Another item rescued from Dad / Grandpa's old house...

True Temper Flint Edge axe. I don't really "need" this (I have a chainsaw and other wood cutting tools), nor do I remember either of them living in a place that they would have needed it.

Maybe it's from one of their parents?

Looks like it's had a cheesy repair at some point? Nails holding the head in place?

But, I really like the shape and color of the handle. The size and shape of the head is pretty cool too.

Last pic with my maul and Fiskars splitting axe, just for a sense of size.

Any idea of age?

Mike

Before getting out of town for the weekend, I was able to hit a few sales as the valley starts to open up. Here is what I found:

Armstrong bolt cutters with good edges, Indestro socket, dog nail trimmers in a cool box, long C Craftsman tin snips, and an Indestro hex ratchet. Also, a good score in the book dept.

Capablanca chess book from 1935. 100 years later and he is considered one, if not the greatest player of all time.
And finally, an eBay package arrived:

I really love socket spinner sets, and with a decal like that, there was no way I was going to pass it up, even though the breaker bar I thought I had for it was slightly wrong (New Britain, as opposed to None Better)

That's the steel composition, which Duro-Indestro used as a branding convention. I don't see any knurling, though. Kind of hard to tell with all the rust. Probably economy line, if that's cad. Edit: Post photos after they're cleaned up and derusted.

Okay, here are the cleaned up sockets: All are 1/2" drive with 12 points.

First the before shot, next the after shot with same orientation then the family groups. The first family is marked only with Chromium Vanadium and the size. The only other distinguishing characteristic is the shinier finish on the top half--that doesn't show up very well on the photo, but the socket on the ratchet end is a dull finish.
21 May 20-2d.jpg 21 May 20-2g.jpg 21 May 20-2h.jpg

These two were tough to read but together I can make out "CHROMEXQUALITY" and under that is "VANADIUM STEEL". No other marks.
21 May 20-2i.jpg

Then there is a lone 3/4" None Better. My first--I don't have any like those above, either, but at least I recognize this one!
21 May 20-2j.jpg

Pics of the ratchet Date code? I don't know of any codes with "X" mostly stylized numbers...

Clearly an X--not a stylized 8--at least not like any I've seen on the Snap-on decoder graphics. Any ideas?

The Chromium-Vanadium and the Chrome-X-Quality sockets are all 1930's era Duro-Chrome made, all very likely Western Auto contract production, all very likely cadmium economy line finish, or very cheaply applied thin nickel plating maybe.

Sorry OR, not a clue - Definitely an "X" though! Maybe the SO thread, or SnapMom? If you do get an answer report it back here too!

Thanks Lugz! What ever the finish, it is thin, cheaply applied and most of it is gone!

Thanks for looking Outlaw! I guess I'll have to introduce myself to the SO thread.

Thanks. This axe may have been in the shed (it's all a blur after so many days cleaning out, LOL). I was just grabbing rusty old gardening tools and placing them on the sidewalk (most disappeared as we worked). The axe caught my eye and I threw it into the truck.

Just The Tip, I Promise!! [emoji1787]

After work today I was cruising through the neighborhood on the way home and ran into some bulk trash gold. I picked and picked my truck full when I came to a sweet lateral file cabinet. Having no where to put it I screenshot the address and took my load home where someone was meeting me for a rare find I found last month(more on that later). So I’m unloading and my girl says she wants to go picking with me and the person meeting can’t make it so instantly I’m heading back to the file cabinet!! We get back over there and as my girl is tying out the drawers, the front door opens and a loud voice asks if we’d like more free cabinets... well, yeah!!!! Who does she think I am?!?!.... anyway, we go back and check out the cabinets in the garage and I’m all excited, the owners start showing us around the house where other desks and cabinets are and tell us about the estate sale company that just came by and loaded up a 30’ long box truck full of stuff!!! Roller coaster of emotions, then they mention a shed out back with stuff in it, holy **** the day got brighter!!! Off we go to the man shed!!! We walk in and it’s pretty picked over by the estate sale co but there are a few gems left. 8e08616d71197f72c35b9feda20b13ff.jpg
Shot glass for size comparison, that’s a small USA vise up top, some huge set screw thingy to the right, the old man said the three things are from an aircraft carrier and they catch the cables or cable tie downs or something of that nature and finally what he said was the tip of an ordinance... is that the bomb or what?[emoji3517][emoji1787]

Now I have to do some catch-up posting because there was a surge in estate sales with tools this weekend.

First one was pretty picked over and I only came away with a mismatched group of 3/8" drive deep sockets. $5.

9 May 20.jpg

I went to the next one primarily for a Allyn chrome B-52G presentation model but at $500, it was too rich for my blood. I went back on half-price day but the family decided not to include the BUFF. It's on eBay now--waiting for an opening bid of $450, plus $50 shipping. Good luck to them. I did come away with two Craftsman Crown tool boxes. A 6512 and a oscillating sander box. $25 for the pair.

22 May 20.jpg

At the next sale I waited behind a guy digging for Husky sockets, so I'm happy I don't collect them. I found one he missed and tossed it to him. I picked up a Proto Challenger 3/8" metric socket set 7-19mm with a CM substitute in the 18mm slot; a rail of mixed 3/8" deep sockets--most CM but also three Indestro. That's a 3/8" S-K 12" extension and a 9" Wizard breaker. I'm a sucker for old tape measures and was happy to find a Wizard 8' by Lufkin. $5 for the lot.

23 May 20-1a.jpg 23 May 20-1c.jpg

It was a tool box weekend. CM 6500 and CM Crown 6520. Four small Bonny wrenches and three others with numbers but no names. $11.

23 May 20-2a.jpg

Went back the next day for 75% off and picked the L.S. Starrett calipers and the rest for $4.

24 May 20-1.jpg

All caught up but sadly, this week has no tool sales.

I found these diagonals at an estate sale last month. I don’t recognize the logo. Any guesses?
-Don

That logo has been bothering me since you posted it. I think it is one of the variations Harrold used. Most of their logos I’ve seen are circular, rather than triangular. Like Lugz (who responded immediately to your post), I generally don’t purchase them. But a while back I demonstrated that they are the OEM for Sears’ “Happi-Time” kids’ pliers.
Do you have a pic of the grip pattern?

Provincial, et al,
Harrold Tool Company of Columbiana OH, seems an under-researched (or under-reported) manufacturer. AA has nothing. Twertsy has a few paragraphs on TA. Vintage Machinery mentions it because of family connections with Crescent Machine Company (NOT Crescent wrenches).
Whatever its earlier incarnations, HTC was founded as a maker of hand tools by brothers Samuel Harrold (29Aug1850-20Mar1924) and (Rev) Albert W Harrold (18May1860-13Sep1939). As noted in some sources, HTC ended up purchased by the Budd Co.
The pliers are rather pedestrian and apparently inexpensively made and finished, not graceful, innovative (though their brothers Amos and Elmer have no less than 14 patents featured on DATAMP!) or ergonomic, perhaps why they’ve drawn so little attention. But I have to say, there is SOMETHING aesthetic in their very economy and adherence to SIMPLICITY.
The Harrold family seems to have been Church of the Brethren (Albert was ordained 31Oct1903), but Samuel’s wife Nancy (nee Culp, who lived past her 100th birthday) was Mennonite, and he is buried in a Mennonite cemetery.
...By way of observing that there’s more detailed information available about the Harrold family than the tool company.

Nine4gmc, I have a nose cone similar to yours, it has a 4 1/2" diameter base and is 5 1/2" tall from tip to base. It has a hole through the top half where they inserted a rod for easy removal. I picked it up in the Middle East during Desert Storm.

They were converting 2000lb gravity bombs into smart bombs and had to remove the nose cone to install the guidance system. Because they no longer had any use for the nose cones, they were just tossing them. They were giving them away to anyone who asked for one so I snagged one.

not been many(any) yard sales lately around here, but scored this stuff on a FB marketplace yard sale post. Missed some other things I wanted to get even though I told the guy I wanted them and showed up at the time he specified.
Not bad for $20 though!
1/4" ratchets is a Proto, most of the 3/8" in the red box is Proto
The 3/8" ratchet and breaker bars are old 'BE' Craftsman items, think the swivel adapter is as well.

Found a garage sale listing mechanics tools for next week Friday. Gave them a call and they said to stop by whenever. Managed to pick this small assortment up.

Some kind of tire tool, eh?
I am in spitting distance from Jake’s Flea Market (closed).
MrsLS surprised me with a mini-road-trip to Longacre’s Dairy to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary. Longacre’s is closed during prime flea hours, so I’ve rarely had an opportunity at their milkshakes.
A sign of the times.

I'm pretty sure it's a wheel weight tool. The garage sale was just down the street from Jake's... You probably drove right by me as I waited for traffic to clear!

bas,
You realize you got the very elusive 11/16 Craftsman saltus wrench right? That alone on Ebay will make you a profit.

Well, I couldn't take it much longer so I made an Eprey buy: decent deal, the catalytic heater (they thought it was a stove - and it is a "Heater- Stove" but don't go spilling on the dome...) was essentially free, and the lantern a good deal even shipped.

A Coleman 242B the fount is brass so not war years, But the dates don't make sense for a "B"(neither the 3 or the 6 fit as a "year date" for B's) so I need to get some better expert opinions on if maybe this was a replacement collar and its not a B? :dunno:

The Vent is in real good shape for a 242. very small clips and not many. we will see if the Oven cleaner trick works for shining the nickle up...

Thank you, BB. Four kids, eight dogs, and one pandemic later, but seems just yesterday we were saying “I do.”
In present-yesterday I started this stew of Barcalo, Kraeuter, and Danielson. Threw in a couple big Bonney, too. Mmmm.

Congrats. I feel like that is a huge accomplishment these days both in marriage and having raised 4 kiddos.

You hit the nail on the head with your Harrold ID. The dykes look to be much higher quality than the cheapo pliers. Happy Anniversary!

Well things are starting to open up here in SD even with No stay in place ordenances.
Hit up a couple pawn shops and 3 garage sales.
Stop 1 pawn shop.
Duro arrow combo. Snap on and craftsman bit sockets. Craftsman crowsfeet. Proto 1/4" ratchet with some Wayne sockets. =V= stud puller. And the best pick of the this stop. A FSN wrench that was hanging on the wall. I have never heard of the brand. The shop keeper was reluctant to sell but ended up letting me buy it. $15

Stop 2 garage sale.
Snap on electrical screwdriver. Some socket rails for the Plomb wall and a weird xcelite drill speeder. Williams dog wrench. Stanley screwdriver. $3

Stop 3 pawn shop.
SK 1/2" X 3/4" adapter. Snap on socket, and a older craftsman sparker screwdriver. $2

Stop 4 garage sale
Down the street I seen he had some snappy stuff listed on FB so I stopped by. Picked up a variety of stuff. Some high lights. A snap on interchange bit screwdriver. Craftsman professional long pattern 13mm combo. Some misc speciality sockets. A snap on octagon very long flat screwdriver. My favorite is the snap on articulating mirror. The glass is broke but still a unique piece. $21.50 in all.

Stop 5 garage sale and the best for last.
I have a theory you can tell alot about a garage sale by the signs they put on the corner. My wife laughed at this theory but I think she is starting to accept it. I seen a sign on my way home hand painted poorly out of older scrap plywood that said sale and I immediately changed my coarse to see if my theory would hold true and boy did it. Pulling into the oldest part of town there was a house that needed paint about 40 years ago and a detached single stall garage with the drive having stacked flats of rusty gold. The yard was filled also. Scrounging through some boxes I decided to test the pricing structure and pulled up a coffee can of vise grips that appear to be all petersens. The guy said are you interested and I said why sure I am how much for the whole can. He said $5 and the race was one. Digging through boxes putting together a pile and guarding it with my life. I found a big set of DBEs that are tiger, SK, and bonney. Next I spotted this massive plane union #8. I am not a plane guy but I thought I would try my luck. I asked how much. $5 I said I would take it. Picking up some more stuff like a diamond farrier pliers (I think) craftsman breaker bar. A few Yankee style drills from MF and Greenlee (still in the original box and looks new). Out the door for a $25! After doing a little eBay checking the plane looks to be a decent payout. This is the best garage sale I have ever seen!

Hope you all are staying safe and sane. Happy Hunting to those who can get out and hit some sales.IMG_20200529_161856951.jpegIMG_20200529_161901552.jpegIMG_20200529_161905478.jpegIMG_20200529_161926570.jpegIMG_20200529_162115107.jpgIMG_20200529_162119176.jpgIMG_20200529_162123946.jpgIMG_20200529_162127245.jpg

An ornament for your "bomb" (later identified as "WWII aircaft radial engine") table!!

Mystery solved. Good work.

Hey now, Nines can't have my bomb table :)

Sales here have been slow to non-existent. But free stuff is aplenty. My favorite childhood (and beyond) hardware store recently closed and I've been stopping by and getting some neat things from the owner as they clean out. Very sad to see it go, but there's both a Lowes and Home Depot within a mile of it so I'm actually surprised it lasted this long.

Some small hardware cabinets, 20 Streater 3' x 4' heavy duty metal framed peg board panels, about 40-50 additional peg board panels, countless peg board hooks, and probably close to 200 Toledo / Toledo Beaver pipe dies...most new in box.

Also, I picked up a free mower from the NextDoor app.
