Slow day at the flea here, low vendor count and low customer turnout; only thing I picked up was a WW2 blanket. Went downtown to buy a gift card from (i.e. give a cash advance to) a local business, and a burger from another. The only "corporate" money I supported today was $2 to Krispy Kreme for some coffee.

Lugz, that "GMTK junior" is interesting. Any backstory yet?

No. I've never seen one before, even in an SNL, etc. It's a little lower, a little narrower, and several inches shorter. Two of four feet present. Clearly made by either Hamilton or McAleer. There's not a lot of interest in them here, but I'm going to post some comparison photos on the G.

Still slow here and more weather ain't helping -

One garage sale and one Estate. Both completely uncrowded, but I didn't leave till 9... Good deals though!

Yards sale - Contractor getting ready to move to Montana -

US Army mummy bag, these are typically down filled, and it tips my scale at 10 lbs, so I'm guessing the arctic class bag.

attachment.php

A bunch of Pilot drills - some are Milwaukee, an Adel Nibler for light materials, SO magnetic stick - Going into the Coleman tools for fishing junk out of fuel tanks, New Enders chisel, Mac, punch, Starrett punch converted from a 3/32 drift (which I already have - adding this to the wood cylinder case anyway) A knife, Tap handle, Starrett conversion chart, and a set of steel shim stock from .002 to .009 less the .005

attachment.php

#2 Steel Wool, Propane, Coleman AC to 12V adapter for coolers, and a drill guide. $7 for all the above including the Mummy bag!

attachment.php

At the estate sale, Got this stuff for a fiver:

Ideal Cable sheath stripper, some key or lamp chains, Starret Calipers, adn what I believe is the Plvmb Weed puller? - No markings and dog chewed (at least I HOPE its dog chewed...), anf then the gas pliers are "RS Co." with an anvil, and marked "warranted" - English? :dunno:

attachment.php

And a Driver Table saw fence - This MAY be adaptable to my 1936 T saw? I'll have to play around with it..., and then that odd protractor thing? (Yes it has a protractor scale sctibed into it...) - Not sure if this is for layout or for a guide? I'll have to do some digging as I suspect it has something to do with the driver T saw...

Beautiful day to be out in Central Florida !
Came home with a mixed bag of goodies. Not much tool wise but some fun vintage items. Had to research some of these.
A German copying saw, Pembaro, looks like it's a hobby saw and you buy the patterns to cut out. Came with a dogs pattern.
A Genesy Electric Lantern Co light and a heavy duty no name hanging scale that goes to 50 lbs.
Some Bonney single offset wrenches, SO sliding T, old Blue Point DOE and a Wardsmaster adjustable.
A 50 ft tape to add to the collection and a $5 box od taps that I bought because that small box has box joints. I think they dont do that any more...
Very nice Cman Crown Top Black & White tape, love that styling.

Brian

If you sleep in that bag in COLD weather, I promise your feet will be cold. Just seeing a pic of one makes me shiver! The first winter I spent in Korea, that was the best we had; we were issued the "new" 3 piece (black bag, green bag and Gore-Tex bivy cover) bags the following summer. Was NEVER cold in that, even in mid-January, sleeping in drawers and t-shirt and a stocking (PT) hat.

I passed on an estate sale this weekend due to the usually a larger crowds and instead opted to hit up a garage sale out in the country. Picked up these two ratchets; Craftsman & Husky both USA. A nice Zippo in its box, a set of gear gages, couple of small Cman screwdrivers and a No-Name drum brake tool.

Well this is an awful photo, but a cool find. I bought it thinking it was a MAC wood handle screwdriver, because through all the dirt and oil buildup I read SABINA, O. After a cleaning ( yes, I killed the "patina"), I could read MECHANICS TOOL AND FORGE CO. SABINA, O. WOW! An early MAC tools driver, and my first.

Well I guess I don't actually sleep in cold weather, because I've had a US Army Extreme Arctic for close to 30 years, that I only stopped using it because I needed something that would actually compress for hauling in my Samurai...

I can't really recall ever getting cold except my head if my cap came off, or my sinuses aching because it was so cold I had icicles inside from condensation from my breath. (Making a wool tent replacement for my cartop tent seems to have resolved that last issue.

Were you guys in the summer weight bags in winter? I could see that for sure....

Not a purchase, but rather a freebie
A PLUMB hammer which my neighbor found at a local trash station (the punch next to it is just for sizing, used as I was fixing a minor thing on Black and Decker table)
This is most likely the same PLUMB company which sued PLOMB and forced it to change the name
Does anybody know how old this hammer might be?

Black and Decker Workmate 200 and garage light came for free from the same neighbor who was cleaning the garage and wanted them gone

Well for this bag it's a moot point: It has two major rips inside which exposed thick cotton batting. So NOT a down bag for sure! On top of that the zipper was non functional and the slide broke when I attempted to close it up so it would operate properly - I'll, salvage a couple of things off this and the rest gets canned...

It also lacks ANY markings whatsoever. Maybe they were tags that someone ripped out? :dunno:

Hopes for this one - dashed...

Yeah, just recreational hiking/camping but ALWAYS bring a stocking cap. My favorite is wool + Thinsulate. A bit itchy, but REALLY warm.

Last Sunday, someone listed a set of Craftsman body tools on FB Marketplace. Because of their location and my schedule, I knew I wouldn't be able to make the deal in a timely manner, so I messaged the seller, offering double the asking price of $50 if she would wait until I could make the trip.

Yesterday, I made the trip and am I glad I did!

When I arrived, the seller and her husband were loading a pickup full of "scrap metal", among which were tool boxes, power tools & electric motors, boxes of hand tools, axes & picks, and lots of misc hardware. In the shop were more boxes of misc hardware, tools, more tools, and a Herbrand 3 drawer rolling cabinet & 6 drawer top chest full of stuff.

I threw all my cards on the table and offered $300 for anything and everything I could fit into my Camry, to which they agreed. I spent two hours digging through the "scrap metal" in the truck, the boxes in the garage, and somehow or another got the seller to agree to look for the original keys to the Herbrand stack - WHICH SHE FOUND!

I've only just begun sorting and cleaning stuff up.

All this, just because I offered double for body tools that were worth 10 times the asking price.

My haul:

- Craftsman body tools, ca. 1948
- Misc Plomb & Blue Point body tools
- Herbrand 3d rolling cabinet & 6d top chest, ca. pre-war
- Proto Whitworth combo wrenches and sockets that I set aside from the rest to put on my tool board.
- Boxes of tools (lots of Plomb and P&C, Snap-on, Mac, Cornwell) that are still in the car.
- Misc axes and pick axes (not pictured)
- Craftsman bench grinder (not pictured)

Brian--
This is a re-post of my reply to you on the Vintage Toolboxes thread, same subject. I thought I would post it here just to let all the garage sale, estate sale, flea market, pawn shop, and dumpster diving enthusiasts on this forum know that they're doing more than just collecting, hoarding or scrounging around for a good deal--they're saving history.

Congratulations on a great score Rileysan and thanks for saving another bit of history from the scrap heap!

Although I love it when myself or others benefit from a situation where someone with no interest in their family's past or the stock and trade that enabled their parents and grandparents to give them the life they currently lead, it saddens me to think of those too-many-times when no one is around to prevent things like this from being ****-canned. :(

Keep up the good work, everyone!

Shelbylex,
Here are some hammers I rehandled for Tin Medic. The wartime Plumb is in the middle. The postwar Plumb with the weight marking is on the right in the second picture.

I did what I could to preserve a little history yesterday--nothing like Rileysan!

The tote and everything to the left were from the final day of the sale where I missed out on the CM Heritage tool boxes on Thursday--and there was basically what the average person would consider only trash left in the garage. But Mrs. Radar was with me and she wanted to check out the house, so I went through the detritus that was left on the workbench. The tote is probably from one of the Heritage boxes but will serve in the Duplex top box I got the other week that was missing its tote. The CM chisel set is empty, but it won't be for long. The little Japanese 1/4" sockets were in the tote, so what the hell... An old Navigator can't pass up a pair of dividers and these are from Park Instrument Co. I can't believe the Priest's Columbian No. O was hiding under a bunch of ****. They cleaned up nicely and work smoothly. I still remember getting a haircut with something like them when I was 10 years old--worst haircut of my life! I forgot to include in the main pic the little antique scissors which were also buried under **** on the bench. It's 4.5 inches long, the tips are snapped off and I love 'em! $1.13 for those items.

attachment.php
14 Mar 20-2b.jpg

To the right of the tote is everything I managed to find at the first stop. Speaking of the one that got away... I mentioned that Mrs. R was with me yesterday. Well, she failed to demonstrate a sense of urgency getting out the door that morning and we were about 20 minutes late to the sale. The first thing I noticed in a big pile of "sold" items was a CM Long C #5171 4" Bench Vise with all original paint with a price tag of $12.50! I think I may have mentioned it to her on two or three occasions that day... Oh well.

The 1/2" extensions are Fleet #1667 & #1666.
The locking pliers are S-K Tools No.7608.
Champion De Arment (before they were Channellock!) No. 420 Channellocks with original patent #1,950,362
Brass Jewelers Anvil? Stamped with the letters W.L.W. then H.B.G then MISS.
Set of furniture cups
Stanley No. 30-040 thin 10' tape
Lufkin thin 2m tape with 1984 VMCCA (Vintage Motor Car Club of America) Glidden Tour
Finally, an interesting tape measure from the Dart Manufacturing Company of Mason, Michigan. It has a clear window on the top that shows the underside of the tape which has another scale that compensates for the width of the case. The window has two arrows--one aligned with the case-compensated measurement and the second aligned 1/16th shorter labeled "Scribe". If you push down on the case, a small dull metal "blade" comes out and makes a mark at the end of the case. Not sure what the 1/16 difference on the scale is all about, since the blade is aligned with the back of the case. Everything to the right of the tote was $1.50 each.

Thank you, Don. They look great!
I will need to clean it up and most likely get rid of the B on the other side. Luckily, I have couple of extra handles.
... One more project added. : )

Riley, you **** again!

Thank you, Provincial! It feels good to get back into the game, so-to-speak. It's a shame about the big Portland Swap Meet, isn't it?

Keep up the good work, everyone!

Thank you! I have a similar opinion about "saving history". While most of what I saved was common, it feels irresponsible to scrap or throw away perfectly good tools. People, especially the younger generations, have gotten so used to being a part of a consumer society that they haven't got a clue how to use tools, let alone repair most things.

I've always believed I could fix anything, and I put that belief into practice even when it's not as cost effective to replace an item or hire someone else to do the work.

I still don't know what to make of the current worldwide crisis, but if things take a turn for the worse, I'll be well practiced and prepared to put my skills to work!

Thanks for the soapbox!

Yes Brian, it is disappointing. I had even rescheduled a meeting so I could go to PDX. Now I have no excuse, and have to show up! :(

I'm in the "at-risk" category, so I'll have to be more careful until this blows over. (deep sigh) No one in the extended family has been near an area with a case - yet.

Stay safe!
