Went back to the sale where I bought the cabs last week.

Guy gave this reel to me last week, I forgot it while loading.

Note the label explaining the green conductor being the ground, remember the two prong days? Also rates current in watts instead of amps. Fitting is jammed in housing, so don’t know if it works.

Brand new Blue Pointe filter grappers, don’t think I’ll have any resistance from filters with these, if they fit to get to filter.
A SO Palmrat, could of used that this weekend.
Pipe wrench pliers by Wilco, SO ring pliers, I picked up the extended blow guns, while I was picking he found a couple more connectors and gave them to me.
A supply of Milton connectors, a green handle thingy that looks like a scraper of sorts.
Some misc. heavy blind rivits in the bag.

In the beginning we settled on a price for the jaws pliers, SO rat and blow guns, I added a few tools and the other stuff.
I had a number in mind, he came up with one $5 less, I gave him what I was thinking as they were pretty fair with me.

Not a bad Monday lunch hour!

Enjoyed reading about you guys train of thoughts buying/selling stuff so we can buy more or what we really want, wow, how I identify with that.

Even though I can swing buying things I really want/need, there’s a satisfaction in making a decent purchase without touching the bank. I tend to leave money in PP as that fund. It’s also amazing to clear out dust collectors off a shelf and see it converted to cash on EBay and Market place. This is a good thing since I’ve become a mainly US made old tool snob on here. The other stuff just won’t do.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Everyone should get some of the REGIONAL RATE BOXES

Uaiu turned me onto those a couple years ago (when I didn’t know a hawk from a handsaw). In the roughest terms, they’re economical if you’re shipping less than halfway across the country. Beyond that, Flat Rate takes over. Another difference is that with RR you must purchase the shipping online, so you want to be sure of the weight.

Really depends on the weight. I just shipped a 6pk of canned soda (read beer) from Ohio to the Pacific NW. I used a Regional rate box A and it was 3 bucks cheaper than the medium size flat rate box. :)

Ah-ha! So if it floats, use RR. If it sinks, use FR.

For those getting into the Regional rate boxes and/or flat rate,if you order them online via USPS ,they drop 'em on your doorstep for free. My local PO looked at me quizzically when I asked if they had any available. It's a small challenge for me to sometimes get the postage printed online but gets easier each time I use one.

Well, b.well, it seems like you know what you’re into.
All - please don’t think I’m complaining about any of this. Just doing the math.
I do love it.
As bmwrd0 points out, it’s an amusement - not my bread-and-butter. And like r_olson_06, as I’ve found a focus (Bonney), I’ve been more purposeful in my purchases (mostly).
Wow, ssdave, that IS a lot of volume, because I think your prices are reasonable.

Please don’t be too purposeful [emoji41][emoji23] that craftsman box I bought is one I have been looking for! I am extremely grateful to get it.

Just a quick note on shipping via USPS. Everyone should get some of the REGIONAL RATE BOXES from the USPS. They're free and shipped to your door. They're equivalent in size to the medium and large size boxes. They ship based on weight and destination, but can really save a bunch on the shipping cost.

Regional rate is a bit of a misnomer, because you can ship them to anywhere in the US. Just the cost varies by region. Check them out and save a few bucks.

Thanks for the Tip! I didn't know about Regional Rate! That would have probably saved my daughter quite a bit shipping a gift to at town an hour away! (The just left with a LIGHT FR large...)

Outlaw,

I just learned that the newer tensioners are available in magnesium and some sort of plastic/fiberglass/delrin/whatever; I lifted the attached picture from https://military-tent.com/18teroslhedu.html I think the wooden ones are probably Vietnam-era or older

Thanks GPW! I'd never seen one of those! The magnesium ones could be useful on a planned project!

On the latest "Hot Topic" -I was for five or six years completely paying for my habit, and then some - plus things I bought for family and friends, with "selling off the excess" or selling things I'd bought ultra cheap and resold for the profit a-purpose.

Some examples:

$5 intake sold for 800
$20 Linear amp sold for 600
$50 Stereo sold for >1200

Sales like those go a long way to paying for the habit! But they don't move a lot of excess inventory...

That was well before, during, and shortly after the last big recession.

Things have slowed down. I think the better the economy, the harder it is to find the "Super" deals. even the "decent deals" where you make 5X or more are harder to get, AND sell. Selling is harder for some reason, partly due to I wrote off Eprey when they started forcing sellers to accept PP, and partly because Craig's list is harder to sell on.

Overall I find far less worth getting than back then, even for my personal use. People needed the $$ more or were moving out of the area more. (Others moved right back in and then some, but post-moving sales are never what a pre-moving sale is...)

At least that's my more recent experience. I still sell on CL occasionally, but not since C-19, (I'm waiting for that to slow down/become under control)

I keep telling myself I need to play with some other selling venue, but I've just been too busy, and I don't need the $$ bad enough. I COULD use some space back however!

My 2c, but I think it dovetails in with what LS said so eloquently, and what others added to so well.

It’s been a longgggg time since I’ve been on the forum. I think 4-5 years now? I’ve had many amazing scores since then, and maybe I’ll make a thread of them sometime, but I figured y’all would really appreciate this one.

I came across 30+ Stanley Vidmar tool cabinets and will be picking them up at the end of the week. All of them have between 7-14 drawers. Most being 9-11 drawers. All like new. These possibly will be for sale if you want to check out the classifieds section later.

We recently made the trek from Arkansas to Lake Powell in Arizona, and in typical fashion, I ran across some deals along the way. One of them being these vidmars.
We pulled our boat all the way to lake Powell (amazing experience) so all I had was my truck bed to haul anything back. So one Vidmar made it back, the others are on their way back currently.

If anyone ever wanted a Vidmar or two or three or four at a reasonable price...here’s your chance.

We ran to town to do errands this afternoon. I dropped some packages at the post office then dropped my wife at the supermarket to shop. I figured I had about 15 minutes to kill so I checked the closest thrift shop and went through some bins of sockets. I came home with these and got back to the market in the nick of time. I especially liked the Chrome X Quality 17/32” socket and the 5/8” Indestro made Wizard. The DBE wrench is an unmarked Barcalo (of course).

So last weekend I stumbled across a vintage Craftsman workbench. I don't have room for it but the price was right so it's sitting in my Dad's garage awaiting it's final destination here.

It has some sort of particle board top over a wood frame - sort of like a door but it's in pretty good shape. The Homecraft "drill holder" on the left side is pretty cool.

Of course like anywhere in the world - a horizontal surface collects stuff. In this case it was my Dad's Father's Day gift - a Ryobi 40V string trimmer. I told him he could have the workbench if he wanted it but he's in downsizing mode and doesn't want it.

Cheers

Jim

Hell, you deserve that just for finding that many that match and in like new shape.

Really like the sprayer on it. This will come in handy for washing all the grungy stuff I get.

Nice! Good job!

Those commercial sink setups are not cheap. Your sink looks like the heavier S.S. too!

I have been "looking" for years for one for the laundry room.

I paid $200. Has a handful of dings in it, but it’ll have more by the time I’m done with it. The drain assembly’s are next to new. I’m happy with it, it’s a fair price and I’ve been watching.

Great price.

I might suggest that you install a drain trap that allows for access to any small parts that might go down the drain. Maybe not right at the drain/P-trap, but further down stream where it can settle out?

There are lots of nice drain mesh strainers too. The long tube/cone type look useful.

Again, great buy!

Jim, very nice find on the work bench! Those are not common at all. Are you keeping it or selling it? It would make a lot of collectors very happy if you decided to sell it?

Small purchase from a week ago. Saw an ad on CL, asked about these 2 as the address was right next to the place I was visiting and got the tools.
$2.
It's interesting how small Yamaha looks next to Craftsman DBE (or how large the other one looks)

Outlaw, I have had good luck selling some things on forums such as this. People tend to be a little more aware of what prices are appropriate, understand packaging, and might have specialized shipping needs that they are willing to pay for. In any case, understanding the rules of what is an internet item vs. an in-person item vs. casual pickup item is still important.

Think it’s also a micro brewery in Colorado somewhere.

Oops, Gnarly Barley in Louisiana. So close.

With the amount of micro breweries in colorado that was a good guess.

and around here the "grass" is green, even if it does go up in smoke.

Toward the general purpose of tidying up my basement, I spent three hours this morning stripping used nonmetallic sheathed cable.
14.5lb@$.40/lb=$5.80 with plastic;
9.9lb@$2.15/lb=$21.28 naked...
$5.16/hr. I have earned a lower wage than that, but not in this century. I suppose if I upgrade my equipment from a utility knife and a fence staple to an actual cable stripper, I could improve my lbs/hr efficiency, but I think I’ll just stop hoarding wire. It’s awkward to store.
I am now a connoisseur of solid copper wire. The vintage outer sheathing is hard to split, but the consistency of the insulation makes it easy to strip. The nouveau sheathing comes off easily, but the 2-layer insulation is a *****.
Scrapping used copper tube last week was a LOT more lucrative, although I’m not sure how cost-effective spending an hour cutting out the sweated joints to separate the #1copper from #2copper (@$.15/lb difference) was. Cutting the brass fittings off seemed worthwhile. I’ll have to see if the receipt is still around. And using a bandsaw instead of a disc cutter would have significantly lowered the investment of time.
I mention all this because I see copper at garage sales and flea markets priced all over the map. At one, unopened 50’ coil of 12-2 for $10, at another, bundled cutoffs priced like fine jewelry. The potential (like everything) lies in what you can do with it.

Two new discoveries in my clean-up efforts:
1. The old entry cable that was replaced when we upgraded from 100amp to 200amp service is tinned copper, which looks a lot like aluminum naked (though it weighs 3x). I will have to be vigilant when I go to scrap it, because if the guy doesn’t recognize it, it’ll be cents on the dollar.
2. Part of my grandfather’s iron mitre box broke off! Horreur! I felt bad until I noticed JB Weld...either my father or my (ex)brother-in-law effected this cosmetic repair, and I either did not know or have forgotten. Problem is, I’m not sure my father will remember. And, well, it’s irrelevant, because I bought an identical mitre box at a garage sale four or five years ago, just for the brass nameplate, which is missing on Grandpa’s. New Plan: a careful restoration utilizing (yes, there ARE appropriate situations to use that word) the best-condition parts of each.

LS, I have that same miter box, I bought it decades ago (not saying how many) :ninja: with a freshly sharpened back saw at a flea market. I've cut hundreds of pieces of (mostly) oak and its still sharp as can be! (Flooring, 5" oak flooring I use as base boards, door trim, etc etc, fir both my houses, and many other projects...)

I like it so well I've picked up 2 others over the years... But that first one is always my go to for precision cuts. I mounted on a piece of oak (stained and nice Roman Ogee edges), with a cleat for a WorkMate mounting.

I started in the remodeling business in '61. At that time we had a Stanley and a Millers Falls. The same one you have. I loved that box and later bought one for myself. It is still my go to when I need truly accurate cuts.

Yes. Great tool. When we first bought this house, my father lent it to me for some remodeling. I even built a dedicated stand for it, but then he needed it back, and then my brother-in-law (who is a genuine cabinet-maker) used it...then my dad again. It came home with me again after I bought the second one, so I hadn’t used it.
I confirmed with my dad - he broke it. Maybe he did tell me.

I've been hoping to come across a Stanley No 112 for a few years .

I needed one for a project, a QSWO table top, and the Stanley’s were stupid expensive, so I bought the LN. Since then two #12 family members have followed me home for real cheap. Maybe try the opposite strategy, buy a 12 for reasonable, and that will open the floodgates. It’s worth a try, it has worked for several other tools I couldn’t find thru the usual inexpensive channels.

New Plan: a careful restoration utilizing the best-condition parts of each.

LS-- What your plan lacks in originality it will more than make up for in a better looking and working legacy from your grandfather--remember--parts is parts.

A sale popped up today I hadn't noticed earlier and therefore I was #24 on the list. Just as I finally made it inside, the nice Craftsman stack was leaving with a new owner... The vice I had seen in the photos turned out to be a big CM for $100. Not what I was hoping for. The leather handled hip toolbox was already gone and the Kennedy 520 machinists box was badged for CM. I had to settle for shifting through the tool bins, but it was one of those sales where every screwdriver and wrench has a price tag on it. Oh, well. There were a few bargains to be had and I think I grabbed all three.

Snap-on F-18 9/16 swivel socket: $1.50
Plomb WF-8, 9/32 drive ratchet: $1.50
Imperial Brass #123C Refrigeration ratchet: $4.00

I'm going to have to ask the Snap-on crowd about the G date code. It doesn't look like the "G" for 1945 on the SO date decoder. Too round.

I know the Wright Field tools were made between '42 & '45 but is there a way to narrow that range? Alloy Artifacts shows this ratchet with cover plates having a pinched waist instead of oval. Is that indicative of a particular production year?

The Imperial Brass 123C is interesting in that I have no idea why it is labeled a Refrigeration ratchet and secondly, of all the copies I could find on the internet, absolutely NONE had the male 3/8" drive post that mine came with. I can understand that this little piece might be easily lost, but I have to wonder if maybe the ratchet didn't originally come with it. Any clue?
Last shot shows the 1/2" cold broach box end wrench. Don't know what the small square hole is for.
