks? Especially when you throw away most of it. You feeling alright?

Excellent question. See answer below.

IMG_1083.jpg

At least one item of it in the lot.
