Wow, there are a lot of nice things popping up, the Wards set, a Brazil box...

But, sometime something so rare shows up, that you would drive hours to get it in your hands...

This had been sitting on CL for the last six or so months, taunting me. Why do I say that? Because it was hours away. And even in this time of drought, I had a hard time justifying the distance and the gas involved. So, I would see it pop up on Craigslist, and sit there for a month before disappearing, only to show up a week or two later. He knew what he had, and that someone would take the bait. And last night, that was me. $60, and worth every penny. When I did HVAC/R one of the older techs had a set, and they were great to use.

Went to a House Sale today and got nothing. While curbside shopping I picked up 2 things.

The Craftsman cart with a makeshift shelf and this black "extendy" thing. A steer in what the "Extendy" thing actually is would be appreciated.

Tomorrow I will be going to Blue Ridge Flea Market in Saylorsburg for the first FM run of 2020. I'll be the guy in the tie dye mask.

Cheers

Jim

My first guess would be a support for a machine task light. Like the well known “retirement” light in shape.

I agree! Jim will need a wall mount for it.

Didnt someone post one of these for a stool/drafting table thingy a bit ago?

I think you are right.

My wife and I spent all day today driving around to various yard sales. Some sounded promising with TOOLS being prominent on some of the signs. In the end, I didnt so much as pick up a single item to inspect it. We probably went to 20 yard sales and I didn't find a damn thing.

So we went home and I started doing some work with the bobcat, and cutting up some dead trees and things. I took a 5 minute break and checked Facebook marketplace. The firsr ad to pop up was something I have been trying to find a deal on for a long time, and today was the day.

An HT101 Stihl extendable pole saw for the whopping price of $50! With a new bar and chain.

I said if its available, I'm on my way and sure enough I was the first person to respond. It had only been up for 5 minutes according to the site.

Anyway, he said he couldn't pull it, and he was right, something was locked up.

Took the llug out and it would turn fine, put plug back in and it would lock up. This saw being a 4 mix, or a four-stroke 2 cycle engine has a compression release system and the valves must be adjusted just right for it to work. I set the gap on the rocker arms and guess what....she runs, and runs well.

I couldn't be any happier. These are $600 saws.

Very nice. Those are very rare.

Looking for a Plomb 3061 Pebble Open End.

Somewhat ironic that the guy with the How-much-do-you-****?-o-meter trophy has never deployed the accolade himself.

My mother-in-law would never allow her middle school students to use that phrase in class, but she would tolerate "you inhale profusely". :-D

Nothing new on my horizon. I've actually sold more than I bought in the last month, to include no fewer than three cars and a 12" Crafty RAS motor that wasn't eligible for the recall bounty. All to fund an LS swap for the '60 Impala in two weeks.

Another thing I've been busy with is home improvement projects. This raised garden bed was built entirely from estate sales or FB Marketplace finds, even the 1/2" rebar spikes that hold the timbers together and the super-long bit that bored the holes. It was particularly gratifying when the big bundle of 30" rebar lengths that I bought 2 or three years ago had exactly the quantity needed to finish the job!

^ Same here, BB. Since we've been so hard-hit with COVID in MA, I think it might be late July / early August until things heat up in the flea market dept. The MIT flea market is cancelled until at least August.

Heck, even the VA I work at has been having us do work-from-home virtual outpatient appointments since late March.

I recall seeing one of those extendy things in an old time saloon behind the bar with a telephone mounted on it. The bartender would swing it out from the wall for patrons to phone the wife.

Was Jakes crowded? I’m going to wait another couple of weeks before I go.

It was busy - the delayed opening combined with the ideal weather (sunny & dry, low-70°s) to release voluminous pent-up flea-enthusiasm. More like a holiday-weekend Saturday than a normal June Saturday. People were opining that Sunday (today) would be even bigger. I’m staying home to address some projects, so I won’t see.
People were largely respectful, but not scrupulous, of personal space. I estimate 90% compliance with the casually-posted “please wear a mask” signs, something less than I observed last weekend at Blue Ridge. MrsLS disagreed with my estimate at the time I commented on it, feeling there was a nearly-equal (higher) degree of compliance.
Waiting a couple weeks is just shy of July 4th weekend, which is usually a big, big one.

not quite a yardsale, but pulled this off the curb last weekend. had a big free sign on it. my best find in a while. 1986 Derbi Variant moped. Complete sans a plastic cover. Poured some fuel in and it ran :bounce: Seems to need nothing but a new carb float, it started leaking out fuel and i found the float full of fuel after pulling the bowl.

You are a credit to the species!
I’m no economist, but it seems to me that private decluttering, maintenance and improvements more than offset, in quality-of-life / living standard, the supposedly-dilatory effects of the “shrinking” housing and petroleum markets (from folks not burning gas in traffic jams in their realtors’ cars, or speeding to get to the next McMansion before the Joneses). Doom-sayers were likewise claiming the agri-food industry would belly-up because people weren’t paying restaurants to throw away half the food supply.
Wait, maybe I am an economist - a don’t-waste-it / re-use-it economist.

I like the deliberate eloquence of that as much as the implicit samurai-like honorificness of turning "some guy" into sumgai. :)

I like that design! (And I'm not just saying that because my last name begins with an "H"...) Easy access all around. I've got a very similar size patch of space on the side of my house that the CINCHOUSE and I are still arguing over. It had a huge playpen/jungle gym type thing on it for nearly 30 years, now it's just rubber chips inside a railroad tie frame. I want to put in a clay bocce court that could double as badminton or bean bags etc. She wants sod. A second garden is a third, compromise alternative.

Wait, there is compramise in the outdoor spaces at Chez Lugz?

Here at the Zero residence, I have zero control of those areas...

(The wife is a ********* gardener, so I am regulated to building raised beds, chainsawing out old trees, lawnmowing and keeping the budget intact. Mostly.)

Haha. Some. She is pretty much in charge of everything in the ground around the entire house or hanging from porches, but she puts up with my tiger lilies on the street side yard (I'm on a corner) and an ancient sour apple tree in the back yard that she hates but it is still bearing fruit that I love to eat right off the ground or in pies, and the side yard between us and our neighbors has always been all mine. I built the former playpen (swings, slide, monkey bars) with my dad when my eldest son, now 32, was 8. I had a balancing wire and a zipline between trees. Now that my youngest is 17 I'm ashamed that I let it go this long. I lost a signature dogwood and a cottonwood that I never replaced. The only shade I am getting is from a white pine tree that sheds needles like crazy.

He and I put this outdoor ping pong table in this weekend. Crude but effective! The table was free (bulk pick up) a looooong time ago. Use to set the two halves (1" thick!) up on a vintage workbench with iron legs in the garage but I put the workbench in the basement a few years ago and they've been complaining ever since. It will look better with a load of woodchips I've been late on re-spreading in that area.

Thanks, fellas! The H design has, as Lugz noted, the dual functionality of access and a monogram (my last name and my wife's also starts with an H) you can see from space! It's 21 feet by 12 feet. The pavers were repurposed from our back patio, which will get covered up with a deck next year.

Nice table tennis court! Is it durable enough to stay out in the weather?

Waiting a couple weeks is just shy of July 4th weekend, which is usually a big, big one.

So Mrs No_Garage and I went to the Blue Ridge Flea Market in Saylorsburg PA today. We arrived at 8AM to a almost full parking lot and a lot of people shopping. I'm gonna say 75% of the vendor spots were full. About 1/3 of the people there were not following the "please wear masks" request. Some had masks around their necks and others had nothing. When we left at 10PM there was a line to get in of probably 50+ cars.

There was a lot of merch on display as Flea's just opened in PA in the last weeks or so.

Mrs got some pickles, 2 homemade masks and a small cast iron frying pan.

I got 2 small clamps for a $1. I just didn't see anything I needed today.

This afternoon we went curbside shopping and did quite well - but that's a story for later.

Cheers

Definitely seen those in old movies.

Jim, could it be marked American Electric like this one? Either way, cool old industrial piece.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Antique-American-Flex-Railroad-Scissor-Dispatch-Speaker-Phone-RARE/283905150495?hash=item421a10ce1f:g:gF0AAOSwA8hepLee

That looks identical to what I have. I don't see any markings on it but I will look closer. You guys are an endless fountain of information. I was search for light mount's and didn't see anything that matched - but you link on ebay is it (less the microphone).

Cheers

I coated the table tops in polyurethane, but I will probably throw a heavy duty tarp over it in rain and for the winter. I've been intrigued by them for a few years now, but the prices are outrageous.

Cool box. I’m ignorant of what these wrenches are called or what they are used for. Please educate me. Is it a must have tool for a certain application or will another basic tool work too?

Technically, they are called ProtoTAC ratcheting wrenches, but basically they are ratcheting flarenut wrenches. Here is a pic with it assembled for use

Are they a necessary tool? Only if you do a lot of hydraullic lines. But, good luck finding a set, they haven't made them in at least 60 years.

I believe this is my first post here of 2020.....:shocking:

Picked up this 8" Delta drill press for $20 today (Sat) at the flea market.

Need a bit of TLC but it runs smooth and has the least amount of run-out of any small drill press I've ever seen.

I plan to document the clean-up and post it on my Before & After thread.

20200603_153645.jpg 20200603_153706.jpg 20200603_153720.jpg

How well do you think it'll clean up? :)

20200603_153728.jpg 20200603_153734.jpg

I already own a 8" Delta drill press (same model - different year) that I've used for years....

Polyurethane degrades in UV exposure. Top-coating with spar urethane or other finish with UV-blockers might help it last longer. (Exterior paint?) Keeping a tarp over it when not in use will do the same.

If you didn't know it, Valley Forge is in PA, outside of Philly.

And if I recall correctly you found the same set back in 2018 when I was host, but it was even older. It had a Tubing Appliance Corp decal. Just TAC. Pre Proto-TAC. From before the acquisition by Pendleton Tool Industries, Inc. in 1955.

Went to local sale and found the Vermont American toolbox with all contents fo $12.50. Nothing special but a solid box that will make a good starter box for my son at a reasonable price. ce24c1f23781126e7fbcce69e35f32db.jpg8a01820c54ed48db04e34d9cb1105c5f.jpg

Indeed Lugz, and good memory. Here are both sets together

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2jceikU]

And obviously, one set is 1/4 drive based while the other is 3/8 based.

Random YS stop between the trash and post office on Sat. yielded a random selection of 3/8" drive:

Thoreson Breaker bar
Wizard extension
Vlchek 2800 ratchet
Mix of sockets; Snap On, Williams, SK, Craftsman, and other . . .

Nothing epic, good ice breaker from a long dry spell. :)
