Nice upgrade Blue! That 4L80E is an upgrade that I've been wanting to do to my camaro too. The th400 with 4.10 gears is not very street friendly.

Since the GS/ES scene has petrified, I’ve been doing a little house cleaning.

Before I moved to TX—been eight years now—I donated my old Taiwanese clone of a Shopsmith Mark V to Habitat for Humanity. It served me well but like all multi-purpose devises of its kind, its drawback was in the time and effort expended to constantly change from one function to another—and then usually back. Anyway, I decided to donate it so I didn’t have to move it. Since I hadn’t used it in some time I was unable to locate a milk crate of parts that went with it. Of course during the set up at the new house, the parts made a reappearance. :rolleyes2

New home, new job, yada, yada, no time to deal with them, they got shoved into the back of the shed. Until now. I dusted and shined them up and listed them on eBay. Nine listings from a stamped steel arbor wrench, to a ½” chuck, to saw guards, power coupler and a miter gauge. I’m happily surprised that six have sold in a week.

I was afraid that everyone would turn up their noses at off-shore copies, but I guess it’s mostly those of us that haunt the Vintage Tool section of GJ that are that picky! :D

Bonus is the Post Office is a 2.5 mile round trip jog—so I’ve been getting my exercise, too! Stay Safe everyone!

I went to an estate sale earlier this year and bought a box full of stuff for $40. It included a watchmakers lathe and some scale weights and this item which I was unable to identify as to its purpose. I originally thought it was used with the lathe as a speed control but I don't see how that would work. Since some of the smartest people on the internet hang out here, I thought I would ask you guys.

The case has what appears to be nameplates(?) but I could not find ANY markings. The side electrode? is adjustable but again not marked. The oblong object next to it is a foot switch that is connected to a 110v plug.

Anyone know?
Tom

Looks like a giant linear rheostat in a box. Could be some kind of primitive speed control.

Flux capacitor.

Or giant linear rheostat as tym said. But the connectors look odd, a clamp and a probe? I can see the sliding knob varying the resistance.

What does the thing on top do, twist or pull?

Could be a small heater.

Does the lathe have a place to plug the probe in to it?

Electric marking pen. The ground clamp and top of unit should be electrically connected. Put your piece on the top and use the pen to melt the marking into the metal. If the part is too big use the clamp.

That makes sense. Must be what Frankenstein's monster used to mark "L" and "R" on his neck bolts...

No garage / estate sales around here these days, so I've been feeding my addiction by looking through junk piles and getting freebies from the neighbors as they sit at home cleaning out their garages out of boredom.

I'll have to start taking more pictures but here are the few I have from the last week:

(1) Old copper fire extinguisher
(2) New in box Coleman 5 person tent
(3) StoneMaster four stone wet grinder
(4) 1940s Shopsmith 10E

The first three were junk pile finds and the latter was from a neighbor. I made him fully aware that I didn't find room for it and would be flipping it, but he just wanted it gone and didn't want to deal with any third parties. Sold it pretty quickly.

I made the mistake of sending pictures of the grinder to nine4GMC and now he wants it for his girlfriend. Some people.... :)

We are way off the pace for sure!

Merc! Free is always good!

Last summer we converted a copper extinguisher similar to that to a pressurized Water Tank for a camp washing/Showering Station - We even added a pump from a large brass camp stove tank I had converted to a fuel dispenser, and the pump was left over.

This was for a buddy that wants all Pre WWII camp gear (he has a 1920 tent trailer and its ALL original except for the canopy cloth!)

He liked my washing station, and decided the copper tank was "of the age"...

The thing on top is firmly affixed and doesn't move. (It looks a lot like a soldering iron tip.) The clamp is connected to the movable side of the rheostat(?). The pen looking thing is wired to the thing sticking out of the top.
I believe this was in a jewelry store. Could it be a resistance welder or soldering unit? Maybe used to repair jewelry?

I don't see anything on the lathe that appears remotely able to use this.:headscrat:confused:

THERE WAS AN ESTATE SALE NEAR MY HOME!!!

I was like a starved man, feasting on a buffet. Greedy. But I forced myself to back off, slow down and only take what I needed. And here is what I (apparently) needed:

Weaver 4x scope, misc. SK Proto Plomb and New Britain sockets, glass scraper, Cornwell dolls head prybar, Stanley knife and a Woolrigh hunting hat. I probably paid too much, but oh well...

In the ad they would say that only eight people could be in the house at a time, and they were letting people just walk in, so I am not too sure they kept a good count.

I live in a semi rural area (real rural after leaving the Bay Area) and I don't get the feeling people are too worried about it right now. I see some with masks, but not many. Mostly folks seem to want to get back to normal.

I have a Marlin 783 I was looking for decent optics for, and this Weaver will look just right.

I have 2 Savage Model 99's; an older one (beaver tail forearm) in 250-3000 and a "newer" one in 284 Winchester which was the first gun I ever bought. (used, but not very old at the time - My dad was irritated he wanted me to buy a model 70 o 06...)

I had bought and mounted matching 3X9's on both at one point and called it good. Later I decided I wanted a 3X9 on an Anchutch 22 sporter I'd picked up, and I had the Weaver 4X around. I put that on the .284 and the 3X9 on the Anchutz.

Both 99's are tack drivers, (both stay well inside an inch at 100Y) and while I use the 250 for long range on ground squirrels (200, some times 300 yards) the 284 is strictly big game, so the 4X is fine...

The Anchutz? Mostly I shoot CB caps (Or did, I can't use Lead Ammo hunting any more here...) and used it to pop tree squirrels in the head (In a rifle that are quieter than a pellet gun), I and needed the higher mag to thread branches and leaves. I have shot longer range with it, and with ammo it likes it will print 2" at 100 yards... A bit tricky adjusting for the big drop, but its way above most 22's! I shot one sub-velocity competition with it once, and won handily.

I posted this on the vise thread already but it fits pretty well here too

Been on a dry spell of estate/garage sales lately so this was a welcomed acquisition.

After finishing up my Morgan 160 last week, it dawned on me that I didn’t have a place to put it. Destined to have it be my main user, I searched for a new HD place to mount it to.

After numerous marketplace and Craigslist searches to no avail, I looked out behind the shop at work and sitting in the to be scrapped pile is an old welding bench we took out about a year ago.

Ask the boss, he says “give it a good home, it’s yours” You can imagine my excitement, not only do I have a new bench that fits my needs, but it was free!

6ft long, 36” deep, 38” high, 1/4” plate top.

Will work perfectly in my garage! I was even able to salvage most of the built in wood bench that was there previously to make the lower shelf.

Slim pickings these days but I still look at Facebook Marketplace, usually pass even if it's something I would be interested in because I don't want to drive around too much.

Today spotted something I needed and it was porch pickup near a grocery store i needed to visit anyway.

Big score was a USA Hickory hammer handle for $3 LOL.20200417_180443.jpg20200417_180558.jpeg20200417_180630.jpeg20200417_180756.jpg

Picked up this 10 drawer top chest today with original key! Box is in fairly nice shape minus the dent in the top from someone trying to break into it[emoji849][emoji36] almost no rust and most of the surface rust will polish off the handles! Makes me want to find the matching 9 drawer lower roller! Even came with a key! Date coded ‘59

Nice pick ups, guys! BMW, that Weaver 4x is a keeper for sure.

I've gotten so bad that I spent hou....er, way too much time yesterday watching YouTube videos of some guy going through his auction winnings from 2017 and 2018, evaluating what was good and what was junk. Lots of Starrett...

Was that Mr Pete? He has an awesome channel if you want to learn machining.

Smoke, I have the matching 12 drawer to that, just as good as the Craftsman boxes, but I have only seen seven drawer rollers, so we are in competition for the nine drawer!

I don't buy from the auction site very often But. While looking at Wizard stuff the other day I found this set. I really like small tools and Wizard stuff so....Was unable to control myself and got this ignition set for what I thought was a reasonable price. The first pics are from the listing and then after it was cleaned up. It looks almost NOS but I thought it was wierd that two of the wrenches are exactly the same :headscrat

Looks like a 7 drawer could be converted with this insert listed in the catalog here? I found this in another thread. I would be curious to see how it attaches? Does it slide in or screw in?

Between January 2nd and March 14th I had eighteen (18) flea market hauls. "Lugz 2020_01" through "Lugz 2020_19" in thread-searchable terms. 18! Since then? Zero. 0. Zilch. Nada. Neetch.

Goldurned virus!

Thanks to a tip from Unaiu, I did make a very rewarding eBay purchase a few weeks ago that just arrived by USPS in the latex gloved-hands of my son, who happens to also be our faithful mailman! :)

I've been looking for one for a long, long time. After I clean it up, I'll be back with a link to more photos.

I believe drawer rails are allready installed, and you just need drawers and slides. So, if you found a seven drawer and another junker, combine them!

Edit: not sure if the drawers are different though, that might be worth looking into...

Interesting idea. Would make sense that the slides are already installed. Do you have one you can look at?

Went to pick up a Snap On SL936 ratchet that was for sale on marketplace. Handle had a slight bend in it so I passed on that one.

Tuesday I answered an ad in Offerup for a large fireproof cabinet. Fortunately, I figured out what I was getting into, and brought a loading ramp, appliance dolly, a come-along, and plenty of rigging. It is 43" wide, 18-1/2" deep, and 65" tall, and quite heavy. I had to drag it across a gravel lot because the seller had an inoperable vehicle blocking access, then winch it up into the pickup on the ramp with the dolly laying on its back. The listing said "free" but when I called he said there had been several calls, and "the first $40.00 takes it."

Someone had pried it open in the past. I had to do some straightening to repair that, and secured some loose spot welds with sheet metal screws. Overall, not too bad!
