I forgot she was AF when I asked that. Those are Army designations for basic (Golf) and advanced (J2) courses. She would've had different designations. J2 was for interpreters and interrogators. Meanwhile, my wife said I'm wrong. Apparently it was something I am remembering only from my J2 course and it may have only been our instructor. I was there from '82 to '85. Two languages back to back, then J2. (Sorry for the digression, LS!)

I found these diagonals at an estate sale last month. I don’t recognize the logo. Any guesses?

Hey, everyone! Back with a VERY exciting item I bought today.

For $85 I am the proud owner of a Skilsaw 825! It is in good condition overall. The worm screw looks flawless and had oil in the gearbox. I replaced the cord as soon as I got home with it.The shoe is level and doesn't have any dings or dents, and it even came with the original oil. I am very excited to clean it up and put it to good use. I bought the wrong blade, though. The new blade isn't a diamond center. Oops...

So does anyone have any info? I know the reputation of the brand and knew I found a great deal, but other than that I don't know much about dating this thing. 20200404_163559.jpg20200404_163656.jpeg20200404_163811.jpg20200404_164058.jpg20200404_163957~2.jpeg20200404_172503~2.jpeg20200404_184152.jpeg20200404_171122.jpeg

Interesting puzzles - brings to mind the old saw that the first step in solving one is to realize it is a puzzle.
The aviator's tale completely eluded me- interesting read, but puzzle?? I know the letters stand for Hyper Text Markup Language, but beyond that I'm clueless.

Care to elucidate?

I don’t know anything about skilsaw models but as a vintage tool enthusiast, I love that it came with the box and lubricant. Nice find!

I’m sorry for inadvertently tossing a red herring into that: the aviation puzzle is not the final puzzle from the series, so the html reference is irrelevant.
I actually don’t remember any of the answers to the puzzles (so I guess it’s time to do them again), but I do remember how I solved this one, so here’s a clue: In Los Angeles it’s LAX, but where I live it’s ABE.

Alright, Lugz: did you solve it today, back when it was live, or did you dig it up on the web? I tried using the WayBackMachine (my first time!), but couldn’t dig up the full article.
BTW (“by the way”, not Batu Licin, Indonesia), I recreated three frustrating errors in my solution this morning, just like I did back in Oct2012. The most important aid to avoiding them is to choose IATA. Then, just ignore it if you see SEA anywhere in your answer.
I’ve searched the web, and can’t find the puzzles. I have found discussions of them, including Ken Jennings’ “post mortem.” Glad now that I printed them all out and saved them for nearly two decades!

To legitimize this discursion, I would assert that you might find the Oct2012 issue of Smithsonian magazine in a garage sale (white cover showing a composite image of Thos Jefferson). Or buy one on eBay. Sadly, the Great American History Puzzle Contest was an online event, so there’s only a taste of it in the paper magazine.

This morning, but not until you offered a clue. I would hardly call it solving after that. Yesterday was the first time I had ever seen it. I was all over the place last night. I sketched a quick map and then traced the route of the story on it to see if it had a shape. It didn't. Then I treated it like an SAT test. Was it even possible given the types of aircraft named, described or implied, the season/time junctures, the geography, etc? I plotted key words in a matrix of columns and rows (names, places, functions, vehicles, time, etc) to see if something would pop out at me. This morning over a fresh cup of coffee I started to think maybe it was an amalgamation of famous historical events in history or movies. Discovering that all the details were wildgoosechasingly meaningless is annoying!

I see where you got tripped up. You don't want to miss a small island airstrip when you're low on fuel, unless you're breaking the speed of Sound.

Was there a second part?

What was the PASSWORD to?

That was puzzle#4 out of 11 total. There were no clues, as I recall. They were revealed one-a-day on the Smithsonian site, where Jennings had a blog. Its all broken links now.
The first puzzle worked with the printed magazine (referencing particular pages, words, letters). Here is his own explanation. (He mentions Kit Williams!)
Scandalously (but really, just creatively), the final puzzle was pre-solved (by more than one person, but not by me) prior to its full reveal by extricating the jpg file from the html of the webpage, where is was visually obscured. Thus the winner was able to post his solution immediately upon reveal.
Each solution led to a link to an article on something displayed at the museum. The final prize was an all-expense-paid-trip-for-four to the museum, valued at $10000.
Jennings’ “post-mortem” contains spoilers.

Cool. Thanks. It reminds me a little of the game our father used to play with us on our birthdays. The first clue would be in an envelope. You'd have to solve that one to find out where in the house the next clue was. He'd have us traipsing all over the house. The gift was at the end of the chain.

Here is another rusty old box I found under the old workbench I talked about a few days ago.

Long C craftsman quarter inch set with much of the original wrinkle paint intact on the inside. I cleaned it up for the photo shoot and included the only quarter inch ratchet I found over there.

After the lockdown is over, I’d be happy to send this box out to a new home if one of you guys wants to fill it with the proper tools.

Here’s one I’m working on filling. I need a flexible spinner, extension and 3/8” socket, all with the BE code. And, of course, the crossbar.

My pleasure. Your find inspired me to find a placeholder flex spinner and placeholder crossbar for now. They are both unmarked.

I didn't think I would ever get to post in this years thread. I managed two score TWO pieces of this exact slatwall new in box for $100 for both. I am in the middle of a workbench build and these will be perfect. If anyone knows a low cost alternative to the extremely high prices accessories I'd love to know? Or did I just waste my money?

I'd check with retail supply/store fixture outlets in your area.

And dumpsters behind strip mall retailers. There was a rash of department store closures over the last year - lots advertised fixtures at closure sales. Probably cleaner.

What are the sizes of the sockets. I can’t read them, even in the catalog pdf. “4 12pt sockets 5/16 - 7/16”? I expect 3/8 is in there, but is the other 11/32 or 13/32?

I was inspired to dig out this little’n, which had zero paint and a thick growth of rust on the top. I sanded the outside and sprayed it “Stops Rust“ Navy today. Original inside except where one shot of overspray hit the front of the socket corral. I’ll give it a couple days to cure right, then scuff it up and BLO it.

Off topic I know but we lost John Prine yesterday to this damned Coronavirus killer! One of my favorite singer-songwriters. Sad, sad day.

just you. Rest of the world is dodging a deadly virus. :lol_hitti

Poor choice of words there. Of course its slow.
Haven’t been to a thrift shop or flea market in well over a month. Have you guys shifted more to online secondhand listings and shipping to your house or a buying pause completely?

My ATTENTION has shifted to eBay, but not a lot of spending. I am still horrified by shipping costs, which are often higher than the items. I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m saving fuel and dining costs, but I miss the VENUE of the flea market. There would normally be a few community-wide garage sales by now, too, but they're cancelled. I’ve looked over a few listings on Craigs List, but haven’t spotted much.
So, I’m focusing on cleaning, repairing, organizing.
Here’s a small basswood/linden/lime (tilia, identifiable by its pungent soapy odor) slide box (Supplee Hardware slim taper files c1856-1905, based on label) that was filthy and broken. It sat forgotten for quite a while, but yesterday, I rediscovered it and diverted some attention to it, pulling the nails, adding wood where it was missing. Lucky me, the kerf of one of my saws was just right to extend the groove.
I reglued the box joints. Less lucky, now I find the lid is bowed so it only slides half closed. May be the reason it broke.
The long label on the lid was lifting in a couple spots, so I tried superglue, which worked well in flattening it, but slightly darkened it where applied. I shellacked over it, thinking it might flatten out the wrinkles where there was no superglue, but no. Something to remember in the future.
