OK I Broke Quarantine!

ONE yardsale with tools, Local, I "suited up" and went..

No crowd but had people (mostly neighbors? I did see one "Regular" that does reselling) - seemed to be a family managed semi/estate/clear-out...

Not bad, Prices were good to cheep. I left one Blue SK socket box that had busted catches. and a few odds and ends of tools that didn't interest me. I only spent $17.

The Hoppes box is ful of patches! (generally these are empty of have 1 or 2 left or replacements...) The Winchester box is empty but cool, The Brownie is for the collection of SWMBO, the heavy blue thread is for carpets or heavy upholstery I believe, and the decorative Violin is for the "toy" instrument collection I have with the real instruments...

attachment.php

A NOS Army Angle Flashlight with the boxed set of lenses! - It pays to open random unmarked boxes!

attachment.php

An old B&D mini angle drill - the plate on the side is a flap switch. it runs I just want to make sure the cord is properly grounded since its old school metal case.

attachment.php

A B&D "Professional" 4" mini grinder - this has a replacement switch, I'd like to see if I can scrounge a factory replacement as well as the paddle activator... It also needs a new cord while I'm in there - This brings me to 8 mini's and 4 are B&D pros. I consider these to be semi consumable as the gears are over strained and don't last forever even with re-packing.

attachment.php

An RV sewer drain storage tube. I have a purpose for this but its too short by a couple of inches, however it may free up a longer fishing pole tube SWMBO has in use? - After a good clean of course...

attachment.php

Screw Storage! Provably for the ladies "art room", but I thought very well executed! Well worth a buck!

One more thing on the next post:

A square Frying pan: This is a good size for the camp stoves, even the little one. Not sure of the brand just yet, but made in USA and the seasoning is in pretty good shape! A little touch up is all that's needed.

Ah, joy! MrsLS & I made the pilgrimage to Saylorsburg PA this morning to the Blue Ridge Flea Market. Very well attended; people have been flea-starved and were making up for it. Best rumor (unsupported by website) I heard: Jake’s is opening next weekend. Also Leesport (really is) and Perkiomenville (dunno) are opening.
Yet I relaunched with a tighter fist than I would have guessed after such a long dry spell, spending only $8 total ($2 of it was on the two 3/8dr Bonney sockets, which I would normally have passed or haggled on, but I’ve been staring at eBay prices too long, and according to my notes, these aren’t dupes of anything I had. So really, $6 + a splurge.
KeenKutter S-wrench, Utica electrical connector pliers, JPD Autokit patpnd Vanadium combo, CeeTee checkerdot slipjoints, some kinda “Firestick” thingy (have to figure out how it works), 1/2dr socket I’ll have to clean to see if it is a circle-H Craftsman, C’man nailset, Barcalo DOE, Winchester-branded pliers (looking very Kraeuter to my eye), Bonaloy DOE, Bonney K53 guage, Stanley recessed pull.

NOT PURCHASED: this cool Klein toolbag. Same vendor had a very small potbellied stove marked $10. When I checked the legs, one was broken, and all were too small to fit the $10 potbellied stove I already own, which has its own broken leg. Otherwise, I would have snapped it up for the $5 he offered. On the way out, I saw it was gone.

Happy for you, but also jealous (and a little mad as hell) just an hour or so away in a state with a partial lock down, including outdoor markets, that was just extended another 30 days.

Took a chance this morning to buy a small Delta drill press that wasn't too far from the house. Just before I headed out he let me know he had other stuff to sell that had belonged to his father-in-law. With my face mask and gloves I hit the road with high hopes for some old tools and such. The drill press is made in China which I already suspected but it's not had much use. It has some light surface rust which will be easy to clean up. This is completely out of place with my Delta woodworking machines from the 1940s. There were some tools but nothing great or particularly old. A couple of years ago I was trying in earnest to find one or two of the Craftsman stools which I never did. So finding two there was a treat. The 6" Craftsman vise will get flipped along with the DP. He was selling 4 different sets of Craftsman roller & top chests but they were all newer and they're just kind of junk IMO. But I did find some 6-pt deep socket sets in 3/8" & 1/4" and a few other goodies. They were trying to get the house emptied for sell so after we'd agreed on a price I asked if he wanted me to take all the screws, nuts, bolts, etc out of the shop for him and he said "Sure!". Four 5-gallon buckets and 2 storage units of miscellaneous came home with me as well.

Starting upper right corner of the goodies pic, box of misc drill bits, 2 new sets of Craftsman drill bits, new pkg of screw-outs, 3 new Peterson vise grips, air nozzle, Blue-Mol hole-saw set, 4 CMan clamps, 3/8" CMan 6-pt deep sockets, metric and SAE, both 9-pc sets "-G-" (although the G is upside down ???), 1/4" CMan breaker bar =v=, extension mirror, extended magnet grabber, 1/4" CMan 6-pt deep sockets, metric and SAE, both 10-pc sets "-G-" (again upside down "-G-"), CMan SAE 6-pt socket set 10-pc "-G1-", couple of 3M sanding pads and 5 12-pt deep sockets, 3 on left are "=V=" and 1/2" drive the 2 on the right are "-EE-" 3/8" drive.

Everything looks like it's had little to no use at all. While I don't expect this is a return to normalcy for me it was nice to be out pickin' again!

Lugz. Columbus opened last weekend. Collingwood opened yesterday. I picked up a B&D workmate from Don this morning for $10. Also found a copy of a Stanley angle divider for $2.

Not a garage sale find, but I figured this was the best place to post this...

People of a certain age will remember how back in the late 1950s and early 1960s every town's city hall or school had a bunch of these stored in the basement, along with barrels containing various other provisions in case of a nuclear attack.

My neighbor was doing some cleaning today and put this out at the curb, so I grabbed it - I figure it will make for a good trash barrel in the garage.

I was looking at the Civil Defense logos on that barrel, and it reminded me of how the radio dial in my 1961 Pontiac has Conelrad markings at 640 and 1240 AM.

Nice finds! I'm still not keen on going to fleas or sales where everybody's touching stuff, so will enjoy vicariously a little while longer.

Hello, txlonghorn1989!
I am from Abilene, Texas. Looks like you made out great with your CM finds. About the G sockets. Here's what I know/believe. G (right side up) is Easco made from the 80s and I consider them same quality as -V-. G,G1,G2 (upside down) is made by Danaher from 90s on. Yeehaa!!!

Stopped by at about the midway point (of the advertised hours), the place was picked pretty well clean. I don't know how much haggling they do early, but wasn't impressed with price tags on a few of the items still there:

HF 20 ton press, $225 (brand new today $189 at HF).

Very old Craftsman lawn tractor, $150 (obviously hadsn't moved in years (4 flat tires and covered in mildew, etc).

There were a handful of tools left, similarly overpriced.

Maybe I'll go back at closing time? It's 15 minutes away.

Mike

As you go to different estate sales, start making a list of which companies you like or dislike. As time goes on, it’ll help you decide if it’s worth driving to their sales. I usually give a seller a couple of tries before I cut them off.

As for pricing, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people buy used (not vintage, antique or unusual) items they could have bought cheaper from a store. This is especially true at live auctions. When I see it happen, it makes me feel like I’m in The Twilight Zone!

Hey b.well! So are the upside down G and G1 by Danaher US made? The thing is that just a few months ago I made note to try and pick up some deep 6-pt sockets and BAM! Nice.

txlonghorn1989, Yes, all Easco and Danaher are USA made. Both much better than China made. Easco (-V-) stuff is older and considered better quality(stronger steel). My Craftsman mechanic set is from 2005, USA made Danaher and I've never broke anything; still USA strong :)

And you should know it's USA made. Everything Craftsman made in USA should have that forged on it. Well, except some easy read sockets (like my 2005 set). made in USA is printed on them like the socket size, not forged into it.

Found a couple of sales the last two days. First place yesterday had a lot of Craftsman--mostly newer and pricey. I picked up the CM 24oz ball peen for $6.

Second place was priced to sell.
Craftsman Crown 55161 tool box (no tote), $2
Proto R Professional 86A Cold Chisel 13/16", $2
Nice little Hecsharp (West Germany) Jewelers vise, $2

Today I went back to the first place and got the CM -v- 44984 1/2"dr flex head for $10 and the CM #3 Phillips for a buck.

I checked to see if the Tahoe flea market was open and found out that it is closed for good. Kinda sad for me. It had been going for 40 years.

Sorry to hear that - suspect that will hurt us both :)

Outlaw, that skillet is a nice score. My first thought was unmarked Wagner, but I'm not so sure with the thumb groove on top of the handle. I received a Coleman 530 back in December which I'm (unsuccessfully) trying to get running.

Somebody upthread asked about masks and gloves at estate sales. My preferred operator asks buyers to wear masks, so I wrap a red bandana around my face. The message might be more clear if I put on a black cowboy hat, lol. I haven't seen anything yet on pre-sale photos which would have me waiting in line hours before the sale opens, but have still picked up a few goodies on Day 1 of the sale. Around here, Day 2 of the sale (Saturday) is so picked over it's not worth bothering with, IMO.

I understand. I really should have mentioned that nearly everyone was conforming to the scattered signs, to “wear a mask.”
Gloves...not many had them, me neither, but -
Most everything is laid out in direct sunlight, so there’s UV. I brought my own bag. I took small enough bills (loose in pocket) to pay exact cash to minimize that contact. Handling rusty-crusty things at flea markets has already habituated me to avoid touching my face. I washed my hands before returning to my car and used hand sanitizer once there. When I got home, I laid my prizes out in the sun (turned them a couple hours later) before bringing them in. I stripped and showered. Again, considering how filthy some flea treasures can be, plus my mildew and seasonal pollen allergies, those follow-ups aren’t unusual for me. Finally, I wiped my phone down with alcohol, because I did use it in the field.
I’m less sanguine about indoor venues.

Man, that *****.

Oh, and maybe one in ten wear a mask or gloves around here. But, the state had a very low infection rate to start with.

On the way to coffee, saw a Weed Wacker sitting by the curb with some garbage bags. Same as mine, so a good parts source. Loaded her in and off to coffee. On closer inspection, it's almost new, has way better compression than my old guy, and was missing the nut that holds on the trimmer head. 1 nut later and I have a new Wacker. Why do people throw away good tools ????

Dang that's rough. It seems to be a going trend even before Covid.

Let me join the chorus to declare "you ****"!
I'd have grabbed that as well.
If I could suggest: To preserve the bottom I'd find a way to put it up on casters. Lockers in case you choose follow the instructions to use it as a commode..

It really does. I had developed friendships with several sellers and one in particular knew what I was on the lookout for and set those items aside for me. Hopefully something new will take its place, eventually.

There is the Reno swap, but that might be a little far afield for you.

Nice find.
(Winchester pliers)

I was completely ignorant about the history, except I have a DOE wrench somewhere...

Interesting discussion on an external site.
Now, I’ll have to search up a Winchester catalog from the ‘20s!
Edit - here’s 1923

I’ve seen bubblepacks of new Winchester-branded cutlery in bigbox stores, and never thought the value even approached the ridiculously-cheap (for retail) pricing, and wondered why? Now I understand that there was a time when Winchester was applied to quality USA items.

Ah, yes, here’s that DOE...real or fake?
Looks okay to me, except I don’t see the bracketing hyphens
-TRADE MARK- versus TRADE MARK
-MADE IN U.S.A.- MADE IN U.S.A.

I didn't go back to that estate sale yesterday. I don't know if that sort of rabid turnout is normal around here, or is a side effect of the Corona (people cooped up, few garage sales, etc.).

Old Radar: Nice score on that little vise! I see a few unique features.

Dubdoc: Why do people just throw those things away? Well everyone has their reasons. A lot of people don't have the skills beyond maybe changing a spark plug or oil. Possibly more than that, people tend to do a value calculation in their head, and decide a repair isn't worth their time (especially if they're paying someone else to do it). Others are just in a rush to get the job done.

A huge percentage of people have been lulled into believing these two fallacies of consumerism: "I got my money's with out of that" (sometimes true), or worse, "I deserve to reward myself with a new _______."

I, like most people, have probably been guilty of most of those things at some point.

I did have a manager who was militant about his time. He'd buy top-end equipment (so it would last longer) but did zero maintenance. As soon as it failed, he'd put it on the curb and buy a new one.

Mike
