A plate is within the possibilities if you can find a lasercutter and have the ability to design a new plate in a CAD program that can output a .dxf or .dwg file.

Sendcut send can do up to 1/2", Alro steel can do up to 1" thickness.

I had one made for my shop at work in similar fashion...a larger dia plate had been adapted and it didn't work at all, was tippy, fell on the floor, etc.

Along those lines a laser-cut ship's wheel is entirely possible if a person is willing to blend all of the sharp corners on the handles and able to machine the center hole on a lathe.

You can find the anvils on eBay, I bought a small one for my Dake 0. Some are newly made, some are vintage. Some are really big and pricey.

I grabbed a random too big for mine one at a garage sale for $1 hoping to find a bigger press some time.

Didn't see another Acco in the bunch, so here's mine. I had never seen one before, and now I've seen pics of 3 of them in the past couple weeks. I haven't gotten it mounted yet. I was going to put it on the side of my hydraulic press, but it's so heavy that with only a little load, it will want to tip the hydraulic press over, so I will have to build a leg or an outrigger for it.

I also have a couple of Greenerds but those are far more common, so no pics taken. In fact this pic isn't even mine; it was from the ad when I bought it!

I'm a big fan of old Atlas machines and other items. I have 3 of their presses.

I have a 1 1/2 Atlas as well that I have just finished restoring. If you would like to see the restoration, including casting a new handle you can see it on YouTube at Scrounga’s Workshop.

You can still get parts from Greenard. Their number is in this link https://www.greenerd.com/services/service-parts.aspx

Yes, I live about 20 mi. from their factory. I bought another press, with a broken casting for $100, and its moving parts are all good. I did look at the Greenerd site, and talked to some folks who had inquired into spare parts. They are unbelievably pricy. And rightfully so. These machines last forever.

I continue to pursue the daisy wheel that is for sale a couple hours from me. I really don’t want to drive four hours, if only he would use the mail. *sigh* I imagine, I will be driving there next week...

Is there a UPS store, mailing stop, Kinkos etc where he lives? convince him to take it there, and pay Them the couple of bucks extra to box it And mail to you? Of course you’d need to work it all out in advance with them, but beats 4 hours of driving.

This is a Famco 3R that I picked up a long time ago. I think I've used it once. It's more in the way than useful today. I'll let it go reasonable if someone is interest. Buck and a half.

Keep it soaked in penetrating oil, squirt it once or twice a day and it will probably come loose in a few days

are there any catalog pages showing the tooling that was sold with the presses ?

if you look at the blacksmith sites there is all kinds of tooling to form "Hot metal"

I am more interested in forming sheet metal stuff probably with a Fly press ,

But just looking for tooling ideas.....

thanks for the info

Here’s my Dake 1 3/4 I just finished putting back together recently. I also found a way to mount it so it can actually be used.

I recently picked up a Famco 3-1/2R ratcheting arbor press with a 24" Captian's wheel for about a penny per pound. It was missing the daisy wheel, so I ended up going down to Grizzly and ordered from their parts department the one for their 5 ton press. $30 and done. While the casting looks like **** it will be easy to clean up on my mill.

One of the really nice things about the Famco is that it has a replaceable head on the ram. So its easy to make custom fixtures for it.

I needed a way to punch out my ski boots, so I milled out a piece of billet aluminum and then made a custom bushing to fit the ram to hold the opposing parts of the press.

Grant: First off nice find, that is a really clean press Is it all original paint? And a very nice custom fixture for the ski boots.

I have a Famco 3 1/2C that has a broken daisy wheel and am very interested in how you got yours from Grizzly for $30. Is that something that I can order online from Grizzly?

Thanks! Not sure if it’s all original paint or not, but no obvious signs of being repainted, so if it was the previous owner did a good job.
It’s number 4 on this parts list. Just give them a call.

Recently picked up this Jones and Shipman twin column
View media item 10809120" between the columns, 16" max under the ram, though I think If I remove the ram extension and replace it with a shorter one I can gain a few inches at the expense of not being able to reach the daisy wheel.

Question for folks on nomenclature: what are the correct names for the fixtures people mount on the end of the ram? I see lots of press names for the Etsy / leather working crowd, but I am looking for ways to mount a pin on the end of my vintage Dake one ton press for driving pins out of broken tools, etc. I have a jacobs chuck that I’ve attached with a magnet, and used a dull drill for the pin, unspiraled end down. (as seen online). Broke the magnet today trying to press a breaker bar pivot out.

As mine is a very short throat, I would prefer to use something shorter than a regular Starrett punch held in a drill chuck. I am looking for the correct names so I can see what other people are doing, here and elsewhere. I don’t have the tools to carefully drill a hole in the end of my ram, so looking for clever ways to attach things, and strong pins to drive things out.

Thanks for any ideas of phrases to search for.

This qualifies, right? Thinking of making some other fittings for it so it's not a unitasker.

I would say it counts. If your going to cap bottle you might as well have a nice looking press. Do you brew your own beer?

Yup, this batch is a red ale. My plastic butterfly capper finally failed so it was time to get a proper replacement. There is a nice ball detent on the pinion that lets you disengage it to reposition the handle for the bottle height.

You just need a drill press. Or a lathe with a 4 jaw. Got friends who are handy?

Just picked up a famco 3R, stripped, cleaned up and primed, luckily it was in decent shape, missing the anvil. Just trying to figure out what color to paint it, might go black to match the anvil.

The problem most likely is that you are transferring load through the magnet. You need to recess the magnets. While I do own arbor presses with axial and radial holes in the ram, it is nice to leave them solid. What press do you have? I'd suggest a cup/cap that fits around the ram with tooling attached to it.

As far as punches, use dowel pins, drill blanks or the like instead of actual punches. Or you can cut punches down. They don't need to be square on the back end as the jaws will make them line up.

My press is a little Dake Engine Co 001, 1 ton capacity. I think 5” vertical, a 4” anvil doesn’t fit inside on the pin.

I do have a cup for the magnet, which has a rim, need to check if it will clear the magnet or still touch.

Will need to look for more random metal from my friends stash, then off to the hardware store for the materials you suggested

I’ve seen a few cups that fit around the ram, will see if I can figure a way to cut the 1” square hole blind hole in the piece.

Thanks

I bagged two Dakes a few weeks ago. A Model 0 and a Model 1. Both missing their plates but otherwise in perfect working order. $200 for the pair. Here's the Model 1. The other's already taken to bits and is half way to being repainted.

Other than stop rings for the handle, the 0 is (finally) done and ready to go to a new home (keeping the 1 after a similar refurbishment). Shimmed it 'just so' and it works perfectly. Fun and rewarding project.
