Thanks to the addition of Roy Olson's ratchet, my 14-piece 3/4" Firestone Socket Wrench Set is complete! Thanks Roy!!

Since the box has less than 5% of the original paint left--and what's there is deteriorating fast, and the inside sticker is gone, I'll probably end up painting it in the future. For the moment, I'm very happy with it. Thanks again Roy!

Dude, that is simply amazing!

I'm not a patina guy (nor am I any good at painting, but that's a whole different problem), I'd love to see that smoothed out with new paint!

You ****. I see some holesaws for steel and a unibit. Either of those would have justified the purchase. The rest is icing on the cake..

Yup, I use the carbide hole saws a lot. They last a long time, but not forever- $35 a whack for the less expensive Kleins.

Are these saws worth anything? Inheritance pieces (courtesy of ongoing basement cleanout), the Sears one was may Dad's, the Rockwell was probably my Grandfather's.

Mike

That Rockwell is a 70s Porter cable. Probably much better than the Sears. And for those that complain neither of them have gears, I'm from the East Coast and consider that a blessing.

I have the same base that was about to be tossed in the dumpster at school
OMG amazing at what people throw away.

I was taking an adult machining class, found a ton of BRAND NEW goodies in the dumpster.
Brand new mini bike motor IIRC TOO.
Bunch of drill bits, taps died, tools. Don't remember what all, but good score it was.

How about a Perfect Handle screwdriver, slightly weathered, dug up out of the ground just now on my property? I think it'll buff out...b1dd4529146c6f834dcf244960c115cd.jpg

The VFD will give me slow speed for Plane irons and the like!
Good Luck with you search!
Can you or anyone recommend a suitable VFD I do have 220 but The one on my Oliver Wood lathe, does run off 20Amp 110 Volt.
Would be nice to find one that runs off 110 Volt!
Will Google too.

With a little restoration I’m sure it’ll look just like this wartime one.

Picked this lot for $15 total today from marketplace. I had been trying to get up there for a week as we usually have jobs near by but I ended up making a semi special trip. I many went for that 15" crescent as I don't have one that big, I ended with mostly older USA made tools, pretty happy with it.
To you seasoned tool junkies out there, what can you tell me about the Irwin screwdriver, Japanese (maybe?) wrench, funky cast aluminium expanding pliers, and the age of those snapon wrenches? Teach this grasshopper some things!IMG_20200519_183412.jpgIMG_20200519_183428.jpgIMG_20200519_183435.jpgIMG_20200519_183516.jpgIMG_20200519_183553.jpegIMG_20200519_183602.jpeg

The expanding pliers are Battery Terminal Clamp Spreader Pliers.

From what I've seen online, they appear to be from the 1950s.

The possibly Japanese logo isn’t quite clear enough in the photo, but it doesn’t look like one I recognize. I may be imagining things, but it looks a little like a Kirin. Usually, made in Japan tools say Japan on them.
The Snap-on will be easier to date if you find and post he date code stamps that may be on them. They are usually single-character stylized numerals. There are a couple charts of the codes floating around. Here’s one. Without the date codes, I’d guess 1950s/1960s. The box end wrench looks to have a nickel finish, so maybe the oldest of the three.
The Craftsman underline looks nice too.

I keep a better saw with a better blade, and a lessor saw with a masonry blade. Cutting masonry or stone with masonary / diamond blade is hard on the bearings, and I don't like subjecting my better saw to that sort of damage.

Maybe I have a problem??

20200518_173108.jpg

I have 12 mowers, a tiller, a snow blower, and a pressure washer. I also have 4 mowers in the garage that needs little things or just waiting to sell it.

8 of these mowers popped in the herd in the last 4 days. Also the tiller came in 2 days ago.

Between me and my daughter we've sold 14 mowers, and she's gotten a bit of folding money for it all.
Just a overall view of our lovely pile.....

20200519_195045.jpg

On a side note I got the scotts mower back together. It was challenging but it now drives and the mower deck is working. I need to cut the grass a few times to make sure its good shape.

20200520_083014.jpg

These mowers and small engine equipments have been found on trash day or Facebook market. A couple of them are from the buyer giving us the old mower when they bought the new mowers. Sure they might be just part mowers but those part mowers have helped us keep cost down!

So there are still deals to be found, just having to look at different locations for these deals!

I have been doing the same thing but to a lesser extent. My moms house got a new (used) mower, her original one got fixed, my friend who is moving from an apartment to a house is getting a mower, and my other friend should be doing the same in a month or so. Selling 14 is pretty darn good!

Thank you this is exactly what I needed! Ill get some better pictures of the snap on a c-man a little later today.
Any recommendations on the best way to clean the slight surface rust? I'm thinking some very fine steel wool and WD-40?

To you seasoned tool junkies out there, what can you tell me about the Irwin screwdriver,

If it’s in the 3rd to last picture, it’s a Perfect Handle style, and a big one, a favorite for putting a wrench on the flats for breaking stuff loose. Originally made by H D Smith, not sure exactly when Irwin started copying. Perfect Handle was I think 1900s, so I’d guess 15 years after that the patent are expired, others can make them. Not finding them in a Irwin catalogs yet.

Here is some story on Smith

http://www.swingleydev.com/ot/get/190534/thread/

And the patent, even looks like yours

That style of extra heavy duty screwdriver was issued in WW2 GMTK toolsets. They were shown with decals on the handles in the 1940 catalog. During WW2 they were ink stamped on the handle. Your screwdriver with the Irwin stamped into the shank is postwar.

Your daughter is getting much, much more than some folding money.

Many years from now she will be sending the grand kids over to help Gramps with "THE MOWERS...":lol_hitti

That Scotts mower will polish up nicely too!

Good Job!

I'm thinking some very fine steel wool and WD-40?

That will work on almost anything metal.
I’m not generally so gentle on wrenches, because they are usually banged up already. I use a fine wire wheel on a bench grinder. If I’m trying to preserve the natural darkening of bare steel, I’ll scrape the rust down with a plain steel screwdriver then use a hand-held stainless bristle brush. I use a cylindrical battery brush for box ends and socket broachings. More often lately, I apply a VERY THIN coat of BLO (boiled linseed oil) to most things if they can bake in the sun, because handling them bare-handed leaves perspiration salts that can undo the work you put into them. If the tools are chrome-plated without serious chips or dings, skip the BLO and just keep them clean.

That’s my approach as well. Evaporust treatment leaves a handsome darkened finish on most rusty things as well. I like BLO and also Fluid Film for preservation.

A new junk shop opened up in town, but for reasons we all know too well, I had not been able to visit. Well, I changed that today. Decent place, with a room full of tools in the back. Mostly well sorted, but with random boxes on the floor, I found the above for $15. Snap-on ratchet ($10), a Proto 4", Plomb pebble breaker bar, Plomb LA DBE, Hinsdale 11/16 and no name stubby bit driver. All those for $5. God, I love junk shops.

All, thanks for the info, great story about the Irwin screwdriver as well.
Looks like the snapon is 1964

Don't know what the craftsman logos are but most of them are =v= one is -v- (top) one is -vv-44597 (2nd) third from top is c1, 4th from top is also c1 but on the other side it's stamped k.

Looks like a few of them are recent but more are from the 60s-80s?

Cool, time to get them cleaned up and in to a tool box!

Do you all want pictures of the other ones as well? Mac, sk, husky, vlchek, nonames.IMG_20200521_103135.jpgIMG_20200521_111303.jpgIMG_20200521_111325.jpg

That’s quite a bargain. All the better being that your wife picked them up for you. In case you haven’t realized it yet, she sounds like a “keeper”. :)
